He travels to a small suburban town in pursuit of a hot lead, only to find that it's been overrun with zombies. What a way to start an assignment. Frank heads for the local shopping mall, assuming that he'll be safe there, but the zombies have taken over the place. Now it's up to you to help Frank survive this onslaught of the undead, using everything you can find in the mall to help fight off the bloodthirsty mob and search for the truth behind this horrendous epidemic.

With an open, free environment, you'll be able to explore plenty of areas both inside and outside the mall. Zombies come in never-ending waves, so be prepared to use the endless supply of vehicles, makeshift weapons and more against these former humans. A real-time system means that key events happen at certain times, so you need to pay attention. You can even use Frank's photojournalistic skills to capture the mayhem on film for posterity -- if anyone is left, that is.

It hasn't aged well at all, and it's a sort of time capsule for late sixth/early seventh-generation design, but it still has a quiet intensity and sense of genuine dread that none of its more famous sequels even tried to match, and which in many ways stands alone in recent video game history. If you can come to grips with its relative user-unfriendliness, it's an experience worth having.

In 2006, Dead Rising's clever assembly of ideas rampaged against comfort and cohesion. Time has been kind to Dead Rising's sharp edge of nonconformity, though some of its quirks feel frustrating after two (and a half) sequels provided a better defense of its thesis.

Running at 1080p/60fps, the game's visual performance is solid with the occasional bump in the framerate. Capcom added a few more save slots and costumes to this version, but nothing more. The same ugly A.I. issues that plagued the original are still present. That means some frustrating moments await as you try to rescue survivors that are as dumb as rocks. They often end up zombie chow. The "race against the clock" nature of the game might be restricting, but it also encourages replays since you won't be able to do everything in one playthrough. Despite some of its issues, "Dead Rising" can be a lot of fun. it's still one of the best entries in the series. I would rate it with an 8 out of 10. Expand

The fact that the missions expire after a certain time, the development against the clock of the plot. I recognise that it's original, but it's not to my taste. I love slaughtering zombies as much as the next guy, but I prefer other types of games, like Dead Island or Resident Evil. I was deeply disappointed. I approve because technically the game is fine, it's impressive to see so many characters on screen. Besides, the fights against the psychopaths are motivating. For fans of games where you can be a hooligan and also have a prize. Expand
