In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to a small suburban town only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. He escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but. It will be a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players will have full reign of a realistic shopping center, utilizing anything they find to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic. Dead Rising features an open level of freedom and offers a vast array of gameplay possibilities. As part of a real time system, time is dynamic in Dead Rising, marching on whether Frank is actively engaged or if he is stationary. Time also plays a role as zombies become more powerful when the sun goes down. Though they move slowly during the day, the zombies become stronger and faster at night, making it even more dangerous for players to survive. The unprecedented numbers of enemies come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population of former humans that have retained some memory of their previous lives, which is reflected in their behavior and appearance. The variety of different stores in the mall offers players an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Players will also encounter other survivors along the way and by helping them can acquire valuable clues as to what has happened. Expand

The spaced out save points create a wonderfully rare sense of dread. You'll want to stock up on inventory and weapons before attempting a particularly difficult passage. And you're not always secure whether you're going to make it. This is where Dead Rising's sandbox zombie killing comes into its own.

Sometimes tense, sometimes hilarious, it's a must have for all 360 owners. [Issue #15]

While it does have some minor problems such as no multiplayer, a weird save system and repetitive missions sometimes, the game makes up for itself by being pure fun and insane. If you love slashing zombies in half and smashing zombie heads in, if you love a free roaming open ended story, and if you love video games, you’ll love Dead Rising.
  4. All in all, I absolutely loved this game. It's not without its flaws - the levelling up is, initially, a pain as Frank simply starts out too weak to be any use, but the size of the mall and the amount to do means that you will actually want to replay things until you get it right.
  5. The whole thing is simply great fun, a sort of malleable tour through the Dawn of the Dead films that clearly inspired the game. There’s a party in my Xbox 360, and all you zombies out there are invited.
  6. Though Dead Rising pulls its inspiration from the George Romero classic Dawn of the Dead, the expected hokiness of the plot and dialogue is surprisingly absent (same for any obvious social commentary).
  7. Like many zombie flicks in history, this is for a cult audience only. It's a genuine shame but it just isn't very good.

Every comment with a score below 5 seems to have missed the options screen where you can decide if aim follows character view or camera view Every comment with a score below 5 seems to have missed the options screen where you can decide if aim follows character view or camera view :) An excellent game. Completed it this morning, started right back from the start immediately. The deadlines are tight and the saves infrequent, but that just adds more adrenalin to an already tightly packed game. Fantastuic, definietly a must buy (and rtfm on the controls for extra pleasure! Expand

I will admit that is difficult at first, but when you start keep in mind that you will die, you won't finish everthing (at least at first), and you don't need to save everyone. Saving is a pain at first, but once you get stronger (and braver) the distances between save points seem shorter and shorter. And killing zombies with mannequin limbs is great fun. Expand

This game is probably the best zombie game I have ever played. The mall is like your sick fun house for you to run around have lots of gory fun. I have heared a lot of people shun this game for the timer it has. I think the timer is a good elememt and keeps the game at a fast but not too fast of a pace. The problem I have is the gun controls. That is the only reason this isnt a 10. The gun controls have got me killed and have caused me tk rage many times. But apart from that great game to have if this is your thing Expand

I put the game down for a week or two, intending to trade it in. One day I decided to give it a fresh try. I guess the second time was the charm! It's pretty fun for what it is: a mostly plotless, fairly mindless zombie-killing festival. The gunplay still somewhat annoys me, but changing the directional setting to "aim in direction that camera is facing" rather than "direction that character is facing" helped. If you like zombies, grinding, over-the-top gore, and New Game as a feature, this might be a game for you. Really, though it's more like New Game given the amount of times you'll find yourself wanting to start from the beginning again. The save spots are few and far between. Often I have found myself forgetting to save after gaining a couple of levels, getting swarmed and dying only to be left having to choose between loading the last save and losing my progress or starting back at the beginning, but two levels higher and stronger than I was when I last saved. I recently ended up getting Dead Rising 2 from XBox Live On Demand as well as Dead Rising 2: Case Zero from Arcade, so I guess you could say I've seen the light and I'm now a believer! Expand
