Being a dye-in-the-wool Nintendo fan, I have always enjoyed the new Mario titles that seem to be the stalwart of the franchise. I spent way too many hours of my life playing the original Super Mario Bros. (plus sequels), as well as Super Mario World for the SNES. Then, as with most people, Super Mario '64 absolutely blew me away with its 3-D graphic interface. However, I was disappointed in the Gamecube effort Super Mario Sunshine, which just didn't seem to have the right "Mario feel" to it. Super Mario Galaxy, however, brought me back into the Mario "universe" (excuse the pun) big time!

The controls and premise of this game harkens back to the revolutionary Mario '64, in which players must collect stars (or, in this case, star creatures) in a variety of different ways. The graphics are pristine, the cut scenes are fun, and the controls are easy to pick up and play.

Though panned as being a "kids game", Mario Galaxy offers something for both the beginning and advanced gamers. By collecting 70 of the 120 total stars (a task that is by no means impossible), Bowser can be defeated and effectively "end" the game. However, more advanced games can shoot for the full 120 stars and see the "true" ending.

Overall, this game is another success in the long line of the Mario franchise. After mixed reviews for Mario Sunshine, Nintendo went back to the basics in this game and created a masterpiece. I'm looking forward to the next installment (rumored to be a sequel to this game?!).

This game is just outstanding. It has a very nicely executed story, some very creative areas to explore, a decent cast of characters for a Mario game, interesting gameplay mechanics and a majestic soundtrack. You can go to Bowser with only 60 stars, and easily miss the rest of the game. The final level is almost as easy as automatic levels in Mario Maker. The Comet Observatory, while beautiful, is just way too big, taking very long to go to the domes. It feels weird to have 6 save files. And to play as Luigi, you have to play the entire game all over again. But the game is still amazing, and you will enjoy it a lot. Expand

After the masterpiece of Mario Sunshine they make another amazing hit! The motion controls actually work very well! The only problem with the game is probably the enemies. The enemies to me (not the bosses) aren't so great I mean they're decent but they have flaws. Anyways fantastic game!

Super Mario Galaxy is beautiful in every way possible. Unique level design utilising gravity in new ways, incredible music, new and exciting boss fights, fun as hell puzzles, and the themes are really innovative. Nintendo should continue with innovating with the themes and worlds like this game.

Super Mario Galaxy has got an fabulous graphic with awesome, different planet designs and galaxy backgrounds. The graphic was everytime fresh and sometimes really beautiful. The whole gameplay is great fun. There are lots of different galaxie's to explore with many missions: You have to find someone, find a star, fight a boss, finish a parcour in a special time limit, pass a level with just one life or have epic battles with Shadow-Mario. There wasn't any place where it was really boring. The difficulty level could be one of the contra points. Yes, there were really hard missions and there were places on which you could just rampage. But the whole game wasn't really hard with a few exceptions. So in my opinion it could be a little bit harder and it would be perfect.

What I don't like in the game is the Luigi game. After you collected all stars with Mario you have to play the whole game another time with Luigi to get the 100% and to play the final level. That's a bit annoying but they've made it better in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Speaking of the story. I know, it's a mario game. Mario games doesn't really need story to work very well. Of course who doesn't love a good, inspiring story but that's the big mystery. Mario is fascinating with his gameplay so well, that we need no story. But here in Super Mario Galaxy we even got some story. The beginning of the game is really epic and spectaculary, but after this not much was happening. Only the ending was really phenomenal with emotional scenes and and epic finish. So there was and awesome start and ending and that is really enough. It doesn't need more.

The soundtrack. THE SOUNDTRACK! If you don't know any Super Mario Galaxy themes, go now to YouTube, write "Super Mario Galaxy Top 20 Soundtracks" and just listen. Koji Kondo is a genius and he proved it another time in this game. The music evokes so many great emotions that are always on point matched to the galaxy. I've got gooseflesh by hearing some of this music. From rich beatufil, to rich dangerous, to rich majesctic, to rich epic. Yes, the music was everytime rich because of that awesome live-orchestra!

Summarizing Super Mario Galaxy is a great experience and if you got the possibility-play it. Awesome level-design, nice graphic and music not from this world. It's a game you can play often and just start your adventure from the beginning again.

The graphics weren't the best, but the music made up for it by being so freakishly catchy. Same story as always though. Peach gets captured by Bowser and it's Mario's job to save her. Collect all stars to do the whole thing again with Luigi; I'm at 118 right now; Luigi's Purple Coins is too hard. Eventually you'll get all stars with Luigi as well. What do you get? The original score truly gives the game its stellar and incredible atmosphere all along. There are a lot of easter eggs making 'Super Mario Galaxy' an unavoidable must-play on the Wii console and especially in the whole Mario catalog.

Perspective is for me the major flaw of the game since the Wii controllers don't always allow you to move easily. In some levels jumps and flying moments can quickly become frustrating and overly difficult. And God knows that controlling your jumps becomes crucial when you finally reach the end of the game.

Music-wise, it's my favorite of the Mario series, with grand notes that are on par with the grander scale of the game, compared to so far in the series, and very fitting thematically as well.
The gameplay is very enjoyable, although the gravity can feel a bit floaty and sluggish, which might be by design, however I do prefer the springier-feeling Mario movement from other titles. Overall though it creates for disorienting platforming, but in the best way I can muster, as the camera is capable of keeping up with most bizarre scenarios that this game can dish out while still being manageable to surpass them.
Overall, a must-play on the Wii, and even more-so on emulators, if you have a decent machine that can uprender it to look and sound even better than on the original hardware.

Incredible Mario game and really memorable. With the new concept, Nintendo creates a game mechanic that will blow your mind to play this game with many fun additions. Level design and mechanics are extremely varied and inventive which always keep you immersed throughout, along with a familiar, yet incredibly executed narrative and the best narrative I’ve seen in a 3D Mario game to date. Only real issues revolve around some awkward camera angles at times, especially underwater which aren’t ideal but don’t weigh down the overall experience. I would’ve also liked to have seen some mechanics return more often and be taken further but that seems to be asking too much for what’s been produced here. Galaxy is easily one of Nintendo's finest games ever when it comes to creativity and fun density. The creativity with which some of these galaxies are created is mindboggling. Especially some of the galaxies where you're at the mercy of gravity are insane fun to play.

This goes from small spheres where you run around in a matter of seconds or 2D sequences where gravity works in all directions and can be changed by arrows. There are some levels that require motion control such as a race with a manta ray or piloting Mario who's standing on a glass ball. It took me several tries to beat these levels, but they are generally quite short and not that challenging. T

he nature of Galaxy's levels has changed considerably. The exploratory level design of Sunshine and Mario 64 is now gone in favour of a more linear level design. This augments the creativity of level design and you get a better camera control.

When it comes to controls they are as responsive as you can expect in a Mario game. After all these years we know that the motion controls are more of a gimmick than anything else, but they work superbly in Galaxy. Galaxy was also the first time Nintendo used an orchestra for recording the music and Nintendo delivered. Just listen to the music in Gusty Garden Galaxy and the music is half the fun of this level. Other tracks are also crowdpleasers, but some of them have a dip in quality. Especially the levels with the bees have rather lacklustre music.

Super Mario Galaxy is without a doubt a masterpiece, but has some cons here and there. It's rather easy and some of the prankster comets feel like recycling previous levels. In these levels you race against a shadow Mario, carry out a speed run of a previous level, collect one hundred purple coins or need to beat a boss with one life. These are the more hardcore aspects of Galaxy, but also more frustrating as they can be time-consuming where lifes are easily lost. Even after all these years Galaxy remains the second best 3D platformer after Super Mario Galaxy 2.

It also doesn't have to open ended levels that the previous games have but for me mario was kind of meant to be linear. I also want to say that the levels are inventive. The developers put in their best efforts in the galaxy games in my opinion rather than even games like mario odyssey. However there are a few things I don't like about the game. It has a bad spring power up, it also lets the second player troll the first player and it doesn't help that there's not much to do as player 2. While I thought the final battle was good, I felt like it was a bit of a repeat of the other bowser battles but then again it was like that in 64 as well. Lastly I used to hate the song that plays when you go to roselina's library but now I like it. It's ok to cry. Expand

Like Super Mario 64 did, Super Mario Galaxy has defined (yet again) 3D movements in open space, adding a twist to the already perfect formula.
The game takes an old approach: like in Mario 64, starting in a tutorial-like area, and then letting the player choose the level and the objective he wants to accomplish, and like Mario 64, there is no need to complete all of them.

The game takes an old approach: like in Mario 64, starting in a tutorial-like area, and then letting the player choose the level and the objective he wants to accomplish, and like Mario 64, there is no need to complete all of them.
What is new though is the level design. Each level is built around the concept of gravity. The first level, for example, has a small world that can be circumnavigated in a few seconds, and to advance to the next part, we need to jump high enough to get attracted to the gravity of the very next world.
The entire game is built around this concept and how to manipulate it to your advantage, which makes it very fun to experiment new ways to complete a level, often leading the player in finding secrets.
Mario also has different new power-ups like the ice flower, which let Mario walk on water ad freeze enemies; or the bee mushroom, which let him fly for a brief period and lean on flowers.
The songs of Super Mario Galaxy are incredible, not only do they fit every level, but are performed by an entire orchestra, making them a blessing for your ears.
The boss fight is quite the show. The player will face giant foes generated by baby bowser to stop him. Each one of them is different, but all of them are entertaining.
Super Mario Galaxy has demonstrated that there are yet so many ideas left off videogames, and it reminded us what having fun really is.

The other best aspect of the game is the magical vibe, with every world you explore giving a different vibe than the next. The emotion you feel is different and the music you get can either make you feel lonely but in awe, or it can leave you dancing along with penguins in a random snow mission.

The only tiny gripe I have with this game is the lack of movement options there are compared to the rest of the Mario series. But the game is still fun, the game is still wondrous, and the game is still one of the best games ever released.

The levels are incredible and the 3D platforming is taken to the next level with the use of gravity, seeing Mario floating between little planets is just amazing and so much fun!

Very simple to complete and the randomness of the extra starts you are able to maintain was just frustrating cause the comet would disappear if you dont get into it right away and the 100 coins is such a downer especially when you are near 99 or 98 coins and you die... Fun and worthwhile but probably a game I could play once after I beat it which was like a day or 2

While a solid 3D platformer overall, in many ways I felt this was inferior to Super Mario 64, and, let's face it, it really IS Super Mario 64 with a new coat of paint, new levels, and a few other things. Like Super Mario 64, you run around 3D worlds looking for stars. Unlike Super Mario 64, there isn't much "looking" - where the stars are is obvious, and the levels are far, far more linear than those of its predecessor. This is a major strike against the game, as part of the fun of Super Mario 64 was the exploration. While it was neat how much the levels changed, it really wasn't neat how linear the levels were, and the "hidden stars" were not hidden at all, save in the sense of not being able to look at them on the initial screen (which was, in fact, worse than Super Mario 64, where the title of each star would give you a hint as to where it was - in this game, they show you, but they won't show you some stars, both destroying the mystery AND upping the annoyance factor... well, it would, if the stars weren't really obvious, anyway). The loss of the castle was the biggest bit of lameness - the central staging area to go to the worlds was very lame, as there were no stars hidden there at all, unlike the very cool castle from Super Mario 64. The other issues with this game were its controls and its camera. The controls were pretty similar to those of Super Mario 64, and were mostly fine. The exception, however, came in conjunction with the camera. Down should be down, and yet, oftentimes, you are walking on the walls or ceiling relative to the camera, as well as in various other awkward positions. This is incredibly annoying, as suddenly your controls are reversed or otherwise strange. If you're running around a round planet, how about having the camera follow me? The loss of camera control in many sections of the game is also annoying. The biggest upside of the game were the comets - they put a twist on the worlds. Unfortunately, many of these were just repeats. Overall, the game had a lot of repetitive elements in it - one world is just a mirrored, palette-swapped version of an earlier one, and several stars are not new stars but rather old ones you have to redo either in a limited amount of time or with only one hit point. The game was fun, but it had some issues which made it worse than Mario 64. If you liked Mario 64, you'll enjoy this, but it just isn't up to the level of its predecessor. Expand

Super Mario Galaxy is a very fun game for the Wii, but it does not deserve to be the #1 game. The two player mode is horrible, but Super Mario Galaxy is extremely fun for a single player.
