I began Xenoblade Chronicles X filled with enthusiasm for its intriguing world and gorgeous visuals. But like the hackneyed songs that play ad nauseum throughout, the gameplay doesn’t have enough depth or entertainment to sustain such a prolonged experience.

The fun in Xenoblade is seemingly never-ending, thanks to an amazing combat system and lots of things to do.

X is a triumph of art over design, the wonder of the world enough to make periods of drudgery worthwhile. [Jan 2016, p.116]

X shines when it comes to combat, exploration, and vehicle systems, making this sequel more engrossing than its predecessor. It’s richness makes it easier to overlook the shortcomings from both the technical limitations of the Wii U and the inconsistent soundtrack.

Monolith Soft has once more created something special under the Xenoblade name; it just happens to have buried that something special under a mountain of annoyances.

Despite being a bit too ambitious for its own good, Xenoblade Chronicles X is one of the most impressive Wii U titles ever released. While it may be rough around the edges, players are in for a good, albeit occasionally frustrating, time.

Xenoblade Chronicles X offers a resplendent world, fantastic combat, and transforming mechs, but figuring out how everything fits together isn't always easy.

If you’re looking to lose yourself here is a game that, for better and for worse, will show you the way.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is a huge game, but underneath the impressive surface is a game that could benefit from being much smaller. A potentially interesting plot is ruined by uninteresting characters, slow pacing and a bothersome gameplay structure. This should have been the game Wii U owners needed to breathe new life into their console, but it is not the game they deserve.

It ought to remind us of what’s so good about the maximalism of other JRPGs.

Probably the best JRPG this year, and definitely one of the best in a good long while. If you think you can stomach the early difficulty, try it.

There really is nothing quite like taking to the air for the first time, looking down at terrain that you’ve become intimately familiar with through hours upon hours of exploration of its lush, mesmerizingly beautiful world. It’s just a shame that the game chooses to spend so much of its energy preemptively punishing you, before it lets you get to the business of actually enjoying it.

And it's not only the game itself but the amount of work put on it. It sure feels different than the first Xenoblade game, but when you're playing it taking your time you realise why this is one of the best games ever made.

First of all, the content is almost endless. The main story is interesting and there are A LOT of secondary missions. This was something that I think everyone already knew.

What I try to say is that we have to look further. Xenoblade X provides a giant world to explore. And I mean GIANT. Even the city (New Los Angeles) is enormous. We have no loading screens while we're in open world, where there are SO MANY THINGS on screen. And the framerate keeps stable. Yes. The framerate is freaking damn stable. And that's one of the best things in this game, as the Wii U is not as powerful as other systems, and Monolith have Managed to take all this stuff into a 25GB disc and make it run on the Wii U perfectly. Genius.

On the other hand, you're not just going to kill stuff and leveling up. You will need to help the mankind in order to survive in planet Mira, and that means you can choose what you do in every moment. And there are many ways of helping people, as defending the city from the creatures outside, or being a mediator between some people's relationships, for example.

I can only say this game is, no doubt, one of the best games I've ever play. Totally worth it.

I don't really play RPGs let alone JRPGs but this game is excellent. The scale, the amount of content and quests is just staggering.
