The games true pros are when the game hits 1080p and 60FPS and some of the gunplay is fun. But the poor marketing, crap story, Req system and inaccessibility for new players in multiplayer, Halo 5 Guardians fails to be the system seller Microsoft wanted it to be.

343i knows what they are doing with this saga, after the end of Halo 3 it was a bad end, to continue the history, but the certain thing is that they make a good history introducing a new plot arch and making Jhon117 more human and less soldier.

They introduce new game mechanics and the verticality of Titanfall for the campaing, making it more fun, sadly the IA suffers and isn't as good

Another positive point of this game is that 343i bet for free maps and new modes, implanting micropayment for decorative skins, and using the income they got for this micropayments for the esports and make new maps.

Campaign first. Despite being advertised as “Hunt the Truth”, where Locke is hunting down a rogue Master Chief, none of that happened. This game even used an intense podcast to show the corruption in ONI and there were so many possibilities for this game to go. So much potential. What makes me furious is how it failed to do that. Halo is remembered as having great campaigns and competitive while friendly multiplayer. 343i, after taking over from Bungie, has turned that to ****

The campaign’s story struggled despite being hyped so much. In my opinion, the campaign was one of the largest disappointments I've seen. However, despite its story, the campaign is enjoyable to play. The missions are created nicely and the level design is phenomenal, probably one of the best I've seen in Halo. I have always been a fan of fighting in teams so playing with an entire firefight squad was awesome and greatly appreciated. However, this campaign focused way too much on Spartan Locke and Fireteam Osiris. In my humble opinion: NO ONE CARES ABOUT THESE SCRUBS. From Halo: CE we’ve been playing as Master Chief and he is who we want to play as (and the Arbiter too. Too bad we couldn’t play as him). There were lots of ways this campaign could’ve went. It didn’t go completely south, but it sure got close to it.

Now the bread and butter of Halo 5. The multiplayer. In my opinion, this is one of the best Halo multiplayers. Period. Getting rid of armor abilities was the smartest decision 343i has probably made. Adding in Spartan Abilities: Ground Pound, Spartan Dash, and Spartan Charge were an interesting decision. The first use of aim-down sights in Halo was also a VERY revolutionary thing to be doing in Halo. These quick add-ons done by 343i quickened the pace of the game and makes everything even more hectic than before. Though Halo feels completely different, the multiplayer is a wonder. Split into Warzone and Arena, players can choose what gametypes fit them. As each month comes by, 343i creates even more gametypes and maps to use. Along with this are new and more types of armor and aesthetic options. Yes! The DLC is FREE! Also, players’ Spartans are more customizable than ever. More different armor types, stances, assassinations, etc. There are also REQs (requisitions) that can be called in during Warzone. These include different variants of weapons so there are now more ways to kill. There’s lot to love about Halo 5 multiplayer. However, the biggest downfall is its lack of split-screen...

Despite what you may think, Halo 5's microtransations are not required to succeed. However, I still wished those microtransactions and REQ points were not a thing.

In the end, there are lots to love but lots to hate. Halo 5 revolutionized the way we view the Halo Franchise. But the question is, is it good or bad? I'm not entirely sure yet. (Split screen would help)

*Sorry if I was trying to represent everyone by saying "we". These are my opinions and you may think differently.

On to the review, every game is supposed to make a good first impression and this game doesn't. The advertising for this game made it seem like it was a very story driven game, but that is not the case. For a person who has never played a Halo game before, this story can be very confusing. The campaign is very short if you play on easy or normal. Legendary difficulty is pretty fun if you play with a couple of friends, but it can get boring if no progress is made. The biggest complaint I have with the campaign is the way the AI is, it seems too artificial compared to other games. The campaign for me is a 5/10.

The multiplayer is a lot better than the campaign. Warzone is fun with friends. Custom games is a blast. Arena is ok. But the req packs are a scam, it's just another company trying to steal money from you. The multiplayer mechanics are good, and are made for a competitive play style. But the mechanics get boring after a while .

Overall, this game isn't terrible but isn't good too. The campaign is what ruined the game for me.

Unlike most people I actually enjoyed the campaign and the different approach 343 took. It was the multiplayer that was completely off its mark. Warzone was hyped to be this enormous success with its massive maps and large player count but instead you get lost in the distant spawn points, and the misuse of the Req Pack System. The regular slayer and other game modes are okay but just okay. All the guns were changed for the worse. Every player is forced to use the same guns unless others are found on the map and even then you find yourself sticking with the pistol because most other guns seem overwhelmingly frustrating to get more than one kill with. The multiplayer overall for me was a 4.5/10 Campaign somewhere around 7.5/10. Worth buying if it drops to under $45. Expand

El juego tiene sus pro y contras. Tiene muy buen sistema de combate, sonido y graficos, pero deja delado la historia. La cual pudo haberse hecho mucho mas larga. La campaña no dura casi nada. It rewards people who have a lot of patience, or people who have a lot of money. A good game rewards a skilled player for his hard work and dedication. This game makes you grind and rewards you with random junk you don't even want. Halo Reach did it much better in the past and they did it for free. Some like to justify this garbage system by stating that "it's okay because the DLC is free". That's great, but the "extra content" they're adding for "free", are things that should've been in the game at launch. The game launched without forge, a mode that has been available since halo 3, game modes like,Big team battle, infection, griffball, ect.. Plus half of the 10 actual non forge maps that the game launched with, were just cosmetic variants of the other 5 maps. Same with the DLC maps they so graciously give us for free. Most of them are just maps that are already in the game with a new coat of paint on them. The game also has no split screen or LAN support available, and never will...HALO! With no split screen or LAN.. In the end the game was launched in an unfinished, unacceptable state, and it's a shame that the franchise is being treated so poorly. Expand

Don't be mislead by the 7/10, to me a 7 is a good game with some flaws and that fits Halo 5s category with flying colors. Halo 5 has a strong gameplay mechanic that kept me interested as it was a fresh breathe from previous Halo's, usually I would complain about something like that but Halo 5 seemed to bring back what I loved about the older ones and still advance in new combat ideas. What Halo 5 does not bring to the table, is a satisfying campaign, with its misleading advertising which did hype me up for a huge battle that lasted around 2 minutes of a cutscene, brilliant work 343. The start, middle and end was sloppy, where is masterchief throughout the game? is that how halo works now? asking where the "protagonist" is, really? In a game like Halo 5 it is clear that multiplayer is the money shot now, screw the campaign is basically the feel I got off of this and that is dreadful because halo has always had a strong narrative to accompany a game with so many unique elements, Halo 1,2,3 and Reach are easily my most beloved games due to the campaign being excellent but also because they could balance concentration on the campaign as well as executing a top notch multiplayer. 343 industries hasn't caught on to that yet. Now Halo 5's multiplayer, is it good? yes, it is a fairly balanced multiplayer with qualifers to see ones skill and a gamemode called 'warzone' which is basically what it is called. I don't have a HUGE problem with REQ packs, i don't buy them because i don't need them to have a good time. 7/10 good; has strong potential for further improvements like say i don't know a campaign worth playing. A solid FPS, great multiplayer. Your money is up to your playstyle, want a fun campaign? buy the MasterChief Collection. If you enjoy competitive multiplayer, sink your money in because it is worth that alone, it single handedly pulls it away from an average rating Expand

Brian Reed has completely butchered the Halo story and needs to be replaced ASAP if 343 has any common sense. The story can still be patched if given to someone like Joseph Statin or Eric Nylund who actually knows how the Halo universe works. As for the MP it is tons of fun but sadly the graphics were a huge step down. Halo 5s graphics are comparable to Halo 2 classic and even Combat evolves dare I say it. I think this may have been due to the first time trying to get the game to play at a higher frame rate. The movement in the game feels better than Halo 4 and much less mechanical however I am not a fan of the spartan charge ability. It's annoying to come up against and it's annoying to use. Are you going for the assassination but need to sprint to catch up? No assassination spartan charge. It's also far too easy to charge someone knock them back and head shot even if they were shooting as you charged. I don't mind the other abilities, the slam is hard to land as its easily dodged with the thruster back and takes quite a while to charge up during which time you can easily be shot down.
The multiplayer is a bit of a let down for me the lack of social playlists is a let down as I don't want to constantly play ranked games to enjoy some of the classic game types like slayer and swat. There's at most three social playlists at a time (big team, griffball and whatever the special playlist is at the time). I'd prefer if they brought back team social, social slayer and maybe make some of the new game modes available in unranked playlists. The ranking system also needs something similar to Halo 3's where at most the people in the lobby will be 10 above or below your skill rating as having your rank go down because you got matched with silvers against platinum and diamond players.
Warzone and the requisition system are my biggest problems with this game. There should be arena specific requisition packs and warzone specific req packs that you can buy with credits not spend your money on. I have little to no interest in constantly getting weapon certifications when I'm looking to get armor. I also can't stand the fact that warzone matches are decided almost entirely by how good your teams late game requisitions are in comparison to the enemy teams. I also hate that you're only informed of a base being captured if you're close enough on the map it's a ridiculous feature that serves no purpose other than for you to go "What when did they get a second base?". I also hate that the legendary bosses can be stolen by the enemy from half the map away with a battle rifle or chaingun or anything that has some range and fires more than one shot rapidly. I'm not sure how they could fix this problem, maybe a zone around the boss that you can damage them from similar to games like smite and league of legends.
Overall the game isn't bad it's just average. Occasionally you'll have good moments in the multiplayer that'll make you feel like the game is good and you'll have an equal amount of moments where you'll think the game is terrible. The multiplayer is much more enjoyable with friends as when you play with random players you'll quickly learn there's no limit to peoples stupidity. The campaign does very little for the game I played through it alone and with friends and with friends is better but it's still a very average campaign with a slightly lacking story line.

I thought the halo fun was only a memory but halo 5 looked promising as they wanted to make it feel like the older games and make some serious additions to multiplayer so I jumped back in for this halo. now first things first story mode. ok listen its not that halo 5 story mode is bad because its not its a solid shooter campaign with fun fast paced action. well its a little to fast as the game is only about 4 to 5 hours on average wtf! and also the games marketing crew wanted us to think that there was some fight against an old crazy master chief it sounded badass but there is nothing like that in the game instead without any reason they say chief is nuts and you playing as locke your mission is to capture chief and bring him back to a generic tron space looking building. the story is lame and it makes no sense at all. but playing the game co-op style with a friend should be more fun and the game is intended to be like that because Microsoft wants more money so they took out split screen multiplayer so that people have to buy multiple copys of the game along with multiple xbox one units this business decision is dirty and its strait wallet rape nobody should have to pay 1000$ to play halo 5 with there **** friends halo is a community expirence its always been about having a beer or smoking a bowl and playing halo with your best friends this is criminal and takes away any way for sentimental value with halo 5 like we had with halo 1 2 3 reach and even 4! so any ways single player has mixed reviews some people like some people don't so what about multiplayer. well multiplayer is a completely different story listen up people this just might be the best halo multiplayer ever its split up into 2 main modes arena and warzone now arena is all of the base modes halo is known for gamemodes like slayer, team snipers, big team battle, swat, capture the flag, assault and grifball all of witch play well and are super fun and it all comes with a great leveling system for every player I mostly play arena but if you want something really new and interesting warzone is the way to go its like a cross between strongholds and big team battle only it can go up to 30 players and you can spawn weapons vehicles and more you will have to work with your team to take over each massive map. now what I really like about halo 5 is the style of gameplay there are so many ways to get kills its gonna make your head spin you can Spartan charge into an enemy causing them to black out and die you can use one of the many guns including new ones like the plasma caster witch launches plasma grenades or the new overpowerd magnum or you can use ground slamming or you can throw a grenade in a mosh pit of people fighting and get a cluster luck kill were a bunch of people die at once from your 1 grenade these things are so satisfying and it makes halo fresh again making it a far superior shooter to most of the games on the market. another thing they did was bring forge back and its better then ever people have literally recreated classic maps like last resort and they look good you can build change and warp anything you want however you want I love the freedom this game offers! in conclusion halo 5 is dope the single player is sometimes good sometimes bad but its still cool for 1 playthrough just make sure you have xbox live gold so that you can play the multiplayer thos game will never hold up to the first 3 games but its the best halo sense halo 3 and that makes me happy I cant wait to see what they bring for halo 5 in the next few years until halo 6 comes out the final score is a very heavy 8 out of 10 its not perfect but its really fun and in the end that's why we play video games if you have an xbox one pick this one up. This game is actually a good action game but a very bad Halo game. The single player campaign has a very weak story, it have an awful pace and the enemies and final levels are very repetitive and even boring.

The score would be greater it the game have another name and if the master chief model was changed by any other

Stunning multiplayer. It runs silky smooth. Huge improvement over Halo 4 in that regard. Campaign mode feels like one step backwards though. The new villain was probably the most disappointing part of the story. It was just too lame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR: Alright campaign but misleading, Fun multiplayer but lacks social playlists, Good forge mode but lacks a browsing system.

The game is honestly an alright game by itself but the campaign was quite misleading, the commercials all talked about "Hunting for the truth" when in all actuality the truth is known almost immediately from the start. Chief pretty much tells them where he is going, they hyped it up as if the Chief was going to go rogue and that it was going to be us figuring out the truth as to his reasons, or something like that. It is explained pretty thoroughly where he is going and what he is doing. It felt kinda cheap to get hyped about something that honestly didn't play much of a role in the story line at all.

I like that they tried to do what halo 2 did and introduce a secondary character to play as. I will admit that I can see why they're trying to at least tone down the Chief, as he has received criticism for being a bland emotionless character but that being said, the game pretty much revolves around him, shorting his play time down to 3 missions is a pretty bad way of introducing a second major character. To make matters worse the character they tried to replace him with is a bland emotionless character too! Humourless, emotionless, Locke was not a good choice at all. I would have preferred to play as Buck because at least he doesn't take himself so seriously.

The campaign didn't even bother to introduce anything new, other than terrible squad based combat, which usually involved you going down and your squad attempting to go after you at the last second, or your squad going down and leaving you to fight by yourself anyway. The new character had little to no story and the enemies with the exception of maybe one or two, were the same as Halo 4's. I was hoping to see flood, or maybe something new, but instead the story revolves around this awkward love story between a man and his expired A.I.

As for the multiplayer, well it's fast paced and exciting but tough to really love, seeing as there are a total of two social playlists, Big Team and a weekly rotation. I would like a living dead playlist again please, or more objective type playlists. Playlists like Griffball and such are no where to be found on the multiplayer, giving you the choice of trying to get a objective game on Big Team and most likely getting stuck with Slayer and on the same two maps over and over again, or trying out the weekly playlist til you grow bored of playing the same objective game type.

With over 20 multiplayer matches, I have yet to even manage to find a game of Assault, Oddball, King of the Hill, or Infection. I am a bit disappointed by the lack of playlists. The maps seem fairly decent and are nice, I must admit.

The forge mode is the most in-depth type of creation I have seen in a halo game. There is great potential for the forge mode but a lack of a file browser makes it difficult to appreciate.

The texture work and character models are only a small step above what part 4 produced, but the improvements do help to show that that the 3 year old Xbox One still has many tricks up its sleeve from a power perspective. Story length is shockingly short and made me feel cheated, 343 where is the rest of my campaign!
I knew that 343 was trying to imitate Bungie but changing Halo story line into the length of Destiny's was not the way to do it!

The multiplayer warzone was interesting at first but feels gimped by the introduction of micro transaction rec packs.
If 343 didn't institute the rec pacs and actually let players have fun in the arena then there would have been more reason to come back to the multiplayer but with games like the Division / COD and so on being released and new IP games coming down the pipeline, Halo 5 will go the same way as Halo 4's multiplayer and be totally forgotten by the majority of the player base.

Most e-sports will over look Halo due to how forgettable it really is which is such a shame as Halo 2/3/reach/odst were all games that held the player base for months and months but that was down to interesting game modes like firefight and regular map packs.

There is a lot of love for Halo but for the first time that I will be moving Halo from my "must buy pre order" to a "purchase cheap off e-bay / bargain bin purchase" for any future installments.

I have 4 days of play time across arena and warzone. This game is fun but its rough around the edges. The number of gamemodes, particularly social playlists are lacking, still no oddball!

This game will most likely improve as time goes on, but it's a just above average Halo, nowhere near the level of Halo 2, 3 or Reach in my opinion. Hopefully 343 buckles down and continues to provide updates for this game because as it stands, it is a 60 dollar experience, but the req packs will leave you needing to spend a lot more if you aren't intending on playing tons to unlock them normally. However, it's a catch 22 because if you're playing a lot, particularly warzone, you will want more req packs.

The req pack system isn't awful, but it's clearly designed in a way to get you to spend a **** load of money to get the stuff you want, and as somebody who has been playing halo since the first one, it is an unwelcome change.

Final Thoughts: If you own an xbox one, grab it it is a solid game. If you bought an xbox one for it like I did, reconsider unless you know you have multiple friends who plan to do the same. Teammates will make or break your experience.

343 totally missed the boat on this game. A compelling and intriguing story has always been a cornerstone for Halo games but, this is severely lacking in said department. Add unimpressive textures to the mix, poor resolution and the lack of split screen (why?!) and here you have the, possibly, the worst halo in the franchise.

This was a Spartan Locke game with a glorified cameo by the Master Chief, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing this felt more like a pumped up ODST than a Halo Reach. The story was sparse, lacked the emotional impact of Halo 4 and felt like a middle-act of a film.

As for multiplayer online - I'm not a fan. If "run and gun" is your thing then Titanfall is infinitely more fun, to say nothing about more evolved multiplayer FPS's like COD and Battlefield.

In conclusion - looks good, runs slick and I'm glad to have played it but it's the first in the franchise since ODST that I won't be replaying. More "hollow" than "Halo"

Requisitions. This is basically gambling for items in game. I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't been docked for placing deceiving content in game in order to unlock all the suits you would need to place $1160.60 (at infinite odds or play the game 600-1000 hrs and hope that the draws are perfect.)

    First of, the campaign:
It makes the good girl cortana into a bad girl cortana. It makes the Chief a little bit more human a task 343 has been doing in their games.
Both Spartan teams have their moments, didn't really care that much for Osiris Team, Locke is mediocre at best, the 2 girl spartans are OK, Buck is awesome always crack me up.
Blue Team is BA! Loved that fight scene between Locke and the Chief.
Loved the fact that they modified Halo and made it a little bit different, but they still maintained that halo essence. You can now aim with all your guns!!!!

    Lastly, the Multiplayer:
I've been a halo player since halo 2, hell it's the reason i didn't buy a ps4. But I also complained and always dreamed of that day when they would make halo mp a little bit more faster, more customizable, and more challenging. And well, they took a step in the right direction. It's faster and the ranking system keeps the mp interesting, you try and have a greater ranking every time. package system ala Battlefield or CS:GO which works fine, you can either pay to win or play to win. Customizable spartans, and weapon skins, with more armor and skins with every update. They even included different versions of the same weapon, stronger and faster plasma cannon or a faster shooting shotgun.
While it's not perfect, it's a very good game that shows that 343 are making the right choices and listening to their fans. They're taking a Bungie franchise and slowly giving it the 343 touch.

Despite lobbying fanboys trying to resurrect a game that failed on too many levels, the overall experience of Halo wasn't there in Halo 5.

I'll try and be as thorough as I can when reviewing it, and will list 10 points that correlate with the 0 to 10 scoring systems on Metacritic. So here goes! 1 - No split screen. Sure, that doesn't really affect me too much anymore, but think

Sure, that doesn't really affect me too much anymore, but think back to when you were a kid. Going over to a friend's house or having them come over to yours and sitting back and playing some Halo together. Hell, some friends can't afford an Xbox so all the better they get to experience ALONGSIDE of you, which is no longer possible.

Well, guess you can always pack up your TV, Xbox One, controllers, and all necessary cables, head over to a friends, hook it up and play. Yay. -1

2 - The game is beautiful.

Mine you, it's not ground breaking or anything, but it's a definite improvement visually over it's predecessors. Despite graphics not making a game, there's definitely something to be said when reviewing it. +1

    3 - Microtransactions.

While it's not a huge thing in Halo 5, and things purchased with money can be obtained simply by playing as well, there's something to be said for providing an "easy route" for those who have money to burn vs those that don't. Gold Req packs do provide an advantage to players, and being able to purchase them with real money is doing what everyone hates... providing an advantage for cash players. -1

    4 - No map voting.

It doesn't matter whether you like playing Blood Gulch for the 5th time in a row or not, it's never a good idea to remove features. This goes hand-in-hand with the removal of splitscreen. Allowing playing to vote for maps was a way of ensuring that players aren't being stuck in less-than-desirable maps/gamemodes. With the added "You're banned for... (insert ludicrous reason for actually banning someone here)" players are locked into playing maps they do not enjoy, even thought nearly the entire lobby would rather be playing something else. -1

    5 - The Ban Hammer.

Have you ever been playing a game and decided "Well, I'm losing and there is no coming back from this. I'm no longer having fun. I'm going to play a different game mode"? Well, now you can do that and receive an automatic ban lasting for increasing increments of time depending on the frequency of quits. Sure, it's affects everyone when a teammate quits, but locking players into the "play or die" mentality is absolutely moronic. -1

    6 - Vehicles are useless.

This may just be a case of bad map rotation or a severe lack of large maps in the early game, but let's face it. Vehicles are almost useless in the current map rotations on MP. For a game that prides itself on vehicle variety, it certainly says something for not being able to use them effectively. Sure, some players might be more skillful and able to use said vehicles in tight spaces, but that's a small segment of the community. Making vehicles nearly useless for the larger portion of your fanbase is not a good idea... It's as if there was no QA for this title.... -1

7 - Campaign was okay, at best.

I kind of like the direction it was going, but there was no sense of any real urgency during the entire plot. Sure, the guardians are waking up and things are going to hell, but it's best if we just look for the Master Chief who, we all know, is off doing what he does best. Saving mankind. But let's waste time trying to stop him even though we all know that even if we could, we'd be dooming mankind. Genius writing. BTW, that was sarcasm. -1

    8 - The menus.

Face it, there's so many redundancies and useless submenus that it can be a little confusing. For the first 20 minutes of online after the campaign, I spent nearly all of it going through each individual menu to figure out where everything was essentially hidden. Simplify it, seriously. -1

    9 - Characters are bad.

The characters for this title just ooze political correctness. While anyone can appreciate having a diverse team of protagonist, that doesn't mean they prefer it over character fluidity. They all feel forced and there is near zero chemistry between any of them. I'd rather an all white, all black, all male, or all female team as opposed to what they offered. It's a game, leave the political agenda at the door. Not to mention some of the commentary from the female spartans mid game.... No one cares nor was it called for to comment on the gender equality of Sangheilis. Again, leave the PC drivel at the door. -1

    10 - Free map packs!

I can't stress how important this is. It speaks for itself and one can only hope they continue this trend. +1

There you have it. A comprehensive breakdown of Halo 5.

Multi player is where Halo shines (with the exception of 4) the PVE/PVP warzone mode is very nice addition to the pantheon of Halo multiplayer and offers a nice change of pace to the competitive style of play you will find in Arena, the addition of dedicated servers has done wonders in mitigating latency, (not cured it) but easily the smoothest online experience on current gen consoles to date, and the effort 343 have gone through to create a balanced competitive online Arena should be applauded.

The inclusion of micro transactions was somewhat controversial but so far has not been an overly negative experience and the dual system with req points mitigates this real money intrusion somewhat.

Overall if you are buying Halo 5 for an offline or local multiplayer experience you may left feeling disappointed with series staples such as split screen being missing, however if like the majority you are looking for a finely balanced Arena shooter then look no further Halo 5 represents a return to form for the franchises multiplayer after a lacklustre outing in the fourth installment.

Halo has always been a series packed with gripping narrative, powerful interactions with characters and a whole lot of gunplay. While 343 Industries’ Halo 5: Guardians is no different, the characters we’ve come to know and love have changed. Sadly, that may not be a good thing.

This entry in the acclaimed series puts us back into the boots of the Master Chief, Spartan John-117, and he’s hot on the trail of his AI companion Cortana after the end of Halo 4. (Spoilers, obviously.) Long story short? She’s gone crazy and he still loves her.

Master Chief has always been sort of a silent hero with a tattered past, possibly the last of his kind. But in this game, he’s got Blue Team behind him. Followers of the Halo lore will recognize this Spartan squadron from The Fall of Reach novel.

While it’s wonderful fan service to bring characters like this back, the game lacks any sort of emotional attachment for new players. Where did these guys come from? They seem to only exist so the game can have four-player online cooperative game play.

While Halo: Reach didn’t stun by any means, players were able to feel for each of their squadmates. In Halo 5, you’ll barely remember that they’re there.

On the other side of the galaxy, players take charge as Agent Jameson Locke, a level-headed Spartan soldier tasked with bringing Master Chief home after his squad goes rogue looking for Cortana.
Locke’s team is mostly faceless, but their ambiguity is carried by stellar performances from Ike Amadi as Locke and Nathan Fillion as Buck (from Halo 3: ODST).

But at the end of the day, this is still Halo. The game is fresh, polished and a blast to play.
It’s a healthy evolution of the Halo formula, with things like sprint and armor abilities carrying over from more recent entries. One new feature is iron sights for most of the weapons, which seems odd at first but turns out to be a welcome addition.

Without giving anything away, the story ends up clocking in at just over 5 1/2 hours. While the game ends with a cliffhanger, players will have plenty to check out in the game’s multiplayer suite.

Sure, this is the first Halo game to not support couch co-op, but the competitive online multiplayer mode is still ever-present.

Halo 5: Guardians is a necessary step forward, but after the next game it might be time to retire John and crew and open up the universe to new opportunities for adventure.

Lets make the aiming wonky because real pros will learn how to use the wonky aiming, lets make the pistol as powerful as a dmr so i kill people in 4 shots with a start weapon, lets reduce the radar by half so i can sprint at you from behind and assassinate you without you realizing i'm there. launching the game with 3 whole maps was also stupid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Being a huge Halo fan since the day's of the original Xbox, it pain's me to only give this game a 7. Let me explain why it has received this score.

    Let's talk about the pros.

First off this game has the best graphics of any other game in the Halo series, it really shows off the next gen technology. This game has a complete lack of glitches, bugs, and frame drops. Also the addition of new weapons, vehicles, and armour sets is another one of the things that make this game fun.

But the one thing that always brings me back to this game is the new Warzone multiplayer game mode. Let me explain Warzone to you in the simplest way possible. Warzone is a MOBA style first-person shooter game mode that may as well be the greatest addition to the whole Halo series. Warzone also has some of the biggest maps in Halo history can hold 24 people in a server.

The new REQ cards are a new addictive feature. REQ cards are bought with REQ points which are earned through playing online games. Each time you open a REQ card you can earn new weapons that can be used in Warzone, new armour, new skins, and much more. That is why it is always fun to see what you earn next.

Now let's talk about the cons.

This game has a thing wrong with it that people though would of been fixed after Halo 4 but sadly the developers didn't take any notice of what people wanted.

One of the worst problems with this game is the lack of split screen, which is pretty much what made the other Halo games fun to begin with. The only way you can play the campaign with a friend is if you have two Xbox One consoles and two televisions together.

Another problem is the lack of game modes. This game has a lower amount of multiplayer game modes compared to the other Halo games, and most of them only compelling of 4 v 4.

The last thing I would like to talk about is the campaign.

Now I have mixed feelings about the campaign. I like the idea of bringing back some of the old characters from the Halo series, but I don't like the idea of having three other AI teammates helping you. Sometimes they can get in your way or get killed trying to revive you. But I like the design of the campaign levels with beautiful environments and tons of weapons, and enemies to kill. But one thing that annoyed me is the lack of Master Chief and the too much attention to Locke. And I feel like the story could have had a bit more effort put into it.

Well that's my review, hope you enjoyed reading.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First, SPOILERS BELOW!!!

I'm sorry: every Halo until this one has been great - I was most nervous about Halo 4, as it was 343's first entry into the series...and they delivered! Well, mostly: the Prometheans were an interesting conceit, the Didact was...imposing although I would have liked more character development or menace, and the Campaign levels were solid. As a sidenote: I only play the Campaign, rarely mutliplayer (I don't have the time (or patience) to spend honing my MP skills...SP has been just GREAT until now.

    Then this mess.

    My issues:
-you're BARELY the Chief in the game: Bungie did the "Arbiter switch out" for Halo 2, but it felt balanced, and it contextually made sense with the story and the 3rd party (Flood) as a threat - Locke seems like a good character, but the "head-to-head" matchup promised by the marketing didn't come to fruition except for a painful-to-watch hand-to-hand CG fight
-The story - just...bad, man. There's some tacked-on "hunt" that made no sense: Chief is ignoring UNSC orders and going after Cortana with just his squad...even though he discovers she's an enemy now and could, you know, contact them...why not go back to Infinity and explain what he saw? He's pretty much a lawbringer after saving the galaxy...? No...this story is confusing as hell, the motivations of the characters are unclear, and it does nothing to build on the Haloverse
-The continuity - I had expected something related to the end of Halo 4; the only thread to it is the Prometheans are still enemies and are...helping the AIs to, uh, take over and police the galaxy in order to...er...stop war...? Or, er, defend against the Flood returning...? Or...?
-The marketing - in their first trailer, Chief is covered in some robe walking across the desert, a Guardian rises up and...none of that is in the game or predating the game or, well, anything...I was expecting something to have happened to Earth (remember the end of Halo 4 when the Didact dropped...something on the ground and the soldiers were warily approaching it...? Wha' hoppen?)
-the squad AI...the goddamned squad AI - I'd played the first level and though, "hunh...Republic Commando...?" then read online that the Producer produced RC back in the day and I was looking forward to it: RC was fun and I had hoped for a sequel...your squad had snappy banter, and each had a unique function. Most importantly, they LISTENED TO YOUR COMMANDS. These AI are f***ing RETARDED. They don't stay put, they run into a hail of plasma for no reason, they don't have any variety of capability, and they don't have much command variety. If there's a "worst thing" about this game, it's your squad AI...
-guns felt uniform - action didn't seem varied
-Boss battles were repetitive, ESPECIALLY the 3x Eternal Warden one on The Breaking - he wasn't menacing and seemed to have no purpose in the story except to sound English and have a stupid "Mario 64" bubble exposed on his back as a weak point
-levels were boring - it felt like being channeled from one multiplayer arena to the next - little variation between levels, very few surprises

The only plusses I saw were:
-Cortana as the villain - I was Ok with this: it was a nice plot twist to have her turn on humanity: shades of Dr. Halsey's arrogance mixed with an AI's immortality
-the AI threat revealed at the end - it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out in Halo 6: AIs in the Haloverse control slipspace jumps, complex installations, planetary defenses, almost everything...if they jump ship to become a totalitarian regime, how does the UNSC fight that while crippled by their betrayal?

If they can make a story out of that that makes sense, Halo 6 might be good...after 5, though, for the first time EVER, I'm going to wait for it to drop in price.

Ugh. So disappointed. This is one of my favorite series and this is just a big ole turd in what was supposed to be a promising new era...

Plus the Campain is really dissipointing, it is not what the trailers told us, they lied. But that was not the reason why I enjoyed this game, i enjoyed it because of the multiplayer. Warzone is the best part of the game. It's where you are teamed up with 12 different players, and what you have to do is to capture bases, while going after objectives against the covenant. Warzone assault is where one team defends their outposts, while the other tries to capture it. Arena has team arena, slayer, swat, free-for-all, big team battle, and a new mode called breakout. Breakout is simple, it is where you have to take the flag to your base, or just kill the enemy players. I was dissipointed that it did not have infection, but I got over that. It still has forge, which is still fun. One more thing, the multiplayer has this things called req packs, which is where you earn things as you play the games multiplayer. There are some packs that you have to buy, so be aware of that. For weapons, you can customize your skin, but I think you have to buy the stuff to do that.
I thought the game was fun and this game will keep me on for a long time.

Excellent Game. Fast paced exciting Multiplayer. Every weapon is well balanced, as are most of the maps. Competitive Arena for those who like that, Big Team Battle and Warzone who like larger matches.
Spawning sometimes is a little funky on maps like Deadlock: 1 guy spawns on the opposite side of the map from his team. No overpowered weapons, game is genuinely fun to play.

Campaign plot and execution was a little off. The advertisements promised a Chief vs Locke storyline, but that never happened. You didn't get to play as Chief for many levels, and some levels existed where you didn't get to shoot anything, basically an interactive cutscene.
On the whole, an excellent game.

Halo has been around for such a long time that in order for it to still be a worthwhile shooter, it would have to undergo some big changes and that's just what 343 did. The story is just what one would expect from a Halo game. Overall there were a few things that really stuck out to me when playing Halo 5. The first one is the 343 did a fantastic job in balancing the guns. In past Halos I wouldn't even touch a gun because others were clearly better, but in guardians I pick up every gun because they actually are worth using now. Also some OP guns were nerfed a bit such as the spartan laser. Vehicles were also nerfed a tad making it more easy t combat them in the absence of a power weapon, but they were also made much more interesting in that they have more variation, examples being rocket mongoose and differing warthogs. The sound in this game was unrivaled by any I have played before. Whether it is shooting the BR or picking up grenades or zooming in or out, everything sounded so fantastic. The last thing that stood out to me was aiming in. In order to evolve and compete with the likes of COD, Halo needed to ditch the hip-fire only gameplay that has been its focus in previous games. I was unsure how this would change things but they were able to put it off. Whenever you get shot you are forced to unzoom which makes it fair and exciting. The story was what you would expect fro a halo game, pretty good and a medium length with some collectibles scattered throughout. I did appreciate the noticeable difference in fighting the covenant and the forerunner. The online featured a new and exciting gametype, war zone which was a good addition to the standard game modes we are accustomed to. My major complaint is the REQ system. While the REQs fund the DLC so we get that for free, I don't like the idea of getting random loot and such. While it does well for rewarding people with vehicles and such, I don't like the fact that most of the helmets, armor, and skins (or lack thereof) are up to chance. I liked reach's way of doing things, save up enough credits and buy whatever you want. There are a few things done wrong in this game including poorly designed squad member AI, boring talk to people missions, and a lack of blue team. I gave this game an 8 rather than a 9 due to the fact that I do not know how long this game will be able to keep my interest. I would recommend this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halo 5 Guardians is the most disappointment ive felt for a Halo game. This game fails on many levels like no split screen multiplayer( A key feature in the Halo franchise), the lack of story and a repetitive game play(You fight the warden like 6 times and only 4 missions with Master chief and 3 with questioning levels), game-play similar to COD or other stereotypical shooters nowadays. I remember when Halo used to be different and fun, innovated, not a cheap COD rip off with key feature taken out. After Halo 4, i was so excited for this game, but it failed to deliver. Expand

Chief's Blue Team does not get the proper introduction into the gaming world, and Chief's development takes a step back from Halo 4.

The ending was a great twist, and I definitely feel compelled to buy the next installment, but please 343, take your time and pace the story better.

Yes I should have read the back of the game carefully first but who would've thought. I have read a lot of the complaints and I have to say most of them are right on the nose. Even though I could not play I watched my son because I was interested in the story line. I am so disappointed. I think the thing that upsets me the most though, and many people may not agree with this but, the fact that you cannot sit with a friend or three and play alongside each other crammed onto the couch, laughing, giggling and yelling in a frenzy of excitement and fun or the boys begging "mom" to play because I am a kick ass sniper. As a parent I try to limit the amount of electronic time my son has and when the boys come over they are allowed to play for a bit and then sent outside for some time with nature. But now in order for him to play his most favorite game and one of mine with his friends they have to own and xbox one and halo 5 and be in their own homes. None of them have an Xbox one, they all own PS4. Truthfully I bought the xbox one just for Halo 5. I feel like I have made a huge mistake. I am not sure who makes the decisions when you design these games but I do not agree that completely eliminating split screen play to get a better picture or whatever it was I read was the reason was worth it. Halo 4 was perfectly fine playing split screen. When you have a game series the next game is suppose to be amazing compared to the last. Unfortunately Halo 4 is better in leaps and bounds compared to Halo 5. Get it together Microsoft or I may just have to trade it all in. THERE IS NO SPLITSCREEN CO-OP. In an ill-advised effort to sell more XBOX One consoles, Microsoft has done away with Splitscreen. If you want to play the campaign with a friend, they'll need their own XBOX One with an internet connection.

The Multi-Player: To help pay for future Multi-player content, 343 and their Microsoft overlords have introduced the Requisition System. A baloney way to sell you gambling packs that only occasionally give you the weapons you need. This essentially translates into Pay-To-Win for the new Warzone mode.

Noticing a lot of reviews that just focus on one issue rather than taking the whole game into account, so I'll throw my opinion into the mix:

Overall, Halo 5 is a game that was over hyped. Through the hunt the truth advertisement Halo 5 hinted at being an immersive story line of questioning whether Master Chief should still be trusted even after going AWOL. Instead we got a campaign that is short in terms of story progression with minimum ties to its predecessor, Halo 4, and a multiplayer that is fun at first, but fizzles out after a few matches in Arena and Warzone.

    Campaign:
The story itself has underdeveloped characters in a drawn out game with a disappointing ending. Halo 5 has a perfect opportunity to develop Master Chief's character and introduce conflict to make Master Chief and his crew more interesting, but fails to deliver as we focus on Team Osiris whose actions have little effect on the overall story, until the ending, which results in a cliffhanger for Halo 6
Consequentially, the lack of character development for any of the characters within the fire teams made for a less engaging experience, since none of the character's history and individuality are described except through a few short dialogue sections in the latter section of the game, where it is not necessarily needed.
The story offers plenty of lore and information either through conversations in-game, in cut scenes and through hidden intel in each of the missions. However as a casual Halo Player, none of the information was worth seeking out, since it often offers irrelevant conversations that have no relevance to the plot line. Any interesting plot holes that arose as a result of Halo 4 and Spartan Ops were either anticlimactic in resolution or dismissed entirely through a one-liner given to you. The story presented as a result felt, ironically, underdeveloped to the point where it feels like Halo 5 is just providing a background for Halo 6
The environment did look amazing with no noticeable frame rate issues, and the addition of the team revival was useful, however the campaign was clearly designed for a multiplayer experience, since there are an unnecessarily large amount of enemies for a solo player, and the A.I performance is not as good as it could be, especially in close range scenarios, where all three of the supporting A.I could be taken out with a successful melee swing.
Most of the game play is repetitive and tedious, especially on higher difficulties, making the campaign seem more like a firefight mode with a few in-between sections to save your progress. There are noticable exceptions, such as either a flying segment in one mission, or other missions that allow the use of vehicles to make killing easier, and more segments that switch up the kill enemies on foot should be implemented into further games.
The reward for beating Halo 5 on legendary is not worth the time and effort, and for the most enjoyment should be played on a lower difficulty, unless you have a coordinated group of friends and a weekend to kill.

    Multiplayer:
As far as multiplayer goes, it is fun at first. However, Halo 5 multiplayer does not hold out for the long run. The Arena section offers different types of games to play, but with some playlists having randomized games can make getting commendations difficult, since you end up playing the same type of game over and over again. Also, arena maps often feel cramped, leaving little possibility for long term strategy.
War zone is essentially strongholds on a bigger map. There is minimal PVE interactions, and are either at the beginning of the match, or out of the way of where the current action is taking place.

Overall the campaign feels underdeveloped in terms of story and character design with a multiplayer driven campaign that feels more like firefight, than an innovative campaign. The campaign will overload you with mostly uninteresting lore from intel and cut scenes, and any conflict from Halo 4 was easily dismissed, leading to a Campaign focused on the wrong person, with an uninteresting story.
The multiplayer is fun at first, but there is essentially nothing to work towards, since the Req system is slow and unreliable, and matches feel repetitive and often one sided in the case of Warzone

    Recommedation:
The game is currently not worth the $75 CAN price-tag it currently has. In its current state, it's value is more likely around $30 CAN, and is likely going to go down in value as people leave for other games and eventually leave for Halo 6

There are some beautiful environments (I actually paused the game at one point and had my girlfriend come watch for a few minutes as I arrived on a new planet), and varied weaponry/enemy structure. I didn't feel like the bosses were just bullet sponges; some strategy was required to shoot them in certain places etc.

The multiplayer is good, maybe not the best Halo multiplayer ever. All of the games seem to feel the need to emulate Titanfall with the jetpacks/power suits now, so some will enjoy Halo and CoD more now and some will enjoy them less. I was fine without people boosting all around the map but I'm acclimating to this.
The Warzone mode is what pushes the multiplayer over the top and I actually need to get in there more and continue playing it. (I normally hop in matchmaking Slayer).

Warzone probably pushes the score up a notch, it is probably an 8.5 but I was going to round down to 8 -- I'm going to go with a 9.

It was clear that a lot of work went into this game. The enemies are similar to those of the original 3 games, and the Forerunner enemies are unique and fun to fight. The story is interesting and engaging. You're going to hear a lot of people griping about the story in this game, but chances are, it's because they didn't do their research. It literally takes 10 minutes to learn all the backstory to this game with a few simple web searches.

I suck at multiplayer so I'm not going to be much of a help reviewing that. But from what I can tell, Warzone is basically the original Battlefront: you go around a big map killing enemies and capturing command posts until time runs out or you get enough kills or something. It seems fun if you're willing to put the time into it.

All in all, I can honestly say that this game deserves a 10/10. Other reviewers will be griping about how 343 Industries is ruining the Halo franchise by trying to make the world different from the original trilogy or whatever, but I really think they're doing a fine job. It's like they think that 343 is bad only because it's not Bungie. When people look back at the old games, they only remember the good things about them. Because why remember the bad, right? Well, because then it would be a fair comparison to 343's games, and we can't have a fair comparison. We're too salty about Halo changing development companies. Well, what I have to say to those people is this: Halo 5: Guardians is damn fun. Get over yourselves.

Poor writing from an already establish terrible halo writer, pacing issues throughout the story, lack of character depth and development, cliche plot, and boring characters. The hunt for chief that was advertised was lackluster and poorly executed. Fan favorite blue team might as well not even be in the game since they have no importance to the plot whatsoever and are just kind of there. Osiris who is the new team in town is bland, and boring with the exception of Buck. The campaign is also fairly short, at least compared to past titles. I was able to complete it in 6 hours on heroic while looking for collectibles and taking my time. Game play is fun, and level design is A+, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the campaign's many shortcomings.

Multiplayer is a blast, weapon balancing and gameplay is easily the best. Every weapon feels useful and no one weapon overpowers the others. Gametypes are fun, and warzone is a welcomed edition to the franchise. But so far from launch up until December there is a severe lack of gametypes (missing many core halo gametypes that should never be missing), and it's missing maps. There are 28+ maps, some are re-skinned versions like truth and regret, some are forged, and some are specifically for breakout. Most maps are fairly small as well. Warzone only has 3 maps, 4 since today's update and 2 of which are not very good at all.

Forge (which just came out today), is great. controls are wonky and this upgraded version definitely isn't casual friendly. The forge specific maps are also very tiny compared to previous halos and the file share is a downgrade from Reach's file share/browser. Another disappointing aspect is that all those warzone req weapons/vehicles/variants aren't able to be forged which just doesn't make sense.

Armor customization is worse since Halo 3. only 3 points, helmet, armor, and visor. Plus, you can only unlock armor through RNG/Random through the req system which is a terrible addition to halo. Armor is no longer unlocked by skill, or rank but rather random luck. It's just a terrible idea.

It's worth buying just for the multiplayer. The campaign is ok, but the biggest flaw in his game is not being able to play as Master Chief much. You're Locke for 12 of the 15 missions. They could have at least split it 50/50. Anyway the multiplayer is fantastic (easily the best in the series) and the new warzone game mode is awesome.

Halo 5: Guardians is okay. Its campaign is rubbish, but the multiplayer is solid thanks to the foundation it’s built upon. The latest Halo is a big deal only for hardcore Halo fans. For me the single player campaign was unbearably pompous and despite 1080p and 60 fps the visuals are not as breathtaking as they once were in Halo 4. The game builds a solid foundation for Halo 6, but it’s not one of those games you absolutely have to play. [13/2015, p.48]
