Sadly all the good work above is undermined by the decision to go with a fully voiced protagonist which has led to a limitation in outcomes which means whilst there are different speech options they all wind up with basically the same result, a fundamental part of titles like fallout and the elder scrolls game is choice, or the illusion of choice and dare I say it the ability to role play which again is inhibited by the voiced player character, unfortunately for Bethesda the voiced player character has hurt their game and the high point of the modern fallout series remains New Vegas.

Fallout 4 is worth a purchase and at least a single play through, the setting is fun and following recent patches the game is much more stable, if you go into this game knowing that this isn't another skyrim where you are going to immerse yourself in the game for thousands of hours you will not be disappointed, go into this game thinking the opposite and you will be.

In summary a solid game that is overshadowed by the quality of previous titles in the franchise.

The Post-Season pass review of Fallout 4 from a dedicated Fallout fan:

I will be frank, I don't think Bethesda had the players in mind when they made the game. The initial release of the game was SOOO exciting for me, and I was met with a dilemma a couple weeks after playing the game a bit. Get this, I bought an Xbox One JUST to play Fallout 4 because my laptop isn't strong enough to handle the game in its full glory; I loved the last 2 fallout titles so much that I didn't need to play the game to know it was incredible and full of gameplay.

    But I was wrong.

At first, I was amazed by all of the new mechanics. I didn't particularly care for how they changed VATs, power armor, level up system, or how the every-playthrough-worthy companion Dogmeat was reduced to a dumb ass german shepard whose sole purpose is to get in the way of your walking path and line of fire, or the "Legendary Items" system. What they focused on were the aesthetics of the game- a giant, seemingly full map full of variety, and remodeling the creatures and weapons, and they left out crucial components that made Fallout 3, New Vegas, and even Skyrim amazingly fun, high-replay value games.

After 2 weeks of playing it and accumulating around a hundred hours of gameplay, I stopped my wishful thinking that the game would get better and realized that they RUINED fallout. There were always missions and items that I had fun doing and obtaining solely from the knowledge and experience of my last playthrough, which added life to the game. For instance, in New Vegas, I always got Chance's Knife, Love and Hate, and the YCS gauss rifle as soon as I started the game- they were my favorite weapons in every playthrough, and were as powerful as the skill points I assigned to them were- much like The Terrible Shotgun in Fallout 3, or how I walked to get dogmeat immediately after entering the wasteland. There were plenty of unique items and interactions that I thoroughly enjoy and remember from both of those games- I could go on for hours and hours. The point being, the variety of experiences kept my interest peaked for long periods of time, and with so much to do in one save, it was never dull to see or do those things again, maybe differently in the next playthrough.

Fallout 4 demolished that value. I played fallout 3 all the way through countless times, totaling about 1200 hours of gameplay. I played New Vegas almost 40 times- totaling abut 1600 hours. I played skyrim until I just simply couldn't have a new experience- for over 2500 hours.

    I.

    F***ing.

    Love.

    Bethesda.

But fallout 4 is soooooo monotonous. They made a map that was way too big to fill and they bit off more than they could chew filling it with unique things to do. The glowing sea for instance takes up about 1/8th of the total map and literally the only thing there is a high chance to spawn monsters. There are no unique items to tiptoe through hordes of deathclaws to, nor are there even any items to pick up for that matter. Its a walkthrough gallery of CGI garbage- literally. There is a giant city, FULL of locations to discover and massive buildings, but most of them have nothing more than low-level enemies and scrap in them.

When it comes down to it, the most substantial amount of your time with fallout 4 is collecting BS so that you can build a crappy settlement that serves no real purpose but to house your mounds upon mounds of worthless loot and trading for ammo which always seems to be in short supply- no matter how powerful your weapon- another bothersome aspect. I can't simply walk to Evergreen Mills and get myself a legendary weapon that is universally good against enemies, I have to make due with the OKAY weapons that you need a ton of parts and leveling to improve.

The story of this game is trash. "Like, dude, what if in fallout 4, instead of a son wanting to venture out of the safety of the vault to find his dad, we had a dad in a vault he didn't want to be venture out to find his son?" On that note, I think enough is said. The idea of the institute and androids being connected- is just forced. It would be like finding out your dad was the leader of the enclave in fallout 3. It's just stupidly unoriginal.

And to top off the rest of the disappointments, the season pass was about as worthless to improving the game as possible. It just forced a bunch of impractical devices and patch-worthy new items into the crafting menu, and included 2 very small, clearly rushed expansion packs known as Far Harbor and Nuka World. The rest of the DLCs were low-interest settlement upgrades that people would have just modded into the damn game if they really wanted them.

THAT is why I think it deserves a 1/10. One point for keeping my stupid, gullible ass occupied for about 250 hours. Had they released the DLC all at once, I would have stopped after realizing there was nothing more to come. Here is 5000 characters worth of what I think of Fallout 4, summarized:

I get why many people like this game but it is just riddled with too many game breaking issues for me to be among them. Yes it is a large world to wander across and I guess you can at a stretch say that you can play it through in a couple of different ways but for a AAA release in this day and age to still have your main character jumping like a poorly animated clown and clumsily bumping his way through doorways and getting caught on debris as you fail yet again to avoid a hidden mine or an unlimited supply of grenades chucked superbly by idiotic AI enemies at your feet, there really is no excuse while you reluctantly reload your last save to do the clustercluck of a mission again, only to watch your companion blunder their way into your line of fire and set some maddening excuse for a combat scenario off again.
Like many others have stated, the RPG elements are woefully over looked and really come down to collect this and make that but ultimately any weapon or armour that you may have spent an age lovingly crafting out of a chore of ingredients can be just as easily found after killing some random villain which makes the whole effort pointless and the storyline really cannot be defended by anyone with any imagination to be more than go here and kill some dudes. There are the shelter/sim section is painful to maintain and manage and I guess the worst crime that this game is guilty of is being boring, I have plodded my way through for 20 odd hours and am just sick of every character including my own and feel no connection with any of them. Now I know that there are gamers that obviously don't think that this is the case and I'm honestly glad that there are folk out there enjoying themselves but when you consider games with plots and characters like the Mass Effect series and sublime animations and character movements of titles like the previous Uncharted games, all of which came out years ago, then there really is no excuse for such a clumsy and ugly offering to be slapped on the shelves (and by ugly I don't even mean the shonky graphics but rather the nasty interface, debilitating controls and all-round laziness of the design)
I am a long time gamer, I have played everything from the original Elite on my Acorn Electron to Angry Birds on my phone and everything in-between so I am not new to gaming or the flaws that can be found in even the best games but the very essence of this title really does just make me shake my head. We should be expecting better of such big releases and the studios should be a hell of a lot more innovative rather than just banging out something so very broken. Shame on them.

When I first played I thought this was an unbelivable game then after 25 hours when I decided to go threw the main mission I realised ''well that's it'' I completed all the side quests in 25 hours, except for the minor ones. I spent hundred of hours playing Skyrim and this is only a mere 30 hours to complete pretty much everything.

The perk system is just boring. It seems you have a lot to unlock until you realise 75% of the perks are pointless.

Buy it under 40$ it is still a pretty good 25 hours of play time which is better than a lot of games.

But it doesn't have them so you will probably end up abandoning the game after 2 missions to wander about killing and collecting stuff, going back to sanctuary after dark so the annoying NPC's won't bother you while you dump your stuff and, when you have built a nice collection of weapons, you'll just build yourself a nice little hut somewhere out of the way and sit on the porch with your rifle, alone. When I first turned on Fallout 3 years ago it was amazing to say the least. The open endedness of it, the deep levels of interaction, the heavy and depressing world- it all combined to create one of the greatest gaming experiances ever. Now Fallout 4 is good (maybe great) but fails to capture that feeling of Fallout 4. Lets start then with what Fallout 4 does worse.

    Worse
-The world lacks the same heavy depressing feeling found in Fallout 3. This does not feel like a world ravaged by nuclear war- but rather a dirty city. It lacks that authticity that made F3 so great
-There is almost no world interaction. The days of trying to find a way around a mission by pickpocketing, or hacking, or speech checks is over. EVERY mission is shot everything and leave. Without fail- every single mission.
-The factions are less engaging, the plot less believable
    -Character motivations seem forced
-Graphics, while generally better, are too cartoonish. It lacks that raw brutality found in F3.
-No Karma system!!! Makes no sense
-You'll never steal or even be temped to because the world of F4 is plentiful and provides all the **** you need. It lacks the feeling of a apocalyptic wasteland
    -Stronger story
-F4 lacks the awesome RPG systems of F3. It lacks any skills- instead of upgrading your "big guns" or "medicine" skill and then picking a perk- you just pick a perk. It restricts the level of engagement with the character.

    Better
    -WAY WAY better shooting mechanics
-The whole "pick your ending" thing was really cool
    -Great companions
-More diverse and jam packed world
    -Great side missions, more developed
    -Power armor is better
    -Weapon crafting
    -General armor is better
    -No weapon degrading, thank god
    -Weapon diversity is great
    -Larger arsenal of weapons
-Settlement system is cool but lacks any real use, seems half finished and undeveloped. Could be added onto and made better though

Sadly Fallout 4 is not a step towards a better game. Rather it is a small step back. Don't get me wrong it is a fun game and I loved it. However Bethesda abandoned the deep RPG elements and involved world in favor of making a strong shooting game. It needs to have a return to form for the series before it becomes another COD shooter, in a long line of COD shooters

The end may disappoint many gamers.
The RPG system is very washed down in terms that you may not be able to affect the outcome in most of cases but the dialog will give you more details about given situation. The game's engine feels very outdated at the beginning but after a while this may not bother much - well, expect very rough characters graphical representations.
The "mmincraft/sims" feature is completely unnecessary but I can see many players having fun with building staff.

The story was promising enough that I felt compelled to play it. However, the sidequests were painfully repetitive and boring. The gameplay for combat gets pretty dull too as your "moves" are limited, relying heavily on VATS. I invested over 100 hrs of gameplay and slowly followed along the main story. Oh and building things for your settlement was annoying, and discourages players from building things properly as it takes a lot of time. I must admit, there were some choices that really test your integrity as a person. However having said that, in order to achieve the best bang for the buck in terms of experience and slices of more story content, you need to be shrewd and not act as high and mighty. I would have rated this game a 8 except the ending kinda suck. I get the message but I didn't get the any satisfaction. I wasn't like "what, that's it?". Was more of "what, that's the ending? Ok where's the real ending". Ok I said some not so good stuff about the game. Here are a few good points for it: choices of how you want this story to end. Despite of a lot of complaints with dialogues and voice overs, I found them decent. Good arsenal of weapons you can wield, depending on your preference. Good perks selection, all are useful and makes it really hard to choose which one to take and improve on. Pretty good score (sound/music). In my opinion, it is worth playing at a cost of $50, not $80 -- and Witcher 3 kicks Fallout 4's ass in most aspects. Expand

The game has no RPG element, other than designing what your character looks like. The new voiced dialogue is horrendous and gives vague options like, Choice = Sorry, Character says: "Sorry your daughter was too stupid to not run away", on top of that, practically everything you say is just another way of saying yes. Pretty much it goes like this: yes = yes, no = yes, sarcastic = yes, whereas in Skyrim, your choices would actually affect the quest. Also, the story in general is just boring. I had to force myself to play a bit more before just giving up. There were also some things that didn't make sense, like, how is it that your character's wife can easily use a power armor without any training? I understand how your military-veteran could do it, but his inexperienced wife? The game didn't come with choices as well. In Skyrim, you were the hero of the land, but you could still be evil. In FO:4, however, you can simply be slightly naughty in how you phrase things. The only thing Bethesda did well was in making a stable gun play system. In fact, FO:4 is mostly an adventure-shooter rather than an RPG.

    As a shooter 7/10

    As an RPG 4/10

I didn't like this and I just can't imagine how a hard-core fan feels, don't waste your time on this game.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are two of my all time favorite games. So, like most people, I was extremely hyped for Fallout 4. I think it is always good to start out with good news and improvements so here we go

    The Good:

Graphics: While the facial animations and character movements are still mediocre to say the least, the environment of Fallout 4 is beautiful. The changes in weather, The skyscrapers of downtown Boston, and the barren wastelands of places like the Glowing Sea all look great. The map is large and filled with locations to explore.

Combat: The combat in Fallout defiantly improves on Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I find myself now doing more hip firing than using V.A.T.S. in most situations. Shooting any weapon feels a lot smoother now and the upgraded V.A.T.S. is a nice touch.

Settlements: The addition of settlements is defiantly something I was looking forward too. While clumsy at times, it still manages to bring a more interactive and addicting way of building your own homes around the wasteland. You can build your own major town and invite settlers to live with you.

    The Disappointing:

As a pretty hardcore fan of fallout 3 and new vegas, I never would of thought I would be giving fallout 4 a 7/10. Sadly, there is a good bit that was disappointing as a long time fan.

Perk and Skill System: This started off very confusing and overwhelming. The fact that everything was mixed together did not appeal to me at all.

Main Story and Side Quests: No spoilers, but the main quest of Fallout 4 seemed very dull and quick. I loved how it started off, but after the "major twist", things started feeling rushed. Before you know, the game is over and the ending was bland. Main stories have never been Bethesda's strong suit, but I expected more out of a game this long coming. While there is a fairly large amount of side quests, most of them feel empty and not as in depth as the previous Fallouts. Most never have any large effect on the game or story, and over very quickly.

Fallout 4 is still very much a great RPG and I am still enjoying my time playing it. Honestly, I did expect a lot more from it, based on the time it took to develop and the high expectations. I feel like Bethesda missed out on a lot of key things that made Fallout 3 and New Vegas so good.

This is my first Fallout game, and i say it was an amazing experience. The game play felt right, i had a lot of playing it. The only thing that bother me was the story line, it was really bad, and felt forced, feels missing, like they will probably shove it all into DLC, but in my book that an 'F'. I still has fun though, and definitely recommend playing it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4 is a game that fans of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas will find overly simplistic and dulled down compared to its predecessors. however as a standalone game it is a perfect blend of tight shooting mechanics and simple to understand RPG mechanics, which allows the player to focus more on the story and their interactions with other characters, rather than worrying about skills and such. The story in the game is average, it's main feature is morality regarding AI, but it is ruined by the fact that 3 endings are just copy-pasted with different dialogue and the other one is lazy at best.

To get full enjoyment, don't think of it like Fallout 3/New Vegas and focus on side quests.

    The Pros

1- The graphics and animations are more detailed and realistic. The framerate is higher and the definition better. It was based on the Skyrim engine -- and it shows.

2- The game is less glitchy than previous entries and operates a lot smoother. There are fewer load screens, for example.

3- The combat system is much improved thanks to the new slo-mo version of VATS, the additions of a sprint function, a gun melee option and a grenade hotkey.

4- The expanded weapon crafting system is fun. Gradually improving your arsenal and customizing it to your preferences by rebuilding them is nifty innovation. Being able to name weapons is a nice add-on.

5- The player can now romance companions. It is awfully chaste, but you can romance multiple ones including same-sex characters.

    Cons

1- The graphics, while better, lack the proper "feel." The game resembles Skyrim more than it does a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It just isn't stark & desolate enough.

2- The game is less immersive. The new stats and leveling up systems give the player fewer ways to customize their character. The removal of the karma system means player actions have less weight. Giving the player character one bland, generic voice no matter what race you choose for them doesn't help either. The player also doesn't know what exactly their character will say when they choose dialogue options, resulting in unintentional results at times.

3- The storyline is problematic. Unlike in the earlier games the player character starts off with an extremely urgent goal, namely finding their kidnapped newborn child. This runs counter to the inevitable sidequest sidetracking the game imposes, inadvertently making the player feel like a **** negligent parent every time they return to the main quest.

4- The removal of weapons & (most) armor degradation is a mistake. It may have clashed with the new, expanded crafting system, but taking it out removes one of the key challenges to playing the game and one of its most immersive elements. The fact that the designers did include it for power armor only highlights the issue.

5- Many of the weapons look ugly. The designs are presumably intentionally meant to look clunky and purely functional as opposed to sleek and cool, but why is there nothing like a simple AR-15 or pump-action 12 gauge shotgun in the game?

6- The new Pip-Boy system is actually less user-friendly. The layout is more cluttered and less intuitive, making it harder to navigate.

7- Boston just doesn't provide as interesting of a setting as DC or Las Vegas. DC emphasized the game's politics, history and satire as well as providing some stunningly iconic visuals. Las Vegas allowed for a riot of different themes -- the wild west, rat pack-era Vegas, the Mafia and Elvis. Boston has baseball, the colonial-era history and ... that is pretty much it.

Still, many Bethesda fans or just players who enjoy exploring unfamiliar worlds will be satisfied with it, as it has one of the richest, most detailed game worlds ever created. Lore is presented to the player in different ways around every corner of the game world. Together with the masterfully crafted sound design it will help immerse even newcomers in the interesting world of Fallout. The game also has a lot to offer to gun nuts as the game features improved shooting and an expansive crafting system that takes resources from the clutter in the open world.

However, Fallout 4 is a big departure from the franchise in terms of its way of storytelling and RPG mechanics, which will most likely disappoint long-time fans of the franchise. It is apparent that BGS have taken inspiration from other popular games. It seems to me that in the beginning of the development cycle of the game, the developers asked the question “can we” too many times and didn’t ask the question “should we” enough. As a result the narrative of the game suffers, as the actions of the player often contradict with or completely undermine the meaning of the main story of the game.

For the first time in a Bethesda game, the protagonist is given strictly defining traits that force them to follow a linear path towards an endgame goal. This not only limits the possibilities for role playing, but it creates a pseudo narrative dissonance between the actions that the player makes during the main quests and the rest of their journey in the open world. On one hand the game tries to be an emotional story about family and difficult choices. On the other, it tries to tell a story about hope, building a new healthy community in the post-apocalyptic world. Unfortunately it does not spend enough time on any of these two sides and fails to tell a coherent story as a result of their inability to exist in correlation.

This new way of storytelling is totally uncalled for and it betrays the philosophy of player freedom that BGS has always had. Fallout 4 is a lesser RPG in almost every aspect, even compared to Fallout 3: The removal of the karma system (and the ability to role play as an evil persona); The new “dialogue wheel” which only gives the illusion of choice but ultimately lacks any consequences; The voiced protagonist with defined traits and goals; The removal of skills making your character inexplicably proficient in any kind of weapon and power armor from the very start of the game; The overall lack of choice in quests or the illusion of such. All of these aspects were hallmarks of the franchise and, in my opinion, made the previous Fallout games one of the best RPG games of all time.

Moreover, the quest scripts themselves are repetitive, uninspired and boring. In terms of their mechanics, the quests of Fallout 4 could very well exist in an MMORPG, just in bigger numbers. All quest objectives can be narrowed down to: Acquire X item, place X item, kill X NPC, talk to X NPC, escort X NPC. Inexplicably, 95% of the population of the Commonwealth consists of generic, respawning enemies to kill in an attempt by Bethesda to bring the franchise to the mainstream audience of action hungry FPS players.

The lack of innovation in the mechanics of the game might very well be due to engine limitations. Unsurprisingly, Bethesda decided to use an upgraded version of the engine that they used for Skyrim. This is not the first time that the Fallout franchise receives this kind of treatment as Fallout 3 used an upgraded version of Oblivion's engine. It might have made sense at the time, as Fallout 3 was Bethesda’s first try at the IP and there was a certain amount of risk involved but it cannot be justified after the huge success of both Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

There has been an argument that the team behind these games is considerably small and they like to keep it this way because they are used to working with each other. This is possibly the biggest lie that Bethesda’s PR team has come up with and anyone with even a little knowledge about the game industry can pick it apart. I am totally fine with BGS keeping their artists and world designers and writers as they are. However, the choice by Bethesda not to hire more software engineers and graphics designers is a purely business decision since those types of employees rarely have any influence on the overall theme of the game. It is unforgivable for a AAA title in 2015 to have so many bugs, to look considerably worse than other games that came out in the same year while running poorly. This is not the quality that we should expect from the company behind some of the best selling games of the decade. As long as the community shows that they are willing to forgive poor mechanics, ugly, not optimized textures and game breaking bugs, BGS will keep releasing games in an unfinished state.

This game is OK. But this just ins't my style of game. It takes why too much time to get invested into the game and the graphics aren't that good. I don't really like this game but it's not because of the graphics it's just too hard for me to be interested in this game. So I brought it back. If you have patience and like slow gameplay, buy this game if not, just ignore this game.

It's a very experimental game. One that adds some surprising new features to the Fallout formula while also making changes to some of the already existing ones. While not all of the changes are for the better, Bethesda still gives gamers plenty of reasons to get lost in Fallout 4's world.

I'm going to start off by getting the bad of Fallout 4 out of the way. A big aspect of this series has always been player choice. I don't mean in just what kind of character you'll build or how you'll approach combat. Your influence on the story and world around you have always been significant to the experience. Fallout 4 still has all of that, but it's noticeably dumbed down.

There's no karma system and the only big choices you make are which faction to side with in the end. Admittedly that is pretty big decision to make as whichever fraction you side with becomes the dominant force in the Commonwealth. However that still feels lacking compared to the previous games' ability to throw numerous morality decisions at you that really got you thinking. You genuinely felt that your influence on the world was more than just setting up who rules the land. It also doesn't help that you feel like you get locked into one group too early. Once you stick with one there isn't much chance to learn about the others. It feels less you're making the best choice based on the groups goals, and more like blindly following without knowing their full goal(s). Like I said this aspect of the game feels dumbed down. Like an afterthought compared to the rest of the gameplay options. A pretty significant hit to the series.

However, Bethesda still delivers in just about every other department. While you influence on the story does feel lacking in comparison to previous Fallouts, you can still feel like you are influencing the world and your character. You get some exciting new abilities as you level up and dive into the massive amount of perks the game offers. You can really build any character you want. You can be a stealth master, melee tank, long to medium range gun expert, or the type of person who talks their way out of everything.

The game also puts a big emphasis on crafting. You can acquire settlements and build them up however you like. The amount of armor and weapon mods allow you to customize your gear to your liking. However doing any of this requires a lot of resources. Those random items laying around the wasteland finally have some use. However the need to collect and break down so much of it kept me from really diving into it. Those with a taste for this kind of thing though are sure to be pleased with the amount of options available. Growing you settlements and keeping the inhabitants happy is remarkably sim-like and feels like another game inside your game.

If that's not your thing Fallout still delivers plenty of quests, combat, and exploration to sink your teeth into. The new iron sights system makes the non-Vats action so much better. Exploring the world can still lead you to plenty of goodies and hidden surprises. You stumble on plenty of new enemy types and more difficult variations of the standard enemies. Outside of some repeating chains that ask you to do the same things over and over again, the side-quests are just as entertaining as ever. They often add cool new stories that take place outside of the main-quest. Unfortunately they don't add much more notable decision making.

One thing you'll notice about the game is that it borrows a dialog wheel and fully-voiced player character from Bioware. While that falls short due to the, again, dumbed down decision making, you'll notice it's not the only thing they borrow. Your interactions with companions are more meaningful this time. Just like in Bioware games gaining your followers trust is important as they watch your actions. It doesn't reach the same depth, but it's a cool new addition. Especially since you can romance them this time around.

Fallout 4 experiments with a lot of things. Most of which pays of really well. While the notes Bethesda has taken form Bioware appear to have been hastily scribbled and the decision making is lacking, the developers manage to deliver in other ways. It can be downright brilliant at times, and not just on the gameplay side of things. It stumbles with some of what made Fallout so great in the first place, but there's still plenty to love here for those who are willing to except it's faults or at the very least not blow them wildly out of proportion. In a time where gaming is becoming more and more multiplayer-centric, Fallout returns and delivers another lengthy single-player experience that's filled with content. The majority of which is excellent.

It forces you to get creative, which is an area that most games fail in. The variety in weapons and enemies are fantastic, and there have been numerous battles that have really got my heart pounding. The variety in builds are also great, allowing you tons of options to customized your character through traits and clothing. Some people have complained about the graphics, but I think they're fine. If you use mods, like Springtime in the Commonwealth, it will greatly improve the landscape, and make it feel less baron and depressing. Mods in general greatly improve the game in my opinion, especially during a second play-through. The world is large like the other fallout games, but they learned from their mistakes and added more urban areas to make the world feel a little more dense. Being able to customize your weapons and armor is also nice.

Now for the cons: Like fallout 3, the game suffers from a sub-par story, an unsatisfying ending, and non-memorable characters. They also dumbed down the dialog system, making it so you can only respond with Yes, No, Sarcastic, and what the hell are you talk about? This makes it so you don't actually know what your character is going to say in a conversation, not like it really matters because the choices you make don't really make any difference. This is a game that brags about have a **** ton of dialog, but it's mostly post-apocalyptic psycho-babble that gets tedious very quickly. They also destroyed the desire to go out on your own and discover new locations. You'll come across a cool building and go inside and clear it, but later on in the game you'll be given a random quest that sends you there anyway, making it pointless to have gone there before the quest. Pretty much all the side quests are dumb, randomly-generated fetch quests, and you'll have to do a bunch of them if you want to progress in one of the 4 factions. Like all of bethesda's RPG's, the companions are a joke, and you're better off just going it alone. Like I said in the pro's, upgrading and modifying your equipment is a nice touch, but actually pulling it off is the most tedious thing in the game. You'll spend half the game looking at broken selves, lockers and desks looking for items like duct tape and glass. Because a lot of the items you need to upgrade your equipment are heavy, every 10 minutes you'll be fast traveling to your settlement to unload all this junk. You'll constantly be plagued with "You're carrying too much to run" notice, making it you have to reorganize your inventory every 5 minutes. The crippled limbs system is still in place and is as infuriating as ever. All of these issues would be tolerable if it wasn't for the game-killing crashes. As I write this I am currently stuck in a building where it crashes if I try to get to the top, but also crashes when I try to descend and leave the building, making it so I have to load an old save. Seriously Bethesda? This game has been out for almost a year now, these kind of issues shouldn't exist.

I vented about the con's a little more than I meant to, but overall I think this game is more good than bad. I just hope in future versions of the game that Bethesda will fix these issues instead of patting themselves on the back because of these ass-kissing critics.

Bethesda killed the immersion of a well-written dialogue system, which kept me so engaged and immersed for literally thousands of hours in previous FO games.. Story is such **** that I turned off my xbox one 44 hours in and haven't been back.
They also lost the 50's apocalyptic feel of previous titles. They took my beloved series and crammed so much mass appeal into it that I fear the franchise is just going to be game after game of similar b******t, churned out COD fashion every couple years.
I will not spend money on DLC. The game has little replay value, unless you really love pointless, shallow grinds with unending slaps in the face every time you have to dialogue with NPC's.

After everything that made Skyrim, and previous FO's great, I have lost my faith in Bethesda with this offering. I am not even angry...just overwhelmingly sad.

For example I've been playing shooters in which your character really has fast reaction times. With Fallout 4 it feels like your character's reflexes are moving slowly like he's underwater. It just doesn't feel responsive and quick. The shooting action and movement seems lethargic. I realized early on that I wasn't going to like this game when I shot a raider four times in the chest at point blank range with a 10MM pistol. And he wouldn't go down. Your enemies are always stronger than you and they are bullet cushions. Ammunition is always in short supply because only head shots will bring them down. So you'll spend a great deal of your time just looking for ammo. Also, what passes for a weapons wheel isn't a wheel at all. You're instructed to pick up a laser cannon to defend the museum but it doesn't show up on the weapon selection when you do. A weapon selection wheel is supposed to show all of your inventory. Every other modern game has a detailed weapon wheel. But not Fallout 4. And every other modern game on Xbox One has the "B" button designated as "crouch." Not Fallout 4. As such the controls are unfamiliar and clunky. The controls and menus differ so far from other games as to be alien. I can usually go from one developer's games to another and have familiar or same control functions. Just bringing up menus with Fallout 4 is clunky. Expand

The dungeon crawling loot-a-thon aspect of Fallout 3 and Skyrim is here and is pretty fantastic. It's the gameplay that's compelling here, over the story. It's the opposite for New Vegas, and I can understand being disappointed with that, but its just not this type of game.
Some things are just downright broken, though. The abundance of overpriced dlc, emphasis on broken-ass settlement building, quests being unfinishable due to bugs... Yeah.
It's still a fun game that I'd reccomend to people. I've put 5 days of gameplay into this game across two save files and I have no intention of stopping playing it any time soon.

The game also rewards characters for changing apparel and interacting with npc's so the net effect is that of a super hero with an alter ego persona. Fallout 4 does a poor job of this despite its improvement in some areas and the addition of some interesting game mechanics that ultimately prove to be shallow.

You will enjoy the game immensely starting off, but a combination of a nonsensical story, realizing that neither your actions or dialogue matter (ending boils down to which faction your side with), and that all the new game mechanics prove shallow (perhaps this is why they are relying on mods for consoles?) will start to sour your experience over time. There are many positives to the game, and if someone had never experienced Fallout before, this would probably still be an enjoyable game. To many fans however, it will start to feel like a disappointment when you peak behind the veil.

It does however redeem itself with innovative new mechanics that redefine how Fallout makes you feel and think while you sink dozens or hundreds of hours into the Wasteland. In short, while it's not perfect it does make for an enjoyable play through for all but the most overzealous fanboys.

    Quickly let's review what worked:

    1. The base building mechanic, while rough compared to other similar mechanics in modern games, is an enjoyable pastime and a needed break from the monotony of wandering the Wasteland.

    2. The map is expansive, while still keeping major cities close enough together to run between them if the player chooses.

    3. The enemies prove to be just as classic as in Fallout 3, with some new twists to keep them more challenging for casual gamers.

    4. The V.A.T.S. system is still wonderful and fun to use.

    5. The power armor and upgrades is a welcome and cool addition to the armor scheme.

    and what didn't work:

    1. The voice acting for every storyline character is flat and uninspired. It is painfully obvious that the voice actors weren't engaged in the story lines and were simply reading from a script that desperately needed some personality.

    2. The main storyline is routine for a Bethesda game (someone takes a loved one and I must find them etc.) and leaves a lot to be desired. The player should want to complete the main story arc, but most will skip it entirely until completely necessary.

    3. Bugs, bugs, and more bugs. Ranging from small annoyances like broken NPC bodies, to game breaking ones where quest givers are missing and players fall through the ground. This iteration of Fallout marks Bethesda yet again as the king of buggy RPGs.

    4. The graphics seem to be only a small step up from the Fallout 3 engine. On new systems and with a six year gap between games, people expect the art to evolve not stagnate. Unfortunately this is becoming a trend with Bethesda releases (see Skyrim, ESO, etc.) and it doesn't keep graphics nuts appeased.

While Fallout 4 is a fun play and the base building is a welcomed addition, Fallout 4 leaves a lot to be desired in the area of story, voice acting, and graphics. This warrants a 7/10 from me as I did enjoy the game, but I always felt it could have been so much more.

I see a lot of malcontent revolved around the game being too similar too Skyrim, Far Cry and to some extent with Minecraft in terms of house building. Yes, the game has definitely been shaped around other game models. But in complete fairness, these game models have proven to be both successful and entertaining. I personally really enjoy the major changes done.

On a negative note however, this game is not finished. There are way too many bugs, glitches and corrupt saves files. It is imperative that a single-player based game distributed by a major company such as Bethesda should be completely functional at its release. Unfinished/Broken games kill immersion. It's really a stab to the heart to invest countless hours within a mission to then discover it was all for nothing because of a corrupted save file, AI glitching/not responding or simply the player getting stuck between two rocks. Every passionate gamer jumped on the hype train for Fallout 4 with great expectations. It's sad to see many people jump of the train due to the beta-nature of this game.

Bethesda. Get your act together. Please.

The red headed step child in the series.

With next gen consoles being just over 2 years old, you'd think games would have jump to new heights. Fallout 4 is a prime example that a sore book cover doesn't mean the story is bad. Its almost like Fallout 4 was ready for the last 2 years of the 360, and Microsoft said "hey, new console, here" and Bethesda said "keep the meat, strip the skin, and put better looking skin on". Shame, but that's what I gathered

Performance: This is where you'd think that next gen consoles would have drastic improvements, but between load times and glitches, its the exact same as it was on previous consoles. I suggest to SAVE OFTEN. I experienced a game altering glitch that frustrated me to no end. But a simple load of an older save was all I needed to fix the issue. However the loss of 7 hours was very frustrating. But as we all have come to know, Bethesda has performance issues with these type of open world games. Just something fans have come to except I guess.

Graphics: The graphics in this game is a breath of fresh air. Com-paired to the hazy green overlay that was present in Fallout 3 and goldish overlay in Fallout New Vegas, this game proves that graphical advances happen in 7 years. But that's where the credit stops. Sort of. The character models are a huge improvement, and the draw distance has vastly improved, with all the standard colors on a color pallet. But up close you will notice some texture problems and tears, but nothing to damaging to the game. All in all the graphics are an improvement, nothing that's on the level of Dice or Crytecs most recent games.

Story: With almost 100 hours logged in the game, the first thing that I noticed is that I'm not picking up a HUGE variety of quest ( like Skyrim or Fallout 3 which felt overwhelming ). Main story, and only a handful of side quest is all ive managed to have in my quest log. It doesn't underwhelm and overwhelm me, but when I cant advance in the story because I want a certain perk or anything of that nature, I only had a select few to pick from to keep me busy leveling up. But as far as the story goes, I am personally enjoying it, but felt some was a bit cliche, as I was able to call out certain plot twists very early in the game.

Sound/Music/Voice: This is just standard Bethesda. Music always a pleasure to have and with a bit more variety than that of Fallout 3. The sounds are crisp and clear. Best moment to enjoy is wandering around the wasteland with your surround sound cranked up, and in the distance you hear a firefight happening. Voice is a huge improvement in this game. The characters sound like they actually have human emotion and not robots. All in all, EXCELLENT. Bottom line.

Replay-ability?: Absolutely. I have only scratched the surface of this game, with just under 100 hours, I'm sure I can squeeze hundreds of more out of it.

To clarify, the tutorial exists but isn't very helpful and leaves out a TON of important information, making useless to anyone who has played any Xbox One game ever.

The glitches and bugs are blatant and annoying, but thankfully few and far between. Unless you're very unlucky. The primary glitches occur in the settlements, being unable to assign people to placed food sources and being unable to attach the occasional wall. I haven't run across a game-breaking glitch that wasn't bypassable though, and I've put over 100 hours into this game.

    Pros:
-The game will last you a long time if you are the type of person who likes to explore, there's a lot to see and do in the game
-There are a variety of different companions in this game most have intriguing back-stories and offer different perks if you either romance them or get them to the highest level of friendship.
-The Radio now features more songs than ever
-The new power armour system is fantastic
-No level cap means lots of gameplay and certain enemies level with you making it a bit challenging
    -Hardcore mode is pretty awesome
-Changing weather and radiation storms are pretty sweet to see come to console.
-Settlement building can be fun at times
    -Can romance multiple people
-Game has a ton of new mechanics such as cooking, chem crafting, the ability to modify power armour etc.
-Voiced protagonist is actually not bad and is kind of nice to hear seeing as Bioware did a similar type of thing with Mass Effect and it worked well for them, it certainly doesn't fail in this situation.

    Cons:
-Radio station has every song in fallout 3 so saying they have more is kind of a lie, they have the same amount of "new" songs that every game before it had
-Not really any new enemies aside from maybe one or two
-"Legendary" enemies feel a bit cheap and after a while the legendary stuff is not worth picking up
-Companions like and dislike system can grow annoying with certain companions disliking when you improve settlements or get in power armour
-The graphics aren't anything to brag about
-The inventory system in fallout 3 worked better and didn't take forever to find holotapes and notes
-The voiced protagonist is a nice change up but most the time the dialog options result in the same exact thing, even being rude to people doesn't seem to make much of a difference
-Trying to repair settlements costs you either a ton of caps for shipments or your carry weight, you'll spend a lot of time trying to scrap things to lighten the load you're carrying and even then theyre not weightless
-Removing the Karma system isn't better than improving it
-story is short and rather linear, it can be completed in probably 10 hours if you so desire
-One of the factions is essential and no matter which of the endings you choose
    -Kinda buggy at times.

All in all the game I would rate about a 7.5, it is fun and compelling and with three days of gameplay I have yet to accomplish everything. The world is massive and expands on the lore, it's fun to play and Bethesda are still talking about releasing mods for it for free. There is a lot to see and do but the game suffers in the story department, the graphic department, the music department and many other departments. Fans of New Vegas probably will be satisfied but want more, fans of fallout 3 and Skyrim will probably find the game to be great. it really depends on the player and playstyle.

There's no other game I play where I look at the clock, play for a while, look again and 3 hours have passed. It grabs hold and doesn't let go like a good RPG should. Obviously, your mileage may vary and it helps if you enjoy first person shooters on their own merits as well. My game of the year for 2015, which I never expected since I enjoyed the hell out of MGS5 and Bloodborne. The sheer amount of fun to be had here is staggering, if you're on the fence don't listen to the haters.

Still on THE GOOD: The power armor in the game is the best of the other Fall outs. Its a robotic suit instead of just armor you put on.
The combat is awesome, it's a lot smoother and more fun.
The locations are awesome like the glowing sea, where the nuclear bomb stuck the commonwealth. It is a great location because it feels like your actually there in the sea (not really a sea). Its cool that you need radiation gear to survive. Other locations look cool like the super mutant bases.
The side quests are really good also, you never know what you'll encounter. I don't dislike a single quest in the game.
The new level system is really awesome since you can level up indefinitely. There ain't no skills but I am satisfied by all the perks. I'm a level 70 and there are still plenty of skills to get.
The graphics look awesome to me.

THE BAD: The only thing I wish was better about Fallout 4 is that I wish they added more side quests. There are plenty of quests to do but I felt like there should've being more.
BUGS: This game has froze more than any other game I played on Xbox 1. Though that ain't that many. I have run into my pip boy getting stuck(happened once). I have got stuck a few times, though that's easy to fix because you can just fast travel to get out.

Over all Fall out 4 has kept me very interested for 200+ hours. It is my most favorite game. I gave it a 10 because everything they did with it was really good.

THE BEST: Amazing characters including your protagonist, main quests are good and keep you interested, extremely fun to build and explore.

This version of Fallout, is more cartoony and less realistic and dark. The dialogue system has been nerfed, but the combat system has improved. The story missions are not as fun as the previous fallouts, but the world feels much more full and alive. It will definitely surprise you as a fallout game, for some this change is needed but for others it seems to strange. For me fallout 4 gets a 7/10.

Wandering around, seeing something cool in the distance, going there, killing all the bad guys, grabbing the loot, seeing something else in the distance, going there, repeat. It's all back in Fallout 4.

That being said though, they have taken quite a few steps back with this game. Yes, the RPG system has been simplified. There are no skills anymore, weapon and armor don't degrade, there is no karma system, and the perks system has been reworked. The skills and reworked perks system, I can live with. The other two, not so much. I imagine they did it to streamline the series and appeal to a wider audience. The lack of a karma system means that the only meaningful choices you get to make are what factions to join, which leaves little room for any real role-playing. The story and setting this time around also don't have the appeal of Fallout 3. With a few exceptions, characters are flat and uninteresting, and this isn't helped by the lack of interesting player dialogue choices. Boston also doesn't have the uniqueness that Washington DC had. The usual Bethesda bugs are still in abundance. NPC followers can get snagged on objects, static cars can unexpectedly go flying and crush you, bad VATS cameras will glitch through enemies, and so on. The UI is also a bit of a mess. The pipboy menus in general are cluttered and confusing, and certain key binds are hard bound to actions. You can also build settlements now. It's a cool idea, but poorly explained and implemented. 30 hours in, I still don't know what ultimate purpose they serve or how it benefits me.

Onto the positives. The world looks great. The art style in general is more colorful and vibrant than Fallout 3's, helped by a much improved graphics engine. Art quality is hit or miss though. Some areas look great while others look laughably bad. Character models and animations have been improved. 3rd person view in particular feels much better because of this. Character creation is also very robust, with tons of face customization options. The gun gameplay and general player navigation is also improved, and feels more in line with what you'd expect from a modern FPS. It can still be quite janky, especially when jumping or trying to navigate rocky terrain. You can also craft weapons and armor now, which is great. That also means every little clutter item in the world should be picked up, as they are used for crafting.

So in conclusion, if you loved Fallout 3 for it's setting and and exploration gameplay, Fallout 4 will give you more of that but with a bit of next-gen polish. If you wanted a deep RPG experience, then the streamlining that Bethesda has done may disappoint you. Though not the classic that it's predecessor was, Fallout 4 is still a good game and a worthy addition to the Fallout series.

The Story is, as per usual with a bethesda game average however this is a blemish on an otherwise wonderfull rich universe drowned in enviromental story telling. The gameplay is incredibly satisying and addictive only being reinforced by the games new settlement system, an addition that I completely ignored until I was ready but oh my it is damn good fun, yes it is unaccomadating for people who like to have their hand held but I personally enjoyed the challenge of constructing and managing my own communities throughout the world as this more than anything made the game feel real! As for the combat it is a delight, iron sights are now here,( not regarding new vegas of course)and honestly the way guns feel and sound and perform on screen is mnumentally improved over recent games. The gunplay can't hold a candle to Battlefield or Destiny but for an RPG it has the most solid combat mechanics I have ever played. A much appreciated cover leaning system has been implemented and works smoothly with most in game objects. Weapon degradation is gone which is a blessing in disguise as carrying 15 plasma rifles in fallout 3 just for repairs was annoying and unneeded and only served to limit the player. Hardcore mode is sadly not here and that is my main gripe with the game as this is lazy and just stupid not to include it too be honest, it feels like a dig at obsidian for impementing a feature that was interesting that they didn't like. I won't talk long about the graphics as a game should be rated on how fun it is, its quality and its content not how sharp the textures look. That said the game puts fallout games of the past to shame with truly inspired lighting and hella nice art design. Bostons achitecture is incredible and I refuse to complain about the aesthetic quality of the places you visit. E.g the glowing sea is INCREDIBLE. As for the interface it can be time consuming and archaic at times but I woudn't replace the pip boy for the world as it screams Fallout. Now for the big one, character development is more focused and specialised than ever before. I literaly spent hours considering what to put my perk points into and it felt good! Skills are gone and good riddance. Special now makes a difference instead of just determining what your skill levels are. Character creation is unbelievable too say the least. Fans of the series can go too ways with this one. They will feel bitter resentment because the game just isnt good enough to satisfy the wait. OR they will become lost in another top notch game from Bethesda game studios. Bad points below.

    Survival difficulty is disapointing
Conversation system leaves alot to be desired
It hard crashed twice on me in 100 hours. Haha
Lockpicking and hacking are the same. Very boring. Just serve as level gates.
Other technical issues. E.g. characters being stuck on roofs. Frame rate drops usual unoticable stuff.
Fast travel sort of wrecks game balance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my second review of F4, after 287 hours and completing all faction endings.

My original score of 9/10 was far too generous. Although this game does have many good things to say about it, it suffers heavily from critical flaws that bring it down from the masterpiece it might have been with a better story and much more fulfilling endings.

After completing all endings and main mission quests, my conclusion is that F4's story and ending(s) in particular are some of the most disappointing in gaming. Along with the terribly flat ending to Fallout 3, I'm pretty convinced that Bethesda simply cannot stick the landing when it comes to Fallout universe endings.

The game begins the day the world ended by atomic annihilation. Frankly, it should have started before that. The player is either the mother or father of an infant son named Shaun, but both Shaun and the other parent are woefully underutilized and one-dimensional. They're not even one-dimensional, since you only experience this setting for all of 10 minutes before you emerge from Vault 111. Your wife/husband has been murdered and your son kidnapped. Of course, because we've known these characters for all of 12 minutes, none of this provides much in the way of motivation.

And so out you go, exploring the remnants of the pre-war world and, occasionally, looking for your lost son. Or not. Many people have already covered this, but the sense of urgency your character SHOULD feel in his circumstances is lost immediately. You end up coming into contact with the four major factions in the Commonwealth: the Minutemen, the Railroad, the Institute, and the Brotherhood of Steel.

Eventually, you join one of these factions, and make it into the Institute to find that your missing son, Shaun, is the leader of the shadowy group. This plot twist is poorly executed and filled with holes. There is a lot of deliberate misdirection on the part of the writers, and they don't earn the surprise that this revelation is supposed to be.

And then you pick one faction and see the story through to the end. And although there are four factions, there are only TWO endings. One, you join the Institute, become it's leader, destroy the Railroad and Brotherhood, and Shaun dies. In the other, no matter what non-Institute faction you choose, you destroy the Institute and Shaun dies. That's it. There's no diplomatic solution, no alliances to be made, just the mass-murder of one or more opposing factions. And in all of these questlines, your character is given precisely ZERO agency! There is always an NPC there to tell you what to do, how to do it, and who to do it with. Even the Institute, which selects you as it's leader, then has Father/Shaun tell you what to do!!! At no point is the player given options on, say, how to destroy the Brotherhood of Steel and cripple the Prydwen. So many opportunities were missed by forcing the player to do exactly what the writers wanted them to do...

And the icing on top of this disappointing cake is the closing cinematic, which in Fallout games past have served as an epilogue of sorts, explaining how the choices you made affected the people, groups, and world you just spend many hours interacting with. In Fallout 4? It's the same boring monologue from the player character, no matter which faction you chose or what decisions you made during your playthrough. And on top of the fact that it's the same dialogue no matter what ending, it's the dialogue we heard in THE RELEASE TRAILER!!! Meaning if you paid any attention to this game before playing it, you've already heard the ending dialogue before you even fire it up!

There is no other explanation for this than laziness on the part of Bethesda. They spent 7 years making this game, and although many parts of it are fantastic, they simply continue to show that their writing staff cannot construct a compelling story with a satisfactory ending. In the Elder Scrolls universe, maybe...but not in the Fallout universe.

If you read my earlier review in which I gave the game a 9/10, I defended the game against many of its critics. Now, I sort of see where they were coming from. A game with a fantastic story can overcome many of its failings, but having now finished the game in every way possible...well, it's a letdown. It deserves high marks for its game world (which is vast, full of locations to explore, and oozes atmosphere) and improved shooting mechanic. But this game SHOULD rank as one of 2015's most disappointing games because we've seen what Bethesda is capable of in a masterpiece like Skyrim. This game had all the indications of being able to meet that benchmark prior to its release, but having now explored it for nearly 300 hours, I can safely say that the entire game, as a whole, let me down.

If you play a game for its story avoid Fallout 4 like the plague, but if you love to explore and love to simply roll around in toxic waste at every opportunity then this game is for you. Expand

This game is nothing less of amazing. The graphics are incredible. The story and Quests are great and really make you feel like your in the actual game. I personally love being able to customize my characters faces and bodies and I fully impressed. I recommend this game to everyone who loves RPG games.

This is literally the best game I have ever played.
    Beginning thoughts:

I've spent the past two days alone in my room with my controller in hand playing the crap out of this game, and I'm still only in the beginning of the story! There is so much to look at, to discover, to explore, in this beautiful open world experience. There is a new event around every corner that will distract you from the mission you're trying to accomplish. For example, in one mission, I have to clear our a military base of ghouls. When I enter the building, I find this brotherhood of steel chick, dead in the corner with a holo tape recording of her mission. A new quest pops up: investigate her objective. Now I have to decide to carry out my mission or give in to curiosity.
This 'choice' is what really makes this game work for me. I hate when games are linear, I like thinking for myself. Fallout has always been great at giving us free will instead of a 'kill everything you see and follow the objective.' If you like intellectual game play rather than robotic, you will love this game.

    Overview
    Game play:
Deep. Immersive. Shooting is finally enjoyable in fallout. Almost every aspect of the game-play is great.
    Story:
Slow start, but it picks up after a while. It's a really deep and emotional experience.
    Graphics:
If you don't like F4's graphics, you need glasses. They look great, a 400% improvement from previous fallout games. I call it 'Cartoon Realism,' and it's a great style for the fallout mood. I really appreciate that they showed the real game in the trailers instead of an HD parody. I love the graphics, and I prefer them to many of the super graphics that other games are advertising.
    Score:
*Clap clap clap* The memories. Great soundtrack.
    Voice acting:
Great acting, but the voice doesn't always match up with the video. For the voice acted protagonist, I absolutely adore having a voice for one. It makes me feel like a part of the world rather than a perception of it.
    Bugs:
There are bugs, but it's much more polished than fallout 3. Of course such an open game, with limitless freedom, is going to have bugs.
    Overview:
The best game out there as of right now. If you don't have this game, pick it up, whether you're a fallout fan or not. It's worth every penny.

    Addressing the negative reviews:
I don't know why the reviews for this game are so harsh. My prediction is that people are just so brainwashed with linear story and superb graphics, and when they play fallout, the freedom and the change in what they're seeing scares them. It could also be that people are so used to being let down by AAA game companies, that they've been conditioned to look for the negative on everything, especially something innovative that isn't the 'Good old days.' It could also be that people are being childish, and simply hating on the game. That would explain all the 0s.
Whatever the reason may be, these reviews should be disregarded. We should save negativity for what is actually bad, not for what's great and innovative. If the majority give all games, even good ones, bad reviews, than game companies won't take our input seriously. This could also frighten them from change, and for the case of half life three, could cause games to not be made at all.
In my opinion, this is the best game of the year. Keep it up, Bethesda.

Anyways, with that said, this game is well worth the $60. gun crafting is more fun than expected, settlement building is alright, haven't really gotten into it too much, the gun play, like I already said, isn't total garbage, and you don't actually have to rely on VATS 97% of the time. The story wasn't all that great, but really, was fixing a water purifier that great? These games don't shine because of their in depth, amazing, breathtaking story line with intricate characters. It's the feeling of exploring a desolate wasteland where nearly everything is trying to kill you, and you have to do anything to survive.

The enemies are fun and you don't feel terribly overpowered when fighting them being a high level, and the addition of Legendary enemies that drop legendary loot is a welcome edition. I definitely liked scrounging around ruins and at the end find a special weapon like in 3, but getting them after killing a legendary enemy feels more rewarding.

As for perks, I like that they implemented SPECIAL and perks into one tree. The way it was done in 3 and NV, where you could put points into attributes and pick out certain perks, completely defeated the purpose of having the SPECIAL in there, since you could be a 1 charisma character with 100 speech.

As for the graphics, yeah, the game isn't exactly pretty, and it most certainly doesn't look like a next gen game, but fun gameplay will always triumph over graphics for me personally.

Overall, I don't regret buying this game, and I find it extremely fun.

So far all the reviews seem a bit picky. This is better than Witcher 3, less glitchey and buggy, although centering on and selecting items is a bit wonky.

The plot is surprisingly deep. There is a definite sense of loneliness in the wasteland. And it really doesn't look like Fallout 3. This is more of suburbia turned wasteland. Fallout 3 was just pure open-space wasteland, like 'The Road'. You explore empty houses and gas stations.

I think most of the people are upset because the game is too complex for them. Todd Howard was right when he said "We are probably doing too much with this game."
The leveling system makes perfect sense, I actually enjoy it more then the previous system. You really have to think about where to put your points and it takes a long time to level up as well.

The atmosphere is unlike anything else, great graphics, awesome missions, so much fun to explore.
If everyone wants to make comparisons I'll leave some as well.

Fallout 4 is much more atmospheric then the Witcher 3. Yes the Witcher did contain more dialogue but literally the rewards were terribly weak. I played the witcher, discovered every location...none as interesting as anything in Fallout 4.
Every building design and mission structure set up in Fallout is multi tiered in a much better way then the witcher. The rewards feel great also, the combat in witcher sucked, all you had was a couple decent spells and the same 2 swords to swing over and over again.
Fallouts combat takes thought and skill, you always risk running out of ammo and action points, there are a variety of several ways to attack and sneak through buildings. You can hack turrets, control robots, rig up booby traps, go stealth, beat someone to death with a rolling pin, you have lazer pistols that set people on fire, even baseball grenandes.....you can even sneak up on someone and put a live grenade in their back pocket.
Talk about stale NPC's did anybody else get tired if seeing the same cut and paste villagers and salesmen at every town in the Witcher. Seriously the bowl cut NPC was everywhere as was the herbalist.

Same **** with Metal Gear, great game but repetitive and boring.

No idea how fallout has so much hate, people really need to play the game, it is absolutely phenomenal.

No way to filter my items if I have too many just to view specific type o weapons for example. When I ask companion to give me everything, he or she even gives equipped items. So, this game is actually really quite a fantastic game on it's own merit. It has a complex and rewarding crafting system, the shooting is miles better than in previous games, it's got unique and interesting stories, and some of the best writing I've seen in a Bethesda game for a long time. Yes, I do actually care about some of the characters and I want to find my son already!
I would advise to leave the internet alone until you've finished everything you want to finish. There are HUGE spoilers just randomly placed about on wiki's (avoid anything to do with companions, trust me).

    So the good points summed up;
    1. The story is fantastic, and I've never cared so much about a Bethesda game, the characters are all we written and complex. I'd like to extend this to say the atmosphere can genuinely be very spooky and scary from time to time.
    2. The gunplay is so much more responsive and satisfying.
    3. The addition of new legendary enemies adds a lot of variation to things, I hope they take it a step further in the future and go an almost Diablo route with it (tons of variations of the same enemies)
    4. The crafting system (especially on weapons and armour) makes for some seriously awesome customisablity, if you want to sneak around taking people out silently, that's entirely viable!
    5. They really throw you to some unexpected positions as you go throughout the game, and this really allows you to see a whole other side of the Fallout universe and experience thing we've never seen before.

    That being said, there are also a few set backs here;
    1. The whole world seems kind of empty at the start, there's not that many random/interesting stories in the north of the wasteland, but this is rectified a little when you head south
    2. The new speech system isn't awful, but I still quicksave before I choose any option with the likelihood being that I'm about to make a character feel stupid for trying to feign interest in their plans.
    3. The crafting system, oh how I love it, but it's ever so difficult to correctly place items, you'll be over encumbered constantly for wanting to collect things to scrap, and the NPCs cannot navigate your new, custom-made terrain, and that's infuriating.
    4. Often times the story only seems to move when I most (although that certainly isn't always the case).
    5. Many of my decisions don't seem to be of any impact, maybe I'll save someone somewhere in the wasteland for them to run off never to be seen again. Maybe I'll convince someone to give up the drugs, maybe I'll create an entire new city for people to visit. Maybe I'll activate a 200 year old sentry bot only to have it sit around and do nothing. None of the side quests have any real impact on the rest of the wasteland, which is slightly disappointing.

Overall, I have loved (and will continue to love) my time with this game, I can't get enough of it, but there's a few little bug bears that I think Bethesda just didn't really use common sense with when designing

P.S. I would say that the bugs are awful, but I can only base this on my own experience. So far, after 24 hours, I have only had my gun disappear (twice), has to wait a little while to open a door (once) and on occasion I can see through the ceiling.

The game play is more of what I have loved from both Skyrim and Fallout 3. Secrets everywhere and the feeling that you have no idea what you might run into at any moment keep me glued to the screen for hours on end. Their new loot system that gives use to nearly every item further drives this desire to explore.

I did not expect to be the biggest fan of their new settlement/construction system, but it is incredibly entertaining! To see what happens when raiders try to charge your base surrounded by rocket turrets is worth the time invested! Also, the ability to designate exactly what gear your settlers and companions wear is a big plus as well.

The Commonwealth is much different than the Capital Wasteland, The MojavePeople are saying that this game wasn't anything close to what they wanted, but I say that it's the best Fallout title that this generation will probably see for at least the next 15 years(hopefully, because Bethesda should take their sweet time when making their games), and the best Fallout entry since Fallout 2. The Commonwealth is much different than the Capital Wasteland, The Mojave Desert, and The West Coast. It's more developed and populated then any other setting in the Fallout Universe, but that doesn't mean that the game is easier. Like when anything else is exposed to the effects of time, the commonwealth has evolved to become the deadliest environment in any fallout game released. The best thing about the game, so far, is how challenging it is. When I had the option to set my difficulty I went to survival mode, because usually bethesda's games aren't too difficult. But Fallout 4 has proven to be a welcome challenge where everything can and will kill you in a few seconds, if you don't plan right. Strategy has become a vital tool when clearing a "dungeon", where as in fallout 3 I would just run around and shoot everything in the frontal lobe. The crafting system is fun to, but it's easy to acquire too many settlements to manage at once, without making it a full time job.

However, The only few cons that come with this game are the bugs and the storyline, which is so uninteresting, I haven't even gotten past the 5th main quest quest. The only game breaking bugs that I have encountered, I am playing on the Xbox One, have been where a companion would walk into a wall, fly up into the air, and I got a message saying that they headed back to red rocket gas station.

But still. I love the game, I think it's the best fallout that I've ever played, It certainly lived up to my expectations, and I plan on fully completing the game.

The amount of content available is really quite incredible. The side quests are what most people gravitate to in these types of games, and its crucial to make them fun, and for the most part they are. Some quests are repetitive, (especially the ones at Sanctuary), but otherwise they feature fun characters and interesting diversions. The issue I have is that the main story isn't all that interesting. While some of the twists were impressive, I left the game not feeling the same attachment to characters that I did in Fallout 3. The ending was pretty anti-climatic as well, (although I guess that also applies to Fallout 3).

The mechanics are improved quite a bit and the improved map system and opening items system really made this game a lot more accessible than Fallout 3. Still, the characters weren't as memorable, main story not as interesting and locations not as iconic. Fallout 4 is a fun game for sure, but isn't one I fervently return to.

As a game, its great. As a Fallout game, severely disappointing. All RPG elements that were brought forth from Obsidian were tossed out the window for a more action-adventure open world game. Feels more like another Borderlands game than Fallout. Please make another Fallout game, Obsidian.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wrote a review for fallout 4 around a week after it came out (15 hours in) and i mentioned a few issues but overall i enjoyed the game

Now ive finished it, i felt it better to change a few things. While this game is enjoyable at times, it becomes extremley repetitive very quickly. I was never really invested in a quest or really cared about the characters, with the exception of the Paladin Danse revelation.

The ending was a massive downpoint, theres no beating around the bush, the ending sucked. Since ive finished it ive went and seen the so called "alternative" endings and they are basically the same except with a dfferent group. The choices in the game don't matter, ive never played a Bethesda game which has such black/white choices! Most of the time the choice i wanted wasn't available.

Im glad i played Fallout 4 but overall, the game was overyhyped & very average.

I have played 15 hours and for me the game is great, in fact one of the best games this year. So the story is alright and is more of a vehicle that is just in the background and all of the characters and side quests you find are what is really interesting. The characters and dialogue system for me are very good. Some characters and dialogue choices are quite bad but most are actually quite interesting. The world is quite large and the amount of areas to loot is fantastic. Companions are very helpful in battle seems as the difficulty has been amped up. Soundtrack/Score is very good, listening to the radio and looting is so much fun. Base building is meh, could be improved but a nice addition to the game. Graphics are good, they're not realistic but more cartoony and simplistic and the game is much more bright compared to the dull brown fallout 3. Weapon customization is very good. S.P.E.C.I.A.L system is good and can improve lots of abilities that will help you in battle or looting. V.A.T.S are highly improved as instead of stopping time they slow down time and keep the intensity of the battle going. Voice acting is very good for the most part. But then there are the issues I have with the game. Mainly the bugs. Jesus **** christ the bugs are ridiculous. There are so many. Either the game doesn't load properly and it makes me re-load my game or one time I went into an elevator and was in there for 10 minutes so I had to re-load my game. My game crashed once. There are invisible walls and occasional frame drops. If there were no bugs the game would be a 9.5/10 but seems as there are bugs that for me are becoming far and few between now I will have to give the game a 8.5/10 instead. Also all the reviews that came out on release day saying the story is bad and the ending sucks, there is no way you completed the story in one day unless you rushed the game and didn't really play it properly. And to the people hating on the graphics, what about the graphics for Wolfenstein: The New Order? You didn't complain then did you. Anyway Fallout 4 is fantastic and deserves all the critic praise. Just fix the **** bugs bethesda. Expand

I'd give it an 8.5 if I could, but a 9 is too high, so 8 it is for the time being. I will start with the good, and end with the bad.**

First off, the folks on here giving the game a straight zero are ridiculous. I created a metacritic account just to give the game a fair review, as I don't feel that all of the negative reviews have played the same game that I have played.

As a long time fan of the series, I knew what to expect from Bethesda on launch. With this particular developer, you should know not to go into one of their RPG's with the expectation that the graphics are going to be revolutionary. You should also know that they have bugs on day one. You know all of this because the game that you are getting is absolutely massive that it would be completely ridiculous to expect the game to be completely perfect. The world is gigantic, full of hundreds of different NPC's that have different dialogue for things that you say and do. Your choices actually have an affect on the outcome of the game. Kill the wrong person, and you might miss a quest. You can sink hundreds of hours into Bethesda games, including this one, yet you give it a zero for graphics and some bugs?

There are a lot of reviews here harping on the graphics. As I stated before, I didn't have a whole lot of expectations before playing, and I made it a point not to look at any videos or leaked images before release. The only thing I saw was the E3 reveal before playing the game. I gotta say... the graphics have exceeded my expectations. All of you saying that it looks like Fallout 3 are just flat out wrong. Do you remember what the Wasteland looked like? Green tint, desolate, repetitive and in my opinion boring visually. Fallout 4 has taken away the green tint and now has rich colors. The sky is a beautiful blue, there are reds, greens, and other colors that are much more visually appealing than past games. The textures of rocks, bushes, trees, and water have more detail. The lighting between trees is a nice touch, and the shadows all look pretty great too.

The gun play and combat in general is a little improved in my opinion. Guns actually feel different when shooting, and they sound different too. Melee is a little underwhelming, but it's tough for me to play a melee character in a gun game anyway, so I hardly use it.

The bad... Honestly there aren't too many things terribly wrong with the game. Is there room for improvement? Of course there is. A few things that I think could be improved are the character animations at times. Sometimes their mouths and the audio aren't synced very well, and their mouths move kind of weird at times. I also still don't know how I feel about the new dialogue interactions. I loved the old way of reading what you were going to say. The voice acting is definitely a great touch, but I'd much rather see what they're going to say other than just choose "Sarcastic" as my response.

The frame rate did drop a little bit here and there during cut scenes, but that's literally the only time I have seen it. Other than that, the game has been beautiful and has run very smoothly for me. I haven't run into any bugs that are game breaking at all. One thing I can say is that the autosave isn't as often as I would like, so I use quicksave/save manually. Not that big of a deal really.

All in all... I personally love the game in the 5 hours that I have spent in it. I haven't really stayed on the main quest path, instead I chose to explore and do side quests as they come up. I don't think a lot of the user reviews I have read today have been very fair, and question if half of the negative reviewers have even played the game at all.

If you are a fan of Fallout, or maybe haven't ever played Fallout before, I suggest purchasing this game. The Holidays are just around the corner, so that means deals will be a-plenty. So if you want to wait, go ahead. But if you are on the fence and need the push to buy it... here it is.

    - Gun mechanics are vastly improved

    Cons:
    - Bethesda seems to have completely ignored advancements made by Obsidian in New Vegas
    - Voiced protagonist gets old and limits the ability for you to truly become YOUR character
    - Dialog options are absurdly simple to the point where you have no clue what you'll say (really blows. REALLY)
    - Clothing/armor system could have been better. Why the hell can't I wear a tuxedo under my armor pieces?
    - Bad character writing and development
    - Awkward cutscenes that are meant to be dramatic, but end up being... awkward

Being a longtime fan of Bethesda's work and the Fallout series, this is not exactly what I wanted from Fallout 4. That being said, 24 hours into the game I find myself wanting to keep playing and exploring, and having fun while doing it. Thats the sign of a good game for me. 8/10

Fallout 4 has far exceeded my expectations and is a massive jump forward from previous titles in the series. After 20+ hours exploring, doing quests, scavenging and settlement building I can safely say this is one of the best games I've ever played.

I've experienced only a few minor bugs but nothing that takes away from my experience. If you want a great, immersive RPG/shooter this is it.

I have only played the game for a day mind you, so I can't dive all the way into the story, but it does seem like a pretty lame cliche father trying to find his son, finding nemo type of storyline, which is pretty played out. Would have liked to see something more creative.

As far as the gameplay goes, and how fun the game is, because that is what really matters, the game is pretty fun, and should provide many hours of entertainment. To me, it is just another fallout. It hasn't taken a huge step from Fallout 3, or New Vegas, which is disappointing to many. That is this games biggest problem. It isn't anything new. Yes, there are some cool new customization and what not, but it's just sort of the same thing as the predecessors. If you really loved the previous games, and are itching to get back into it with a new story, this is a good, fun game. Hopefully the story gets a lot juicer. It starts out pretty bland.

The graphics aren't great, personally not a big deal, but having The Last of Us tier graphics would have helped big time. The engine is outdated, and barely keeps up with all the depth that is thrown into the world. I experience very noticeable frame drops. Those are the 2 things holding this game back from being a 10. A more creative story, and a better engine(a huge change and complete overhaul would be needed) could've made this game as good as we thought. Not the case, but trust me, it is still a good fun game, and I would recommend it.

However, fans that were expecting a RPG in the true sense may be disappointed. It often feels more like a survival horror than a game in which you choose the story whose outcome is the sum of your actions. This does make the game often feel hollow, especially as each conversation has four 'options' that are in reality simply different ways of saying the same thing.

For me, it's a great game but misses out on it's true potential as an open-world story-creating masterpiece.

As a kid I used to play Morrowind on the PC, Watching your modding community flourish around the Construction Set was beautiful. The game itself didn't need character narration; the game was smooth, the characters were well thought out (Vivec, Dagoth Ur still bring a smile to my minds eye), There was a massive depth to your plot back then it seemed. I could depend on dropping into this RPG for hours at a time; if even just to play around with different cheats or spells for sillies. ( or even better mods from the community)
With Fallout 4 . . . on Survival. . . I hope you realize your engine's bugs crash the game every 30m - 2 hrs consistently right? yet the game of the year edition came out and i see no updates fixing these issues. . . seemingly you want everyone seeing a loading screen (laments; fast traveling in lower difficulty with a smaller loot tree)
every 30 min or the game will crash due to zone renderings, or any # of other immersion breaking issues.
( i have had cars thrown into me by companions instantly killing me, even discovered running into said cars sitting still can be fatal. . .)
I am sure every player has noticed falling cars from highways and other needless animations that bug up the engine, when all we did was max-craft our character to run fast through the zones (because minutemen) and here we are, un-immersed, probably broke due to the expansions/skins, and nothing to really show for it except our Bethesda Fandom. . . & all the aforementioned hours spent in a broken game you refuse to spend any time(or $) fixing . . . despite how much money we have literally just thrown at you.
I can't even fathom how much you probably make off these ripoff's you call creations in your club but it is downright despicable how you went from a Construction Set to a Creation Club. . .
& you think your better than EA. . . Tsk, tsk.

Watching the hype following your latest presentation at E3 I am feeling all sorts of deja vu when compared to f4's hype.
I am not enthused, I am not excited.
I am mildly disgusted and sad to see a great company brought so low by it's shareholder greed.

Until you start acting more like Cd Projekt Red
