Halo 5 is all in a polarizing experience. One the one hand you have a finely enhanced formula that allows for spectacular feats of gameplay, and on the other hand you have a by-the-numbers single player experience and a multiplayer component that takes a step back for every step forward. While Halo 5 continues where Halo 4 left off and expands on it in a number of ways, the final productHalo 5 is all in a polarizing experience. One the one hand you have a finely enhanced formula that allows for spectacular feats of gameplay, and on the other hand you have a by-the-numbers single player experience and a multiplayer component that takes a step back for every step forward. While Halo 5 continues where Halo 4 left off and expands on it in a number of ways, the final product never escapes a level of being simply passable, failing to transcend itself to greatness.

The single player begins by cruelly cauterizing the open plot threads left by Halo 4's single player and Spartan Ops modes. The state of the Covenant leadership, the situation with Halsey and ONI, Cortana's death, Master Chief's newfound augmentations from the Librarian - all of these elements see an abrupt halt to their existence with one exception that I won't spoil, which has been re-purposed here. It should be noted that the marketing campaign for the single player, hinting towards conspiracy, political intrigue, and confrontation between the game's two pivotal characters Locke and the Master Chief, sees the most minimal development and feels the most shoehorned-in aspect of the single player. The plot is largely forgettable, and squanders the potential the rich Halo universe could have provided here. In place of mystery, intrigue, and the nature of an evolving humankind is a predictable, by the numbers affair filled with one dimensional characters, banal dialogue, and a villain so disappointingly superficial and evil as to evoke the Sith characters from George Lucas' Star Wars prequels. While the game manages to pack in quite a bit of lore from Halo materials far and wide, the result is rather soulless as 343 is in pandering mode almost the whole way through.

It is surprising, then, that the Master Chief and Blue Team see the least development. Rather than assigning compelling personalities to the most decorated and fearsome soldiers humanity has ever seen, Blue Team simply exists to uphold the co-operative mechanics (for providing real friends different bodies) in place, while Locke's team sees the most screen time and dialogue, with just as little personality. Fred in particular exists almost as a ghost - this Spartan, who is in his skill set the most similar to Chief, doesn't have a moment in my memory where I even remember him speaking.

Where the story may not be able to keep your interests, the gameplay will probably suffice. Halo 5 makes some fairly well implemented changes to the formula, which results in a more mobile brand of Halo's kinetic action. Level design in the single player works best in the game's "corridor" sequences, which put players at the top of a sloped, wide corridor filled with platforms and corridors of varying elevations, goodies to pilfer, and collectibles to unlock. The artificial intelligence across the board seems to have been simplified, probably to create for a more freely flowing experience whose pace is dictated by the player themselves. While the addition of collectibles into the missions is a nice touch, the developers could have used some restraint to avoid crippling the pacing of the game more than the mission structure does so already.

Of the fifteen missions in the single player, there are a number of fairly short intermission sequences that allow the player to explore a small environment and get their healthy dose of exposition and worldbuilding. The unfortunate result is a product that is no more effective than the environmental storytelling and ambient worldbuilding found in the preceding Halo titles. I feel that 343 wanted so badly to cement its universe by packing it so densely with lore that it overused this liberty and vacated any sense of mystery or intrigue in its world. While there is some cool lore to chew on from time to time, these sections could have been foregone in favor of a better traditional experience. Instead, the single player never feels like it leaves its first act, simply dumping the player off of a cliff the moment their intrigue is sparked.

The multiplayer component is similarly hit or miss. While the new 12v12 Warzone mode can provide some tense moments and exciting action, the scoring system in the AI infused mode is easily exploitable, and the lack of variety in maps sorely hurts the experience. In regular modes, social playlists are lacking entirely, leaving a roster of small team competitive modes and a currently broken free-for-all mode. The map designs in Arena are fitting of the mode's name, but feature visually bland designs and not many of them. While 343 plans to add free DLC content, the custom map editor forge is missing from launch, and a number of the total maps promised for Halo 5 will be created using said tool. I believe maps generated in forge are no substitute for in-house content - whether the content is free is no excuse.

In the end, Halo 5 plays it safe and expects its fans to wait patiently for things to improve. I feel many won't.

Halo 5 is solid game but is the most disappointing entry in the series. The multiplayer has improved from past games but the multiplayer is the only thing that this game has improved on in any way.

Halo is about its universe and this game has the worst story in the entire series. 343 has put so much focus on the multiplayer they have forgotten what made Halo so great in the first place.

I still feel this game is worth a play but it is recommended you not buy the game just rent it.

Somehow Halo 5 manages to make Halo 4 seem like a masterpiece. Despite this games many flaws it does still have some neat moments but very little makes this game worthy of the Halo franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR Campaign 4/10 | Mutiplayer 7/10 - - Overall 5.5/10

Review (Campaign) The Halo 5 Campaign had a very good start especially when 343i showed Hunt The Truth. The idea of having all of these intertwining problems (Civil War, Promethean Threat, the Return of the Flood, etc.) sped up the hype train very much. It was also cool to see 343i go back to the roots of Halo 2 by having a second main character in the campaign. Unfortunately at release, it all fell apart. The problems with Halo 5's campaign fall under two categories, the gameplay and the story, with the latter being the worse of the two.

In Halo 5 Guardians, you have access to squad commands, this is where the person playing as Locke or Chief can command his AI allies to move to position, to attack a target, pick up a weapon, or to revive a fallen teammate. The problem with this though is that the AI do not respond to threats and only follow the specific orders. For example, if you get downed, you can call an ally to revive you. Most of the time, they won't sprint towards you and they won't avoid hostile fire. They're very slow and very very stupid but this can avoided if you do coop. Humans > AI always.

There are a number of problems however with the story itself. The first is that the Master Chief is not a main character of Halo 5 Guardians. If we consider Locke and Chief as main characters, they should both have an equal amount of game time. Out of the 12 actual gameplay misssions (15 total but 3 are just walk around cutscenes for Osiris), only a 4th of the game has Blue Team involved. I feel like 343i wanted to replace the Master Chief which is very hard to do. Bungie did a very good job at making the Arbiter a main character by giving him good dialogue, good background, and good story revolving around the covenant. Locke on the other hand is a very bland ONI agent that doesn't really get me to have any emotional attachment whatsoever. Campaign is pretty short for a Halo game but it's really the reveal of the villain which sucks the most. A lot of people wanted the flood, mendicant bias, and/or insurrectionists in this Halo and all we get is more prometheans, this time with Cortana as their leader. Most people were tired of the cheesy love story between Chief and Cortana. To top it all off, they end the game in a cliffhanger that doesn't really get the feeling of a good (But annoying) cliffhanger like Halo 2 "Sir, Finish this Fight.". In short, Characters are bland, the story is bland, and the cliffhanger is disappointing. I guess 343i is really related to Bungie (See Destiny).

    Final Score: 4/10

    Review (Multiplayer)

Unlike the abysmall launch of Halo: Master Chief Collection, Halo 5: Guardians had a very solid launch with little to no server issues (EAST US). As a person who bought MCC day one, I felt that 343i didn't do a satisfactory job at fixing the game (With coop not even having a stable frame rate above 10). I was really concerned that the same may happen with Halo 5 but luckily I was wrong. With that being said, the game doesn't really innovate beyond Warzones which is the redeeming factor of the game.

Almost all the spartan abilities (Thruster Packs, Ground Pound) were either already in the game or are just gimmicky and unnecessary. There is no real use for Ground Pound and for Spartan Charge whatsoever and yet people claim that these changes are innovative. It feels as if that 343i couldn't add in anything new to improve the game but tried to balance what features were already in Halo 4 (Thruster Pack [AA] and Sprint). Due to this, grenades are much more powerful and you die much faster than in other Halo which is disappointing. Despite these changes, Warzone is without a doubt the most innovative addition to the Halo franchise and I love it a lot.

Warzone is a 12v12 game mode that pits 1 team vs 1 team vs neutral enemies. This forces players to not only kill the enemy team and secure bases, but to work with others at taking out AI enemies that spawn in. There is a problem with this which whoever gets the last hit takes all the points (Someone can snipe an enemy from a mile away and take all the points) but it is a really cool idea. I loved it the moment I saw the game mode at E3. If 343i can fix some of the balance issues in the game and make more warzone maps (Or even allow us to make them in forge), they've got a really good game ahead of them.

    Final Verdict 7/10

Conclusion: Halo 5 is another divisive game just like Halo 4. There are the fanboys on Metacritic who give the game 9's and 10's blindly buying whatever 343i gives them and the haters who give this game a 0. I don't think either of them should be allowed to review games because Halo 5 needs criticism but not hatred. 343i is improving Halo but I do not believe that this is the game that will turn the franchise around after Halo 4/MCC. Hopefully they'll get it right next time with Halo 6. Good luck Spartans!

Final Verdict 5.5/10 - Better luck next time!

-Vehicles are durable and easy to control, with the exception of the Scorpion tank, which has awkward turning.
-The HUD is very clean and informative, but some of the HUD's sound elements are annoying. Too many bleeps and bloops for dealing and receiving damage.

    Performance:
-You will need to download a 9 GP patch on day one.
-The game runs at a consistent 60 frames per second for the most part. Unfortunately it sacrifices resolution, texture quality and animation to achieve this.
-The textures themselves are pretty bad, texture popping is everywhere and things in the distance are blurry.
    -Load times are surprisingly fast.

    Audio:
-Halo 5's music has no identity. Most songs are either poorly made remixes of older Halo music, or just wander aimlessly until they end.
-Voice acting is poor. This is not the fault of the voice actors, they clearly have talent, but whoever directed them did a poor job to capture my attention.
-Grunt voices are annoyingly high pitched and try too hard to copy the humor of the grunts from the original trilogy. Jackals sound like cartoon birds.
-General sound effects are pretty good.

    Campaign:
-Halo 5's story is a confusing mess. It relies far too heavily on the assumption that the player is familiar with the expanded universe from the novels.
If you haven't read any of the books, you wont have a clue who half the characters are. It just meanders along until it ends abruptly, almost as if a final level was cut.
-The characters in the story are boring and lifeless, they never have anything clever or memorable to say and provide little reason to care about them.
-Level design is mediocre. Most environments consist of hallways that lead into large open hallways with platforms to climb on.
-There is a very good amount of enemy variety. The Forerunner enemies are especially improved since Halo 4, as are their weapons.
-Enemy AI is nothing particularly impressive, yet some mechanics are very welcome. For example, a Hunter will now go berserk when their bond brother dies, becoming much more aggressive and powerful.
-The 3 AI teammates are incredibly stupid and basically worthless.
-You only play as Master Chief for 3 levels out of 15.

    Mutliplayer:
-Most maps are too small and have poor map flow.
-Spawning needs some work, especially for FFA. Too often have I spawned right next to an enemy player, or even in the middle of a gunfight and gotten killed.
-Warzone is very fun. The maps for this gametype are very large and have a variety of paths to choose from to reach the objective.
Fighting NPCs along with enemy players is a refreshing experience and very tense. Teamwork is especially important in this mode, though almost nobody every uses a mic to communicate with their teammates.
-The matchmaking lobby is awful. When you join a lobby, nobody's name is visible, only their emblem. It's impossible to mute players in the lobby as well, so if someone is eating their mic, you have to wait for the game to start to mute them.
-Matchmaking is pretty fast and runs on dedicated servers, so game ruining lag is rare.
-Forge will not be in the game until December.

Overall, Halo 5 is an alright game by itself, but a poor addition to the Halo series.
It lacks the love and care that was put into the original trilogy and suffers from 343 Industries' attempts to make their version of Halo unique to the original Halo.

I'm playing on for 'the Chief''s sake because we go back a long way and I want him to look good to inspire his squad. Locke, well he just feels like just another generic supersoldier and I don't really care how many times the aliens shoot him down and he squeals for his bros to save him.

Halo 5 is what any Halo fan will need this winter. I'll split up my review in 2 parts.

    Single Player

The single player is nice. It plays well from the beginning. The storyline is somehow simple, but keeps you on your feet.
I really liked what they did with both teams and the fact that Osiris is looking for Chief was interesting.
The only sour note, is we don't see as much of masterchief. Locke is taking much space, but I quickly come to like
his character. I would have liked more missions with Masterchief. Also, note that the campaign is short, but legendary mode
is super difficult. So if you're like me and want to enjoy the story without getting too much trouble, play on normal. Give it
a second hardcore pass on legendary to make sure you satisfy your needs afterward. I won't give any spoilers, but the ending
will give alot of avenues to explore on Halo 6.

    Multiplayer

What a surprise. After Halo 4 and MCC, I wasn't looking for something great to be honest. Halo 4 had too many power weapons
and I really didn't appreciate the multiplayer experience in a whole. Anyone who has bought MCC knows that it was broken for
a long time after the release. Halo 5 however is a gem. The gameplay is so smooth. It plays very well. They purified the
weapons (there's some power weapon left, but they take less space then in Halo 4). The navigation will seems complexe at the
beginning, but as soon you play a few time, it will come second nature and really enjoyable. The ranks are giving a competitive¸
side I had never seen before on a Halo game. I must say, being placed in a league after 10 games is better then a simple number
next to your name. Your rank will go up really fast when you win. The maps are beautiful and really fun to play in. But there's
a mode that will take alot of your time once you'll buy the game; Warzone. This mode is just addictive.
You play against NPC and players alike while you must complete objectives on both side. I don't want to take much time explaining
it, but it is really, really, really incredible.

Overall, the game is a success. It does change course from other Halo games, but I don't mind at all. It will be a nice winter,
    with new Halo memories.

Everything to shallow characters, forced developments, the story not making an sense at times...the list goes on. Locke is gun for hire and you really just feel like that the entire story line. And you really don't care for Locke...which is kinda sad because he seems like an interesting guy.

However, despite its many criticisms...the story does one good thing...it actually gets you hyped for halo 6! Its just really bad story telling. It feels too much like Cod which made me upset because the difference between Halo and Cod for me was the lore/story. I used to replay halo campaigns soo many times because I loved its world. Its characters. Sadly..halo 5 guardians will be the first campaign i won't play again. No replay value. Zero and don't even get me started on how short it was. 5 hours it took me to beat on normal. Halo 4 took me 12 hours. False advertising by microsoft's end.

Halo used to suspenseful and mysterious in its story telling. Halo 5 has none of those. Its fast. Quick. Each mission feels like a distraction...to prolong the finale. The last 3 missions were great..really. They felt like old halo games. But the first 12...they felt like spartan ops missions. Just distractions so at the end..they can finally tell you what the freak is going on. Actually I take that back...spartan ops had better story telling. Halo 2 is no longer the worst campaign in the series. Actually...halo 5 makes halo 2 actually seem really good. That's how bad it is. And for those who say halo 5 is another halo 2...where halo 6 will make you like halo 5 are delusional fanboys. Because in all seriousness...halo 5's campaign isn't really needed. The last 3 missions could have been a dlc campaign...that's how pointless the story was.

But one thing I will say...get halo 5 for its multiplayer. Its mechanics feel fresh and natural. its really amazing and great game to play with friends. I really can't praise it enough. I love warzone. Warzone is really a blast and its amazing how fast the momentum of the battlefield can change by just a few boss kills. And have no fear about people loading up on the req packs. Just because I purchase a rocket launcher at a req station...doesn't mean another player, boss, or what not is going to kill me before I get to use it. And if you die before you use it...tough luck. Gotta wait to build up more req points to buy another one.

Team arena and slayer also feel like the old halo games, but spiced up. The new mechanics make it feel fresh. Spartan charging and pounding people are very effective and help a great deal. Assassinations are also back. One thing I do enjoy about slayer and team arena are how the map announces when a power weapon is going to be thrown into the battlefield. The maps turn into a power struggle to gain these weapons to control the battlefield. Very well thought out. I have not played breakout but what i can see of it...looks very much like search and destroy.

Bottom line: If you are a halo fan like me...its worth the 60 dollars. Even if the campaign is not the best and not even close to being solid in my book...the multiplayer is worth the 60. That much I can tell you.

In my opinion Halo 5 is a great game. The req system seems to be pretty balanced as of now. I haven't seen anybody abuse the microtransaction function of Halo 5.

The campaign is challenging and a lot of fun overall. I never died in any unfair way and the new mechanics tie in very well with the verticality and openess of the level design. Story telling is done well and the game really transfers a sense of epicness on your TV. Though I have to say that the story itself is a little confusing. Another con is that there are some maps which seem to be straight from Halo forge (especially the ones in SWAT playlist), with some very uninspired assets.

I was really impressed from the technical side. The game runs flawless and loading times are minimal. Another thing they really improved is the matchmaking. In Halo MCC you got kicked out of matchmacking many times after finishing a match, this problem does not seem to be present anymore.

I do not understand how some people give the game 0s. I think some of them did not even play the game, as some of them only mention generic cons which have been presented in reviews on youtube.

To compensate for the haters I am going to give this game a 10.

    Cheers!

It's really intresting that pretty much all the negative reviews are clearly from Sony fanboys. If you click on their names, they pretty much have scores of 0 for two Xbox games, and actual reviews for the PS4 games.

I digress. This game is excellent, and imho the best MP experience in Halo to date, or at least in a tie with Halo 2. I haven't really gotten through the whole campaign

I haven't really gotten through the whole campaign yet, but it certainly isn't a flop as some are saying. The new modes for MP are refreshing from the same old Slayer/Objective modes, and really add to the game.

If you love MP FPS, it doesn't get much better then this.

Amazing entry of the Halo series. The multiplayer is top notch and the arena gameplay feels simply amazing and satisfying. The warzone mode adds a unique MOBA twist to it and it just feels satisfying pulling a come from behind victory. It really is a game mode for everyone. Attack bases, defend bases, go after AI, vehicles, on foot . . a game mode with everything.

    - No STAND OUT enemies/ enemy fight. (Not saying there isn't one)
    - Fireteams can be very dumb at times
    - Misleading trailers prior to release

Multiplayer aspect for me isnt a positive or negative, its OK but it doesn't stand out in my opinion.

If you love great gunplay, a cool story and the best MP this side of the Infinity....then this game is for you.
Just be ready to know your lore prior to playing, that is my biggest advice: it's pretty dense from the start.

This makes the gameplay more varied and overall more enjoyable. Warzone is something of a novelty for now, but it has potential. Playing in the arena is what it's all about for so many users and 343 have done a very good job at making a balanced multiplayer experience. The new Spartan abilities all add something to the game without being overpowered, the system is a much more refined version of the armour abilites from Halo 4, which I always thought was broken, especially the inclusion of jetpacks which are thankfully omitted from the newest installment. Combine that with the fact that Locke is maybe a half-way decent character whose personality is minimal, and you have the major complaints of the campaign.
But holy cow, do we see some of the best graphics, cut-scenes, and animations. The levels are dense with activity and paths, the weapons are keenly balanced, and the enemies are amazing. The new gameplay mechanics fit so well, it's hard to imagine them not being there before like hover-jets, dash, and pound. The story is jumpy, but that's kind've a Halo trait. The first Halo literally starts with them making a "random" jump into space and landing next to a Halo. lol "random".
Multiplayer is flawless, and I mean perfect. From the awesome new gametype including NPC's and bosses to the regular slayer, and the best lone wolf type since Halo 3. SO campaign might score a 8, but the multiplayer is a 12.
And personally, Locke aside, watching Chief's development under 343 industries is nothing less that moving. We finally see a man. It started in H4, and almost had me tearing up from the beginning. Maybe you have to have been there from the beginning, but when Locke told Chief that Cortana wasn't his problem anymore and it was Locke's, and Chief responded, "Like hell she is," I died.
And to all 80 something people who literally gave this game a 0, meaning it's literally the worst game in creation in all aspects and there's nothing good at all, go back to your PlayStations and stop searching Halo 5 on Wiki and spouting your hate.

The audio quality and visual eye candy are enough to keep me immersed in an otherwise typical Halo gameplay outing. I usually stick to the solo Campaign but the fluidity of Halo 5 may draw me in to the multiplayerverse once I've completed some of my backlog of games. Well done, 343 Industries!

This game was exactly what I was hoping for. The controls were tight and responsive, the new Spartan Abilities were just an absolute blast to utilize in combat, no more stupid Armor Abilities like Armor Lock or Decoy. Like the old days of Halo, except you feel like a highly mobile, augmented super soldier in a high tech suit of armor. The game looks fantastic, the story was a huge step up from Halo 4's (which I personally barely remember), and overall it's just fantastic. New weapons, new designs for returning weapons, as well as some alterations to a weapon's core mechanics to make them better. Case in point, the Suppressor's shots now lock on at close range. This is especially helpful against Prometheans, as it tends to target the weak points on their shoulders, chest, or back, depending on if you come at them head on or flank them.

Multiplayer is a blast too. With all the new mechanics and no more custom classes for default Slayer, it's a solid blend of old and new Slayer. The maps are considerably varied and fun, the requisition system adds an interesting twist to leveling up and earning new items. Yes, there are microtransactions for a couple dollars to buy silver and gold requisition packs, but the only items you can get from this affect Warzone, not Slayer, so you don't have to worry about Slayer becoming Pay-to-Win. Hell, it's barely even Pay-to-Win for Warzone, because you can easily rack up enough requisition points for a gold pack just by playing the game, so it's really only there for the lazy or impatient. The only items received in requisition packs that can be used in Slayer are customization options and experience/requisition point boosts. Everything else - weapons, vehicles, and power-ups - affect Warzone only.

The sound design is solid, every shot feels and sounds powerful, and the characters are phenomenal, too. The campaign focuses primarily on Spartan Locke Fireteam Osiris as they track down Chief and Blue Team, and only play as Chief and Blue Team for three missions, but I enjoyed Locke and Osiris so much that I don't even care. As much as I love Chief, it was nice to have a different lead protagonist in a main Halo game. The added mechanic of being able to direct troops was nice, too. I could draw the fire of an armored target, such as a Hunter, and maneuver it between myself and my fireteam, then order them to open fire and shred its vulnerable back. Or focus on a target that has me pinned down and I can't get a clear shot on. It allowed me to be more clever in my tactics rather than just blast everything and huck a few grenades for good measure.

All in all, 10/10. I absolutely love this game, and I'm extremely excited for the sixth installment in a few years. Good thing I've got a solid multiplayer experience to keep me occupied until then.

So many people who complain about the story.. well, let's be honest here, Halo never had a really good or amazing story, it was always simple and ok at best.

Sure, the story is a bit more complex and harder to understand for newcomers or people who don't care about the lore, but in terms of gameplay or multiplayer, this is easily the best Halo game to date and as a result, also the best FPS game since 2001.

It's not the Halo game that I personally wasn't looking for, but Halo 5 offered great visuals, fun gameplay, and awesome multiplayer at 1080p, 60 fps. Campaign was alright, but I have to wonder why Master Chief only gets 3 missions out of 15. Regardless, the game offers mobility and exploration to discover hidden intels, weapon cache, and better angle to attack from.

The weapons look and feel great especially with 60 fps which never drops. The only thing that I wished had been different was our time with chief I wish he was featured more in the game along with blue team but never the less I love this game online is great and working they way it should war zone is great if your looking for an outstanding first person shooter with a great story definitely pick up this game Expand

Even the UI is slick…you can really tell that 343i put a ton of love into this one. I’m already looking forward to all of the post-launch support coming our way. Gameplay is top stuff. In the campaign, you always have a squad with you. They work really well, but as with all AI, something may go wrong - 99% of the time though, they work just fine. Being able to give them orders is also very helpful - you can make them pick up power weapons, use vehicles, hold a position and more. In terms of multiplayer the gameplay is very well balanced - all the weapons are useful. The more lethal guns are trickier to use, so it is a game that rewards skill. Learn these weapons well, and you can really do some damage. Also, the matches are always close, with teams only 5-10 kills apart, so every match is intense.

The campaign experience is superb - if you know about the lore. If not, it will be a bit confusing. Good level design, good story, good gameplay - this is an excellent campaign. I would consider taking off a half point MAYBE for the fact the story might need a touch of familiarity with the lore. It is still none the less, a very entertaining campaign, and the vast majority of the story makes sense, with or without the knowledge of the lore.

Warzone is just amazing. That's all there is to it. 12v12vAI. Earning req packs to customise your spartan and get cool gear for the warzone mode. Warthogs and ghosts and wraiths and scorpions and everything just going hell for leather killing each other. An absolute masterclass of how multiplayer should be done.

Overall, a great game, really good campaign, fantastic multiplayer, definitely worth the buy. The promise of free DLC and the prospect of forge dropping in December leave even more to look forward to. Overall, the game truly deserves a 9.5-10/10.

If you are a long time fan of Halo go ahead and leave your expectations at the door because 343 studios has gone a completely different direction with 5. If you are newer to the series this game has plenty enough content to suck you in. Rather than ramble on jumping from point to point I will rate each category by itself.

Campaign: I haven't finished it yet but am very close to completion. The story so far is very good. Regardless of the limited Master Chief portion its still really good but has fallen just short of a masterpiece. As it relates to Halo 4 its a little bit longer and requires a bit more attention.

Multiplayer: Multiplayer has and always will be what draws me to Halo so its important that this mode be really really good in order for me to give it a slam dunk review. Luckily the multiplayer is so good I can't begin to describe how impressed I am. Warzone provides a breath of fresh air to the slayer/btb/swat multiplayer modes which can still be found in the Arena section. The playing card system is still a little weird but doesn't draw away from the experience at all.

Graphics: AMAZING. Nothing else to say.

Sound: The weapons sound a bit different and the enemies sound really good. If you have surround sound you should pump it through your speakers to get what is in my opinion one of the best sounding games on the planet.

Controls: The controls took me a little bit to get used to. They feel a little bit looser than the controls of more recent Halo games (Reach and 4). This isn't to say they are bad at all but the seasoned veteran will probably need an hour or so to get used to the loose control style. I don't dig aiming down the sights as much as I did in H4 but its still pretty good.

Overall: 10/10 its everything I expected and more. I am really happy with my purchase and you should be too. If you are a CoD fanboy or haven't ever really liked Halo I doubt you will this time around, no sense in even sinking the dough into the game, But if you love Halo you will love this game for sure. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys sci-fi shooters. Don't let the negative reviews quell you, its absolutely worth the price tag and will provide hours of fun.

The level design is amazing as well (exept missions 4,9 and 11) Almost every mission plays differently with different combinations of weapons and vehicles. There is always more than one way of dealing with the groups of enemies you encounter, some people are just too dumb or too lazy to see the breakable walls, hidden weapons and vehicles. On the multiplayer side, Warzone is a great addition because it plays in a unique all out war way where kills aren't always the most important. Tho its lacking more maps for warzone and many classic game modes it's quite enough to keep you entertaining until the loads of free dlc arrive. Overall I give it a 9.5. Although it's not perfect. 9/10 - only thing keeping the game from a 10 is that the story is (at times) a little rushed. There were a few instances where it felt like a cutscene ended too early, a key piece of dialogue wasn't said, or a transition explaining how our characters got to B from A was a bit rushed...

Beyond that, shooter gameplay, graphics, campaign, MP - all some of the best the series has ever had.

I also did not feel like there was that one defining campaign level, where the scale/scope of battle was just so... HALO but it got close.

H5 was a more personal story at a more personal level, so it didn't need those grand set pieces, but it still had a few that came close enough.

The campaign is actually quite good but stumbles a bit due to the narrative being gargled for the first 1/3 of the game. The feud between Master Chief and Locke (under the orders of ONI) is the huge buildup to this game, which makes it curious why it was so quickly solved in the campaign. The rest of the story ends up being a gem and, without spoiling it, sets up Halo 6 to be the most epic Halo ever (very similarly to the way Mass Effect 2 setup Mass Effect 3). I can't help but like how thing ended up on this end, especially with a great feature in 4-player online co-op (though there's no split-screen). The campaign is a bit short (7.5 hrs on Heroic for me, solo), which is a negative. Had the marketed focal point of this Halo game been explored more, this would have been hands-down the best Halo ever made. As for the multiplayer, it's good. Compared to the campaign, you can feel a bit of drag in the movement systems. They're seemingly slowed a bit, so it might take you a little while to adjust. Once you've spent enough time on this side of the game you will feel more adjusted. Speaking of adjustments, 343 definitely tweaked the aiming system of the game. It doesn't have that nice gliding snap-to aiming of Call of Duty nor does it have the more precise feeling of earlier Halo games. 343 have apparently made the ADS (aim down sight) function require practice before mastering. That's fine, but it took me a week to really get the hang of it. Now I do fairly well in MP. The new REQ system acts like Titanfall's burn cards, earned through all multiplayer and awarded through card packs that are earned through achievements on the battlefield. It's a cool system. Someone that doesn't go all-out on their best cards at a moments notice will can store up quite the arsenal and change the battlefield single-handedly in some cases. But the REQ level system put into play during the games themselves prevents rare cards that are clearly more powerful than 95% of what's available on the battlefield from being abused. So there's balance. There's also a small micro-transaction option to quickly attain more REQ packs, but this only ups the number of cards you can pick up. They don't change the game landscape as everything is random (so you could spend $25 and only pick up a few really good items/vehicles to work with). These micro-transactions are probably a big part of why the DLC for Halo 5 is all free. That's right, not a single dime will be spent getting new maps, game modes, etc. Speaking of those things, the map rotation is a little light @ launch, but amazingly 343 Industries has already readied a map pack for rollout 3 weeks after launch. These kind of regular DLC packs are fully expected and are partially community-based through Forge creations. The first DLC pack is bringing in the Big Team Battle on top of a few new maps. Warzone is where you play the REQ cards, a 12v12 battleground that mixes in some computer enemies that can help a losing team rally when getting tossed around player-to-player. It always keeps a team in the game until the very last point needed is scored. Arena is your 4v4 variant and, surprisingly, isn't the strong suit of this game anymore. Heavy competitors will still lean toward the smaller player sets, but Warzone commands the most attention as you can take up to 11 of your friends along with you. In the end, Halo 5 is a good game that missed a few marks from making it an amazing game. Critics averaged around an ~85 metascore, and I think that's where this game belongs. It stands out in a season of big-name shooters (Fallout 4, Black Ops 3, SW Battlefront) as one of the better options (obviously, Fallout 4 is going to edge out Halo). I really had to hang with the game for a bit, but once I got a fireteam of 5 other friends together to hit up Warzone, I was glad I purchased this game. It won't keep me from thinking "what if", but there's still one more Halo game to prove that 343 Industries have always been capable of carrying the Halo mantle. Perhaps the greatest mystery and the biggest opportunities is thinking about what comes next for Halo once this story is settled? Expand

Well, I've waited a long time for this game. The campaign is indeed not quite as good as previous halo games. So, I'm giving this a 10 to counter all of the pointlessly low 0 scores. Which are guaranteed to happen with halo. The multiplayer is the best since halo 3. Absolutely phenomenal, balanced. Competitive. We back.

All the reviews about this game are very mixed. But the population and fan base to Halo is very different to other fan bases fro other FPS games. All i can say is that you will have allot of fun playing this game and even more with friends.

Wonderful game, people that say the graphics are bad I have to disagree there are a few graphic glitches (2 in the whole campaign) that make it look bad , but that is like for 1/2 seconds in the whole campaign.

The game itself gameplay wise is amazing, both on campaign as on multiplayer. The new Warzone system is fun and is a good change. I have bought every Halo until now on

Halo 5 is better then Halo 4, the story, the gameplay and ofc the multiplayer are way better.

Buying this game I had no expectations. I have been a long time Halo fan since Halo: Combat Evolved back in 2001. I have probably logged more hours in Halo games than any other game. That having been said, this game looks like Halo, has iconic characters and guns from Halo, but this game does not feel like Halo. I'm not sure how else to describe it. Little things really. For example, when you fire the Battle Rifle it almost seems as if it is not burst firing because the fire animation seems so much more rushed than the old Battle Rifle. Just the subtle smoothness of weapon handling does not feel the same. Grenades feel rushed as well and are much harder to predict where they will go than they were before in previous Halo games.

As for the story, it was underwhelming as well, but the more I play this Halo, the more I feel like playing The Master Chief Collection instead. I think much of the problem is this game was not developed by Bungie- It is just a Microsoft franchise now and they don't have the experience to pull off what Bungie did for years.

This game is an incomplete mess. At launch this game is missing a ton of gametypes as well as missing split screen, lan, and forge mode. Halo 5's map selection was advertised as the largest and most varied for any Halo game to date. This is untrue, many of the maps that came with the game are just forge maps that took no effort for the dev team to make. Besides that we are given 5 true arena maps, 3 of which are just remixes of midship, if midship were 3 times larger and filled with clutter. I haven't bothered to play any of the warzone maps, due to that mode's use of microtransactions.

The story is just bad and plays out like fanfiction. I'll leave it at that to avoid spoilers.

Other gripes: aiming feels clunky due to deadzones and aim acceleration, ranking system does not match players by rank, Master Chief is only in 3 out of the 15 missions, weapon sounds seem weak. ADS blocks part of the screen when zoomed in on certain weapons despite functioning the same as previous games, effectively making this mechanic a downgrade.

I don't know what is going on at 343 but the fact that they continue to release broken and unfinished games every year is a major problem. Their we'll fix it later mentality will kill this franchise. It's beyond my understanding how Bungie was able to release fully functioning Halo 3 way back in 07 filled with features and customization options after 3 years dev time, yet 343 with a larger staff and an equal amount of time can ony manage a game with about half the content of H3.

The single player in this game is not a scratch on the stories that bungie were able to produce, the new characters are boring as is the short story, that ends on a terrible cliff hanger, very unlike halo 2's cliff hanger ending which made me desperately play more, halo 5's makes me want to forget this completely

I don't have the time to enjoy multiplayer, and the campaign story wasn't just bad, it was abysmal, I beat the campaign on heroic in 7 hours of straight gaming and in the end I wanted to grasp some hope that the ending was gonna be good but instead all I felt was that the narrative could not have been more disjointed and **** up then it was. It is nothing like hunt the truth, it is nothing like the ad campaign, they never really wanted to hurt the chief there was no stress about locke and the chief really hashing it out. In the end they portrayed locke as if in equal standing to the chief and made one of my most favorite characters a villain who made positively no sense. The end of the game left me both mystified and tremendously frustrated as all it made me feel was that the whole campaign was the prolouge to halo 6. This review is based on the campaign experience which is honestly why I bought the game and I cannot be any more angry with how **** the campaign is. Expand

Dropping features such as split screen that where core to the series makes it a no buy.

343 seems to have already long track word of saying one thing and then doing another, here's hoping they retcon halo's 4 and 5, then Master Chief wakes up from cryo-sleep. with a relieved sound in his voice saying "oh thank god it was a terrible dream"

Halo 5 has lost everything that was halo, playing with your friends in one room and yelling at the guy next to you for assassinating you or screen peeking. and 2 people jumping on the guy with the tank so the other guy can kill the tank in game. its fun to play for one single person but because you cannot play splitscreen, in my opinion 343 industries you have ruined the HALO experience.Halo 5 has lost everything that was halo, playing with your friends in one room and yelling at the guy next to you for assassinating you or screen peeking. and 2 people jumping on the guy with the tank so the other guy can kill the tank in game. its fun to play for one single person but because you cannot play splitscreen, in my opinion 343 industries you have ruined the HALO experience. Just go back and look at your favorite halo games, halo 2 and halo 3, halo 2 had one of the best stories ever and this story doesnt match up, not even close. halo 3 has forge and crazy splitscreen local playability. i remember the first map me and my brother made and played together, he was always building these intricate race courses and i would test them for him. but it never got boring. there was always something different. and you could always call a friend to come over and have a game night and play some halo together, not anymore. HALO 5 is no longer HALO it is now RANDOM SPACE-AGE SHOOTER 5. I will not be buying this after playing it at a friends house expecting to play halo, was extremely dissapointed. Expand

Another rushed Halo game. No surprises here, but it's also unfinished. Pitiful number of multiplayer maps, no big team battle, no forge mode. Custom games are pretty much impossible because of this. I'm also not happy with the agenda 343 have. Campaign is just terrible and filled with sjw dribble. The shills are trying really hard to keep the fake reviews up.

Absolutely disappointing. The campaign is weak and the multiplayer became nothing but Call of Duty clone. What was once a unique experience is now just a memory replaced by this garbage. Wait to get till it's $40

This game is a big let down for long time Halo fans. The pure fact that there is no local co op and no online guest is absolutely absurd for a Halo game. Seems to be the normal in this gen to have minimal content at launch and add more later with DLC and microtransaction. Halo 5: Guardians is okay. Its campaign is rubbish, but the multiplayer is solid thanks to the foundation it’s built upon. Warzone is a really enjoyable experience, and while combat is still mostly about tossing grenades and hitting the melee button, the whole Requisition gimmick adds some much-needed flavor to proceedings.

The latest Halo is a big deal only for hardcore Halo fans. For me the single player campaign was unbearably pompous and despite 1080p and 60 fps the visuals are not as breathtaking as they once were in Halo 4. The game builds a solid foundation for Halo 6, but it’s not one of those games you absolutely have to play. [13/2015, p.48]

With a more accessible and engaging story and solid new designs for the Prometheans, Halo 5 is a major improvement over Halo 4. Warzone is a great addition to the multiplayer, though the mode seems to have some game balance issues. [Nov 2015]
