The gameplay lacks finesse and refinement, serving up frustration in place of fluidity. Tennis is a game of endurance, precision and energy, three elements that AO International Tennis fails to deliver. With that in mind, its abundance of content means very little.

The first one to release actually came out in Australia a few months ago but the rest of the world had to wait for AO International Tennis. Was the game worth the wait? Unfortunately on the whole it wasn’t worth the wait and despite having a few good things going for it AO International Tennis unfortunately has got more things wrong than its got right. The gameplay that’s present has good things and bad things going for it but in the end the bad things stand out more. The controls in the game harm the fun factor quite considerably and that’s mainly because they’ve made certain shots very difficult to pull off because they’ve made them too complicated. This is a shame because when playing the AI on the high difficulty settings you do have a fun and challenging time, at least until the problems take over. One of the biggest problems I found with the game is that your shots don’t always register and sometimes when the shots do register they aren’t the shots you played for, which can be very frustrating. If that wasn’t bad enough you also have to deal with a few technichal issues and without a doubt these issues harm the immersion levels quite a bit. There is however quite a lot of content for you to get to grips with and without a doubt the best thing about this game is its character creator. The character creator has a lot of depth to it and I must admit that I did have some fun doing this. Unfortunately though not all the content is great and I especially found this to be the case when it came to the game’s Career Mode. The Career Mode is just too basic and it doesn’t really give you a reason to continue playing and not only that there isn’t enough real-life tennis players to make this mode worthwhile, which is a shame. One of my favourite things about the game was the presentation side of things. I was very impressed with the visuals and sound design in the game and in my opinion they’ve done a very good job of capturing the atmosphere and feel of the tennis formula. At the end of the day I appreciate some of the effort that has gone into AO International Tennis and I so wanted to love the game more, but unfortunately I just couldn’t because it just has too much wrong with it. Fans of tennis games will definitely find the problems to be very off-putting and this does harm the game’s potential and when it’s all said and done it just doesn’t do enough to get a thumbs up from me. This is *not* an easy, nor accessible tennis game. And that's what's beautiful about it. It takes time to learn, and it punishes lapses in judgement or mistakes. But once you've put the practice in, it feels amazing to pull of a stylish serve/volley, or hit a cracking winner from the baseline. And taking 10, 15, or even more shots in a rally to really position yourself and your opponent is tactical and enjoyable.

It's a very different approach to tennis games compared to what we've seen historically, and I like it.

The first few weeks I would have given it score : 2
It is a difficult game to master and calibrate, but once you have set the AI and learned the game mechanics, it gives a lot of satisfaction. Some animations and game situations need to be improved, such as recovering from a dampened ball or an opponent's lob, but overall it's a game. Rating: 8.5

Voto: 8,5
