Although it wasn't the most complete Soul Calibur game I've ever played, the Wii controls, the multiplayer modes, and the storyline make it worth playing for fans of the series.
-
Play MagazineThere's certainly potential here, albeit squandered (in my opinion) on the Wii where like so many of its games, the hook--waving the Wiimote--is more curse than cool. [Dec 2007, p.81]
-
While it doesn’t do anything criminal it also fails to do more than coast by on its laurels. The motion controls work better than any other game of this type and the visuals, while not stunning, are technically proficient and impressive.
-
Games Master UKA disappointingly ordinary action adventure from an otherwise superb series. [Feb 2008, p.60]
-
Nintendo PowerIt's too bad, though, that the game feels like it would have worked better as a side mode than as a full game (think Devil Within from Tekken 5). [Holiday 2007, p.86]
-
Siegfried, the game's first playable character, ends battles by stating: "Damn, you're wasting my time!" Most players will feel the same way about this one.
-
Soul Calibur Legends isn’t a particularly bad game, but it does absolutely nothing to separate itself from the piles of generic action games on the market.
-
At last, Namco Bandai tells the legend behind Soul Calibur with a long and funny game which has also a bad approach due to an unlucky linear gameplay, very simple visuals and a dangerous lack of variety. Soulcalibur Legends isn't as good as its predecessors but it's still an enjoyable and interesting "beat 'em up" fighting game.
-
The main problem here is that it feels like Legends should have been a side mode in a proper Soulcalibur rather than its own game. There are some good ideas, but it doesn't feel like a complete game.
-
It's Soulcalibur if it were a repetitive hack-and-slash endeavor without many of the fighters that fans adore. Die-hards may be compelled to play for the unlockables, but if you've never played Soulcalibur before, don't start now.
-
Occasional boss fights and tacked-on multiplayer/co-op modes do very little to liven things up. It's worth a rental, but it's hardly the stuff of Legends.
-
Soulcalibur Legends does offer some solid hack-'n-slash gaming that'll also make for a nice Wii tech demo to show your non-gaming friends and family over the holidays. But in the end, the title's appeal will likely expire before that half-drunk carton of egg nog sitting in your fridge.
-
It's got little to offer for SoulCalibur fans, little to offer for hack-and-slash fans, and little to offer in the realm of gameplay substance.
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyControls aside, almost every aspect of Legends feels dated. [Jan 2008, p.82]
-
Soulcalibur: Legends offers some unique ideas and could have been a great step for the Soul Calibur franchise, but as it stands now, the game doesn't feel complete.
-
The controls are well done; it’s just this novelty can’t keep an otherwise horrible game afloat.
-
I'm really f'ing sick of developers throwing Wii gamers crappy titles with familiar logos slapped on the front of the box. Yeah, it sells games, but it also demeans their entire franchise that they built from the ground up.
-
This is essentially just a side quest in the series, and it feels like it cannot stand on its own. There needs to be much more polish on a game than developers put in.
-
Legends isn't a horror of a game. It's just a game that wouldn't have been greenlighted on the PS2 trying to cash in on the Wii's popularity and gullible gift-buyers.
-
It's a shame the length, boring presentation, and sub par visuals won't convince anyone but the hardcore audience to even give this sword a swipe.
-
Re-tuning Soulcalibur’s weapons combat for hack-and-slash duty is a great idea, but Legends just doesn’t have the chops to hold the attention of hardcore adventurers for long. Moreover, fighting gamers are just left out in the cold, although Soulcalibur fans may be driven to sate their curiosity.
-
Here’s a better idea, though: Find a cheap used copy of Soulcalibur II for the Gamecube and play that on the Wii. It’s the fighting game that you expect Soulcalibur to be, it’s a deeper game, and hey… it’s got Link.
-
Interesting motion controls can not save this action title from its poor graphics and presentation to its even worse gameplay. A total disappointment from a development team that is capable of so much more.
-
n-Revolution Magazine UKThis is not what we expected from Soul Calibur's Wii debut. What a misguided step for Namco's revered series. [Issue#19, p.72]
-
Official Nintendo Magazine UKA mindless slog that not even devoted fans will play through. [Oct 2008, p.98]
-
In the end, this game tries to evoke the fun and charm of Soul Calibur and backs it up with the signature Renaissance-era style and operatic music, but the mostly text-based story and dull, tiresome combat with the same few enemies over and over really make this pretty much a cheap cash-in.
-
This repetitious trudge is nothing to do with Soul Calibur beyond some character skins, and should be avoided unless you want to lose the will to live. [Feb 2008, p.52]
-
Fans of the series will definitely be let down with this Wii exclusive title, but players are better suited to play any later Dynasty Warriors title to get a better gaming experience.
-
Soul Calibur Legends isn’t a horrible game; it just doesn’t add anything exciting or new to a third person action adventure genre. It’s over relatively fast and it feels more like an unlockable to the original Soul Calibur than a standalone full priced videogame.
-
Soulcalibur Legends is a trap, luring in gullible gamers with the promise of two-player co-op and a cast of characters from the series. Once you take the bait, the whole rusty contraption snaps shut – and you will carry the scars of playing it for the rest of your life.
-
GameProBetter yet, just avoid it altogether. [Feb 2008, p.74]
-
A revered series takes a nosedive in this embarrassing, tedious excuse for an action game.
-
Edge MagazineAn unrewarding trudge that doesn’t have any ideas beyond the most primitive. [Feb 2008, p.97]
-
The graphics are bland and stiff, the story is an absolute joke (the ending particularly so) and whatever depth the levelling system might offer requires acres of patience to unearth.
-
Legends imply greatness; but Soul Calibur Legends is only the greatest loser -- a throwaway hack-and-slash action game. Unattractive, lacking depth, and generally not fun, this dull blade can't parry its long list of flaws with anything worthwhile.
