There's nothing to enjoy about this game. This game is narrow minded, boring, unimpressive, and lame. How come a talking grunt is louder than my assault rifle? Why does it take me out of my scope just because I was shot. Every gun sucks, there is no gun in this "sci-fi" shooter that isn't even remotely more sophisticated or more deadly than weapons we use now in 2007. And where is my ammo! Why do I only carry 3 extra mags for my rifle. I'm always short on ammo, but I guess it doesn't matte because it's easier just to punch every enemy to death. People, you need to wake up, this is not what makes a game "good". Play the Half Life 2 series and you'll see what innovation, and excellent game play is ALL about. Expand

I have to give this letdown a zero due to the fanboys who give it a 10. This game is a major letdown. The series has lasted one game to long. There is nothing new or revolutionary about Halo3. The best of the series is easily the original. Horrible hit detection, laggy game play. They actually somehow made the game more boring. Congrats Bungie. See you people on COD 4.

My real vote is actually an 8, but I give it a 2 to counteract the fanboys who say stuff like "HALO 3 ROCKS. 10".

Halo 2 did such a great job introducing new elements eg dual-wield, cloak armor, play as arbiter, prophets, brutes, drones, very good twist on storyline and managed to let you relive the "wow" feeling of the 1st one. Halo 3 - graphical leap isn't what it should have

Halo 3 - graphical leap isn't what it should have been, considering 360. New gameplay elements like bubble shield etc are under-utilized (vehicles should bounce off), way fewer movies that either filled narrative gaps or added immersion. Last level = very fun, but identical to Halo 1's last level which was fun.

Bottom line : What did Bungie spend 3 years doing, honestly?

Why does a game that is just a complete rehash of previous installments with a couple extra doo-dads even worth playing? Not innovative, sorry excuse for a story, and mediocre single player at best. Sure, the multiplayer is great, but it does not make up for its short comings. The reviews this game is getting are obviously just to keep advertising revenue from Microsoft.

The gameplay lacks any true mechanics and the multiply, although good, seems to fall short compared to its xbox live counterparts. don't be taken by the hype, this game is mediocre at best.

Halo 3 is one of the most engaging and ingenious games I've ever played. Right off the bat I was blown away by the colorful landscape and amazing graphics. The achievements for finding skulls and replaying the campaign on harder difficulties had me playing it forever. Even when all of that was done, the online experience is nothing short of amazing. I've been a Bungie fan for years (since Pathways) and I'm pretty certain this is the worst Bungie game I've ever played. Halo 3 is essentially Halo 2 running at a higher resolution with some pretty water effects. The storyline remains generic, the characters don't flesh out, and it retains the gameplay of Halo and Halo 2 without adding anything new to the franchise. Humans have upwards of 100 degree field of view, so why is it that Master Chief has a fov of around 60? This is such a problem I have with this game, it's like handicapping the player. You are essentially playing the game with tunnel vision. Haven't the game designers ever played DOOM before? DOOM has around 90 fov, and DOOM wasn't even WIDESCREEN. I've heard somewhere that the low fov is because it means less rendering for the console, and therefore, more fps. If that's true, that means the game designers were thinking like this: Graphics come first, THEN gameplay. That's just flat out wrong. If you're playing a new computer game on an old computer, you turn down the GRAPHICS so you can play the game, you don't play the game for the graphics, that's just nonsense. It literally made me stop playing the game for a couple of days because it was just not fun to play.

There are some other graphics and sound problems I have but they PALE in comparison to this problem, so I won't mention them. Even the crosshair isn't even as much of an issue with this unrealistic fov. In regards to gameplay, I still wish they left the guns from Halo CE alone. I'm tired of changing guns every 5 seconds to suit the situation. The AR-grenade-melee system was just perfect. Yeah they made the melee a whole heck of a lot better (and more useful!), but the grenades are now useless, you don't even get as many of them anymore. The guns are not nearly as overpowered as Halo 1, but that was part of it's appeal. Yeah ripping Heavy Machine Guns off their tri-pods is one of the coolest shooter mechanics I've seen since ADS, but I'd still rather go into a fight with the MA5B, (and FOUR frag grenades).

I love Halo 1, absolute God-send of video games. Buying the Anniversary Edition only made me remember this.

Halo 3 is the best in the franchise, multiplayer and campaign both. Halo reach was the catalyst for bad halo. An abomination both lore wise, and multiplayer wise.

Absolute joke that this is lower than that trash game. Clowns have no idea what halo stood for. Reach destroyed everything halo was. WTF is sprint doing in a halo game? Armor abilities? Really? A button that literally makes you invincible, while you get somebody one shot and they slam armor lock, and his friend finishes you off while he sits in his little invincible state. That is not good halo.

Unreal to me that people think so highly of reach. I guess it's a case of a bunch of casuals. Casuals that dont understand the deeper mechanics of halo/ in other words, scrubs and noobs. Halo was turned into a game even your 40 year old mother could play.

Heres hoping halo infinite can drag halo out of the mud and return it to its former glory.

meanwhile, halo 3 is the best halo game. halo 2 is meh and unfinished tbh. but still decent. halo 3 just fixed everything halo 2 came up short on. thats what good sequels do, see. What reach did was akin to self destructing.

Halo 3 is my third favorite game of all time because, it is enjoyable experience, its fun to play with your friends, and it has one of the best campaign I've ever seen, so why if you haven't played this game yet. buy it. I still play this game to the date and its still fun to play. oh if you a cod player and you don't like this game, you have no variety.

To utter a term coined by one Yahtzee Croshaw, (who I normally adamantly disagree with) This game is a spunk gargle wee wee. Not only is there little to no chance of dying, because just hide til your shields replenish, there are no real threats in the game. The title itself looks more like halo 2 than a next gen title like it was, the physics are really screwed up, picking a turret up slows you down but you still jump like their is reduced gravity. The storyline wasn't as good as the predecessors, This game was designed for the 13 year old kids to get a headshot and then talk crap to series gamers. I'd say get this game only to see what needs to be changed in the new games coming out. Once again its up to us to change the industry, buying a 59.99 expansion like madden 15, or Halo 5, just isn't something I'm willing to do. Some argue the online for this game is what defines it. Unfortunately for me, online isn't what makes a game, the play, story, and characters make the game. Expand

Awesome game, kept me at the edge of my seat, introduced new game changing forge mode, and once again reinforced Xbox superiority over PC and PlayStation. The reason it's not a 10/10 for me is because it wasn't as big a leap forward from halo 2, as halo 2 was from halo 1. Still a leap forward though!

What did I think of the story?

I wish the Halo Story did more for me but I just can't get into it. It's okay and there certainly is an attempt but I just don't care what's going on with the story. The sad truth is, Bungie doesn't do a great making me care about any of the characters. So what's going on narratively doesn't have much weight.

    Favorite Character?

Master Chief? I don't know, no one really.

    How are the Puzzles?

Halo is not really known for Puzzles.

What is the gameplay like and how does it feel?

The shooting feels good, that is one that the one that Bungie does very well. The shooting is very well done.

    How are the missions/levels designed?

This is my biggest complaint about the entire game. Often times you're often times backtracking through the same part. So the mission starts and you start at point A, go to point B and instead of going to point A. You go back through to point A. Then maybe you go to point C. Then to point D and then back to point C. Backtracking is lazy level design in my opinion rather than designing something new, you can keep the same assets.

What is my favorite moment or sequence from the game?

There was a plot twist involving the Guilty Spark that did surprise. For most of the game, the narrative wasn't doing much for me but that moment did draw me and make me ask the question, what is going on here?

    Was it fun?

Yes, despite the okay level design and okay story the game is fun to play. That is in large part thanks to the combat and specifically the gunplay. It just feels good to shoot enemies regardless if its the covenant or the flood.

How is the sound design and music?

The one thing that I don't quite understand about this game is the music. I'll be in the middle of a fight and then all of a sudden the music will start playing. I don't quite understand what triggers the music. Now granted its very good when it's playing, I just don't quite understand why it starts.

First off, you can’t understand all of the plot without reading a book, which is not how games should be made. If you can’t understand everything that’s in a game during the game’s run time, that part should be cut or included in another way. There were too many questions I had about the story of this game for this to go unmentioned.

Second, there were big spikes in difficulty that were surprising. You’d wander through an area full of big, tough enemies and get to the next and it’s, like, three grunts. Odd. Not game-breaking, and still an interesting game (and series) to experience, but odd.

Finally, even after multiple Halos, I’m still getting lost in the levels. A consistent objective marker is such a key quality of life feature, but this game only turns on the marker for the more difficult locations. That’s great, but I’m such a moron that I needed it more often, ha.

The ending was something you could have seen coming a while ago (or, at least, I did), although I think maybe I’ve played too many action games lately, if I’m starting to get a sense for the plots. Time to switch genres.

I thought we were past days where people would just look at the default campaign settings for the basis of a review. There is SO much here for your money. The game's story is pretty much a backdrop for the missions and does help the games flow, but is by no means essential for enjoyment. It's fair to say there is nothing radically different about Halo 3's campaign mode. If I thought we were past days where people would just look at the default campaign settings for the basis of a review. There is SO much here for your money. It's fair to say there is nothing radically different about Halo 3's campaign mode. If you didn't like the others, you probably won't like this. However, play it on heroic or above and you'll see what a finely balanced, intense and rewarding combat experiance it is. This is Halo at it's purest, most finely tuned level. I've found that most people who rank this game low has either played through it on normal (the "Wal-Mart crowd" setting) or has not delved into multiplayer, theatre mode or forge mode at all. Here is where the real meat is brought to the table. Theatre should soon become a standard amongst all multiplayer FPS games. RTS players have for some time now, treated match replays as gospel for improving their skills. Now FPS players have that chance aswell. By watching matches in which you did particularly well (or badly) you can definatly improve your game. For example, I have watched the early replays of my online games to learn which "weapon run" I should take from each spawn point, making it easier to get tooled up after I get killed. My only gripe at this is that there is no easy way to get your videos played back on a computer without hooking up your Xbox to a PC with screengrabbing software. Finally, Forge succesfully combines a sandbox game with a level editor. Everyone can have fun in forge. Seriously, my wife hates FPS games, but after a bit of nagging I got her to try forge. We spent hours on there mucking around in The Pit, creating piles of explosive crates, driving vehicles up walls, corpsehumping each other, it was awesome. There is no other way such a staunch opponent of FPS games could have enjoyed Halo 3 apart from like this. It's a breath of fresh air that the FPS genre really needs. Expand

For me, this is rare, and only ever really experienced before with Half Life 1 & 2, Knights of the Old Republic and Final Fantasy VII. The only reason this didn't get a 10 is because as the 3rd game in a trilogy, some of the story is a little hard to follow for those who haven't played or failed to complete Halos 1 & 2. (I made sure I looked at the plot overview on Wikipedia for these so that I wasn't confused or lost by the plot). The online multiplayer also seems very good, although I have only just started playing. It does seem a lot more balanced than the Halo 2 multiplayer, which I dabbled with but didn't like half as much, (mainly due to the sheer number of people taking advantage of what I now know are button glitches). Halo 3 is way to good for humanity. It's awesome campaign really made me feel good about myself. The A.I are extremely intelligent. Way more advanced then any other FPS, except Bioshocks. I think this came takes the (Pie.) Way to go Bungie.

One of the greatest games of ALL time. Loved everything about it. I've been waiting for a game that will make me want to keep my 360 and my god here it is. Not a big fan of the end but it doesnt matter that much.

Halo3 has suffered from too much media-hype and spin but we shouldn't let this detract from what is and excellent FPS. Yes the campaign is flawed and at times baffeling but the rich environments, engadging AI and range of enemies make the single player deserving of much more credit than it's been given. The multiplayer is everything I expected and really does live up to expectations; the graphics, balance of weapons, levels, gameplay, game variants are all very well thought out. Bungie's community driven approach to the development of the multiplayer seems to have been the key to it's success - they truly have listened to what gamers wanted and responded in kind with a game that lovers of FPSs (and the Halo series) cannot fail to enjoy. Halo3 is a landmark in FPS multiplayers that really does improve on classics such as the N64's Goldeneye and Perfect Dark (yes it was actually good on the 64), we can only hope that more quality games, like this, are made - because I could do without another Harry Potter or GTA spin-off. Amazing game. Everything you loved about Halo and Halo2 is here and then some. It is amazing that one review site gave this a 7.0 rating. Obviously trying to stand out and get some action on his site.

I am shocked by the high reviews. I worries me that so many critics can't seem to justify their scores. The game is good; no doubt about that. Halo 3 was meant to be a defining FPS though, and on this count, it fails. Not enough has changed over Halo 2 in 3 years of development.

The graphics are pretty good and the story is nice, but the single player campaign is way too short. It took me just under 5 hours to beat it. Does have some replayability factor though, but it wasn't worth the hype.

Okay graphics, not as good as some FPS. Scripted campaign. You can't go everywhere like in some games. I felt like I was being led along. Same old Halo game play. Been there done that. Mediocre.

I for one don't accept the argument that the MP makes up for the poor single player. Its being hailed as such an immense achievement for the world of gaming. Shouldn't have to be excused for its poor story and game play because of all the 12 year olds that play it online What you really get when you buy this game is half of a game. Might as well save 30 bucks and buy Team Fortress 2 which is only a MP game. Expand

Halo 3 isn't great in a mindblowing way. It doesn't rock your world like Bioshock or Gears of War or Oblivion did when you first got your hands on them. It plays a lot like the previous games. On its own it is an acceptable game. Compared to Crysis, Orange box, Call of duty 4, it sucks. That is, the multiplayer. The singleplayer is much worse. If you are buying it for the multiplayer you might as well get COD4, Team fortress 2, or others. If you are getting it expecting a good singleplayer you must be drunk so it is possible you might enjoy it.

  1. It's the addition of the Forge level editor and the saved films that give the game an even longer set of legs, legs that will probably keep you running at full speed until Bungie figures out where, exactly, to go from here.
  2. Halo 3 is the best Xbox 360 game to date. The single-player campaign and storyline are both very strong, but it's Forge and the Saved Films features that will likely go down in history as Bungie's crowning achievements. They've basically taken everything great about the series and improved upon it in every way, then added some amazing new features that we'll be using for years to come.
  3. 100
It's solid gameplay, immense replayability, online functionality and incredible production values will ensure its place in video game history, and it is, without a doubt, a satisfying and fulfilling close to the beloved trilogy[?].
