When you see a lot of 10 scores - and then some 0's and some 1's - you know those 0's and 1's are just a bunch of trolling. Like there is no way anyone with a brain would see this game and really give it anything less than a 7. I would like to see what games they give a 10. You can completely dismiss the 0's. Those people don't understand what a great game is.

My only complaints are the text is small on the screen - for like missions and stuff.
And I like to use the classic controller pro - but that means to fast travel, I need to have the gamepad near me. I need to move my charge stand now. Whatever - not much of a complaint.

This game may be limited it some ways, but the things it does well, it does better than almost any other game. The world is one of the most stunning ever created. The battle system is deep and even though you need to look past some things if you are new to xenoblade or japanese Rpg's as a whole. the game still deserves praise for what it bringa to the table.

If you are looking for a game that baby's you and holds your hand like so many RPG's of this generation have done, then this game is NOT for you.
This game is designed for truly hard-core RPG players, who love to dig deep into the mechanics of a game to pull out new levels of strength that the average player will be baffled over, and want to aspire to.

Xenoblade X is probably one of the first games to come out this gen that goes almost entirely hands-off in terms of hand-holding; from the very start of the game, you're free to wander the world as you please and take whatever path you can find to your goals, even if said paths often end up with you being eaten alive by something you didn't expect.

The most that the game will do, is give you access to a VERY extensive manual, and a few Splash pages to explain general functions at the relevant times.
Other than that, the game leaves the player to their own devices.

Some might find this to be off-putting compared to the level of hand-holding they're used to in other RPG's that have become popular this gen, like Fallout and Witcher, while others will remember this just as fondly as they did the classic RPG's of the old days, when exploration was key to self-improvement and the games were not afraid of being hard on their players if they took steps into areas their builds and stats just weren't ready for.
The difference here is, you can actually circumvent many of those would-be choke points, IF you are clever enough to discover the path around them.
And once you get a flying Skell, this game suddenly takes the term "See that mountain? You can go there." quite literally, allowing you to basically explore every last nook and cranny of every land mass in the game.

For exploration nuts, this is literally one of the best games they can buy on the market; each and every continent is filled to bursting with secrets and challenges to find and overcome, and despite the hardware not being at the same level as other consoles, the visuals are gorgeous and the music is atmospheric in every sense of the word. [outside of the rap, possibly]

The mechanics are deep, and those who love micro-managing and min-maxing their stats and gear will find an experience that rewards their tenacity with God-like levels of power.
But even for those that do not, simply keeping their gear, classes, and levels up to date will allow them to progress and enjoy what the game has to offer.

Despite all of these things, the game is not perfect.
The following points are subject to opinion, but the music is hit and miss, and the lack of volume sliders and Japanese dubs with English subs may be a turn-off to certain gamers.
If there's anything truly wrong with the game, objectively, it's that you have to go out into the city to find party members that aren't currently with you, and that there is no way of tracking the locations of Collectipedia items. [But then again, that's what the internet and guides are for.]

But in the end, these small flaws do not do enough to mar the experience to any significant extent, and that's why my final rating for this game is a full 10.

If you don't own a Wii U and you've been looking for a game that takes exploration to new heights [literally], then you owe it to yourself to get the system and this game.

I played the game for around 40 hours now and it is breathtaking !
It's giant, fully open world and immersive.
The gameplay is awesome, the soundtrack georgeous and the graphics spectacular.
Oh yeah, the game also runs totally smooth and apparently has no bugs.
The loading times are also extremly short.
For me it is definitely game of the year.

This game does so much wrong while having the best ideas at heart that it really makes me sad and pissed of at the same time.

    The Setting
Humans stranded on a planet, facing wildlife and xenos and trying to survive. That is a great setting. But why do we only exploit the planet for resources and scout it? Why not build new Settlements so that the player does not have to spend all his time in the same city? Build Settlements, expand them by scouting out the areas around it. Soo many possibilities....

    The Player
Granted I am only at Chapter 9 at the moment but so far the actual character you play made NO DIFFERENCE to the story. It would have gone that way even if your character never existed. And we getting monologues from Elma that she has in her head?! Why do we have a muted idiotic puppet that does nothing? I would rather play Elma who actually does make a difference in the story. Yeah I know some people like making their own characters. But it is not worth it if the character ends up being mute and does NOTHING!

    Party Lineup
Horrible!! You almost always have to take Lin and Elma. Why even give you other characters? Even on side missions they are very often mandatory! So while this happens the game throws 10 or 15 other characters at you that you could take with you but never get the chance to. Se even if they had a great story and wear great characters, which most of them are not, they remain a mistery because you can never do anything with them! Also whats the point in making you run around and recruit people once you convinced them to work together?! Why not have them in the reserves list all the time?! Do less other playable characters and make them more recognizable more special.

    The Sound.
Horrible, just horrible. This would be enough to say about it, but here is why: Loud music with lyrics plays while people are talking. The soundtracks themselves are repetitive and horrible! You almost don'T want to engage in combat because you are afraid that you ears might start to puke. And why give an alien species a voice that hurts your ears?

I've been looking forward to this game since it's announcement, and I'm happy to say that it didn't disappoint. Not only is it a fun and deep RPG, but it also acts as one of the largest and most beautiful games on the Wii U thus far. No, it's not perfect, but I think that the positives ultimately outweigh the negatives.

First off, I want to address my favorite thing about the game: the battle system. When I was watching gameplay for this game, I wasn't sure how it would work having not played Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii, but it quickly became the most addictive part of the game for me. It actually reminded me of a MOBA more than a traditional RPG, with the presence of cool-down abilities and real-time combat, and for a company like Nintendo to incorporate these ideas into their games is great. The combat it fast and frenetic, and the size and speed of some creatures makes every victory in the later game feel earned.

This game is WEIRD. From the character creation options to the music to the dialog to even the character and monster design, this game is clearly proud to be Japanese. You'll have a much more fun experience if you remember this, and in a world of Call of Duty and Battlefield (games so American it hurts), it's nice to see that Nintendo hasn't forgotten it's roots.

Now for the not-so great: this game suffers from what I like to call, "The Wii U Curse." Basicly, the fact that this game doesn't do much to utilize the Gamepad as much as it could have. This problem has plagued Nintendo from the beginning, with games like Nintendo Land and ZombiU using the Gamepad the best at launch. But it's sad that Nintendo hasn't learned from this, especially with Minecraft: Wii U Edition and, of course, this game. This game also suffers from being too vague in it's presentation, with seemingly important details like party management and the battle system being either poorly explained or not explained at all.

There's one thing that made me the most excited for this game, and that's the inclusion of mecha A.K.A. Skells. So it's a shame that you have to play so far into the game to actually get the chance to pilot on of them, and when you do it's proceeded by easily the most boring quest in the game. But once you get your Skell, it causes the game to open up, and truly shows the scope of the world. Remember those giant creatures you previously just ran by? Now you can fight them on their level. But this addition doesn't make the rest of the game a cakewalk. You still have to fight with strategy and logic to win, and the battles just get harder as the game progresses.

All in all, Xenoblade Chronicles X is not only one of the best RPGs of the year, but one of the most unique as well. While it's weirdness can't surpass Metal Gear Solid's, it still manages to be ridiculous and charming in places. And it shows that the Wii U is still fighting, still clinging to the lifeline of first-party games. This is a game you shouldn't ignore.

    Overall Score: 8.3/10

    Now for the brief review.

Interesting Sci-fi setting. After war between two alien races Earth is destroid and with project Exodus, humans scape with use of ships to try to find habitable planets. They are track down by one of the Alien races and crashland on an unknown planet. Humanity fid thenselves trying to survive in this new planet, dealing with all sorts of problematic situations. The game instigate the player to think about why the Aliens were in war, why one of these hat humanity and want us dead. Is this all due to a higher cause? was it just a sad accident and they are just destructive beings?

The world is GORGEOUS, best art direction I ever saw in a game. Nothing can match to the beaty and mystery of planet Mira.

Gameplay is sharp. Great improvement of the original Xenoblade chronicles gameplay premises.

Battle is fast-paced and can be very strategic with the player is like the ones who likes to master RPG's battle systems. It has the best of the action battles but without losing the strategy factor of turn based.

Skells work impressively well. They prove how much optimization and programming skills can do wonders even with hardware limitations. See the whole world while flying in the skeel is fantastic. They contribute well to the sci-fi vibe. Give a nice feel of empowerment.

Music is quite original in some instancies. More lyrics than other games usually do. Some fantastic track like Codename Z, Uncontrollable, Noctilum day theme, Sylvalum night theme, and the very original Ma-non airship theme.

Game will not teach you the most complex systems in detail but what the game teachs you is enough for you to work the rest if you are a dedicated RPG player.

Affinity quests and Normal quests are as important and Story quests to build up setting, world and character development.

A great start to what hopefully will yield a trilogy, but this time, different from xenosaga, will be able to convey the full vison of the game director.

But don't let anyone scare you from getting this game- its freaking amazing! Any Wii U owners would understand how awesome this game is! The BEST RPG on WII U today without any question! So here is how I scored this game in these following categories -

Story - 9 - The story is great! Also, love the customization to pick your character and who you want traveling with you on your team for missions! You get to pick and choose your class at the beginning of the game! The missions are fun and entertaining and provide you with the backdrop as to how you landed in Mira (planet)

Game play - 9.5 - Action RPG but with special Art skills to trigger various attacks, armor, and etc.

Graphics 10 - Most AMAZING game on the WII U by FAR! The best graphics on the WII-U! I would put it close if not better than most PS4 games! It looks very AWESOME - Think AVATAR!

Sound - 9 - I think the sound is great. People have said that the music is terrible. At parts it gets old but its not as terrible as everyone is making it out to be. You can turn down the volume if its annoying but actually hate RAP, and Dubstep but that's only certain parts of the game not the entire.

Controls - 9.5 - You get to utilize the ENTIRE WII U Gamepad! Totally understand how they utilized the Wii U gamepad! Meaning that when you set up your probes and things on the screen you change it via gamepad and fast travel via the gamepad! Its AWESOME! Easy interface and pushing the run does get a little tiresome but otherwise I love using the gamepad with it!

    Overall - I am giving this is a 9.5/10

The problem with this game though is that for every good thing it does, there's a horrible decision that follows, making a vicious cycle for anyone trying to play it. Combat is very similar to an MMO, with the player only deciding on when to use special attacks and positioning. However that is almost ruined by the horrible camera angles that make seeing something you want to hit almost impossible on the larger units. The story is good but is severely bogged down by fetch quests, which the game doesn't even tell you where to go 90% of the time to find the items you're looking for. You almost have to have a device with the internet to look up where various items are or you'll never be able to find them. The world is massive and there's lots to do but the graphics are terrible and the pop-in, whether it be terrain or NPC's, is absolutely terrible and some of the worst I've seen in a long time on both fronts. I could go on and on with this game but you get the idea now. However the biggest take away I had from this whole thing was that it was fun. People who don't like MMO's though will not like this. Lots of grinding and the battle system is not very interactive. But I enjoy stuff like that so I had fun. You just wonder what this game could have been on another platform that could actually handle games like this, especially on the PC. As it stands, Xenoblade Chronicles X is just a middle of the road game that some people will like and certainly isn't that must have item for the system like Nintendo needed it to be. Still fun though Expand

I love this game. As an Anime fan, I think its cool that they picked up Hiroyuki Sawano for the music composition. He's behind the music of Anime like Attack on Titan and Kill La Kill. His tunes in the background set a sort of mood and personality goes along great with the cool Skell mechs fighting dinosaurs and aliens. From a Science fiction fan standpoint, there's some interesting Xeno lore stuff, a huge alien world to explore, friendly and hostile aliens races, and influences from all over the place. It has a Mass Effect vibe sometimes. The game also remembers that it's supposed to be fun, and can have a good sense of humor.

Gameplay has elements from both JRPGs and Western RPGs. The game really rewards tweaking your team to the battle system, and itemization micromanagement, like a JRPG, but quest structure is similar to an open world western RPG. The battle system borrows from the first Xenoblade Chronicles game, where you have the ability to stagger and then topple a target, but it's less boring due to the addition of the Soul Voice system, which encourages chain attacks with squad members. Skells come into the game right when this system starts to get a bit repetitive, and inject another healthy boost of fun.

From a technical standpoint, there are a little rough edges in presentation mostly, but it's overall amazing. There's hardly an actual error or glitch, but the choice to play music loudly in voiced cutscenes was a little dumb. As well as low res character models thrown up close to the camera at times. There's noticeable aliasing a lot, and pop in. On the other side of things, view distance is outstanding, load times are small, the world is seamless (no loading between zone borders), the world is HUGE, the art direction is consistent and immersive, there's some cool looking enemies, and the frame rate is nice and smooth in almost all cases.

As a full package, this is a great achievement of a game. Its amazing that this was possible on the Wii U.

The moment you pilot a skell for the first time is an awakening and keeps the game exciting for many, many more hours.

The art direction is something that deserves a ton of praise. This is by far the most beautiful Wii U game, and a game that would look right at home on any other current gen console. The design of the world is completely alien, yet feels realistic. There are always incredible sights to see and new areas to explore. Even when I got my first skell about 30 hrs in, I had only surveyed about 8% of the entire map, and hadn't even stepped foot into 2 of the 5 continents, Sylvalum and Cauldros.

This game is for any fan of RPG's, all your core elements are there, characters to level up, skills and abilities to acquire, team members to gain, and a story (although much more loose than the original Xenoblade Chronicles (XC)). XCX elevates what I loved about XC, which are sprawling, interactive worlds, with different species (indigens) on an alien world. This brings me to the main draw of this game. A huge, HUGE, sprawling world, that makes you actually feel like a pioneer of Earth as you traverse it. I am already about 15 hours in, and have only scouted about 20% of the first continent (there are 5 in all), and about 4% of another.

Gameplay is complex, requiring the use of the manual (I've not said that in a long time!), and tutorials in game are not much more than a quick combat run through, and then text based pop ups as you move forward through the story. Definitely read the manual. There are a tonne of things to do.

One area of contention with a lot of people is the music. I think this is down to taste. People know what works in an RPG, orchestrated, or even dance type music tends to be the theme, but in this game, it goes to full vocal rock/pop songs to hip hop/R&B type music (New LA seems to be the big bug bear with people), but I really don't mind it, I almost find the NLA music to be catchy in a corny way. But wait until you fight some Tyrants, I love the music in that!

Graphics are impressive for a Wii U, never have I heard my Wii U work as hard as when it's reading the disc to generating the stunning visuals in the game. The game's continents have incredible draw distances, and you only ever really notice the odd texture resolution issue when the disc has to work especially hard (e.g. ending a fight and going straight to a cut scene), but I'm being very picky there. Loading screens can feel long when they happen, but they happen so infrequently that you don't care - they only happen really when starting the game, and when quick travelling. If you run everywhere, you don't get a single cut scene unless you go inside a building!

Combat is good too, you can target specific areas on an indigen (legs, arms, specific weapons they have) and knock them out so they can't use that specific skill anymore. There's not much healing, this is mostly done through 'soul voices' which are commands that your team give to use specific arts and skills that will heal you a little. All characters get a gun, and a melee weapon, and you can switch between these at will.

You can set you 'role' at any time in the game, and swap freely. If you want to focus melee, you can, then switch to a class that favours ranged combat, or support. No worries. Your team mates are kept as the are though (but you can recruit anyone online to your team for periods of time too, to match your style).

This game won't appeal to those who want a fantasy, mystical, story driven game like XC, but for those who like expansive, immersive game worlds, with a vastly improved combat system, then XC2 is definitely for you, and certainly competes for the top spot for an open world game on a console.

Xenoblade is the best RPGs on the market right now. The world is truly epic, the characters are deep, and the combat is fluid and fast. The combat is deep, but accessible. A simple press of the button, and you can switch from a knife to a machine gun. You get to scroll through the selection of actions that range from healing your team mate, to using a big charge attack that will deal big damage. The monsters are plentiful and are they smart. I saw one enemy jump off a cliff from me, he went to get two of his friends, and they all ran away. Another enemy called for help when I was almost ready to defeat it. This shows the developers took a lot of time and care into creating this game.

The submissions can range from really short and easy, to extremely long and difficult. The harder missions of course are more important to the mission, so they will take longer and be harder. The controls are spot-on, the button layout feels right and the movement of the character never felt stiff or weighty. The controls felt natural and easy to master which gives the player a sense of power.

Even if you don't like RPGs, you might want to check out Xenoblade, the music is a good mixture of rock, techno, and symphony. The action is fast, fluid and the bosses are extremely hard, and of course, mechs! How can you not love a game with mechs in it. If you love hard games with a long campaign, (counting the side-quest, it can take over 300 hours to do everything( then this game is a must for you, and if you don't like games like this? The new COD is out, go play it instead, and leave us real gamers to this game.

While the characters, universe, and world are built in a manner that keeps us immersed and describe a plausible manner that humanity may live in such difficult times (which Earth being destroyed), and the story being great with some interesting twists,

It should be noted that this game falls in several UX aspects. The game throws way too much information to the player, giving only the digital game guide as the only readable way to get the information on the different mechanics.
It's also difficult to understand why on a console that's perfectly capable of that, the game doesn't use the GamePad to give a way for the player to note information about zones, item availables, monsters. It's especially sad, knowing the number of gathering quests you will have to do.

All taken, it's giving us a RPG that is taking risks by not getting to far of the current humanity, and giving us the information on the world in a really slow pace.
On the other side, there are too much UX mistakes, and some player may find themselve too lost to enjoy anything in this game. But for people who like exploring, great views, and RPG ? It's exceptional.

Fetch quests are complete BS, as you have to go forward blind and hope you stumble across what you need.
Monster balance is not so great. expect random one hit deaths.
Boss battles all use standard/ cheap mechanics to mimic difficulty. (invincible phases, adds everywhere, boss health bar refills, one hit kill attacks, etc.)
Nearly everything in the game moves glacially slow. From combat and leveling, to getting items to drop off from monsters. Items and Skell suits are ridiculously expensive. Prepare to grind endlessly.
You gain resources at regular intervals, but some sort of anti idle is in place to keep people from making credits while they sleep at night. why? Who the F knows.
Worst offense of all. NO SOUND OPTIONS. I liked the music at first, but hours into the game it really got under my skin. Poor game design. Needs to be fixed.

TLDR: This game gets a 6 from me just for the vastness of the open world and overall aesthetics. Xenoblade Chronicles X is a single player grindfest that wishes it could have been an MMO. The game has too many issues for me to rate it any higher.

A hollow JRPG with an identity crisis. Not quite a single player story spectacular like the first and not quite the MMO it tries so desperately to be.

Chronicles 1 is driven by the main cast's desire for revenge. X is driven by accepting "Story Missions" from a computer terminal whenever you get bored so long as you meet the requirements. Each story segment lasts about an hour up to the end of Chapter 9 (Of 12) where the difficulty suddenly spikes prolonging the game's climax through a series of battles for battles sake.

The online doesn't put you in direct competition with any other players nor does it allow you to experience the world of Xenoblade with them. You can recruit higher level players through the online portal to join your team and have them kill whatever it is you need to kill to progress or alternatively have them farm monsters for you to raise your own level which essentially breaks the game.

Your party is made up of your customisable character avatar which can be voiced by about 10 different people, top quality VAs, but the dialogue is limited to battle only and your character spectates the story and is mute throughout.

You are forced to use the same characters on repeat for all story missions. In between each story mission there is usually an affinity mission which simply serves as a sort of hurdle prior to the next chapter beginning. The affinity quests give you no insight into anything that's going on and simply serve as filler.

Normal side questing is as vague as "Gather 10 of [Item] from [Continent]". The game does not give you any map markers and nor does it tell you that each continent is divided up into regions, the likelihood of finding the item in each region or what time of day the item has a greater chance of spawning. The only way to complete these quests, IMO, is to buy the guide.

The shop interface and anything relating to your equipment/buying selling of anything is all pooled together and is not automatically filtered by your characters class. For each of the 4 active party members you have to manually filter the contents of each shop for each bit of equipment to save you trawling through about 300 items, 250 of which you can't get/equip.

The Wii U struggles and consistently reads from the disk which is very loud. The enemies and textures noticeably pop in, sometimes resulting in your party's death because a higher level mob will suddenly appear and aggro you.

The flying mechs are a nice addition but this isn't available until chapter 9 at which point you've seen/done just about everything you need to. The introduction of the flying mech does not tie in with any story progression nor does it really open up any additional areas worth seeing.

I could go on but realistically if you were to compare this to the first it just falls short on every front. I was really looking forward to it, and maybe that's why I've had such a disappointing experience in that my expectation was too high, but, I see this reviews in green below and think that they must be playing a completely different game.

can't even branch off to other characters because quests mandate their
use. And by time you finish the main quest, the rest of the characters
are under-leveled beyond belief. The only huge change up character is your own, but what if you don't want to play a different class and wanted someone else be a certain class? Sucks deal with it.)
    - EXP for members not on your team (Pull a Final Fantasy 13 or Pokemon, keep underplayed characters equally leveled via exp share. If the game is so hell bent on having you keep Elma and in as your main team. At least allow my other characters to be properly leveled for when I do actually get to use one of them.)
    - Skippable dialogue without skipping the entire spoken scene
    - Reserve Members / Swap Interface (There's a stinking slot for it and it's only used when forcibly adding characters to your party during quests, how about actually letting me not be forced to find my party members scattered around the city, or to save a friend's characters I'm paying for a set amount of time in the slot?)
    - Remove/Reduce Affinity requirements. (Or just remove Affinity in general, or better yet make it more like Persona's Social Link and actually have you talk and bond with your characters without any requirements to do so beforehand.)
    - No way to edit Sound/Music via Settings (Obnoxiously loud song being played during a cutscene? How about trying to actually hear a song during a fight but your character's screams are too loud to hear the actual song.)
    - Skells come in too late when you need better transportation early on (By time you have a Skell, about 3/4's of every region you've been at has been discovered. The time wasted traveling the world is huge, about hours worth of time. There can still be a skell's vehicle form available, just keep it in vehicle form only until chapter 6 when you get an actual Skell that does battle.)
    - Ditch the License Quests for the Skell in general ("IT'S NOT THAT SIMPLE." Yeah, why can't it be for game purposes? You make me go through stupid quests that have nothing do with owning a Skell. None of them are fun, meaningful, or have a point, they're just another chore to do. Or at least just offer, you know, an actual exam that teaches you how to use a Skell and save me the 2 hours of pointless questing.)
    - Survey Rates aren't tied to your Division (Actually give them a reason to exist. Do I want to explore unexplored areas and plant drones instead of fighting Tyrants? Give me the damm option, don't force me to do everything, I completely understand now why there was only offered 1 save file in other regions, when it's a requirement to have your survey rate up at least let me focus on a set of tasks I want to do and not force me to do everything..)
    - Rewards for quests suck (Seriously, there is practically no rewards or exp at all for most quests, why should I bother doing any of them?)
    - No profit for selling items (Almost all the monster drops sell for little then 100 credits, take note that most similar weapons/armor in the store sell for 100 times that. It's not even worth the time to clean out your inventory with all the weapons and armor you picked up.)
    - No option to speed up fights (A lot of RPG games offer this feature, it's no Auto attack button, but I feel like half the time I'm waiting for my skills to charge up so I can do any damage whatsoever. Allow me to press a button to increase the speed of the fight by twice, but able to toggle it on and off in battle.)
    - Co-Op Play (The game could at least allowed you to play the game with one other person. The loose online capabilities in this game don't make the game anymore fun, I'd love to actually interact and have fun playing this game with friends instead. This game is practically a MMO in everyway anyways.)
    - No way to Buy Probes (There such an important part of the game in order to complete tasks, get the most important resource in the game, and a lot of quests revolve around needs certain ones. To get them now is to hope to get them through RNG, their needs to be a better way to attain these, even offering only lvl 1 probes helps.)
    - Monsters being too overpowered and killing you in what is supposed to be very weak areas. ( Okay, I hear the same thing just go in a different part of the day. Cool. But by time you travel to a nearby location to change time and fast travel back/walk there it's the same time of day when the monster is there or there is another strong monster to take it's place. It's cool to have strong monsters mixed in the bunch, but when almost all of them are hostile and you need to get to a specific location for a

MUSIC: absolutely terrible hip hop does not belong in an RPG the song that plays in the city is ear shattering awful. and the worst part is there is no way to mute the music in this they couldn't be bothered to include music and sound sliders so you have loud terrible music playing while your trying to hear the characters talk there is no way to make it so speech is louder than everything else you will be needing sub titles on the whole game.

COMBAT: combat is a pain in the *** 1st there is NO lock on you can lock onto the monster but the cam will not follow it around meaning you have to constantly keep adjusting the cam while moving. You might think this isn't a big deal but it is when the prompt to heal (push B within the circle) comes up. You have literally one second to respond to this. Oh big deal i can do that you say? Yes but your either too busy fiddling with the cam or doing an action by the time it appears you will miss successfully doing it A LOT so expect to see that red FAIL text very often. What else is bad about combat is the AI is as dumb as a rock most of the time you just stand behind it and spam special skills and it's finished most of the time it won't even pay any mind to you or attack! The only time mobs start becoming dangerous is when your fighting a lot of them at once and that's very rarely.

THE OPEN WORLD: oh ahh big fancy gfx and the world looks gorgeous yes this is true and probably why all the other reviews give it high scores or are just wiiu fanboys. The world is big YES but it's also empty I mean there are a lot of mobs out there and I'll get to that in a minute but the world itself...is empty. You will get tired of seeing the same rock formations or mountain ranges which all use the same textures but that's not the worst part. On the map it will say an area is safe and will have low level mobs...well guess what it's lying! There are literally dozens of super high level monsters in these areas that will 1 shot kill you on sight. So just when you thought you have found a nice safe spot to grind BOOM put of nowhere a lvl 90 monster will swoop in and 1 shot you. This will happen A LOT no area is safe you will spend most of the game running for your life!

INTERFACE: I swear whoever designed this must have been taking drugs it is absolutely terrible you will spend hours flicking backwards and forwards from category inside category again and again while forced to listen to that terrible music. The devs actually thought it was a good idea to put categories inside more categories will guess what they are wrong! Is it better in the shop menus? Oh no it's worse you can only sell one item at a time the same goes with buying what brain dead moron thought of this we are not living in the 80's anymore rpg have involved! but not in this game!

EQUIPMENT: I just found a cool weapon in the field and it does way more dmg that my current one I am the right level to use it too awesome...than why can't I equip it? OH it turns out you can't equip everything in this you have to equip OLD weapons and lvl them up so you can use the more powerful ones later! That means swapping out weapons back and forth again and again so you can use the weapons from that company. Yes there are several companies in this and you can't use their weapons unless you raise their skills in using their weapons so forget about equipping that awesome sword you just found you have to go put your sh**ty sword that does sh***y dmg back in and lvl that up instead or go do mindless quests with crappy weapons to lvl the skills THAN you can equip your NEW sword!

NO HELP: Usually in modern rpg they walk you through the features it has but no not this game your just thrown right into the fold and have to guess (or read the manual) on how to do nearly everything. Do you want to read manuals? NO of course you don't they died out in the 90's!!

SHUT UP FFS!: Did i mention there are no music sliders? Well there are NO battle voice sliders either so you will constantly hear your companions talk constantly the WHOLE battle about how to attack, what skills they are using or other mindless chatter!

after i write this i will be selling the game back on ebay and I am now done with the xenoblade franchise.

Like its predecessor this game pushes the WiiU to its limits. Visually the game is punching above its weight. You can notice where a few concessions had to be made however. Alpha texture resolution can create uneven edges around objects. There are also instances of clipping where a car will pass right through your characters. Despite its few graphical shortcomings however; the game still manages to impress with its sheer artistry and scale. Speaking of scale its been estimated that Xenoblade X is larger than the worlds of the Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 combined. The Witcher 3 could fit in Xenoblade X three times while Fallout 4 could fit inside X's world 5 times.

The game doesn't hold your hand and it also doesn't pull any punches. The game can be difficult at times but has a decent curve. Some of the menus can be a bit dense and you aren't given a lot of explanation. If there was ever a game you wanted to read the manual or guide for? This is that game. Fortunately the game has a on disc manual that can be accessed from the gamepad. But it can also be rewarding to explore these menus on your own and learn how its systems work with one another.

You start the game by creating a character of your own. The options are fairly straightforward and get the job done. It is a bit disappointing that even after creating a character to your liking; your character is essentially a blank slate with no real personality to speak of. The story is intriguing though suffers from stiff presentation and dialogue at times. Some of the story missions unfortunately are gated behind side missions.

The biggest selling point of the game is getting your own mech (Skell). This doesn't happen until 30+ hours into the game but is rewarding once you do. Skells themselves offer different combat and traversal options including the ability to fly. However it comes at a cost. The Skells themselves are expensive and can be destroyed in combat. Replacing them isn't cheap either. In combat your Skell's equipment determines what arts you can use. However like attacking appendages of your enemies in ground combat? Enemies can also attack individual parts of your skell. Once you lose an arm or something, this can prevent you from using a specific art in that fight. So it is imperative to know when to use your skell and when to save it from destruction.

Overall Xenoblade X is a fantastic game that shouldn't be missed if you are a WiiU owner. The game offers hundreds of hours of content and is easily worth the $60.

    *****SPECIAL EDITION REVIEW*****
    ______________________________________

I would like to now take this time to review the special edition. The 120+ page artbook is beautiful. The pages are glossy with a varnish applied to certain images that really give it a premium quality finish. The special edition also comes with a matted art card which is very nice. My biggest gripe is with the soundtrack that is on the USB device. The tracks themselves are gated behind a form of DRM that has for some users locked their particular drive. So at the present it is little more than a paper weight. Its disappointing that Nintendo had to implement a form of DRM for a soundtrack we had already purchased in the special edition.

    - Possibly one of the slowest starts you can have to a game, with little to nothing explained in terms of game mechanics and the story intro is paper-thin. Here, read a 50-60 page manual and figure it out yourself. Any tips given to you will be in microscopic font.

    - Mediocre story. This is the biggest letdown compared to the first game. Your character doesn't have any soul, all he does is nod/shake his head. The other characters in the world are forgettable and have pretty poor voice acting (Lin and Elma for starters). There are only 12 story missions in this game, where you will have to piece together any interesting background through affinity and side missions.

    - MMO quest design. What I loved about the first game is how it felt like I was playing a book, navigating from zone to zone with a purpose. That feeling is gone here, as you're dumped into a quest hub in the 4th chapter and you proceed to complete fetch/grind quests until you reach the appropriate affinity/story level. Your given freedom to do as you please, but the quality in the quests brings me back to the WoW days.

    - Inconsistent soundtrack. There are some really dreadful tracks in this game, and unfortunately two of them are presented to you at the very beginning of the game in terms of NLA and the battle theme. You can escape one after a period of time, but that battle theme will be with you forever (crappy rap and all). However, there are also really great tunes as you start to explore the world and what it has to offer.

    - Forced party members and affinity requirements. You can't stick to a certain squad of members because some missions require a party member to be at a certain level. So you will be forced to rotate your characters to keep their levels up. This is an annoying grind tactic for those who won't be aware of this.

    - Skell takes too long to get and is hard to maintain. It will take you 30-40 hours to get into this hunk of machinery, and when you finally do, you will be paranoid about its maintenance so it doesn't break.

+ The world is gorgeous. This is the only reason why I will trudge through this game, and that's because I want to visit the areas this planet has to offer. The colors are vibrant, the monsters are life-like, and the day/night cycle brings diversity.

+ fun combat. Once you actually go through the manual, you'll realize the fluidity required to keep you on your toes during battles. It will get chaotic, but keep your arts leveled up and this shouldn't be a problem.

In the end, I will go through this game just because i've been waiting for it for 2 years and the world seems interesting, but this is definitely a step back from its predecessor.

I just write to compensate for the f*ckheads that punctuate with 0s games that haven't even played. Regarding the game, I've just played for 20 hours but I'm already in love. Awesome exploration, great designs and fun combat. It's also true that characters are shallow and the cutscenes awkward but it's really a great RPG. Truly unique and gorgeous! :)

Graphics: PS4 and Xbox One games cannot even compare to the beauty of this game. The anime-like visuals are extremely colorful and detailed that the real world just looks lame now. All the extra details put into the environment is amazing, and I find myself noticing new things every time I look at something.

Sound: Holy crap. The music. Where do I start? First of all, the music is composed by the same person that made music for Attack on Titan, and they did extremely well with this. Most of the game's music even has lyrics, and they don't get old! The battle themes hype you up, the continents themes get your ready to explore; it's all so great.

Gameplay: The only thing taken from the first game is the concept of the battle system. You have arts, and that's about the only thing that's the same. You must position yourself accordingly, manage the moves that use TP, and keep an eye on your secondary cooldowns. What really makes this great, however, is the Soul Voice system. You can change what your player character calls out to the others, and if you request a certain move and they do it, they get a certain boost. This applies to every character; not just you. Successfully performing Soul Voices as they are called out can start a chain of more... and then more. This is especially important because it is your main source of healing, since there is no dedicated healing class.

Other than battle, the focus on exploration is fantastic. I'm 40 hours into the game and most of what I've done is walk around aimlessly, but it's super fun. You don't feel like you're getting nothing accomplished, because discovering everything around you is reward enough.

Story: Obviously I will not reveal spoilers, but what I've seen so far is extremely gripping. The story isn't just in the main story quests, so if you want the most out of it, you'll want to do the affinity missions as well. If you love the game enough though, (Like I do!) you would want to do them anyway. Everything story related is voice acted, and it is done very well (Much like the first game, except less British). In all honesty, I was expecting the cliche "Aliens are invading Earth, oh no!" story, but I got something a lot better. Even with your custom made avatar, the story doesn't fall back.

I cannot stress this enough. If you do NOT have a WiiU, BUY ONE for this game! This is going to be my favorite game for a long, LONG time. Just like the first game, this is one of the best games I have ever played. If you are on the fence, just buy it! If you're already considering it, you're most likely an RPG fan and would love this.

The reviews of the game are often may be under 25 year old players who have spent the past few generations playing easy to beat games to the point that anything that requires effort is therefore too much to handle.

The setting of this game is on Mira however regardless of the name the actual setting is a state of confusion and the unknown. The reason why nothing is explained and it is difficult ton explore is just for that reason. Humanity is lost, scared and trapped on a unknown world where no one has any answers and your character must pull humanity up by your sheer will to progress almost alone. Once you understand that, everything begins to make sense.

The music is based on anime scenes. It really come alive during battles where the music matches every fight scene in any anime ever.
Lack of being led around by the hand is because no one knows whats going on.
Grinding is a complete pleasure. Gone are the days where you'd level farm in a tiny area. Now with the social connection option and the vast world when you grind you're advancing everything around you and getting to explore the world.

The game is huge with a ton of stuff to do although some may find it repetitive. The monsters are interesting and it looks great. Their is a real RPG element to the game and not the dumbed down excuses for RPG coming from AAAs of late which I find refreshing. The story is interesting if a little formulaic.

While he game has great graphics NPC pop-in is very bad at times, sometimes popping when they are right in front of you. A little more explanation on some elements would of been nice, if your new to Xenoblade word some of it may have you reaching for a guide on the net.

Two major issues are marring my game time however: music and overall translation.

I HATE the combat music to a point I take my earphones off or mute the game, which is the only way to do it as their is not way to turn off the music which just seems bizarre. What person had the idea to put load annoying lyrics over combat dialogue, but give no means to turn it off.

The translation port is terrible. At first I though it was just one outfit and a few terms had been changed so I did not think much of it, buy no. Many words and meaning have been changed and now some no longer make sense. Forced memes inserted into dialogue in an effort to look clever when it just looks dumb. Many outfits have been changed for no reason that I can see other than some offendotron on the translation team that seems to have gone through all the dialogue and graphics going, "This is problematic, that's problematic. Oww that very problematic, well that has to go." One of the outfits seem to have been changed into something that look like Mormons underwear... I'll take note to avoid this translation publisher in the future.

If you really like RPGs and are hungry for something other than current AAAs you will have fun here, just know that you are getting an inferior experience than the Japanese version.

Scale gets a new meaning as well as patience as it will take you the better part of 20-something hours to unlock your first Skell, an enormous mech that you - and your party - can control, changing the tide of many battles. It's at the 30 hour mark you will fully unlock the capability of your Skell when you take it to the skies.

Perhaps the strongest suit of Chronicles X is that it can still amaze you 20-hours in. While most games may have shown all of their colours, Chronicles X really starts to shine once you unlock your Skell, which is no easy feat. Reaching the point where you're able to partake the license can take awhile, and then you still need to do an eight piece optional quest in order to obtain your towering mech.

Getting back to fidelity, it's amazing just how much of it is rendered on the screen, it's simply overpowering at times when you reach a proper viewpoint to admire your surroundings. Just strolling about is something that can entertain you for hours, if you're beat from the tons of battles you have to partake in. In short, Chronicles X is a massively multiplayer online game, meant for those that want the scale from such games, but not the social aspect. Players are not forced to partake in multiplayer activities, but can still reap some of the benefits.

Just make sure that when you decide to boot Chronicles, you have a long stretch. It's not a game you can easily pick up and play for short bursts.

The progress gates are there to protect you from dying horribly. Though I wish there was something that could be done about where all of your party members are (they're listed on the map for where they are most of the time, but you have to add them all one by one). Probably the best thing I can say about this game is that it's the best of both worlds, the Combat system of Xenoblade Chronicles, and the mechs (under the name Skell) of Xenogears. A wonderful combination. I would also like to mention that the story seems fairly solid, some might find it contrived, but well.... it is kinda like a realistic anime type game... so there's not much of a surprise there. But this game doesn't need that story to be good, it has plenty of exploration and customization while having a decent enough story to keep you playing for hours on end!

Only real downside are the progress gates, which while protective, can also be annoying when you just want to get on with the story (chapter 4 requires you to have 15% explored on the main starting continent... it can take awhile just to do on its own).

Xenoblade Chronicles X is arguably Monolith Soft's most ambitious title to date and by far one of the biggest games on the Wii U in terms of scope, length and just how frigging huge the world is. However it is not without its faults along the way, and unfortunately there are quite a few.

Make no mistake, Xenoblade Chronicles X has the most amazing open world map I've ever seen, its vibrant, awe inspiring and the creatures that inhabit it are a sight to behold. It is so easy to get swamped by Planet Mira's natural beauty as you take time to appreciate the world and the impressive undertaking Monolith Soft has given us.

However the Beauty of the game does start to were thin when you notice the technical sacrifices needed to bring the game to the Wii U. For starters pop in is abound, even if you have the install data, as characters will appear when you get really close to them. Also despite the dynamic weather, the game's skybox stays static: That mean Mira's Moons and sun are constantly in a static position in the sky with day/night transitions so jarringly fast it's very immersion breaking.

    Gameplay:
Exploration is excellent, character movement never gets hindered allowing you to run across the landscapes at full speed. The combat is also pretty engaging too, it may come off as overwhelming at first but balancing between using special attacks, managing your team and positioning yourself for the right sort of attack. Unfortunately its the micromanaging of the rest of the game that holds it down, there's so many different features and menus in the game that aren't explained very well, and it's implementation is certainly going to be divisive for some players:

For one this is a true hardcore RPG fan's game, if you've been annoyed by some of your other games dumbing down their RPG mechanics, this is certainly the game for you. However its also a bit TOO heavily implemented into everything, as you have to micromanage resources from probes, your teams armour, passive skills, special abilities, what buffs they offer during battle, your class, what abilities should be upgraded, what weapons get expansions, and that's not even a third of what the game offers. Even worse is that a lot of these menus aren't very well explained which is certainly going to scare off those who can't find themselves committed to a game like this.

The music is also a very mixed bag of both incredible and terrible tunes. Lots of the exploration and action focused cutscene tunes are incredible and really show off Hiroyuki Sawano true talents. Unfortunately its the random battle music that really gets on my nerves ... it sucks, and the fact that it plays frequently just gets bothersome. There's also the issue during dialogue heavy scenes where the music is sometimes so overbearing that you can't hear the dialogue, and there's no option to adjust the music levels to remedy this unfortunately. For that I highly recommend keeping subtitles on.

Side Missions are also a very mixed bag too, sadly most of them resort to mundane fetch quests or kill target quests, and even worse for some boneheaded reason the game locks out Main Story Missions until you've at least cleared some quests and installed a certain number of Data Probes over Mira. It just feels like needless padding in a game that certainly doesn't need it, seeing as you're looking at about 70-80 hours on your first playthrough. However your milage may vary given the mixed nature of missions provided you can enjoy the game for what it is.

I really wanted to love this game, I've been waiting for it since 2013 when it was first announced, so I'm rather disappointed by so many small shortcomings that slowly buildup to even bigger issues that what we should have.

Still if you're a hardcore RPG fan looking to scratch that itch that's been missing from a lot of AAA releases as of late, I'd easily recommend this game to you no question. For anyone else though ... I'd consider renting it first before buying.

From the moment you enter the world and get a look at the size of the world, the size of all the monsters and the massive scale of the land, you'll be in awe. You'll be even more in shock when, as you explore, you come to realize that every place you see- from those massive mountains touching the sky to a distant hazy alien island you see that looms in the horizon- is all explorable. Every monster from the tiny pig-like things to the towering Shadow of the Colossus-esque dinosaur aliens are all enemies you can fight.

And this is just the environment!

Then you get to the city itself and get into the thick of the character system. There's character classes, skill levels, squads, military divisions, missions (quests essentially), arms manufacturers that determine your item availability, and upgrades for your equipment that min-maxers are sure to enjoy. Simply put, the game is incredibly complex. This isn't even counting the Skells, the robots you can pilot, which I cannot comment on as I have yet to get far enough in the game.

Gameplay itself is something of a mix between Phantasy Star Online and Kingdom Hearts in my opinion, but with a bit less action. You roam around in this massive open world populated with hundreds of beasts, and when you engage in combat (whether aggroing something or choosing to attack it), your attacks are automatic similar to an MMO, and you choose what skills to use as well as your positioning and whether you're using melee or ranged attacks, which you will be switching between as the flow of combat dictates.
But like everything in this game, combat is much more complex than it lets on. QTE prompts called "Soul Voices" come up, buffing and healing your squad if you succeed, and there are prompts to use certain skills in combos to do extra damage. Your class determines your role in combat, mostly determining if you are a tank, an offensive powerhouse, or a mix with some support skills. Further specialization later in the game determines whether you are better with ranged, melee, or both.

Graphics-wise, considering the game is on the Wii-U, I'm thoroughly impressed. How Monolithsoft managed to make the game so massive and suffer no lag is actually mind-boggling. There are some obvious load times, but there is a free DLC pack that installs assets to the Wii-U hard drive that lessens these. There are some moments when the resolution is clearly lowered, particularly in cut scenes, which can be a little distracting, but again, this is a Wii-U game, so it's only to be expected.

The music has been a quite a divider for people. A few of the professional reviews found it poor, while others say it's the best part of the game. Personally, I love the soundtrack, and I wasn't surprised when I found out the man who did the OST for Attack of Titan was in charge. The trend of vocals in ambient music in JRPGs is strong in Xenoblade, and it works incredibly well in my opinion. The epic rock vocals for the boss fights get me pumped, the lazy blues in town gives me a good 'winding down' vibe, and the livelier rock song that goes on during the day in the city really fits with the military theme. Nature tracks are all very well done, very atmospheric, although some can become repetitive after the long hours of scouring the massive landscape.

This all being said, I have a few gripes with the game that prevent a solid 10.

The main story is initially hooking- you really get the feeling of humanity's struggle- but I find its inertia quickly fumbles. The character's and their voice actors are hit-and-miss, and the dubbing doesn't sync up with mouth movements at all, to the point I find it very jarring and awkward. Speaking of awkward, the usual JRPG 'super-annoying mascot' is present, and while it doesn't have too prominent a role and doesn't spout quite as much a barrage of cringe-worthy lines as some do, I still found it annoying, nigh embarrassing. The dialogue sometimes gets excessive with redundancies- a character will say a lot without really meaning anything. For example, a character talks about heroism, and basically talks about how your character is a hero in ten different ways- was more than two really needed? It gets annoying. That being said, the ambient dialogue is incredibly well written in contrast ("I don't have enough middle fingers to respond!" That's golden). They must have had different writers for these.

My other chief complaint is how we're introduced to the game mechanics. In this day and age of games hand-holding you to a point of basically becoming virtual roller-coasters, I applaud Xenoblade's "lion cubs over the cliff" style of forcing you to figure things out, but it's perhaps just a little -too- rough. Even after reading the manual and tutorials, I took me at least five hours to get a grasp on how everything works.

Overall, if you love RPGs and aren't afraid of investing time to figure things out, Xenoblade is a must buy.

This is my initial review after the first couple hours of gameplay only.

Everything in this game is tedious, and the user interface is bad. It takes three clicks to loot a container. Every time you want to exit a dialogue, you have to confirm. So that's two clicks just leave a dull conversation with an NPC. Leveling up your skills requires to you click three times just to get to the correct menu, at which point you have click a lot more.

Combat (what little I've seen so far) is not very satisfying. Combat appears to be deep, with many options and combos, just not very rewarding for skilled play. Again it takes more clicks than necessary, and it feels very much like an old-fashioned 2D JRPG, not like a modern MMORPG or Skyrim or Fallout.

Graphics are good for the WiiU. That's it. Cut scenes are rendered beautifully, but I don't play games for the cut scenes.

So far the gameplay consists of running from one point on the map to the next, listening to a dialogue, selecting "agree" or "disagree," and then running to the next point. You get to kill a few critters in between.

At this point I immediately exit out of most dialogues; I just don't care what the NPCs have to say.

Again, this is only the first 2-3 hours of gameplay, but so far I haven't seen much that I like. I keep playing in the hope that I will like the more open world once I get past this interminable intro/tutorial stage.

But even if I like the open world, it doesn't change the fact that menus are bad, and that combat is tedious instead of exciting.

If you like JRPGs with lots of cut scenes and inane dialogue and 14 year old NPC girls in your party, you will probably like this. If you like western RPGs and were hoping for a game that included western RPG elements, I suspect you will be disappointed.

Right now I'd rather be playing something else, but I'll keep at it and hopefully it gets better. The world is beautiful and all that, but the gameplay just isn't there for me.

Although the character creator is nowhere near as good as fallout 4's it is still very good. I love the variety of different weapons and armor that reminds me of monster hunter in a good way. Skells are freaking awesome when you get the flight modules it makes the game 1000 times more epic.

Then came the dark ages of rpgs on the nintendo consoles, N64 had next to nothing, and gamecube had a handful, some of those just ports.

I missed the whole wii craze, and i feel like a lot of those who were "hardcore" nintendo fans might have done the same, thats just my opinion. Then i got a wiiu and although its my favorite nintendo system so far, no AAA rpg titles at all for it.

And now we have the biggest rpg to ever grace a nintendo(or is it any?) console.

The world alone is worth the price of admission, i have NEVER seen such beautiful scenery in a videogame. The whole"if you can see it, you can go there" line is actually true in this game, it is HUGE. Ive spent 6 hours traversing primordia, which is one of 5 continents, only to find out ive only discovered 1.7%, 1.7%! Granted ive been picking fights with whatever creature is in my way but still, the game is immense.

The combat is actually a lot of fun once you get a hang of it, something between what you find in an MMO and dragon age.

The UI is fantastic IMO ,equipment screen is great, youll find yourself constantly upgrading the armor and weapons you find, easy and seamlessly.

Classes let you equip diffrent equipment and "arts"(basically your attacks or moves you use in battle) you can also gain permanantly skills from these classes that give you buffs you can then pair to combine them with other classes and their respective arts, which gives you a lot of options to cutomize to your fighting style.

The story is very engaging so far, and the voice acting is top notch, your main character dosent talk, which dosent bother me in the least bit. The music is superb, im finding myself humming to abfew songs already.

Overall, if you like adventure/action/rpg games this is a MUST HAVE whether your a nintendo fan, wii u owner or living person.
