I'm really sorry, but I have to be honest about this game. It's not good. Simply put, the motion controls do not work. They're a nuisance at best, and unbelievably frustrating at worst. The stealth sections are a little tedious, but it's a nice change up to the action. Graphically, well it could be better. Textures are really simple, very little detail in the environment, no AA, the effects are good though. The frame-rate also dips occasionally, nothing too game breaking but enough to notice.

All in all, I really wanted to love the game and in a way I still sorta like it. However the game is weighed down by it's gimmick unfortunately.

For as long as they'd been working on this game, I was very hyped and hoping that this game was going to be one of the Wii U's top games. After going through the tutorial, I realized that this unfortunately wasn't going to be the case at all. The game is reminiscent to the older Star Fox games in the franchise, but major flaws keep this game from being great.

That visuals are great. Nothing eye popping or stunning, but all around appealing. The characters still look a little awkward in my opinion, but still a huge improvement from what they looked like in Star Fox Adventures

    Sound: 9/10
Great music, good sound effects, decent voice acting. I wouldn't mind owning the soundtrack for this game

    Gameplay: 3/10
While the air battles remind you a little bit of Star Fox 64, there is one MAJOR problem that this game suffers, the controls. Having to look at 2 screens for a game where you need undivided attention to dodge enemy fire and obstacles is awful. Having to use motion controls along with joystick steering is confusing, nauseating, and feels much less fluent and more out of control than the game's predecessors. Star Fox was NOT meant for 2 screens and it shows in this game. By far the worst controls of any Star Fox game yet.

    Story: 5/10
    Star Fox 64, Ctrl+C , Star Fox Zero, Ctrl+V.

    Fun: 7/10
Even though the horrible controls hinder the game and take away from the experience, it's not at all a bad game. In fact, I still have fun playing and it reminds me of older Star Fox games. I still enjoy playing this game and I fully intend on playing this game to the end.

    My Final Rating: 32/50 64%

I like what they were trying to do and I like seeing Nintendo trying to utilize the Gamepad screen more, but it just doesn't work for Star Fox games. Maybe they'll have better luck with Zelda U, which has been delayed AGAIN! This better be one hell of a Zelda game.

Once you do this, it does become a lot easier to switch between the two screens, particularly at fast focus moments using the Arwing.
I'm a huge Nintendo nerd...and really wanted to enjoy this game, but the controls were so frustrating, despite completing the single player campaign a few times across different routes, that it just wasn't fun for me. I think this is the crucial thing, I didn't find it enjoyable.
Aside from the controls the game itself was primarily nostalgic of Lylat Wars, and that in itself is a good thing. The art style, conversations and gameplay were good, however it seems lacking in terms of new and different aspects that...again...were enjoyable. Yes there were a variety of new vehicles, but it felt like these were almost an after thought as there didn't feature a whole lot in the gameplay. Aside from updated graphics, which still weren't particularly amazing for a 2016 release, it felt to me like Star Fox Zero was an updated reboot with broken control schemes. At first I perceived for the challenge, but I'll say it one more time, in the end it just wasn't fun and the controls interfered with what otherwise could have been a great game.

The controls seem to have a heavy dose of "tried to fix what wasn't broken". Seriously, they very blatantly wanted to shoehorn that **** Wii U pad in like crazy and it shows because there was absolutely nothing wrong with the controls from Lylat Wars/Starfox 64. There should have been a way to play with the old controls, even if only for the Arwing. Anyone who says something along the lines of "Git Gud" needs to realize that the issue isn't that the controls are difficult, they're just UNNECESSARY AND ANNOYING.

Also can't make the voices come from the TV. Why this is even a **** issue in a AAA game, I don't know but I chalk it up to more **** Wii U Gamepad shoe-horning. At least I hope it is because the other option is incompetence.

Probably the biggest issue is the inclusion of vehicles that severely impact the pace of the game like the chicken walker. Star Fox Zero couldn't **** decide whether it wanted to be an on-rails shooter or an adventure game. It should have picked one of them and focused on it instead of trying to have it's cake and eat it too because having both of them SEVERELY impacts replay-ability.

The game has plenty of nods to older games in the series which is nice, pandering to nostalgia aside, but they played it too safe on the story and stuck too close to the original Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars. I think the game would have benefited from a bit more variance in that aspect and bit less variance in the controls department.

At the end of the day, the game is fun. But unlike Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64 and the original Star Fox, this doesn't have the spark that will keep me playing it after I've played through all the planets/missions and I don't really feel like I got my $$$ worth.

First, the praise: Graphically, the game looks fantastic but it does suffer from frequent frame rate drops. The sound and soundtrack is good though the voice overs, as always, leave a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, this is where the praise ends.

Let's start with the biggest issue: This game is short, short, SHORT! The game can be easily beaten in 2.5 to 3 hours and replay value is limited only to trying the branching paths and grabbing all of the collectibles. Gathering everything and finding all the branching paths MIGHT get you a total of 8 hours play time out of the ENTIRE game. It genuinely feels like they packed in Star Fox Guard because Nintendo knew the total playtime of Star Fox Zero was abysmal they'd try to deflect criticism by packing in a second title (which, frankly, is barely better than the plethora of cheap mobile Tower Defense games, I'm sad to say).

Now for the elephant in the room: Motion controls and second screen gameplay. In a word: Horrible. Yes, it doesn't take much to get used to them but there's a difference between getting used to them and having a GOOD control scheme. Unlike Splatoon which offered at least some sensitivity controls for players to customize their motion control and camera control, Star Fox Zero offers only the barest minimum of control over the motion sensitivity. The player can choose to either have it on all the time or on when pressing the trigger. That's it. No sensitivity controls, no way to completely disable motion control if someone decides they'd rather just go with twin sticks. Unless holding the gamepad perfectly still - which is a challenging feat - the reticule will drift, thus requiring a constant pressing of left stick or the Y button to recenter the aiming. The Y button will easily become the second most pressed button on the gamepad behind the ZR firing trigger.

Perhaps the shortness of the game is a blessing in disguise as the game is simply uncomfortable to play for prolonged periods because the player is constantly forced to shift view from the TV during on-rails and open flight areas to the gamepad for "target mode" areas. When forced to play in target mode, the player still has to glance at the TV for full spacial awareness which essentially means holding the gamepad in an unnatural position in order to see both screens - not to mention the eye strain of constantly bouncing between focus. This might work on the 3DS where both screens are near uniform distance from the player but on this game it's literally a pain in the eyes, neck and hands.

A title that can be completely played out in about 8 hours with shoe-horned in two screen gameplay, poorly optimized motion controls, and a lackluster tower defense pack in game is absolutely inexcusable at the $60 price point in 2016. At best this is a budget title and if this is the best Nintendo could do with the Star Fox IP, it was best left alone. People name dropping Star Fox 64 are obviously blinded by nostalgia alone; if you want the Star Fox 64 experience and have a 3DS, but Star Fox 64 3D. It's cheaper and far more entertaining than this blatant cash grab.

The game starts off strong delivering the excellent dogfighting action the series is known for, but as you continue to progress it becomes harder to deal with the awkward controls and the poor design choices become more apparent.

For a while I was exhilarated with the game. It was giving me more of that semi-rail shooter action I had been missing for a while. Even the "All-Range" mode which made battles take place in an open area and forced me to deal with touchier controls couldn't bring me down. However the further I progressed the worse those controls seemed to get , especially as new vehicles started being added to the fray.

So what is it that's so bad about the controls? Well, for whatever reason Platinum seemed hell-bent on shoving gyro controls down our throats for aiming. I respect the game's desire to make use of the Wii U's unique features, something too few of the system's games do in the first place, but here they actually get in the way of the game, especially later on when the scenarios you are placed in require more precision and have worse camera angles. To make matters worse you can't fully turn them off for the Arwing, and they are required for the game's other vehicles.

Star Fox zero is a game that would enchant me one moment and make me want to tear my hair out in frustration the next. The sort of re-imagining of Star Fox 64 delivers some of the series best and worst moments. While the good mostly outweighs the bad, it's not hard to take issue with it's controls, dated level design and graphics, and tedious later boss fights.

Is Star Fox Zero a bad game? Not entirely. As a matter of a fact it can deliver some truly thrilling gameplay when it's sticking to the series roots. However by the time I finished my first playthrough I had no desire to dive back in and find the alternate levels or play it's arcade mode and see everything the package has to offer. I was just ready to move on.

The flaws mean that Zero isn't Fox McCloud's finest moment. While it's going to be hard for the hardcore Star Fox fan to avoid, there's no denying that some of us are better off just waiting for the next, hopefully better attempt at a Star Fox game. This one just doesn't completely satisfy.

    - ... while others are extremely boring and a chore to play, for example the Gyrowing level.
    - While I was ok with the motion controls I disliked the fact that in some bossfights the game forces you to aim from the cockpit view. That made those phases of the game more tedious than fun.
    - The button mapping sucks ass and you can't change it. The way loops and u-turns are mapped makes it extremely easy to do one of those maneuvers by mistake, and that happens a lot.
    - The absence of a competitive multiplayer mode. Come on.
    - They should have made a new story. This is the second reboot in the series and the story is still the same, that is extremely lazy imo.
-Really disappointing final boss and ending. 64 had a way more emotional ending.

    My verdict:

All things considered, I still enjoyed this game (for the most part). In fact, it's probably the Wii U game I have enjoyed the most. I'm giving it a 7 purely because I think it had the potential to be so much better. They could have made the best Wii U game ever but some of the things they did kinda ruined the experience for me... oh well, it's still and ok-good game.

The biggest problems with the game are the forced motion controls, lack of options and no local or online multiplayer. Instead of using the GamePad for aiming, why not use the D-Pad instead for people who hate motion controls? And other control options like A to fire, B to bomb, L or R to roll, Y to boost, X to brake, ZR to transform or use Direct-i etc. And the two man co-op with one user controlling the ship and the other manning the guns isn't that great. A better co-op would be a local or online co-op with 4 players on a split screen, playing as each member of the Star Fox team and selecting who to play as in the mode. This is a game that proves Nintendo is out of touch with fans and gamers regarding their franchises and will drive them away if this keeps up. Expand

Firstly, I'd like to address the critically disclaimed controls. I can't say that they're hard to use, but they're definitely hard to master completely for an average player. Of course, it's mostly worth the struggle; the reward being that exhilarating feeling that you're Poe Dameron from Star Wars Episode 7, causing havok in the enemy lines, blowing up countless ships, doing barrel rolls, doing somersaults and watching yourself on the TV screen flying away from explosions like an absolute boss. But, of course no game is perfect.

This satisfying action never lasts for long, as Star Fox Zero is hindered by the interruptions of other vehicles that you have to play as. After such adrenaline-filled action with the Arwing fighter plane vehicle, all others become sluggish feeling and overall, annoying. The Gyrowing helicopter vehicle is the worst offender of this con. Although it's meant for puzzles and carrying bombs, it was incredibly unnecessary and the puzzles weren't puzzling, but instead were frustrating due to the awful mechanics of the Gyrowing. Fortunately though, this mode of transport had little gameplay time in the entire story mode.

This leads me the length of the game. Star Fox games are meant for replaying and trying to gain high scores. This was apparent to me when I started Star Fox Zero up. The levels vary in length and there are few of them. At $60 US retail price, it's only barely worth it due to this.

Overall, Star Fox Zero is speedy, slow, frustrating, fun, satisfying and disappointing but all in all, good. The enjoyment of this game does vary depending on what YOU like. So, if you like shoot 'em ups, replayability, are good at video games and tolerant of temporary setbacks, this game is for you.

However, the dogfighting was pretty good, you could actually fly up and down again finally like in Assault, and they brought back the Arwing walker like in StarFox 2, the walker controls are a bit tough, not too bad except when the game forces you to use the motion controls, just like with the Land/GravMaster.

The Motion controls were just a mistake that just didn't work. The story and voice acting was a let down, and I feel a lot of potential was wasted with this "reimagining"/Reboot.

The music wasn't memorable at all, however the mission design was a step in the right direction, somewhat, but it felt like driving RC cars a lot of the time, the GyroWing was frustrating, and awkward to steer, especially with the little ROB thing...whatever it was called.

All in all, like the rest of the series other than 64, it's underrated but not a masterpiece. 7.1/10, but it's time to evolve and push the industry lightyears beyond like they always wanted with StarFox.

Graphics first.- I don't complain too much here. Graphics on this game are an obvious artistic choice for the developer, and they run smoothly and the color palete is vibrant, but some times the colors become just dull shades of gray, unapealing to say the least.

Sound.- This is also Ok, some clasic Star Fox themes are rendered in orchestra and choir (StarWolf theme, for example) and they certainly add to the experience. Original tracks, on the other hand, are nothing to brag about, this does not top the legendary tracks of Starfox 64 or the original StarFox.

Gameplay.- THIS is what killed the game for me (and i can only speak for myself). I cannot grasp the train of thought Nintendo and Platinum had when designing the control schemes for this game: You have 2 cameras: inside the cockpit and outside, first one on the Gamepad screen and the other one on the TV screen, and have to switch between them on a regular basis, on paper it does not sound so bad, but when playing you can truly feel the clunkiness and oddness of this controls. Granted, you can press the - Button to change screens on displays (AKA not having to look down to the gamepad), but that still does not correct the calibration (or lack of it) of the giroscope inside the Gamepad Controller. You aim with motion controls, and aim with the reticule inside the cockpit view (Which obviously reduces the field of view by an annoying amount) and this lack of harmony between the aming reticule, the controls and what is displayed in both screens is really annoying, specially considering Star Fox 64's controls are super responsive, intuitive and FUN to play with.

The game is short, but that can be said for every other StarFox, so i really wasn't dissapointed by this factor, and it offers quite a sustantial amout of replay value given the many optional paths every mission offers, with different outcomes.

Story.- Also, incredible dissapointed. It's clear Nintendo has no idea what to do with StarFox's story.- This is basically a remake of SF64 (Which was, in a sense, a remake of the original). Zero uses many of the previously seen set pieces, and the sense of deja-vu was present all along my playthrough.

After so many years of hiatus, Star Fox deserved way better than this...

The announcement of a new "Star Fox" game received a lot of hype before its release, as everyone was so excited to play the game and see the "Star Fox" series make its triumphant return. And once it finally came out...well, you can read any "Most Disappointing Games of 2016" list and I guarantee you'll find the game on each one. Naturally, I had to play the game to get in on the talk, and, to be completely honest, I actually thought the game was good (remember, I consider 7 out of 10 to be "good," not "mixed").
"Star Fox Zero" was admittedly pretty fun to play: while there are some problems we'll discuss later, it felt fun to play, I was enjoying myself, I smiled because of the variety of different vehicles you can control and I loved the fast-paced action of the game. The graphics, though I was initially skeptical on them, were actually quite good, the voice acting is decent for the most part, and the characters are still memorable (yes, even Slippy).
That said, the game was very obviously not "perfect." Like everyone is telling you, the controls are a mixed bag: sometimes they're perfectly fine, other times they make the more challenging parts of the game even worse. They're not as bad as everyone makes them out to be, and for the most part, I found myself not really having huge problems with them, but they aren't perfect, and you'll notice that at some points in the game. The game itself, while fun, is also extremely short. Upon checking my Wii U daily log after completing the game, I found that I completed the game in just over 4 hours. I don't know, I feel like they could've added a little more story content to extend the runtime a little bit more. Furthermore, and most disappointingly, it kinda sucks that, after waiting 10 years for a new "Star Fox" game, we essentially just got "Star Fox 64 AGAIN!" "Star Fox 64" was a remake of the original "Star Fox," and this game is essentially a remake of "Star Fox 64." And if you consider that "Star Fox 64 3D" also exists, "Star Fox Zero" should just be called "Star Fox 64 2/3/4" or something like that, because that's basically what it is: "Star Fox 64" for the third or fourth time. They could've done so much more with the license, and having PlatinumGames at the helm means the possibilities were even bigger, but unfortunately, it does feel at least a little disappointing.
Overall, I certainly see where the disappointment comes from with this game, and I agree that the game was a bit of a letdown, but all in all, "Star Fox Zero" is actually a good game (like I said, 7 out of 10 = "Good." Not "okay," not "bad," "Good.") and I can certainly recommend trying it out if you're even the slightest bit curious. I had a good time with it and, even if you don't, it's worth it to at least get in on the conversation and chime in on whether or not it lived up to your personal expectations.
Final rating: 7 out of 10 "Good"

Also, while it can mastered, the control scheme gimmick is unnecessarily complex and inaccurate. It combines the use of the screen of the gamepad, that shows Fox's ship cockpit and the TV that shows the whole scenario. The cockpit view is used to give more accurate shoots. In theory, it makes sense, but in practice it doesn't work well. Lots of times when i was looking at the controller screen, i was hit by an enemy or part of scenario without taking notice, because it's too hard to watch 2 screens at the same time, given the fast pace of the game. This could've been perfectly translated to standard controller setup and would be much more pleasant to play. However, for the sake of showing Wii U gamepad significance, Nintendo pushed it too hard. For example, when you're trying to shoot looking at the TV, the shoots are artificially inaccurate. I mean, it's something that always worked with high precision on past Star Fox games, but now not more?

Star Fox Zero is a mediocre and uninspired game. It was supposed to be a grand return of the Star Fox franchise after 11 years away from home consoles. It was also supposed to show off the Wii U Gamepad’s potential like no other game before. But it didn’t achieve either of those goals.
First, let’s address the game’s most criticized aspect: the controls. While I’m not going as far as to say ridiculous things like ‘the game is unplayable’ or ‘the controls are totally broken’, like many people said when the game came out, it can’t be denied that Zero’s control scheme just doesn’t work well. It sure is innovative, and on paper, it sounds like a pretty clever idea. But in practice, it simply fails. If you look only at the TV screen, you can’t aim precisely, because for some strange unexplainable reason, the TV reticle points on something different that the one in the gamepad. And if you try to play only on the Gamepad, you’ll be able to aim properly, but you lose all perception of space, and maneuvering the ship becomes very clunky.

So whether you look at the TV or the Gamepad, you are always on a disadvantage. The only solution to this is trying to divide your attention and try to switch between looking at each screen, but that’s just uncomfortable and unintuitive. I can see this type of control scheme where you have to pay attention to both screens work, but in a different type of game. Star Fox is fast paced, it requires quick reflexes, and even more so if you’re aiming for high scores. However, this isn’t a ‘game breaker’ for me, as I still managed to win the game without major complications, but in the end the controls are almost entirely detrimental to the experience. The only times where I felt empowered by this control scheme were the boss fights, because those have a slower pace, and aiming and maneuvering the ship gets a bit easier. There were also other occasions where the controls worked relatively well for me, and I found myself enjoying them, but in perspective, those occasions are like less than 10% of the game.

And even if the game had standard controls, it would still be a disappointment. This has to be one of the laziest and less ambitious games Nintendo has done in the past years. It is basically a remake of Star Fox 64, except that it takes everything that was great about that game and replaces it with mediocre stuff. The dialogues are completely forgettable. They’re very far from resembling the extremely memorable quotes and voices from Star Fox 64. The characters feel like shallow versions of their former selves. And also, many situations are simply rehashed from SF64. Why couldn’t they do something new and ambitious with this game? Like, a new story, new characters, new planets and locations, a new villain… I guess the only addition of this game to the Star Fox formula (aside from the controls) are the new vehicles. And they’re not very good either. The Walker is a total pain to control, and the Gyrowing is ok to me, but a lot of people disliked it for being too slow.

Another big problem with Zero is the lack of content. The main missions can take around 5 to 8 hours at max. Sure, Star Fox 64 was also short. But that game is excellent at everything else. And it’s almost 20 years old. There’s no excuse for Zero being so lacking in content in this day and age. And why is there no local or online multiplayer in this game?

The game was also criticized for its rough looking graphics. Personally I can totally look past this issue. At least it runs at stable 60fps, and some of the stages look pretty good to me, like Sector Alpha or Titania. The music is decent, but none of the new melodies are as memorable as the classic Star Fox tunes.

I know I’ve been pretty harsh in this review with Zero, but the game isn’t a piece of trash either. It’s a decent game in fact. The missions are well designed and pretty fun (especially the bosses), which is probably the most important thing in a Star Fox title. But the enjoyment they provide is severely hindered by a clunky and inefficient control scheme. On top of that, it doesn’t push the Star Fox franchise forward at all, and it’s lacking of content. That is why in the end, I can’t recommend Star Fox Zero to anyone but hardcore Star Fox fans, who might find some true enjoyment here.

Technically the game looks alright but not amazing and beneath the others Nintendo exclusives, probably because of the steady 60 framerate per second. There's also the issue of the gamepad that, like in so many games before will become a burden. Its use is not well managed and there's no way to fully deactivate it..

The gameplay is like the original game an air fighting game that sometimes transform in a rail shooter or a tank fighting game, it allows the game to have some diversity but the issue of the gamepad remains and none are fully enjoyable.

Concerning the story it's classic but not badly done, but something was a bit awkward sometimes the characters had voice overs (poorly done) and sometimes it was only text that took your focus away from the center of the screen. It's also very short and will not last more that 6 hours, insufficient for this kind of game (there's some minor replay value for scoring and alternative way).

In conclusion Star Fox Zero is a disappointment and we will probably wait many more years before another Star Fox game, even if the main issue is the hardware. Advisable only to fans of the genre/licence.

I still feel deep within me that this game needs to evolve; it almost felt that I was playing a remake of Star Fox 64. Sure, the new vehicles and graphics are appealing, but it doesn't compensate the predictability of the story, that is the same from the previous games.

The soundtrack was plain, with no memorable parts in it (maybe Fortuna it's the best musical piece in the game).

Don't get me wrong, I loved the game, but it's disappointing that the plot remains the same. Hopefuly, if they port the game to the Switch, the control issue will be fixed.

Star Fox Zero is a wonderful re-imagining of one of the most beloved games in the series, blending elements from its early history in a tasteful manner. The meatier story mode leaves you with a better sense of fulfillment over its predecessors, and while there isn’t an online leaderboard to compare best times or scores, there are other extras to keep you playing. Adapting to the new controls might take more patience than some players are willing to give, but those who stick it out are rewarded with a higher-degree of precision than previously possible. It’s by no means perfect, but it’s safe to say Miyamoto’s latest experiment is a success.
