This is one of those rare games that somehow manages to get nothing right. None of the clear love the developers had for the game that was present in past installments is here at all. Instead, this feels like Nintendo flipping the middle finger to their fans and saying “You want your new Star Fox game? Well, here it is! Suck it, nerds!”

It seems that Miamoto San was so desperate to try to show you why the Wii U Gamepad was a good thing that he threw common sense out the window when designing it. The bottom line is this - this game plays worse than its N64 father and by a long way. It plays worse than anything that I can remember Nintendo releasing in a long long time.
The motion controls need to be calibrated repeatedly.... Like every time you shoot something. It is a solution for a problem that didn't exist in the first place and you fight it the whole game. Also, for a Star Fox game it's amazing just how much of this game sees you in other vehicles. The amount of pure Star Fox in this game is low, and the other vehicles just aren't that fun to play.
It's rare that a AAA Nintendo title lets me down but this sure is one of those occasions.

Damn, spent so much time checking my G-Diffusion system thingy I forgot to make sure I had a yoke. The controls in this game are mind boggling bad, in fact it makes the motion controls in Lair (the game that robbed us of Factor Five and the Rouge Squadron games) seem tight and fluid by comparison. The controls work semi okay on the traditional rail stages but for the other half of the game you might as well hit the ejection button and get the hell out of there.

More surprising than Nintendo killing a game with an unnecessary gimmick is the fact that the level design is surprisingly poor and uninspired. Coming from a Studio of Platinum's Pedigree I was expecting some exciting, bat **** crazy scenarios, but save for one or two moments, not even levels mind you, but one or two moments this game is sleepy. It's as if developers felt beaten down by the controls schemes and just slept walk through development, with uninspired levels and enemies to gameplay mechanics that are introduced only to be completely dropped from the sky, like a space ship dropping from orbit and burning up on re-entry because Nintendo stole their damn yoke!

Star Fox Zero is a really bad game. No one, and I mean no one would be defending this game if it didn't have characters that a large portion of us feel nostalgic for. This is Nintendo at it's very worst and doesn't bode well for the future of the studio and the gaming landscape in general.

Looking at two screens was a terrible idea that is forced on the player for this game. There is no way around it. It's so bad, and so pointless. To me it just felt like Nintendo was trying to say that the game tablet had a purpose, and maybe it could have for this game but dividing your attention between your TV and tablet isn't fun or very practical. If you want to play a great Star Fox game, stick to the snes and N64 versions. Ultimately, this game shouldn't exist, it is just a worse version of Star Fox 64. This is a franchise that needs to evolve. The open levels are far too enclosed and the game is so short that you do not even get used to the controls by the end. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Fox Zero....... Where do I begin.

To summarize the story of Star Fox Zero; it's the same story as Star Fox 64, except done poorly with some inconsistencies, lack of fully fleshed-out characters in this reboot, and the amount of lies dear old Shigeru Miyamoto told us about what the story in Star Fox Zero was going to have. If you're wondering what lies I'm talking about, he says in his interview with Jirard the Completionist that the story was supposed to make us question about whether General Pepper is good, or if Andross was bad, but no part of this story ever expands upon that idea. The teleporters that Andross uses are just a way for Star Fox to travel to alternate paths in the game, nothing more, and let's not forget the fact that characters act stupid from time to time, like when Fox saves Cat in the first gyrocopter level, and in the next level, when Cat shows up to aid Star Fox, neither Fox nor Cat seems to recognize each other. Hell, even some of the bosses, like Aquarosa in an alternate path of Corneria act like you've fought before when in that particular playthrough, you never ran into this boss, let alone, fight him.

Now lets talk about graphics. In terms of graphics, Star Fox Zero looks alright for a Wii U game, but in terms of Art style, it fails so bad on so many levels where you're on any planet. The buildings and roads in Corneria for example, doesn't seem to connect at all, and are just sitting around like a bunch of lego pieces. Some of you may argue that Star Fox 64 had similar features like that, but that's only there because of how limited the hardware was for the Nintendo 64. Another thing that was really jarring in this game is the enemy designs. While some of them look alright, a good chunk of enemies that are taken from the SNES Star Fox doesn't fit at all with the graphical improvement on the enemies in the N64 game.

Next: Soundtrack. Overall, the soundtrack is decent, not amazing, but not terrible, just decent. Mostly because of the new soundtrack that doesn't sound anything like Star Fox. The remixes of the original tracks are nice, but the original track sounds like something you would slap on any other game and it would fit perfectly well.

Finally: the controls. Now that we finally got to the most discussed part of the game, the controls. To sum it all up, it's awkward as hell. The two different screens used in both the wii u gamepad and TV screen may sound nice at first, but it's a headache when put to the test. Having the gamepad be the only way to shoot enemies while using the TV to move around is a poor concept that should've had a lot more improvement, The very least that Nintendo and Platinum games could've done is give the option to use the pro controller.

So overall, Star Fox Zero is a poorly made game that's sole purpose is to milk out some nostalgia from people who grew up with the N64. The graphics are nice, and the soundtrack is decent, but the other problems I've mentioned are too big for Star Fox Zero to be considered a decent game. If any of you would want to get into the Star Fox franchise, get the N64 version, or if you're a Nintendo 3DS owner, get the 3DS version instead since those are much better than anything Star Fox Zero has to offer.

The most important part of a game is being able to play it. Star Fox Zero is a great game. A spectacular game that, unfortunately is hard to control.

I am one of those nostalgia buyers who remembers loving SF 64 back in the day but was cool to most of the newer star fox games. I did play and beat both Adventure and Assault but both were not quite up to the high standards that 64 set.

It's been many years since we have seen a star fox game. I had heard about the controversy about the controls but I disregarded them. I am a gamer and I can get used to any controls. I will love this game.

That is where I was wrong. You see, the motion controls are not the only problem with the basic design philosophy of SFZ. The fire button is the right trigger button, not the A button so your index finger is going to get a work out, especially if you plan to try and rapid fire. And before you ask, no there is no button remapping. You can have any control scheme you want as long as you want the one that the developers want you to have. Maneuvers like the Barrel Roll, Somersault and U-turn are all mapped to the right analog stick. A barrel roll was a single tap away on SF 64 however in SFZ it requires a double tap left and right on the stick. It's far slower and harder to pull off when you're trying to avoid taking a hit.

Next, my issue is with the camera. The motion controls control both the shooting AND the cockpit camera independent of the ship's direction. That means you have a 180 degree view and range to shoot. That sounds great until you realize that you're going to have to keep the camera at weird angles on the boss to know when you're supposed to dodge and shoot. What's worse is that the game is desperate to show you set pieces but the camera is in YOUR control so you can miss critical telegraphs.

The motion control shooting is bad. This is my opinion, but if you don't like motion controls there is nothing for you here. The bosses are designed to take advantage of the above 18 degree firing arc. Flying straight towards the boss will get you shot down 90% of the time. The game encourages strafing and targeting with the game pad. It is literally impossible to defeat many bosses without taking advantage of the firing angles provided with the game pad motion controls so unless Nintendo releases a patch redesigning half of the bosses, there is not going to be an easy fix for this game.

Speaking of bosses, let's talk about them. The first thing you will notice is that many of them are long. Some are over 8 min with multiple phases and a death will force you to repeat the entire fight over again. Many old bosses from SF 64 make their return here but are re imagined. One complaint I have is that their hit boxes are somewhat small and that makes hitting them relatively hard. Also most of the bosses provide cover fire over their weak spot, thus requiring the player to fly parallel to the weak point and use the game pad to rotate to fire rather than the traditional 'point the ship at the weak point and fire' mechanics of most shooters.

One boss in particular gave me problem with a reoccurring area of effect attack that got faster as the boss lost health. I beat it by cheesing the fight and firing from out of range of the shield. The boss couldn't hit me and the hardest part was finding the next weak point. Very boring way compared to the in and out weaving that got me killed but was entertaining.

One last gripe about bosses: Their attacks are very hard to dodge at times. Because of the manual nature of the camera in all range mode (and a complete lack of a radar that SF 64 had) you will easily lose track of the boss and miss critical telegraphs thus getting you hit in the back. Or even if you do see the telegraph, the awkward controls mean that you have to hope to be fast enough to get your input in.

I came into SFZ with no fear. I can master these controls. It will be no problem. But then as I was playing I realized that forcing myself to play this isn't the answer to anything. I was not having fun. I was not enjoying the experience. I was forcing myself to play as if it was a choir.

If you like it good for you, but don't force yourself to like it. This game will never be what it hoped to recreate. You will never be able to kill a couple hours with a SFZ run. You will always have to deal with these controls.

Mario Kart 8 was the savior of the Wii U. Star Fox Zero is what is going to finally kill it. If the control controversy is splitting hardcore gamers, the general public is going to want none of it. And honestly if the NX follows this path, I am thinking about skipping the entire next nintendo generation entirely.

I love Star Fox. I have since I was in elementary school and I first played it on the SNES. So, I had high expectations for the title and was, for the most part, seriously let down.

I don't think the controls are as bad as everyone is saying, though I do think they should have allowed players to completely turn off the gyro controls, which turn out to be a complete pain during some fast-paced boss battles. The controls also could have been simpler; I am not sure why they opted for such a complex control scheme, which does take some time to master.

Some boss battles are frustratingly long. I don't mind a challenge, and nor do I mind having to figure everything out on my own, but the bosses target only Fox (as expected) and thus seldom expose their weaknesses if they are on the enemy's backside (which is common). You end up spending lots of time just trying to get behind the enemy, with little to no other action occurring. It's frustrating, boring, and, frankly, unnecessary.

Last, as many have already stated, the game is SHORT. I cannot believe I paid full price for a game that you can beat in 2-3 hours depending on your skill level. And, without any spoilers, the final battle with Andross is a let down, and causes immense frustrating as you shift your eyes from your TV to the Game Pad.

As many have said, the game is stunning and, once you master the control scheme, does feel nice as you navigate your way through the levels. The levels are, for the most part, lame, but some have some awesome challenge and atmosphere. If you are expecting to love this game as much as Star Fox 64, then I don't think you'll be pleased. However, the game does have some replay value (albeit not as much as I believe it could) and the voice overs are pretty engaging (and sometimes funny).

I wish I could still rent games easily, because I would have rented this title, beaten it, and sent it back to the store knowing I would never play it again.

The visuals are meh, 720p with frames dropping frequently. The level design is certainly uninspired. It’s not a pretty game. About the sound, it’s almost impossible to hear well what Fox’s friends are saying because the sound comes from the GamePad so I miss a lot of important information.
It looks like a launch Wii U game that was designed for showing off what the GamePad can be used to, but I wonder if the Wii U wouldn’t have a worse reputation if Star Fox Zero was released in 2012.

Probably as a GameCube game with a normal controller it would have impressed and gain more excitement, but as it is, it’s quite bad. I feel extremely disappointed. Save your money. If you have a 3DS get Star Fox 64 3D for much less money. Why would you prefer Star Fox Zero that only recycles ideas and have so many issues? Even if you only have a Wii U, you can get Star Fox 64 that is much better for 10 bucks.

Conclusion: mediocre soundtrack with mediocre remixes, boring dialogues, lifeless environments, poor replay value, no real multiplayer mode, no online mode, tiresome boss battles, really poor story and connection between characters, cumbersome tracking system, horrible sound design with lack of options, horrible visual design... And I haven't mentioned the controls.

The use of both joysticks to control the a-wing makes no sense. I do not know why they changed the button for a barrel roll. I am so use to double tapping R for the barrel roll I end up dying and wasting all my bombs.A long time fan of the series this latest installment controls makes for an unplayable game. Well the game is overall well made.. One glaring problem is the inability to fully disable motion controls. Some people do not have the convenience of a set up to be able to use motion controls. Myself concluded. This has made the game annoyingly difficult and actually unplayable for me personally. Splatoon at least allowed you to turn off motion controls. There is no excuse for the inability to fully turn off motion controls. I do not have the room to set up a proper area for motion controlled gaming. Nor do I wish to arrange furniture. I wanna like this game. I really do. But due to this design decision I am unable to enjoy this game. I cannot play far enough in as a result to even judge the quality of the story or any of the other gameplay features.

Nintendo if you're listening patch the game. I've been a fan of yours Nintendo since the original gameboy. But you have to learn from your other products. Try and consider options should be offered not forced.

Should this quirk about the game change I will alter this review to reflect that.

It's just a rehash of 64 with bad motion controls you can't turn off and awful mech levels. The graphics are really bad and there's too little replay value for a $60 game. Not worth it

The Game is really Good, great Story, badass and funny dialouge, awesome graphics, actually it would be even better than the N64 Version but there are two things which dont allow that. 1. It was released on the Wii U a console which sold poorly which affected the gamesales and 2. The controls of the game should have an option where u can play it with an Controller instead of the Wii UThe Game is really Good, great Story, badass and funny dialouge, awesome graphics, actually it would be even better than the N64 Version but there are two things which dont allow that. 1. The controls are AWFUL. The controls are so bad that I kept crashing into things which takes away from my health so I could not even beat the first level because of the clunky controls. For some reason it expects me to focus on two screens at once HOW! The ONLY redeeming quality is the graphics which are very nice to look at.

I really wanted to like this, I really did. The idea is good, the stages are well thought out and interesting but the controls sealed the deal for me. I could not get past the controls, they always felt unnatural to me and really forced in. It left a bad taste in my mouth, especially as it was the first Star Fox game I have ever played. if they are all like this, I might not play another one

This game is just awful. How did Platinum Games screw this game up so much, this is worst Star Fox game ever, heck this is one of the worst Wii U games of all time.

Star Fox Zero is a wonderful re-imagining of one of the most beloved games in the series, blending elements from its early history in a tasteful manner. The meatier story mode leaves you with a better sense of fulfillment over its predecessors, and while there isn’t an online leaderboard to compare best times or scores, there are other extras to keep you playing. Adapting to the new controls might take more patience than some players are willing to give, but those who stick it out are rewarded with a higher-degree of precision than previously possible. It’s by no means perfect, but it’s safe to say Miyamoto’s latest experiment is a success.

A rather halfhearted remake of a true classic, with less focus on the story of epic teamwork than one would have expected. A frustrating release for the fans, but nonetheless a fine addition to the Wii U roster.

If you can handle the gyroscope, you’re in for a quality thrill ride through the Lylat System, difficult but rewarding.
