Well i am half way through the campaign and last night while playing i sat there and thought its good but not that good.... the multiplayer is pretty nice i like the upgrades they did on it compared to halo 2. Its close to the same game with twists that i think were needed esp for online. but good job overall microsoft.

Based on the games multiplayer, this game deserves a nine. I don't play it myself because its not my cup of tea, but with the most robust and feature laden online modes I can see why many people do.

I've been following this game from the begining. this is a fantastic game. yes, its mainly focused on multiplayer because in the long term that whats going to keep their fan base up. yeah its gonna piss off the people who do it mainly for the story line but it makes it up wth its incredible multiplayer.

Bungie can do no wrong! this game is just too damn awesome! Tha multiplayer is awesome & Bungie incorporated gamers mods from Halo 2 into 3, now that is too cool. Tha sad part is that the trilogy is over :( please please make Halo 4, 5 & 6!!! Halo 3 is tha Greatest Game of all time. Graphics dont quite match up to Gears of War but gameplay beats EVERYTHING!

I'd give it a 9.6-9.8, but I'm fine with a 10 too. Lives up to the hype and goes beyond it as well; who was expecting the brilliance that is Forge? Also while the graphics may not be quite as good as Gears Of War's, anyone who was disappointed by them is a very cynical person indeed, it's considerably more beautiful than a heck of alot of other next-gen games. Compare it to Red Steel, go on.

Everything I expected, and maybe a little bit more. The campaign comes to a satisfying(albeit somewhat predictable) close, and the multiplayer cranks it up another notch. It's certainly enough to warrant the amount of hype. It may not be revolutionary, but it's sure as hell fun.

Also a few comments about the graphics, are you guys blind, "It looks like Halo2" was one comment..."what?!" Firstly no way, and second just no way. The game is amazing, the story is an intensive conclusion to an amazing trilogy, and quite frankly we need to take that part in mind. If you want a better more advanced Halo3 experience try playing the game on heroic or legendary and see what happens when the AI starts calling for reinforcements and backup, and starts making better use of it's tools and weapons. So 10 is my vote I have been a Halo fan since before I had an xbox, and I still think it is the best story based FPS and online multiplayer FPS to date. Sony may be able to beat the graphics, but getting that many fans interested 3 times will be harder I think. I have never really been a Halo fan but I found myself more disapointed with Halo 3 than Halo 2. It was too short, the storyline is not engaging, the graphics remind me of Halo 2, The levels were repetitive and environments all looked the same, it has cheesy characters and a cheesy storyline. Also its glitchy, idk if its just my copy or what but the the final cutscene just died, and i never saw the credits it just got stuck on a single frame, now i gotta replay the final part to see the whole thing. There are also many bugs from killing things, often the enemies will just start to run into a wall and keep running thinking they're going somewhere. not often but it happened a few times to me, ill kill something or someone and their body will do that annoying twitch if it lands on an edge or another object. Usually im not picky about little bugs like this but Bungie prides themselves at completely polishing a game with no bugs and my grade for polishing it is a B-, not the A that halo was or B+ that halo 2 was. Graphically it is amazing at times but a lot of things are just bland and look exactly like they did in halo 2. The explosions are the best ive seen in any video game thou. I can't believe all of the negative reviews I'm seeing. Those people who are giving ratings of 1-6/10 really need too open their eyes and realize that too much innovation could change the game entirely. Halo 3 has innovation (equipment, nicely tweaked control scheme, Forge, Saved Films) but it doesn't go over the limit that many people are expecting it to, so it still feels I can't believe all of the negative reviews I'm seeing. Those people who are giving ratings of 1-6/10 really need too open their eyes and realize that too much innovation could change the game entirely. Halo 3 has innovation (equipment, nicely tweaked control scheme, Forge, Saved Films) but it doesn't go over the limit that many people are expecting it to, so it still feels like Halo. If you feel it was overhyped, blame yourself for expecting the hand of god to come down and make Halo 3 the perfect game. The Single Player/Co-Op campaign is somewhat short, but far more spectacular than a game like Gears of War's even shorter and less exciting campaign. Playing 4 man Co-Op over Xbox Live, a feature that GoW left out, is the best Co-Op gets, especially on the Legendary difficulty. In fact, the only issue I have is that the dialogue from characters is sometimes so low that you have to turn up your TV a bit during cutscenes. Not a big deal. Multiplayer is nearly flawless in my opinion. There are so many different game modes to choose from, in addition to being able to create your own and download other people's game modes and maps. I've noticed that a majority people are sticking to the "Golden Three things of Halo"(Weapon, melee, grenades)in conjunction with the Assault Rifle, which can make the game a bit repetitive at times. The solution? Turn Assault RIfles off. Turn anything you want off. Make it a rockets match with low gravity on your version of High Ground loaded with fusion cores. Customize anything you want to. This is perhaps Halo 3's biggest innovation. Halo 3's graphics are not bad either. Granted, GoW's textures beat out Halo 3 here, but when you consider how much of a technological advancement the Unreal Engine 3 was in GoW and that Halo 3 does not have that engine, Halo 3's graphics are quite remarkable, especially on an HDTV. Marty O' Donnell's composition is as amazing as in the first two games, and it expectedly adds depth and complexity to the game's single player missions. Gameplay is extrordinary, as is the AI. All in all, I'd ask that you actually play ALL parts of the game (that includes the multiplayer unlike most reviews I've seen here) before you write a 5/10 review because "Halo 3's storyline was too short!" Oh, and if you haven't played any of the game at all and you're trying to write a review to bash it, go away. Expand

I give this game a rating of 9 because I am a Halo player. By that, I mean; I play Halo online in xbox live. Now if you have limited experience w/ online play or, it's never interested you.. then I can see why you could be disappointed by the campaign. For all you that are bitchin about the short campaign, and not breaking new ground.. I hear you.. now go away. The reason why this game is so good (in my opinion) is because it STILL plays like halo, but is SO polished that it will entertain for years. It comes down to Fun Factor. Period. Now, when I say Halo (and Fun Factor) I mean Halo on xbox live.. because frankly there's no other game that plays with the Online functionality and game play like Halo. Like Bungie's 'holy pyramid' of weapon, grenade, and melee? What do you guys know about that? To me, that is the heart of playing Halo competitively. Bioshock? hahaha does that game play online? I've rented that game, and graphics and game play were admittingly excellent BUT there's no Online aspect to it!! In this day and age, why the fuck would you buy ANY First Person Shooter if it's not online? Bioshock was entertaining, it had smoother graphics and sound than Halo 3, BUT could I see myself playing that game a month after buying it? How would I do that? Somebody please explain to me how a grown adult could play a FPS against 'the computer' after you've beaten it. Do you guys really have that much fun with it? Really? Maybe it's me, but, this day and age.. If the game doesn't have Online play and if you cant play that game with your buddy half way across the world, in the comfort of your own living room, all the while chatting about the last episode of Beauty and the Geek.. I am not forking down $$ for that game. That's all my halo rant.. thanks for reading lol LONG LIVE HALO (at least until Bungie develops a new FPS). Expand

The really cool aspect is Forge, where you can take a map and change the spawning of players, weapons, vehicles, as well as scenery objects and teleports. This could use some improvements though. You get a limited amount of an item you can use, despite having plenty of budget (the way they keep items down). You also can't write on anything, which would be really handy. Also, a delete all items on map option would be FANTASTIC. Overall, this game is good, but it does NOT deserve a 10. First, I've been with Halo from the beginning. The first release amazed, the second released was good with a dumb ending, but I had had a deep fear after seeing many unflattering screenshots that this release would not extend the state of the art and I'm sad to say its true. Aside from a few new weapons and vehicles and debatebly enhanced graphics the game breaks no new ground. First, I've been with Halo from the beginning. Aside from a few new weapons and vehicles and debatebly enhanced graphics the game breaks no new ground. Which is a shame for such an anticipated release with so much money behind it. Let me break it down. Graphics: 7 Not as good as Gears of War and not as good as Bioshock. The character models are average quality. For example, not as detailed as the players in Madden. Environment: 7 You'd expect to be able to interact with all kinds of things in the environment and blow stuff up. At least this is the mark of next-gen FPS today. Not so in Halo. You can knock stuff over, but you can't look inside of things, break things, use things, etc. Its a very superficial environment. Sound: 5 Oh boy. It's sad. I have a dolby 5.1 setup and the sound from Halo is very muffled and low-def. The weapon firing sounds or ok, but things like grenades sound like they are farther from you than they visually are. Little to no surround effects or ambient noise. A total lack of depth in the sound field. For the best 5.1 game sound, crisp and clean, check out Bioshock as the new standard (I'm not a fanboy, just using a real example of quality). Gameplay: 7 Same gameplay as before with a few new gadgets. No cover control (such as in GoW and Rainbow 6), no squad control, etc. Same, same, same. Story: 6 Getting a bit dated. The opening dialog is a bit perplexing. An utter lack of mind provoking elements in this story. Its a "story on rails". Not to mention, that for 3 versions of Halo the opening sequence is the cliche "the aliens have invaded our barracks" scenario. Tired! Get some new material. Overall: A very generous 7 Expand

Here, in the Advertising Age, there are plenty of times when something gets so much marketing money behind it that you can't go anywhere without hearing about it (SpiderMan 3, for example). And then there are those times, fewer and farther between, when something has so much hype behind it because it is, in fact, a quality product. Halo 3 falls into the latter of the two. In a nutshell, 3 took the best qualities from 1 & 2, gave them a super makeover, added new weapons, vehicles - ones that are enjoyable to use, as always. But it's still classic Halo gameplay - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. As far as plot goes, Halo 3 finishes the series leaving you satisfied in every way, not leaving it too open-ended. You get to do things in 3 that you always wanted to do in the first two, like destroy dropships, or play through the campaign with friends online. The level design threw back to Halo 1, through most of the game, not copying 1, but reminding you of certain key moments. The ending even brings you back to a specific level in 1, which I won't go into, but it's not a boring rehash, it's exciting. The multiplayer side, even though I've just begun to tap into it, has the most updates of all, but once the new button configuration was adapted - which took a little while but was not terribly frustrating - it felt just like Halo should. I blew through the campaign, finishing it in two evenings, and I will be replaying it quite a bit. I love the fact that this game actually has more secrets (the skulls) and tons more to customize. There are very very few companies in this world that near perfection in what they do. Microsoft is NOT one them, but Bungie is - at least right now. People should not be so pigheaded that they can't recognize excellence when they see it. Thanks Bungie, for making, in my opinion, a perfect game. Expand

Halo 3 is a masterpiece, regardless of "how short the campaign is"... they took all of the good stuff from Halo CE, made it better, and put it in the game. Plus, all the stuff that made Halo 2 fun (not much, personally) and put that in too. They even added more than that to the game, which makes it even better. A repetitive, tedious, and overall cookie cutter game in respects to Halo 2. This bore-fest is just like the other two, but with HDR lighting. The graphics arent even really better than Halo 2. One of the major problems in this game is that it can be beaten in less than 3 hours. That is not a game worthy of a 9.5. Bungie, good job at causing major hpye during the coming days of this game's release, but I just can't give you much credit on what you guys are meant for: a good game. Looks like Bungie is better off at thecircus than behind a programmer's desk. Expand

Its amazing how Bungie manages to wow us. The single player is easy but the co-op was really fun with up to 4 players. the graphics were good but not if you dont have a hd screen . the point of the game isnt its campaign. the point is to get online n play. it doesnt matter if the campaign was boring you should b playing online not on campaign every1 who has played online knows that. i Its amazing how Bungie manages to wow us. I'm very disappointed that an almost perfect multiplayer from Halo 1 evolved into a catastrophic mess that Halo 2 and Halo 3 have become. Granted Halo 3 looks to correct some of the mistakes from Halo 2, but still fails in so many ways. Radar in any multiplayer game will only promote people to camp. Granted Halo 3 looks to correct some of the mistakes from Halo 2, but still fails in so many ways. Radar in any multiplayer game will only promote people to camp. It's almost as if the game developers couldn't stand being killed so fast by the pistol in Halo 1 so they decided to make it pointless to use in 2 or 3. I'm still holding out hope that MLG will make a custom gametype via Forge without radar and use about 75% shields. Since you now start with the assault rifle 80% of the battles you face are two people running at one another with assault rifles firing and the one who lands the melee the victor. Unless of course you have someone in the distance using a Battle Rifle or Sniper to pick off the repeatative action. You also are unable to hold up a defensive position by throwing a grenade off the wall to keep the opponent from charging right at you, because the frag grenades don't even blow the opponent back or do more than 35% damage. I've had it happen on countless occassions when I just get a double kill, but that third player comes charging right after you. You throw a grenade right at their feet and scurry around the corner to reload and let your shields recharge for a fair fight. As soon as you get around the corner you throw another grenade just in case he's continuing the pursuit. And wouldn't you know it... That person just keeps running and shooting without any worry that the 2 grenades will kill him. Heck in Halo 1 if you were hit with a grenade at point blank range, you were almost dead and it would blow you 5-10 meters away. Giving the opponent the advantage now because of a well placed grenade. I myself was a huge advocate and fan of the Halo series and would travel halfway across the country to play AGP and MLG tournaments for Halo 1. But the skill level here for Halo 3 is similar to Halo 2, and since the grenades barely deter anyone from charging right at you... It's basically a better version of Halo 2. Better graphics, but almost the same game play. So if you loved Halo 2, you'll love Halo 3. If you're like me and loved Halo 1, then you'll become quickly annoyed with the radar and people camping around corners with the sword (or now hammer). And although the idea seemed interesting, all the 'X' button items need to be removed too. Again I can't fault Bungie because they've appealed to the common FPS player who's just looking hop online and kill some friends. But for those hardcore gamers where you just have to be the best of the best, I'd say wait for COD 4 or perhaps Team Fortress 2 from the upcoming Half-Life 2 Orange Box. Expand

It made my day when I noticed that BioShock reclaimed the top Metascore spot from Halo 3, as the former is a far superior game. In a word, Halo 3 is... meh. Baby's first fps, with no changes from game to game and incredibly basic. Also the one-player is total garbage, and there is NO replay value.

  1. It's the addition of the Forge level editor and the saved films that give the game an even longer set of legs, legs that will probably keep you running at full speed until Bungie figures out where, exactly, to go from here.
  2. Halo 3 is the best Xbox 360 game to date. The single-player campaign and storyline are both very strong, but it's Forge and the Saved Films features that will likely go down in history as Bungie's crowning achievements. They've basically taken everything great about the series and improved upon it in every way, then added some amazing new features that we'll be using for years to come.
  3. 100
It's solid gameplay, immense replayability, online functionality and incredible production values will ensure its place in video game history, and it is, without a doubt, a satisfying and fulfilling close to the beloved trilogy[?].
