After several hours of grinding, I was slightly disappointed with what the game had offered. The game is not necessarily bad, but one that presents glaring flaws that took away from my overall enjoyment. Destiny is a good game, but it is nothing compared to the breathtaking adventure that was Halo. Firstly, the story quickly becomes underwhelming after its seemingly promising concept and premise, missions feels highly repetitive to the point where it becomes a bore, and content wise the game doesn't offer much for you to have the full experience (unless you want to pay extra for the DLC expansions). On a positive note though, the graphics and soundtrack are superb, gameplay mechanics work very well for a first-person shooter, and the landscapes and scenery are downright gorgeous. Unfortunately, you'll soon find out that the world is a facade, as it soon feels lifeless and mundane. In conclusion, Destiny is a good title that you are likely to enjoy if you wish to experience it, but don't expect to be blown away the same way you were with the Halo franchise. Expand

    - half assed story - these are the people who developed the Halo universe, which is pretty rich. But apparently they invested no more than a total of $10 into a decent story. Any teenager with a laptop can do better than this - they didn't even try. No answers or info is really given in the game, and 99% of the background info is not in-game but in the 'grimoire cards' on their website. WTF? Imagine if Mass Effect had had zero info on the Turians, Asari, Hanar, or any other species and just had a generic enemy called the 'Darkness'. That would be Destiny's story.
    - sucky endgame. After beating the story, what is there to do? The same 5 or 6 strikes over and over and over and over, and over and over again? Talk about boring. Then there are these big, bad 'raids'. Sounds cool right? Finally can play with a part of more than 3 people (seriously, Borderlands managed 4 person teams last gen for god's sake). But wait! No matchmaking! So if you do not have 6 friends with this game on at the same time, there's no playing the raids - which makes them entirely useless.
    - unbalanced multiplayer. Wow is the multiplayer disappointing. None of the maps really seem all that different from each other. Guardian abilities badly unbalance the gameplay and vehicles have no counter measures (unlike in Halo). As soon as Halo MCC hits in November, no way I'd ever consider going back to Destiny's multiplayer.

Overall, very disappointing. At least Bungie taught me a lesson - *never* buy the $100 special edition of the first game in a new franchise. I cannot believe I spent that much on a game that I got less than 10 hours of gameplay in. Ugh

On one hand, you've got interesting open worlds where you can bump into other players here and there and tackle meaningful content with small 3-player groups. The missions and boss fights are highly replayable and customizing your character to a certain play style is outstanding within the FPS genre. On the other hand, Destiny isn't built well enough to weather the gaming world. It is a flash of excitement, praise and continued consumption one moment, an abandoned war fortress the next. The worlds of Destiny are limited in their scope and the content barely exceeds skin depth. You cannot throw yourself into this game and feel both challenged and interested a month or two later, because once you've reached a level cap and played a handful of "strikes" and done your "raid", it all quickly comes to a halt. Like World of Warcraft, the game is meant to be repetitive, but what sets most MMORPGs above the cut is how meaningful the game is once you get to where you're ultimately going. The challenge to take on the game's most difficult moments and come out victorious with your friends, the champions of PvP (competitive multiplayer) showing their skills and being rewarded for it. It's these things that hurt Destiny in the long run. I absolutely love this game for its butter-smooth gunplay and feel. Nothing feels wasted or worthless (even if I don't prefer fusion rifles, they serve a purpose and have their strong-suits). Bungie is perhaps king of balance, and their creative sparks show up in spots, but you cannot deny that this is very much a Halo 2.0, or what Halo could be like if you opened up the sandbox and went to town. That would be fine if the story wasn't so muddied and incoherent most of the time. This is the first year of Destiny and, despite all of its shortcomings, is still worth the price of entry. That's the true incredible feat here, but if you're jumping in to the game late, be prepared to miss out on the end game content that was worth playing in the first year, because after two short DLC packs, year 2 is upon us with a grander Taken King expansion that is taking this game in the direction it should have always been going. I find myself having the most fun during the very few missions so far that actually forces you to group with others. But the story mode is pretty boring alone. They really REALLY need to have some kind of in game chat AND an ingame group finder for ALL missions even if it's restricted to just the town there has to be something or they might as well have made this a single player game. The thing that really irks me is this game has so much **** potential but they flubbed it where it counts.

Then you play it. Credit where credit's due, the gun play is pretty good but the game is aggressively boring with as many short cuts taken as possible.

Destiny is desperate to be an MMO, with a single social hub and market along with several planets, each with one location you'll grind across multiple times through what passes for story. Very little is explained beyond 'darkness is coming and you must shoot the dudes who make up the darkness, we think' unless you feel like reading the glossary, but the game did such a bad job of engaging me I couldn't be bothered. Dinklage seemingly doesn't care either and the fact his character, a little robot called a 'ghost' that somehow resurrected your character thousands of years after he/she/it died but can't help you if you're in a shaded tunnel, gets worked up about potentially finding something brilliant on Earth before dropping the whole plot line and forcing you to go to the next planet without a reason, likely as I wasn't high enough level for the 'explosive conclusion', if that's what's left of Bungie under Activision's control thinks sending in waves of generic enemies is, makes me wonder if they have any idea how stories are supposed to progress

I always felt City of Heroes spoilt me for MMO story telling and general awesomeness, but Destiny is poor by both MMO's current standards and shooter standards as the MMO troupes it has to have wear what's good about Destiny down. The PvP combat could be fine, mind, but I had no urge to try it as the rest of the game just bored me. Do yourselves a favour and either play Wolfenstien: The New Order instead

By the time you reach level 20 (or level 29, which is where I found myself as I went to trade in the title while it was still worth $30), you've already seen everything in the game, more than once, with the exception of a single 'raid', the Vault of Glass. You only get rewarded for running the raid once a week, leaving there nothing to do in a PvE sense that has not already been seen and experienced dozens of times.

The PvP is serviceable, but runs into some pronounced balancing issues, and is a shadow of it's obvious inspiration, the Halo franchise. It is obvious that the departure of key Bungie staff and the hard deadline set by Activision (to capitalize on the unique multi-generational marketshare this fall) gutted this game. There is a Reddit AMA from an alleged developer that confirms that the game that was released doesn't reflect the game they spent 8 years on and one can only assume that they'll include the additional (read: missing) content in paid DLC's, if at all.

I would recommend looking elsewhere to kick off your holiday gaming glut, as there are several titles coming out with a much more refined vision/pedigree. The gunplay IS very solid, and your every bullet feels as though it has weight and impact, but that ultimately wasn't enough to carry me farther than the first 2 1/2 weeks of playtime. Bungie has often touted the 10 year plan for the universe, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to find this the only title in the franchise.

On the whole, despite the solid shooting mechanics, I was rather disappointed at the lack of content/story, and can't help but feel a little mislead by the advertising. I can't in good conscious recommend this to anyone who is looking for a game with legs/follow through, or someone expecting the excellence of Bungie's previous efforts.

Destiny does get a-lot right. Destiny is a beautiful game with great visuals and awe-inspiring sky-boxes. Gameplay is fantastic. The music is good, but not nearly as good as Halo's music (Bungie, why on God's green Earth did you fire MARTY O'DONNEL? The mastermind behind Halo's incredible music?! Idiots...) Multiplayer is phenomenal and is what I spend most of my time playing. Bungie, as always, does a great job in this regard.

Unfortunately, Destiny's positives are outweighed by it's negatives. The game suffers from an insane amount of repetitiveness. You'll find yourself playing the exact same missions over and over and over and over again. For what? For nothing. The loot system was greatly flawed the last time I played (I know there was recently an update to fix it, but I haven't played it since then). These two issues alone are what make the game incredibly boring to play.

But it gets worst. The campaign mode is a complete and utter joke. There is barely a story, and what story is there is uninteresting and dull. I was expecting a Mass Effect/Halo like grand and intricate space opera that I could play over and over without getting bored. Will I be replaying Destiny's story? Not a chance.

Overall, it was a major disappointment and I hope Bungie gets their act together with future Destiny titles.

Graphically, it's OK. It's not astounding, it's correct. Neat Textures, not saturated in blur effects, and good general design. But why 30fps ? Seriously... It just ruins it. Enemies keep dodging every time you shoot them, and you just have not this fluid impression allowing you to follow them correctly.

Sounds are good, pretty convincing. And musics are... Well, it's Martin O'Donnell, its really classy, but they are too discreet, sadly you won't really pay attention to them.

And now we hit the very hard point, gameplay. If you played Halo Reach, you'll feel like it you're playing it all over again. There is the possibility to aim down the sights, but you'll only use it on a sniper. It's like they couldn't at all cut their links to Master Chief's universe. It's aliens (they hide as soon as they take damage, and have three fingers at each hand, all just like the Elites, seriously...), with player attracted bullets. But instead of fighting the Covenant, in models and design, you'll feel like you're facing enemies from an older Bungie game: Marathon. And leveling is a pure joke. A higher level enemy means it will absorb more total damage, but you'll deal the same amount of HP with each hit (I destroyed a lot of lvl 9 squads while being lvl 5 without it really being harder), and randomly, you'll find a level ?? enemy, where instead of making an epic fight with him, where insistence will eventually make you win, he'll just take no damage (with a somewhat insulting 'immune' word popping out). Evolving weapon levels is a good idea on paper, but Borderlands/Mass Effect (and more...) just do it better, since whatever level your weapon is, it'll handle just the same, with no advantages what so ever, and even only one design per weapon category is here (one DMR, one AR, one sniper, etc...). Missions are just killing squads after squads after squads of enemies, and bosses are just bullet-sponges, just empty your magazine, hide behind a wall, reload, repeat. Multiplayer can't be enjoyed unless you reach a 'respectable' level. And come on... This can easily be a single player game, why can't we play alone... Come across a higher level player, he'll just annihilate your own enemies (at least you'll still win EXP if you're in his surroundings).

I won't talk about story-telling, since it is purely trivial. You have the setting, and that's it. Bungie wanted the players to tell their own stories, but at this level, just make a fan fiction contest and put the winner in the game. There is no character nor event to remember.

So... To sum all that up... It could have been way better. $500 millions in development? I doubt it, include advertising cost which must be impressive (Activision got us accustomed to that), and maybe we'll reach that. Good graphics quality, nice soundtrack, not original enough gameplay, laughable story-telling. Wait for its price to drop (I bought it 110€ and I regret it). This game can be qualified a disappointment, but I won't say that, it's more of a missed opportunity.

I really want a refund on this game. They used 500 million dollars for this game. and I can't see where they used that budget. Was it for advert or the game itself?

    The game:

The story and lore: is gone, I have been playing for 10 hours and they can't deliver the story they want to give us. it's nothing more than fetch quests. and on earth the only place you can visit is Old Russia that's it, Bungie said the exploring will be big, what they meant by that: would be Moon, Mars and Venus not earth, the main story on earth would take 2 hours and your done and you will be moving on to moon.
They spend 7-8 years on a game what felt like they only used 3 years. The loading screen is taking forever, reminds me of Duke Nukem Forever on the Xbox 360

Combat: The combat is smooth and I really love it. Reminds me of borderlands but more better. But the enemies pull the game Down: you kill someone, walk 50 m and turn around. Boom they are back. the script on the enemies is this: they shoot, you take damage and they hide for minutes. Repeat.. No joke

PVP: like any other FPS. Team vs team. But this PVP is really balanced, that I enjoy it really much, more than the story/game itself. Which I find weird.

Level: To easy and for few lvl caps, (I know this game isn't aiming for a MMO but 20 really?)

Can I recommend this: No not at all, this game is only fun to play with friends not solo. You can wait to the Price drops. You won't feel the Bungie's 500 million budget and the 7-8 years progress, this game is like a light version of halo 2. Normally I love games, and I was looking forward to Destiny, but it disappoints on the levels this game sold me on, (story and exploration which isn't there and the loot are limited)

But this game doesn't deserve a rating below 6 or above 7, it's entertainment with your friends in PVP and if you just like lv ling and gear grind this game is for you(and killing aliens and zombies) but this game can't deliver any story itself which I don't like. If a game can't a deliver a decent story or a story that makes sense(I am talking about Zelda: The Faces of Evil) It's a game I can not recommend at all. I have been through all Things in this games, and if my review didn't convince you to buy it, don't buy it, I am normally open minded but this game didn't reach it's expectations. Destiny have been done to many times.

Sorry my grammar and have a nice day, hope this review helps you and your friends to buy this. Wait some months, that all I have to say.

It is an MMO by design, just wrapped up in the FPS package. It has many of the features people love (and hate) about an MMO. The budget is what they were given for the "10 year plan" for the game, not the initial product. So it will get bigger and better as time passes. We have 8 of them, plus the dwarf planet just in our system... so the amount of areas are severely lacking. It is a good game, and it will get better... but you might want to wait on getting it until it has more content. he gameplay is good, the PvP needs a lot of work, all in al, it is a decent game. An excellent shooter with a half-assed RPG element and minimalist story that devolves into a grind fest so fast that you will wonder at what point you were supposed to have any true fun or a unique experience.

After watching 5 legendary engrams turn into blues or currency, I came to realize this game was more designed to frustrate than reward. Unless of course you happen to be on of the very few lucky people who get top tier loot for going 2-21 in the basically mandatory Crucible (mandatory if you want loot from any other faction than the default one, which you will need if you want to actually get useful equipment).
With other good examples of Shooter/RPG games out there, it saddens me to see that this is the best that Bungie could come up with. Its even worse when you think about how they boasted about spending $500 mil. on the game. With the thin content, I'm curious as to where that money went.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is fun.
It is not 10/10 as many people stated here, and it is not 0/10 like the others told it.
It is just a fun space adventure if you have time to kill. Or in another words it is a game which wants to be something like halo with mixed mmo elements.

The biggest problem with the game is that mmo element. I bought a shooter and not an mmo. In a mmo I would be okay with the fact that group of enemies will respawn in a minute, but not here. I landed on the moon, and I cleared out a bunker full of aliens. I nearly did not even left the building, and the aliens respawned and started to fire at them. This just kills the feeling what you have accomplished so far.

The other negative thing is the story. There was a cinematic intro for 5 minutes. From that I managed to be informed, that there is some kind of a planet (or a moon, egg or ball?) which for some reason decided to help the human race and gave them advanced technology. But why Bungie?? And how????
After that, something bad happened (the darkness came. lol) and it caused a by apocalypse on the earth. And what is that Darkness?
You control a character which was dead for countless years, but he is OK with that, and never asks anything to catch up while he was sleeping.
I played 7 hours so far from the game but I never get any answers.

The gameplay is narrowed down in the following scheme: Go from the open world to the point A. In the point A go for point B and kill countless monsters. After you arrived to point B release your robot, until he hacks something kill dozens of monsters.

I only said negative things, but it is still fun for me. The games has as I said before that epic space adventure mood. You can realy believe the fact that you are the good guy cleaning the trash from the galaxy.

I say if you have money to spend buy it. But I believe that through september - december there will be enough games which are more worthier than this. I will play this to the end, but certainly I will never touch it again after that.

Plays OK, looks OK but Ultimately bland. Story structure is uninspiring, poorly thought out and repetitive. The Crucible (Vs Multiplayer mode) again is good enough but nothing about it stands out. Sony's fantastic PR machine has whipped up a storm about a truly average title. For me Bungie is the most overrated software developer in the history of video gaming. (BETA played on PS4, game on Xbone)

The game is very weak, exaggerated hype for a game without a decent story that is simply going from point A to B and kill enemies, not to mention the AI of this game that is extremely ugly ... I pity those who fell in this game Marketing , FAIL of the year, congratulations Bungie for this bomb

It's a slick, mechanically sound, and lavishly produced shooter that uses beauty to try and mask the potentially great but uninspired gameplay inside. [Issue#117, p.62]

Destiny feels like the key elements of an FPS and an MMO gently resting shoulder to shoulder, instead of being fused together in a truly creative way. It plays and looks great, and offers many, many hours of entertainment to anyone okay with repeating the same tasks, but it isn’t exactly the game-changing science fiction epic we felt it was aspiring to.

An ambitious if repetitive combination of shooter and loot based ARPG. A boost in loot drop frequency could definitely boost the fun/score. [Issue#254, p.47]
