    +Great, creative level design
+Nice change to the Mario formula
-Controls take a while to get use to
-Camera certainly does not help you out during gravity sections

The best three dimensional platformer in years, with stunning visuals and score, and classic Mario gmaeplay (Meaning fun as Hell.) If you own a Wii or Wii U, you owe it to yourself to pick this game up!

I've never been a fan of the galaxy games. I don't think this is the best Mario game ever, I don't like the starbit mechanic, and I don't think the orchestrated soundtrack. When I'm in the right mood, this is one of the best Mario games I've played. The music is probably my favorite part about it, but the game itself is still a blast, even years later. Some levels make me want to use regular controls at times, but overall, it's a fun game.

Excellent platforming with fresh 3D gravity ideas.

Flawless except for the repetitive "Marioooooooo" storyline and the meaningless Rosalina cutscenes.
2 points deduction therefore from an otherwise mechanically great platformer.

And in mario 64 you had open levels but this time you got smaller ones which are even more fun than 64's. However the motion controls fall flat. For example the surf levels THEY REALLY SUCK even with wii motion plus it was bad. But it is a rare thing. But the *snicker Ball sections are even worse Because again motion controls. But that is more common but then you have the bubble sections which don't suck. And sometimes they got real lazy with the levels. Like the first level in the engine room is just honey hive galaxy in reverse. Woo real effort 101! But if you look past all of that this game is really solid and for that it gets. 8.5/10 Expand

The trial galaxies are fun but are over quickly and the purple coins are painstakingly annoying to get. The atmosphere and soundtrack are incredible but there are many instances of stars that just do not feel gratifying to collect because of how easy they are. Ok, it's actually more of a spectator mode, but that leaves the multiplayer component to be near non-existent. - Graphics aren't exactly edge-breaking. They're nice enough though and create a fairy-tale atmosphere. - There's too much restrictions for the sake of balancing. It's much like a linear platform game without giving the players real room to be creative, there's usually only one way to beat the game. - It's rather repetitive. The gameplay might be rather innovating, but the rest of the game is old. There are also a lot of positive points, but they're easy enough to find... My main concern is the very limited usage of the wii functions, which leaves me to conclude a good 7 is high enough for this game. Expand

If you are looking for a game to play casually after a long day this game offers plenty of fun but I just can't understand how it is considered one of the best games of all time. The game certainly isn't bad but it is very simplistic. The gameplay is solid and the game has a lot of charm but in most areas it is average. I find it strange that people dock games like Zelda or Final Fantasy points when their stories falter a bit but Mario gets a pass despite its story being a random mess. Most platformers aren't exactly known for their story telling but even among platformers Mario Galaxy's story and progression is below average.

The gameplay is really good in most areas, the mechanics are simple and responsive. Menus are simple and functional. There are quite a good variety of puzzles and challenges to solve but they didn't really seem to offer meaningful discoveries. The reward for completing challenges is really just more of the same, other games do a much better job of giving the player collectibles that actually impact gameplay in a way that enhances the experience. There are some really cool game mechanics but some of the best ones are limited to specific areas which made the game feel more like a collection of mini-games. While almost everything works well the game doesn't offer as much freedom as many of the best platformers.

The Visuals are fun and colorful but they aren't really groundbreaking in any way, it doesn't look much better than Mario Sunshine looked and they certainly don't stack up with a lot of games that came out around the same time. I don't expect Mario to look realistic of course but it still needs more creative visual designs in order to merit a high score.

The music and sound design if fine but nothing ground breaking Mario makes his typical sounds. The soundtrack is fitting enough but none of the songs really stood out to me as being exceptional.

The world is really cool, with many planets of varying designs. I found the mechanics of the planets themselves to be one of the most appealing aspects of the game and reaching new worlds almost always offered something new and interesting. I think the idea of mini-planets could have been used in more creative ways. While there is a decent amount of variety there is also a lot of repetition.

Overall I think Mario Galaxy is a good game and it is worth playing. There is a lot of content and most of it is enjoyable but it is no where near being one of the best games of all time.

This game is very infuriating due too difficulty and the camera angles. The camera is the only thing that holds this game back. This game has arguably the best graphics on the Wii. The graphics are also terrible, with pixelated textures and blurry visuals that make it difficult to even see what's going on. The sound effects are equally grating, with annoying music and sound effects that will make your ears bleed.

The game's storyline is also nonsensical and pointless, with Mario inexplicably floating around in space for no apparent reason. The game also lacks any sense of progression or challenge, with levels that are either too easy or too frustratingly difficult.

Overall, Super Mario Galaxy is a total waste of time and money. The game's poor design, clunky controls, terrible graphics, and nonsensical storyline make it a game that no one should bother playing. Save your money and invest in something better.

I do miss the old platformers...this game was extremely easy for me, and it is obvious that it was created for children. But why are we surprised? The wii is obviously for non-gamers, and taking this under consideration, this is a decent game. If you are a gamer this game is not for you, and neither is the console.

The soundtrack is also very good and the Luma creatures are nothing short of adorable. However, I maintain that this game does nothing to bring platform gaming into the seventh-generation and its shortcomings are probably a symptom of the the datedness of the said genre. The last platform games I honestly enjoyed were Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Rayman 2. Expand

Mario 64 had awesome powerups, worlds that were incredible and unique (the clock world, the cavern world, the big and small world...) and exploring these areas was half the fun. Galaxy almost entirely strips away the fun of exploration. Everything about this game is so straightforward. Nearly every power up is only placed under certain circumstances to be used in a certain way. To give an example, you'll only get the fireflower (yeah the brought it back, but it sucks) when you need to burn a couple of torches. You'll only get the spring suit when you must bounce to higher areas. Gone are the days when you could get a flying cap to sail around the stage, or a fireflower to just burn some enemies. The worlds are also not nearly as immersive, partially do to the linear gameply, but can also be attributed to the fact that most of them can be entirely walked around in a minute. They're that small, and lack cohesion as many of the worlds are actually a series of smaller planets. Expand

What happened in here? This game is so wrong, too few levels and when they are easy, literally, THEY ARE VERY EASY, but they want them to be hard... OMG THEY ARE VERY, VERY HARD. I haven't been as disappointed in a game in my life.

    Pros:
+ Soundtrack: Overrated, but... decent. Also, not that memorable aside from Gusty Garden (which is the only song that I loved from the game).

    Mix:
= Level Design: "OdYSsEY hAsS ThE WoRSTESt LEveL DesSIGN!!11!11" Galaxy ALMOST has the worst level design due to the copy-paste levels (Honeyhive and Gold Leaf Galaxy), but Sunshine's Beach + Random thing theme seemed to make it worse.

    Cons:
    - Gameplay: "GALAXY HAS THE BESTEST GAMEPLAY" Shut up Galaxy fanboys! If spinning pleases you so much, why don't you literally go do it right now? Also, the motion controls make me want to puke.
    - Story: I'm honestly putting this here mostly for the fanboys, but also due to the fact that I personally don't like Galaxy 1/2's stories that much.
    - Bosses: ...Copypasta the Game.

All in all, Super Mario Galaxy is not the best game of all time, nor is it the best Mario game of all time, and I personally would warrant it a 6.5/10. Also, shut up about Galaxy 3. (Also I didn't deduct any points because of the fanbase, I deducted because of actual issues I've had with the game).

First the mediocre gameplay is what got me, I experienced severe cases of boredom doing silly tasks such as launching yourself onto planets or flinging yourself towards shiny objects, while interactive, it is hard to find enjoyment out of tasks you are doing. What's worse is these tasks become repetitive over time, it's basically the same thing. You often have to re-visit annoying planets to perform different tasks. The action in this game is fairly basic, honestly I can't see much difference from 64 and Sunshine, maybe a less annoying combat system, instead of spin and crush have something unique, Mario is being re-used in the same way he just jumps on things. This isn't a big problem, the main aspect of this game is platforming, and the controls are sensitive, one wrong move and you've missed your target completely, this will happen countless times because the controls are messed up pretty bad. Now sometimes a good story can drive pretty mediocre gameplay, but sadly no, Galaxy is as every Mario game has been: Save the Princess. This lackluster creativity for a story is what makes the game worse. Most things in this game are pretty childish. There was some enjoyment but I was forcing myself through the game to see if it would improve. Mario Galaxy has to be one of the most overrated games in history, while most people give it perfect scores, they ignore the basic problems of this game, how it is just Mario 64 with space themes, how the controls fail or how the levels become tedious. People also forget Ratchet and Clank has used alot of the formulas that Nintendo have implemented in this game and Ratchet and Clank remains the superior title, mainly because you play as characters you actually like and it has a story that isn't for 6 year olds. When it comes to platforming, stick to some Naughty Dog titles and DON'T follow the reviews. There is no guaranteed enjoyment in this game. Only if you are a die hard SM64 fan that wants to see the same stuff re-used. Expand

Worse, this game is inferior to previous titles in the series - Mario 64 had a lot of exploration in it, but this game lacks that exploration aspect. You can't randomly go for other stars, and the stars aren't clever in any way. The worlds are sadly less interesting than the Mario 64 equivalents.

The much-vaunted planetary aspect SEEMS like it would be cool, but it almost always is actually a total letdown - almost all the planets with their gravity are lame, and only in a few places in the game can you actually do cool things with them, and I strongly suspect the team actually never intended for me to be able to do what is ACTUALLY fun with the gravity.

The game is also extremely easy - many modern games are very easy, but this game is exceedingly so. Bafflingly, it still has a lives system, despite the fact that it is utterly irrelevant - you have effectively infinite lives, and yet they remain in the game for no good reason. Moreover, it is so easy you are never going to game over.

The central staging area is also less enjoyable than what has been present in other games - in this game, the central staging area is like the levels, boring. In Mario 64, the castle was an interesting place to explore in its own right, being its own "level" of sorts with its own secrets, but the spaceship is just a boring place without interesting places to put its levels, and you progress through it in a very linear and not very interesting fashion.

Perhaps the biggest letdown is the repetitive worlds - there is one world which shows up twice, and it was only okay the first time. The second time, it is simply tedious and uninteresting. Other sections of the game are a bit overly repetitive as well.

While there are some fun areas in the game, most of it is just boring and not clever, and the game is actually worse than Mario 64, a game a decade older in the same series.

This game is greatly overrated. I'd recommend against purchasing it.

Super Mario galaxy opts to be a more simple game than previous instalments in the series to appeal to a wider and younger audience. Gone are the open world style levels and complex mechanical movement based systems found Super Mario 64 and Sunshine. Levels are now linear and less engaging, Mario’s movement is exceedingly simplified and sluggish, and the puzzles are easier than they’ve ever been before. This is great for young or casual players, but loses the essence of what originally made 3D Mario great. While I appreciate the developers attempt at creating a diverse world, I find that the lack of consistency in theming detracts from the immersion, causing the world to feel un-relatable and “video gamey” to a fault. Additionally, while the idea behind having an all orchestral soundtrack is neat, the music in many instances falls flat or feels out of place which is uncharacteristic for Nintendo games. In my opinion the Galaxy series has some of the most forgettable music amongst prolific Nintendo games from their era. As a whole Super Mario galaxy succeeds at being a simple 3D Mario game that appeals to a general audience. However, it fails to bring many of the most successful core features that had defined the series thus far, let alone innovate on them. While I think Super Mario Galaxy has its place, I hope that it is the only time Nintendo deviates from the direction the series had previously been in with 64 and Sunshine, and gone back to with Super Mario Odyssey. At the core of Super Mario Galaxy is its gameplay, which seamlessly blends platforming mechanics with gravity-altering mechanics. Each galaxy presents a unique and imaginative environment where Mario must navigate treacherous landscapes and overcome gravity-defying obstacles. The level design is nothing short of brilliance, offering a perfect balance of challenge and accessibility. The precise controls and responsive motion controls of the Wii Remote make Mario's movements feel intuitive and satisfying. From gravity-flipping puzzles to exhilarating comet challenges, every moment is a delight for players of all skill levels.

The game's motifs and themes are infused with a sense of wonder and discovery. The concept of exploring different galaxies, each with its own distinct theme and challenges, sparks the imagination and keeps players eagerly anticipating what lies beyond. From lush grassy worlds to fiery volcanic realms and even surreal dreamscapes, the game offers a stunning variety of environments. Nintendo's attention to detail is commendable, as each galaxy is meticulously crafted with vibrant colors, whimsical architecture, and imaginative inhabitants, bringing the game's universe to life.

Accompanying the stunning visuals is an unforgettable musical score. Composed by the legendary Koji Kondo and Mahito Yokota, the soundtrack elevates the game to new heights. The orchestral arrangements perfectly capture the game's sense of grandeur and evoke a range of emotions. From the sweeping orchestral melodies of the main theme to the playful tunes that accompany each galaxy, the music enhances the overall experience, creating a magical atmosphere that immerses players in Mario's cosmic journey.

Furthermore, Super Mario Galaxy's replayability is exceptional. With over 120 stars to collect and hidden secrets to uncover, the game offers a wealth of content to keep players engaged long after the main story is complete. The addition of the Co-Star mode, where a second player can assist Mario on his journey, adds a cooperative element that enhances the multiplayer experience.

Great to look at, might be amazing for younger players. Anyone 20+ will get bored along the way. When is Nintendo going to try something different? Mario 64 in space is not original.

This rainbow colored whack-a-mole style game with little depth, but a lot of attitude. It might make a good stocking stuffer for the younger Wii owners.

I played this game for about 2 hours and then booted crysis back up! i usually like this style of game but this just failed to engage me.

i pride myself on having as little bias as possible and i think this is fanboy overhype, it should stop so people like me with no platform/series preference arent dissapointed.

yours regretfully (for wasting my money) david.

I don't know why this game is so loved it just an overrated piece of crap. Sure the game looks nice I wish I could say the same for the gameplay its so broken. I'm a long time Mario fan all the way from Super Mario Bros (NES) to Mario 64. This game just doesn't cut it. 1) It's really easy. I beat the third bowser in about ten hours or so and hardly ever died. 2) It's really repetitive; nearly the entire game focuses on the gravity based physics of jumping from planet to planet. Maybe it's more fun if you play while dropping acid? 3) Since whenI'm a long time Mario fan all the way from Super Mario Bros (NES) to Mario 64. This game just doesn't cut it. 1) It's really easy. The space where it was possible to move always seemed to be very small. Almost felt like a converted 2d game. Constantly dealing with gravity wasnt a great move either, it kind of ruined the experience. I wasnt a great fan of the motion control either, felt very duckt taped and gimmicky. The setting in space didnt really appeal to me, it didnt have the Mario feeling to it. The green grass, castles and trees is just much more fitting. The graphics left much to wish for, but it wasnt much they could do with that hardware. It does look significantly better on dolphin emulator with upscaling and some minor graphic tweaks. An OK game, but Id rather see a full blown remake of Mario 64 with 1080p resolution.

Its not a bad game, but its the Galaxy instalment is by far the worst in the series. I was a sceptic to Mario Sunshine when it came, but after playing this I realize how much better it was. Its obvious that the new and younger crowd loved this game. I hope that they some day get the chance to play Mario 64 and see how much better it can be.

[OBJECTIVE QUALITY REVIEW] The controls with the planetary movement just had little if any heart put into them - they simply don't work well when upside down. They should just keep moving in the same direction when GOING upside down and then work 'normally' when ALREADY upside down. Also, the graphics, despite looking realistic, and admittedly even more so than Odyssey's, aren't the best either. Also, and especially considering the aforementioned controls, some challenges of the galaxies in the game are punishing, rather than difficult - because they either require unnecessary amounts of precision, or just simple leave you with no real choice or direction on how to deal with them, at least not right-off-the-bat. Overall, as a result of all of this, the only real reason to get engaged in this game in the long run is completing the main game - the post-game is just boring, tedious, and frustrating to deal with as a whole. Fans that rate this game high should try out other galaxy-style games and compare them, and maybe they'll find the latter objectively better than the former. What a shame. Expand

It was fun as a kid but we arent 10 years old now. We should move on mediocrity and have our own criticial look at the games. And this one of the most mindnubingly boring game nintendo have ever developed. None of the ideas are actually fun to experience and nothing about the level designs is engaging

Not only that, but Nintendo's definition of "replay value" is forcing you to play though the game twice if you want to see a little bit more content. At least Nintendo's Zelda games inject originality and storyline into each one; there's definite quirks to each. You could look at any given screenshot and tell which Zelda you're looking at. Not so with Mario; it's just business as usual. Rent this game if you must, but a few hours into it, you'll realize that you've been had yet again by the Mario team. Expand

I love platformers and i really looked forward 2 this game but its no ratchet. if this game had better graphics and much better art direction (that transported you to amazing worlds like platformers are supposed to), if the camera was better and the planetoids and swimming levels were all gone and replaced with fun levels that used the motion controls, Galaxy could have been a great game. It's rare to play through a perfect game or one that nears perfection, but Galaxy definitely fits that mold.

Nintendo has crafted a platform game that, while not as technologically pioneering as its grandfather, is, level for level, more fun to play than "Mario 64." [Dec 2007, p.128]

Galaxy proves that Mario matters just as much today as he did 25 years ago, and that makes him one of a kind in this medium. But don't play Galaxy simply because Mario is the timeless godfather of gaming. No, play Galaxy because it's fantastic.
