A.I. is disappointing, and doesn't really provide and interesting fight. Overall the single-player campaign doesn't exemplify gripping pitch-perfect pacing as Half-Life 2 and often fails to deliver truly interesting action. However, this is a Halo game; it's the multiplayer that counts. Bungie has successfully added new elements to the online experience without ruining the Halo experience. Weapons are still pretty well balanced, and the majority of levels flow great (except a few badly designed ones... looking at you Snowbound) and each have a myriad of interesting strategies. Matchmaking is easy and smooth, and getting into a game with yourself, or some pals, is quick and painless. Overall, Halo is an online experience, and if you purchase the game with that in mind, you will not be disappointed. Expand

While still being interesting and fun you can't help but expect more from the series, especially in its final chapter. Needed more new aspects, Halo hasn't changed much from Halo 1 other than its graphics. Truly surprised to see the constant barrage of 100s its gotten.

This game was a HUGE disappointment with all of the hype surrounding it. It's just mediocre, Call of Duty 4 is infinitely better than this dreck. What's even more offensive is that screen shots were released of a level before this game came out. Perhaps it is, in single-player, a fairly conventional action shooter; but the combat is intense, visceral, and always excellent. However, it's the online aspect - the peerless multiplayer and, especially, features such as saved films and Forge - that will keep this game alive for years. The benchmark of online gaming.

Even though gamers were promised a truly epic tale that would be virtually impossible for any game to live up to, I think Halo 3 comes very close, not having bought into the hype and read anything about it before I bought it. Online play is excellent, game variants and maps, along with a constant supply of opponents keep it going for as long as you can.

While Halo 3 may not have the polished, efficient appeal of other shooters such as Call of Duty 4, Halo 3 has the soul that other games lack. Despite some obvious flaws in multiplayer gameplay, Halo 3 is the definitive FPS on the 360. And definitely my favorite.

Solid, well paced, and enganging single player (with up to 4 player co-op), coupled with an excellently supported Multiplayer raises this game to the top. Forge map alteration and a full on Single/Multiplayer movie playback only sweeten the deal. Must buy for 360 owners!

Some of the level design is terribly unintuitive, specifically the Cortana level. I found myself getting lost in several rooms and wandered around aimlessly for several minutes before I found out where I was supposed to be going.
The difficulty curve also varies drastically throughout the game. At some points near the beginning I died many times before I could move onto the next area. But as I progressed, it became increasingly easier to a point where it was too easy. The Flood only take 2-3 bashes to kill with just about any weapon. The "boss" fights are complete jokes, and the game ends with the easiest sequence in a game that I've ever played.

And as for the online multiplayer, I don't care about it. I don't play games online save for RTS games so I can't say if it's good or bad. But with what I have played, the game is decent. There are plenty of better FPS games out there that you can play. If you need to know how the story ends and you hate reading, play the game, otherwise read a plot synopsis and save yourself $60.

The campaign, however, was far too short. This is the greatest flaw of Halo 3. Minor technical issues were noted here and there, and the marines AI definently has its problems. It turned out to be nothing like I had expected. But several years later I let it get the best of me again. However, for whatever reason, I was not even remotely disappointed with this one. I expected there to be little alteration to the multiplayer. I was right, but everything that was changed, fixed 90% of the problems that I had with the multiplayer of the second. Then I got into the single player. At first, I was captivated. I was looking at the Chief in new shiny clothes and everything felt fresh. I played for a few hours and found, as expected, that the experience got a bit monotonous, but advancing the wrap-up to the story made the trip well worth it. I don't know how everyone else feels, but in my opinion that was a great finalization to the trilogy. And that ending was brilliant, I feel that while they finished off the saga, they could easily pick it back up again with a sequel or a prequel, whatever they feel would work. I feel like I am still playing H2 however. I know it's different, and I know that it handles a bit differently, but ultimately I was left with the feeling that I was playing H2 but with updates giving me new items. This may be a bit critical of me seeing as they are part of the same series and a totally different scheme would be outrageous, but maybe I was just expecting some of the things that I was hoping for from H2 that I never got. My other complaint would be that there is little to no character development here. I wanted to know more about Master Chief, and Sergeant Johnson, and learn more about Gravemind and the forerunners. Yet the only character I found any more depth into was Cortana. I know Bungie fully endorses the books as official pieces to the mythos. But this is Halo a game, not a series of books. I shouldn't have to read a book to know about the characters and the story behind this conflict. It should unfold throughout the game. And maybe that is what they hope to do with Halo Wars, and whatever new Halo games they plan to bring out. Expand

A predominantly multi-player experience makes this a poorly rounded experience. Well fleshed out online mechanics but with a community that rivals Runescape. Audio and visuals are great, but the uninteresting weapons, offensive community and ridiculous looking characters drag this game down.

I give this a 0 to balance out the score. This game is a 7/10 at best. All of you who give it a 10 are blind to the fact that Halo sucks and Bungie has been living off the hype of the original game (which only got hype because it was the first decent shooter on the original Xbox). They use this permanent fanboy fervor to allow them to make a game that has been the same since it's conception adding in only minor changes that have all been done in another game in some form or another to keep the critics at bay. I'm still disgusted that a magazine of Edges calibur gave this game the full 10/10. Expand

While I haven't played Halo 3, I've seen from gameplay videos on YouTube how the game plays out: no matter how fast you're moving or what you're doing to aim, pretty much something gets in your crosshair and you hold down the right trigger, or you just spam grenades. In my opinion, CS:S is much better than this game (though I prefer PC games over 360 games) because it has ways to balance out the multiplayer, I'm NOT going to include the singleplayer in this because I haven't played it, but what I'm reading here it's not all that good, but it adds a few points in that respect. Also, yes, this game IS over-hyped, again, in my opinion, Halo 1 was the best of the series because the singleplayer had a decent storyline, while the lack of multiplayer was really dissapointing, it was still a very origional singleplayer game. Halo 2 however, its story can only be described as PAINFUL. I played the Halo 2 singleplayer from beginning to end and it just... was horrible. I'm starting to stray here from a review of Halo 3 though, so back to the third installment. Yes Halo 3 contains the forge system and video playback, which is cool for everyone, I agree, and it does make the multiplayer more fun. Granted you can't do this with other multiplayer games such as CS:S or CoD4 don't include an editing system like this (for CS:S you have Source SDK, to my knowledge CoD4 has no editing engine, even on the PC) so it earns it a couple more points. Graphically the game is impressive, though it's pretty much just the Halo 1 graphics just alot more polished. Nothing wrong with that at all, it just means that the developers would rather spend a few days re-modeling an already-concepted weapon rather than recreate new weapons over the course of several weeks. All-in-all, this is a decent game, and fun to play with your friends. The only downside is that because of it's friendly atmosphere to children, you'll usually have to deal with screaming kids on Xbox Live, which knocks it down a few points. (Personally, I played multiplayer games before my voice deepened, and people were annoyed, but hell, all that matters is if you have fun or not, someone's voice should not annoy you if the game is good, my only trouble with it is if the kids start to actually SCREAM in frustration, which has happened to me before in other games.) Ending was alright, but still recognisable as a rehash of Halo 1 that was less enjoyable to do. Multiplayer's solid, it works well, and it's not unbalanced if you play normal MM. That's the reason I enjoy it - I can stop playing for 4 months, go back to it and there'll still be people at my level. it's not like CoD where if you buy the game two weeks late everyone's prestiged and you do nothing but die, which in itself makes it much more fun. What else... Graphics were good for its time, especially on a custom engine, but could do with some AA and decent reflections. Story sucked but made sense in that they had a limited timeframe to do it and cut quite a lot of stuff...yeah. Overall a decent game with strong MM but a very lacking campaign. Best part is probably the fact that there's always someone in MM at your level, so it doesn't matter whether you picked up the game on day one like me or the 2 year anniversary - there's still 500,000 people evenly matched for you to play. That alone is one of the reasons it's so popular and why I like it. Expand

The rest of the multiplayer is flawless. Controls and weapon systems are top notch, and battles are exciting. The gameplay requires a huge amount of skill, at least compared to most FPS's. I've played many of the FPS's that people always say are more skillful than Halo (Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament III, Team Fortress 2, Gears of War 2, Call of Duty Games, and a few older FPS's.) and Halo beats many of these by a large margin. I usually do well in matches and am considered and consider myself (atleast when I was good at Halo a while ago, before I started playing Fallout 3) a good Halo 3 player and I still run into many people who could easily destroy me. it is one of the best games i have played the forge mode adds the extra ability to change the map in your own desire. the only down fall is most of the play lists you have to by map packs just to play them but other than that a great game

First of all don't listen to these guys who give 0 - 4. Its far from the truth. All this stuff about how bad the campaign is and stuff is only "compared" to Halo 1 and 2. For an XBox360 it rules and is really good and multiplayer is about as fun as it gets. It is great and never gets boring. Buy the game.

Its clear to most people that halo 3 is a great game. People who claim it is overhyped are right, but thats not to say its not a great game, its like pretending a demi-god is a god ; It wont live up to what everyone expects, but its still pretty damn good. I have since played COD 4, 5 and UT, GOW2 and still I keep coming back to halo 3. People just need to shut up, forget what they think about a game seires or fanboys and just play the game. SP was so good i bought h2 + 1 to play the whole thing. The less "insta-kill" style of play does not make for a less skillful game, but allows a more team based TDM setup. If on COD I run around w/o talking to my team it makes little difference but on halo it will ensure you fall behind (unless in FFA). The MP is awesome. The game types are varied and interesting and every weeked there is double exp WITH A NEW GAMETYPE. Incredibly fun, better to play with friends than any other FPS, satisfying. Dont listen to the haters or the COD fanboys, this game is the best FPS on a next-gen console so far. Peace out. Expand

Anybody who knows anything about FPS or online shooters knows that Halo (entire trilogy) is among the most evolutionary and revolutionary shooters of all time. Anybody who gives this below a 9 is kidding themselves. This game is easily the best mulitplayer shooter of all time. By miles. I, personally, thought COD4 was garbage.

The campaign wasn't amazing but it was decent and quite fun to play through in co-op. While the single player is probably only worth a 7 alone, the multiplayer more than made up for it. I'd played it that much that other games never got a look in at the time. Looking forward to ODST now.

I rate this game 7, I rate 5 for The Single-Player which is full of action and very fun. I give the multiplayer 2, because sometimes, Playing with new people is very easy and playing with pros is very hard, there is no "good middle" and most people have the tendency of quitting the game too early, so it makes the game un-balanced.

This game deserves a solid 9. The multi-player, while lacking the strategy of a Tom Clancy title or the cover system of GOW, still stands above the competition. Theres nothing special about this game at all. its not on par with previous halo games. even the graphics are lacking for a game on a next gen console. there isn't a whole lot of variety and multiplayer is just generic shooter, it doesn't stand out with anything special at all.

I gave Halo 3 a six because it is mediocre at best. It is any other shooter, with aliens. I must admit, It has a damn good story, but It is only implemented in objectives, it doesn't make you feel like you are there. It is only good when bored and sick (only time I play it).

I decided to comment because of Peter A's deluded comments that were near the top of this list. His first complaint was with the lack of graphical improvements over Halo 2. I can assure you the graphics for Halo 3 have been refined extremely. Certainly, it uses the same engine, but play Halo 3 and then play Halo 2, and you will see amazing differences. His second complaint was that the multiplayer was too similar to Halo 2's multiplayer, which is funny to me because one of the single largest complaints in the Bungie community is regarding how DIFFERENT Halo 3's multiplayer is from Halo 2's. Certainly, they are based on the same premises and rules. However, the subtleties and dynamics have been altered dramatically. He references the sudden appearance of powerups, which have actually be a Halo staple since Halo: CE, which, if you'll recall, is the very first Halo game. That right there should be reason enough to have his comment removed and his vote disqualified. He obviously has no idea what game he's playing. As for adding Forge to Halo 2, it's not quite that simple. And it astounds me he didn't mention the theater mode, which is a milemarker in game development. I've also seen no mention of the depth to which the game is integrated with Bungie.Net. The bottom line is that I'm still playing this game almost daily two years after its launch. So are almost 1 million other gamers. That very fact that proves the longevity and replayablility of this game warrants a 9, in my opinion. The game isn't perfect, but it does what it does very well. And it's significant to the industry in terms of development. Expand

The right length for the casual gamer. Good selection in difficulty for all levels. Great blend of gameplay, graphics, and music. Online CO-OP iand online multiplayer action is great. The Theater allows for playback of recent games and clips to relive moments in the game as well as capture hi-res screenshots.

Halo 3 is exactly what one has come to expect from the Halo franchise: Amazing Multiplayer. Other than that, you really have nothing to write home about.

The main disappointment for me was that Halo 3 is Halo 2 with a single story arc and better graphics. Sure there are a few new mechanics that are neat, like detaching a turrent, but those really do not add to the flavor of the game.

Its still your basic FPS with no innovation and a story that still hurts my brain.

The mutliplayer is where the game shines. There is great variety in the map styles with halo, and each map can play basically any game type. The games are big, fast paced (usually), and entertaining. That is until you go online with the multiplayer. I like to think i am not counting the general persona found within the Halo community against the score of the game, as Bungie has no control over these people.

The addition of the Forge was a neat idea, but it seems to be a little less practical than one would hope. It works well when playing with friends, but the online applications are essentially lost. In contrast, the Theater feature is completely pointless. There is no need for me to invite my friend into a room and show him over and over and over and over the time i ran him over with the warthog and he started dry humping the rock he landed on.

To recap: Pointless single player, Cool multiplayer, and some new features that failed to hit the mark. IMO, you are better of with TF2.

  1. It's the addition of the Forge level editor and the saved films that give the game an even longer set of legs, legs that will probably keep you running at full speed until Bungie figures out where, exactly, to go from here.
  2. Halo 3 is the best Xbox 360 game to date. The single-player campaign and storyline are both very strong, but it's Forge and the Saved Films features that will likely go down in history as Bungie's crowning achievements. They've basically taken everything great about the series and improved upon it in every way, then added some amazing new features that we'll be using for years to come.
  3. 100
