The single player is on par with Titanfall's which is to say it is vaguely non-existent. The story is incoherent and vapor thin. The multiplayer is the most punishing multiplayer game I've ever played. Where in most games I find myself often with a 2-3 Kill/Death ratio Destiny regularly rewards me with a 0.2 to 0.3 KD. I saw a poor soul yesterday who finished a full round with a 0.09 K/D. While supposedly the developers somewhat normalize weapon and class stats--level skill bonuses do seem to come into play as do abilities. The result is that higher level players will often completely dominate even talented low level players.

The game mechanics are also badly tuned for balance. There are more 1 hit kills than in any game I've ever played. Most firefights last less than 2-3 seconds which eliminates a lot of potential for tactical movement and teamwork. Unlike most games which have found a good balance between powerups and regular match stats, Destiny is all or nothing. You either have a weapon of incomprehensible strength or you have a pee shooter. Once someone has used their charged super power/skill it's best to just run and hide--you'll almost certainly die. There is a super power where periodically someone can simply jump into the middle of some enemies and everyone nearby will die. In a game with lots of close quarters combat that means someone appears and kills half your team within 1 second. Most matches seem to last 10 minutes or so and when you have 6 people on your team that means about once a minute you are at threat of being instakilled by someone with a fully charged powerup.

Enjoyed the game until I got to lv 20 and finished the story at lv 14 , now it's just a boring repetitive grind to lv up and get good gear , multiplayer is very average and isn't balanced or fair. Needs more content and not just the same missions over and over and over again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's extremely repetitive. There is no variety. Not to mention the story is short and makes absolutely no sense. The story goes nowhere and ends with the weakest boss battle out of all. The multiplayer is Call of Duty meets Halo so, if you like a game that requires little skill and just random nonsense this is perfect for you. Otherwise, don't believe the hype. Expand

This game is too repetitive and will go into the trunk of my car. On my next trip to the game store, I plan to give it to a parent of a nagging child and save them some money for school supplies. No amount of expensive window dressing can make a boring game worth my time.

You can feel a bit of Halo behind the scenes, but at the same time Destiny is able to set itself apart from its predecessor with the RPG elements. The music and atmosphere is good, and the level design and graphics are excellent. So why the 5 you ask? The same problems that occur in any always-online game. You've been playing through the campaign solo, finished a particularly hard section, and then BOOM there was a problem connecting to partner services so now lets kick you out of your solo instance because you can't play single player! Admittedly I was jealous of everybody I knew that was going to play Destiny. I'm kinda cheap and didn't want to buy a next gen console just for one game so I figured I'd pass on this game for now and maybe get it when it came out for PC. One friend offered to lend me his Xbox One for a week so I could try it out. I was instantly excited to try out this new hyped up IP. One friend offered to lend me his Xbox One for a week so I could try it out. I was instantly excited to try out this new hyped up IP. I'm a fan of Halo and Borderlands and enjoyed the story that went along with each so I figured this would be a win. What I found was mostly disappointment.

Character creation was pretty simple but fun. Nothing particularly special about it other than 3 races and a decent amount of options. Good stuff.

The first time I used a shotgun I was pissed. Your character doesn't correct after recoil. If you fire an assault rifle the recoil slowly pushes your cross hairs upwards as it should. But when you stop firing it returns to it's starting location. This does not happen with shotguns which makes no sense. Basically after ever shot you have to correct where your cross hairs are but not with rifles... Why?

Loading times are unbearable. To be fair I'm mainly a PC gamer so that's never really an issue but there is no way anybody who plays this game on console is happy with the amount of time they wait for things to load. Wasn't there another way? Maybe make smaller maps so we don't have to wait so long?

The large maps are another issue. What can I do with these huge maps... There is nothing particularly special about them and they don't have any use. They seem to be big just to be big. I end up spawning in the same spot during the start of earth missions only to run across the whole map multiple times in the same direction. Why can't they spawn me in a different spot so I don't have to run by the same rocks and sheds over and over again seeing the same enemies in the same spots. I quickly found out that it's better to hop on your bike and just drive across to your destination skipping over enemies. Basically what I'm saying is travel time is boring. Why not give me a reason to stop and fight enemies and to explore. I haven't found a reason yet.

Boring enemies. It's the same guys over and over again. Also, giving an enemy lots of hit points does not make him harder to beat, it just makes him tedious and annoying. Give the enemies neat abilities like flight, teleportation, grappling hooks, burrowing, tossable shields, blinding effects, etc. It just all seems so "shoot, shoot, cover... shoot, shoot, cover"

The loot system... Oh god, the loot system. What a steaming mess. I haven't gotten far with it but dang is it ugly. Why give a purple drop if it turns into a blue or green? WHY? If you're goal is to make purple loot tough to find then lower the drop rate. Don't make some sort of stupid lottery system. It's like playing the lottery to win a chance to play the lottery. It doesn't work and it needs to change.

My overall experience with watching my friends play and my actual time with the game has really upset me. How can a company with so much money, resources, fans, and backing release such a poorly designed game? I'm overall dissapointed and will not be purchasing this for the PC when it's released.

Save your money, do not buy Destiny.

I really do like the way you can join up with random people and crazy story, it actually paired me up with a neighbor down the street (I believe it uses locality to determine this). That said I played for 30 minutes last night and was unable to find anyone. Another time I had 3 people in my fireteam and when they all left I was forced to fight a boss by myself. The bosses are somewhat cool looking but require nothing other than shooting for 20 minutes straight so there is a terrrible level of monotony. The multiplayer is passable as well, and while the "gear game" is there, I forsee a very short shelf life for the game beyond a couple months even for the most hard core fans. Starting off with 3 vs. 3 and now utilizing 6 vs. 6 still seems small and not up to par with even the Big Team Battles of Halo's past and nowhere near what we have come to expect from next gen. Quite possibly the biggest disapointment in video games I have ever bought into. FYI you can sell back your game by October to Gamestop and I think still get at least $30 for it. I plan to do this. Still perplexed as how Bungie could have let this happen. Also just as perplexed as to who runs the story division over there? I mean I'm not being picky, its just awful. Huge fan of Peter Dinklage too (Voice of your "ghost"). But there is only so much he can do to carry the story of the game in a role where he is a floating orb. Seriously Bungie, What happened??!?!?! Nice clean crisp graphics, but lacking in EVERY other design element.
The game feels very bare and stripped leaves you wondering where the amount of attention and features that went into Halo have disappeared. LESS variety than Call of Duty. No local Co-Op, No offline mode. This game will NOT last 10 years, they`d be lucky to have a strong following after 2 years.

    So why the low(ish) score?

First off, there is next to no story. And this is jolting, because there is a LOT happening in the background. Unique races, some giant sphere called The Traveller, Earth is destroyed...none of this is explained beyond vague secondary conversations. There is zero lore. You can speak to no one except for the rare story cutscene.

You're awakened and it is said you were presumed dead...and that's all they say about that. I couldn't shake the feeling that they had big plans for a rich story and dropped it in order to make the release date (or budget). It's always the same:

    "Fight these enemies on Earth!"
    "Why? Who are they?"

"Fight these enemies on the Moon!"
    "...okay, well who are they?"

    "Fight these enemies on Venus!"
"Seriously...who am I killing and why?"

The entire game could have ended with a plot twist that Ghost was leading me to kill innocent aliens to end the universe and I would have thought "you know...that kind of makes sense."

Just as offensive is the terrible mission layout. You go somewhere, Tyrion Lannister the Robot needs time to hack a computer, and you fight 2-3 waves of enemies until he opens it (always coincidentally when you've killed the last enemy). Mission ends after you defeat a bullet sponge (no strategy at all. Run, get in some shots, run, get in some shots...)

Once you're done with the story, there's little to do outside of patrol or replay strike missions (over and over).

I did not dock points for the multiplayer, as I am 100% aware it is something most people will enjoy. To me, it's too little strategy and all jumping and shooting. Having to drain someone's shields to get a kill is exhausting and ultimately not very rewarding in my opinion.

While I was entertained by this game, I truly was disappointed in the end. With an MMO, you expect the story to be less than stellar, but this story was nearly removed from the game altogether. The multiplayer is nothing special, especially considering I can't use any of the abilities I got from playing the game.

Ultimately, as it stands, this is a short-term fun game that is saved by shooting mechanics and good company (though that's limited by a lack of match making).

So where does it land? (Avoid, Borrow, Own) I would have to say....

Borrow. You may end up liking it enough to buy, but at this stage if I had known what I do now, I would not have purchased this game.

-A variety of aliens to fight. 4 different factions. The Fallen, Hive, Vex, and Cabal. All different in look and even have different combat styles. Cabals have soldiers with jet packs and the Hive have wizards that cast poison fields, just to name a few.
-The combat is great. Jumping around the field, finding cover, and using your abilities. With a team of 3 it can get crazy on the higher level content.

    The Bad:
-The campaign. You'll have no idea what is going on. The campaign feels like it has been ripped out for later content and we are given a jumbled up mess.
-The loot system is terrible. Top the chart in the crucible? Yea, that legendary and exotic gear is going to the worst or random player. Loot drops are not exciting unless its an engram.
-The guns are bland. They all look mostly the same until you get exotic gear. And why can't we use alien weapons? That would of made the combat even better!
-The mission types are as follows: Waves of enemies. Scan a location. Kill enemies for pick ups. Yea...even in the campaign.

There's some good to this game, but for now, wait for the expansions to come and see if anything is fixed are better content is added.

Their are guns that are simple over powered and they are starting weapons which leaves players with the response "if you can't beat them join them".
The diversity in the weapons is great but again, it leaves the lower levels at a big disadvantage not being able to wield the high level weapons. If that is not enough for you, the perks; higher level players have, can leave low levels at the player mercy. Their is no skill base ranking system that you would expect from a Bungie game, which after 343's attempt at Halo 4, you would almost certainly expect their to be one.

I'm a grown man with family and a job. Why does that matter? Because if nothing else I have a limited amount of time available to play video games and as such have no desire to waste it all for literally almost no tangible progress. It feels like for nearly 100+ hours spent, as I have since level 25 or so, to have barely have reached level 28, still have participated in NO raids, there is really no good reason for me to keep playing. This game should be Exhibit A of Bungie completely forgetting what they knew and were good at and passing off this over-hyped to an otherwise unsuspecting but still loyal fanbase.

Bungie, you fooled me this time and in the process burned up all the goodwill I had saved up for you. I won't be spending $35 or more for any of the DLC and at this point nearly two months after you launched the game I will not be purchasing any further installments of this title. Or any of your future titles. I am going to do the only thing I can do and vote with my wallet.

Before I attempted the raid or got enough strange coins to buy anything from Xur. Destiny was a marvel of a game that when I first experienced it a sense of wonder; the lack of information about the story as I played just made me more hungry I thought eventually everything will be explained. Eventually I'll be lvl 26 and can do the raid, eventually I'll be able to experience Destiny, but I then realized watching the end cut scene my hopes of a story that would wrap the whole experience up never happened. I got to lvl 26 I did the raid, which in my opinion was the best part of the entire game, I did the heroic got coins bought exotics, did the nightfall. Week after week I repeated the same process, with no added content even the events were just re-skins of existing armor and had no purpose besides saying you did it. (Thats before Bungie decided to give the Iron Banner armor +30 light even though that didn't help me because trying to play the crucible even after numerous updates was pretty painful experience, in my opinion the reason they added + 30 light armor for iron banner is to nudge people that are still on the fence about the DLC to get it if they hadn't gotten Lvl 30 as of yet through the Venus Raid) Playing the same strikes, doing the same bounties day after day became tiresome. I managed to get a Lvl 29 Titan, Lvl 28 Hunter and a Lvl 26 Warlock I never managed to do hard mode raid nor reach lvl 30. To other people they can put 400 hours into Destiny and never get bored for me I can't do it, I got my money's worth and I am content to stop playing Destiny, and have no interest in DLC. If you like grinding that is most of Destiny's replay-ability so be warned before buying, but if you don't mind doing the same thing over and over then Destiny could be a game for you. Expand

'Disappointing' is the best way to sum it up after all the hype they game got and for the names behind it and serves as a shining example of why the idea of 'pre-ordering' is now a horrible thing and why developers need to find better ways to get us on board with a game other than offering some kind of exclusive for buying it beforeBeautiful but very empty, uninspired and repetitive. 'Disappointing' is the best way to sum it up after all the hype they game got and for the names behind it and serves as a shining example of why the idea of 'pre-ordering' is now a horrible thing and why developers need to find better ways to get us on board with a game other than offering some kind of exclusive for buying it before knowing what we'll really get. Very playable and can be very exciting at times, but it's too often that it's broken up by long boring missions that you've done many times over. Most events in the campaign will involve guarding something from a 'horde mode' style attack. The biggest let downs are: 1) for a game to brag about customization only to require you to use the greatest/strongest armor doesn't count as customization. Yes, you can pick what COLOR you are, but as far as what armor you are wearing you must wear the best if you with to progress. 2) The story is unfinished... Yes, if you bought this for the campaign alone then prepare for an unfinished story UNLESS you fork out $15 for every bit of DLC thats planned for the next several years 3) No exploitation in the time there actually is story. Who are these guys? Why am I killing them? What do they want? You don't know, and you'll be left not knowing. This game is just a shell of what could be an amazing game but instead just ended up being a hype machine that wants you to pay and pay and pay for more content. The only time this game really shines is in the Crucible, which is the competitive player vs player matches. Expand

In short - so much promise and so little delivery. Fun to play in term of controlling character but the lacking story line, repeating missions quickly get tired on solo, but are occasionally fun with friends. Did the whole story and levelled up to 27. Sigh...starts off well but then falls apart as if the heart has been ripped out making what should be an epic game only average.

This was the biggest gaming disappointment of 2014. This game has absolutely no character, no great moments. You run somewhere, hold X shoot things that come at you. THAT IS THE WHOLE PVE/CAMPAIGN GAME. PVP is actually a lot of fun, sadly. Too bad the maps are too few. The game was nowhere near finished and the budget at 500,000,000 is nowhere seen. This would be a good rent.

Greetings fellow Guardians!! What are all of you thinking when playing destiny??? Bungie claims to have worked 5-6 years on this game. A game that is suppose to be an mmorpg. Now let's take a look at what those 5-6 years have brought us. When you venture into the realm that destiny Has to offer; Your immediately captivated by the marvelous display of the landscape and even more so as youGreetings fellow Guardians!! What are all of you thinking when playing destiny??? Bungie claims to have worked 5-6 years on this game. A game that is suppose to be an mmorpg. Now let's take a look at what those 5-6 years have brought us. When you venture into the realm that destiny Has to offer; Your immediately captivated by the marvelous display of the landscape and even more so as you gain progress in story. One Main issue dawns upon the players when they realize there's no chat box to commuicate. The only way to socialize it to add gaurdians to your fireteam(1-6 players at a time). You can see why this Is an issue since the main component in all mmorpgs is the ability to socialize with other players.

Furthermore, there is an extreme lack of story. All role playing games come with a major focus on Lore. Remember when you were young and all you lived to play for were those cutscenes? All you get from destinys story is a few cutscenes with still a major lack of story depth. Bungies response is....oh wait there is none. Bungie continues with the "expansion pack" called Dark Below. Witch does nothing to help the Storyline of this supposedly "Epic" game. Don't get me wrong the game is fun but it comes to end all to quick. You can only do the four same strikes a few times before it just seems repetitive. The loot system is another let down. Its all random based witch evidently makes destiny just more grinding based to get the best Weapons and armor. Bungie is obviously holding back to profit from destiny in the long term.

In Addition, where are all the planets and Galaxy's were going to be traveling to? Destiny as is does not allow us even to explore our suns entire solar system.less when it comes to the planets. We only get access to Earth, the moon, Venus, and Mars. With one medium sized area for each planet. this game has been more of a let down above all. Don't get me started on the tower..not having raid matchmaking is mind boggling. There's no excuse. Yeah its "hard and needs strategy". Thats why a guardian soloed crotas end raid with no guns. Players can manage with a team of strangers. Time has proven so. How did Bungie go from Halos Magnificent story to Destinys major lack of one? There's hardly anything to do beside grinding. Why not add a Sparrow Race Playlist? And a Ship Race Playlist? Why not add to the story to create more things to do in destiny like side quests in addition to the bounties all ready available.

where's the Character Build Up? Every class is practically the same with minor tweaks. levels don't seem to hav much of a purpose besides being able to equip better armor; however, theres hardly anything about the armor that makes your character unique. Take final fantasy for example the range of weapons and armor are so vast no one character looks the same. When you actually play Destiny you keep thinking its going to get better but eventually you find out it never does. You reach level twenty without even knowing who the travelers are or what it is we are fighting against besides there name. even more so when the story mode is completed. This game needs to take tips from fallout and mass effect. Now Bungie is talking about the next "Expansion pack" House Of Wolves. Seriously?? Expansion pack? Compare them to Final Fantasy Expansion packs and they don't even come close. Bungie needs to rename these expansion picks "Add-ons". Bungie releasing the game in portions through DLC is not going to make this game last as long as halo.

-The Grinding(Even though unlike most people I enjoy grinding)
    -Cryptarch
-Where the **** is the Trading?!
-You have to use "Loot Caves"/Glitches in order to get geared up(Or you can just do the weekly Heroic Strike and raids but in Raids you will die TOO much from some **** thing Bungie expects you are a god at doing, and Strikes get Boring after a while once you realize you aren't getting gear that is better than the stuff you have...
-The DLC does almost NOTHING except boost your character and add a few new things like Raids, Weapons, and Armor instead of yknow...FIXING THINGS

It's a slick, mechanically sound, and lavishly produced shooter that uses beauty to try and mask the potentially great but uninspired gameplay inside. [Issue#117, p.62]

Destiny feels like the key elements of an FPS and an MMO gently resting shoulder to shoulder, instead of being fused together in a truly creative way. It plays and looks great, and offers many, many hours of entertainment to anyone okay with repeating the same tasks, but it isn’t exactly the game-changing science fiction epic we felt it was aspiring to.

An ambitious if repetitive combination of shooter and loot based ARPG. A boost in loot drop frequency could definitely boost the fun/score. [Issue#254, p.47]
