    This game is a fine platformer, it's just not a sonic game. The jokes are pretty funny, though. The main problem about the game is that it's slow, so you can't run through hub worlds.

    I thought that this game was pretty awesome. The music was great, and the game play was entertaining. It was something new and different. I appreciate the new direction taken with the Sonic universe, and I hope that there are more boom games to come. I did however like the 3ds version better.

    This game sucks it has lots of glitches, the characters don't stop talking, I mean it's alright sometimes it can be fun, but it still should've been made better!:(

    In all honesty, this game is a mess. The constant framerate issues, the random clipping, the gross textures, bland environments, broken physics, everything just fell apart...
    This is what happens when you take a game engine that's not compatible with a system, and force that system to play whatever it can. CryEnging, I'll admit makes games    Sonic Boom makes Sonic '06 look like Sonic Boom.

    This is what happens when you take a game engine that's not compatible with a system, and force that system to play whatever it can. CryEnging, I'll admit makes games look good, just doesn't work with a Sonic game. Most importantly, it doesn't work on the Wii U!

    The only thing I CAN praise is the acting, some of the writing, and the animations during cutscenes. This is pretty much the best acted Sonic game so far. Every character interacts with each other without making it seem dull and boring. The writing can be pretty funny at times. The animations are very very VERY fluid and cartoon-esque. It just seems natural.

    So, overall, don't play this game. If you just have too, get it cheap. Do not pay over $20 for this.    … Expand

    However, someone once compared a game review to a food review. Every review can be different since everyone has a different experience with the product. My experience was mostly positive. None of the glitches detracted from my gameplay experience (unlike in Sonic '06, where you have to reset the game if you mess up the Silver fight, or when you get stuck on a wall as Knuckles). The framerate drops never happened to me at times where it was vital to have a quick reaction.
    This game was easily the funnies Sonic game on the market. While a lot of the jokes fall flat, a few of them actually made me laugh out loud. Regardless, this game is marketed towards 6-12 year-olds. It makes sense for someone of my age to not think all the jokes were funny.
    The story was average. Evil guy wants to destroy all organic life forms and the heroes stop him. Nothing special, like in Sonic Adventure 2 or Unleashed, but nothing horrible and confusing like in Sonic '06. The time travel segment makes a lot of sense and is very thought provoking... at least to me.
    People say this game is worse than Sonic '06, but it's really not. While the combat got repetitive near the end for me (I played though the first half of the game twice, so this wouldn't happen to me if I hadn't), it's nowhere near the repetitiveness of Sonic '06, where most characters only have 1 useful attack. The loading screens are also nowhere near as long, and like I said, the story is better and there are less troublesome glitches (at least in my playthough).

    The difficulty curve evolved quite nicely throughout the game. Thoughout the game, enemies and platforming gradually got harder. The game itself is very easy, however. There are no game overs and you rarely run out of rings because 1) you don't lose a lot when you get hit and 2) the game gives you way more rings than you'll ever need. Honestly, I'm glad this game was easy. If it wasn't, it would be frustrating.

    While the story mode is on the short side, there are tons of collectibles and multiplayer modes. I didn't find the multiplayer minigames to be all that fun, but others have. Unless you get all the 20 chests and 15 crowns on your first go though a level, you will not want to go back. There are 8 levels, and all of them are very lengthy. The combat got too repetitive by the time I beat the game that I felt as if getting all the collectibles wasn't worth my time.

    The graphics are stylized. Cell-Shades. Sometimes, the style doesn't look good. How visually impressive the game looks depends on the lighting. Some areas make the game look like it was actually made in 2014. Other times, the game can look like it was made with Roblox...

    In the end, I really can't recommend this game to anyone, since you most likely won't have as good of a time as I did with it.    … Expand

    I played the demo out of curiosity, and had to put it down after 5 or so minutes because it was so awful, the controls are horrible, the combat is clunky, the frame rate is horrible, and the voice acting is worse than all of these thinks combined, on the plus side the music, while it's not good, doesn't make me want to kill myself.

    Sonic Boom is a masterpiece.
    It'll make you laugh.
    It will make you cry.
    It will change your life.
    I was on the brink of suicide when my friend came in and said, "man, you gotta play Sonic Boom! Its the best." I did.
    It takes Sonic to the next level, with fun combat, awesome running sections, and a deep emotional story.
    I recommend this game to anyone. 10/10 Game of the year.

    Although there are a few frame rate and bug issues, those aren't that annoying and are usually exaggerated, the combat was pretty fun and the speed sections were also admittedly fun too, the hub worlds are a little confusing at first but I also love them due to exploration.     I actually really liked the game! I enjoyed the exploration and huge hub worlds. The music was good. The voice acting was top notch! The Characters were good. And while the Graphics didn't live up to their full potential, they were okay.

    Did you like sonic's friends commenting on everything they do? Do you like tedious platforming? Do you like an unfinished game? Well if you said yes the you're playing the wrong game. Sonic 06 was far better because I could go fast. 10/10 would cry again.

    This game was really very good. I had low expectations after I was personally unimpressed with Sonic Lost World. I really like this one however. The story is great, the controls are superb and the speed brings back childhood memories of hotwheels cars.

    To counter all the hate towards this game, I will give an in-depth review. I must say that this is a great improvement on the Sonic games of old. The controls were a blast and the gameplay is really fast and challenging without being too difficult. A good mixture! The new character designs take a little while to grow on you, but once they do, you'll be quite pleased. The new character designs take a little while to grow on you, but once they do, you'll be quite pleased. Quite frankly they are a good revamp that trump the hedgehog of old. This is one of the cases where change was much needed. Sonic actually has some cool new moves this time around. With his new Enerbeam, you can do things you would never have imagined doing in the classics! You can climb walls, swim, and design your very own ATV's! I hope they add new features to this fascinating weapon as DLC. It was really entertaining and way past cool. Playing as Knuckles was a little rough I will admit. He can’t glide any more which makes some levels difficult, but burrowing more than makes up for it. He can actually find treasure and digging can be used tactically in boss battles.

    Also, as with any game one of the most important elements is the story. In Rise of Lyric, the plot will really suck you in and is in fact one of the most intriguing in platforming games in recent memory. Unlike previous entries in the series, you no longer search for Chaos Emeralds. Now it's Chaos Crystals, which are way more interesting than silly emeralds! The new villain Lyric was also really memorable in the vein of Hannbial Lector and Vladimir Putin. He's terrifying on a psychological level and hopefully will continue to play a large role in Sonic games to come. Compared to the old games, overall the characters are more fleshed out and actually have depth with three dimensional personalities. I promise you will care for them this time around! When one of the main characters dies (SPOILERS!), you will feel much loss, just like if you had lost a family member. The plot twists really took me by surprise, particularly when the apocalyptic nature of the ancients is revealed. Other than that the dialogue was amusing and heartwarming, while at the same time maintaining an atmosphere of tension and mystery. Much applause must also be directed to the VA in this game. I was able to take them seriously throughout the entirety of the story and not once could I find fault in their performance.

    All in all, it was the little things that helped this new generation of Sonic stand out. The soundtrack was one of the best in ages. The levels where you get to play as Metal Sonic were also a great surprise. I actually wasn't suspecting that and was pleasantly shocked to see this character again and play through his perspective. The physics for the spaceship levels were really entertaining and helped Sonic Boom stand above previous titles in the series. Finally, there were cameos from all sorts of characters in the franchise. Princess Acorn even makes an appearance at the end!

    In conclusion, Rise of Lyric was everything I ever wanted. The game is so good I played it for free. If you haven’t bought it yet, you should. Ignore the hate, and give Rise of Lyric a shot. If you don’t like it, and I know you won’t, you will be one out of a million. Everyone else, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.    … Expand

The game is, fun, to an extent, it's not world shattering, in fact, it's very reminicent of Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, consistant slowdown, slow characters, unintersting combat, and many glitches, but underneath, it's quite solid. The level design is very strong, and works very well with the slower characters, the puzzles are very simple but they are fun, and the separate gameplay styles add depth while not straining the formula to it's limits. The biggest problem is the pacing, every 5 minutes you'll come across a combat section where you'll spend the next what feels like 10 minutes beating up robots. There's also the mach-speed sections, which are that by name only, the most baffling thing to me, is that you can stop during these sections, the same with the running on water moments, and sections where you control the water-thingy, are so awkward and stiff.
    So overall, Rise of Lyric, is a very average game, it's not as bad as many people say, but I can see why they compare it to Sonic 06, but yeah, it's not too bad, just ignore the awful puns.    … Expand

    Considering the game supposed to have a plot with development in it, I've dropped by original score of 5 to a 3 because it is completely lacking in any character development or personality. None of the four main characters have any internal OR external conflict with the plot of the game, and in no way are they relatable.

    The voice acting is cheesy and unlife-like.

    The animations aren't bad, but they're not good by any means.

    There are glitches aplenty, not to say that no game is without glitches, but when a game is oozing with almost game breaking glitches every few seconds, there is a definite problem.

    The game often feels like its trying to be too many things at once - a platformer, a beat em up, a block puzzle, even an RPG. At certain parts it feels like they're changing between different kinds of camera controllers and player controllers to completely mix up the experience the player is receiving. There are some games that effectively do something like this, there are even some games that can effectively mix together a bunch of genres seamlessly - but this game is no where near being that.

    The art, style, and models are the only thing this game has going for it.

    This is the closest thing we are getting to having the four most important characters in the Sonic franchise to work together for the first time in a plat former to stop Eggman. By the way, we got a American Classic Sonic, why not Modern? Also Knuckles has the best design in this game because it portrays the true powerhouse he is.     it is a different Sonic game. enjoyed it, i know why people hated it due to framerate drops and clunky controls. but love playing a platformer game. don't know why people just wanted Sonic to run fast and just collect the rings. this can be improve though.

    A brilliant and innovative game that gives a fresh take on sonic with an all new universe. The controls are perfect and it also manages to capture the adrenaline and speed that makes people go to Sonic.

    This game is so bad its fun.. Actually the glitches can give you a couple hours of gameplay XD the combat sucks. You're slow YOU'RE SONIC! SONIC IS FAST BUT NOT IN THIS GAME HE'S SLOW! Still. Get this game. Best. Game. Ever.

    Yeah, it was very disappointing...but honestly 3,8 is way too harsh. Keep in mind this was a brand new team worked on this game and I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and hpe they do better in the future. The game had sine enjoyable stages, I liked the new character designs and the music isnt half bad

I had the opportunity to play along with some of my friends and despite the graphical quality when 2-player are on the screen, the games still continues funny to play. It's immersive, it's big and it deserves to be played*.Sonic Boom is a title that can be compared to great mystery. I had the opportunity to play along with some of my friends and despite the graphical quality when 2-player are on the screen, the games still continues funny to play. It's immersive, it's big and it deserves to be played*. Looking for another point of view, the WiiU itself has not been saw with good eyes, this implies in a non-sense criticism over the game (that is actually very good). There are a lot of good games, games better than Sonic Boom on the console, but this doesn't mean Sonic Boom has something wrong on it. No way! I agree that some adjusts could have been done before releasing the game and I assume that one year more would be sufficient for the challenge.

    Considering the level design and hardware capacity, one should say that Sonic Boom on the WiiU is relatively good as Knack on PS4. they're just alike in essence. Games with good graphics and level design, but hated by many that couldn't understand the projectt's ambition. Both great games. Sonic is an icon and deserved more love. That's why I'm giving it a 10 out of 10. But I hope some minor adjustments comes in some future patches.    … Expand

    Overall, this game is a decent game with some room for improvement. There are things like glitches and framerate issues that need to be worked out, and the graphics aren't that great, but it was fun in the end.

    People really need to take a step back. Sure, it has no polish, but it still worked fine. And it did mroe than that. The story was funny and light, and the first half of it is just how I want my Sonic. The controls are beautiful, so I found it nice, and the level designs were very simple, but fun. It's an average game, but still a good one.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is a good idea for a game starring the blue blur on paper, that just goes horribly wrong. I'm just going to start with the game's major flaws. The game isn't one that runs well. When you have the game run the way it's supposed to, it's 30 FPS. But the frame-rate isn't consistent and pops all over the place. I'm not mentioning the various bugs and glitches here, because I didn't run into any, but I know they exist. The game isn't exactly going to be winning any awards in the graphics department either. The game looks bad, I've seen worse, but I know the Wii U is capable of much better than that. Pop-in is EVERYWHERE. Not to mention when Co-op comes into play, the lighting engine completely turns itself off. Basically no shadows are seen.

    The combat is incredibly basic. There are 2 attack buttons. A normal attack button, and a special button. And while that could have worked, when there's no way to upgrade combat to earn more combos, the game feels tedious and a button masher. Doesn't help much that whenever you're not hydro-dashing, the game's speed is slow. Made even worse by the huge hub worlds, especially Bygone Island.

    Speaking of the upgrade system, I don't have a problem about the collectibles (mainly because this game is ridiculously easy), but the upgrades do next to nothing besides the health upgrade, but you need Shattered Crystal (the 3DS Version) to do so. So you'd need $90 to make the game even easier.

    Doesn't mean I didn't find anything positive to say about the game, however. The story may not be the best thing ever (in fact, this story has the most plot holes I've ever seen, and doesn't even try to explain this new world, despite it being a PREQUEL), but I can praise the character interactions. And I like the game's main villain, Lyric. His motive is an actual reason to be a villain, which is more than I can say for villains like Lost World's Deadly Six. And while the soundtrack is mostly forgettable, there are 1 or 2 songs I actually like.

In this new adventure I saw a beautiful open world game in which it only took a few minutes to get from location to location. This new perspective made me realize the new paradigm Sonic is heading toward. Speed has always been the most boring part of the games...why do people like them?

    What do you think of when someone brings up a Sonic game? The gameplay? Not here! The story? Why would you ask about the story? At least the music... No they screwed that up too. Glitches? Sorry they patched those... If you need a Sonic game on Wii u, pick up Sonic Lost World. Sonic Lost World isn't great but still more fun than this.

    There have been a lot of bad Sonic games over the years but Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric has to be near the top (or bottom? ) of that list. There is hardly anything redeeming about the game. Wii U owners looking for a Sonic fix would be better served by "Lost World" or just going back to the Wii's "Sonic Colors". Honestly, there is no reason to play this.

I at least got some enjoyment from Sonic 06. Sonic Boom? No. The music is generic, the levels are generic, the game play is generic, it's all just so generic. And don't get me started on the cardboard cutout characters. Sonic isn't too bad (just generic Sonic with no personality), but Tails is a stereotypical nerd, knuckles is a stereotypical dumb brute, and Amy is the stereotypical girl. Then there's Lyric. He is the most boring, generic antagonist I have ever seen. He has no personality whatsoever. If you want a better Sonic game that actually feels like a Sonic game, I highly recommend Sonic Generations or Sonic Colors. This game isn't worth your time or money. It blows my mind that this game was once $60.… Expand

    What I wanted was a Open World 3D Sonic game. Instead we became a Sonic Version of The Legend Zelda. With the easiest if I can even call it"Dungeons" . But I like the Design and Combat Gameplay. For me its Sonic Unleashed Werehog levels or Sonic Battle 3D.

They are mostly new accounts that have only signed up to rate this game and the other sonic boom release. Very fishy, it seems a lot of places are doing this when their game flops? Naughty.

I really, REALLY wanted to like this; to sneer at all of the die-hard fans who moan at the slightest change of design in a Sonic game, and the Sonic Boom show is great! But really, it just shows that it was thrusted out without quality assurance. Rather tragic, really.

    Alright so to start, I was really siked when I heard this was announced. I really looked forward to it and I spent tons of time in preparation, even writing out the details of the characters in short stories in order to better immerse myself as them. I knew things were going to be a lot different from the other games so I was a bit worried that it might get complicated, but it seemed toAlright so to start, I was really siked when I heard this was announced. I knew things were going to be a lot different from the other games so I was a bit worried that it might get complicated, but it seemed to work out pretty well all things considered! The gameplay is pretty fun, but it's the story where this review gets where it was.

    I noticed immediately that the four main characters were different than before. Unlike in the past, everyone seemed to have some sort of more rugged or darker backstory than I'd come to expect from the other games. But I didn't mind it. I played as the happy one this time and I wouldn't have worry about it.

    So the story starts out with the four characters meeting after being attacked. Of course, the central lead being Leo who is a loser than nobody really respects is accused of having a part in a terrorist attack that his brother, Valorin, was believed to have a huge part in. The other lead character and possible love interest, Nico, seems to had been caught in the mess along with the two lead supports Ava and "John Doe". They successfully battle all the members of Primus Terminus and seeming about to capture Leo's brother, our characters suddenly find themselves sucked into an alternate reality where things have changed slightly. Spooky!

    After fighting through the same area (Ugh, repetitive much!?), we once again meet with Leo's brother. However, there is a notable shift in attitude from before as his brother claims to either have no recollection of Leo or does not care about him. After killing him, we are returned to the real world just in time for a train to crash. The main characters seem just about dead right then.

    But wait, miracle science has worked to revive them! All for the low price of 20,000,000 giers (their money). A man named Absolon (super lame character) then tells them they must work off their debt in ways they see fit. As well as this, Harkin Macht has told Leo he must track down his brother or else he will be declared a terrorist as well! Wowzers!

    So now the main characters must earn money while tracking down the movements of the terrorist group Terminus Prime! Along they way, they meet numerous colorful faces like a creature named Popo and Robot trapped under shipping supplies. Personally, my favorite character is Tat though. But I was left utterly disappointed when the creator seemed reluctant to reveal whether or not Tat was actually a robot. I think he should've taken a bold move and just gone for it regardless of what criticisms he may receive for it.

    I remember my favorite line from the game as well. "You're all diamonds", one that was emotionally moving as Leo looked down at his hand in the hospital room while sitting next to Nico. I couldn't help but feel my self tearing up as he said that before Tat used the Aionus shift to blow up the moon and prevent it from crashing down into the earth which would've ended life as we know it.

    I tried to like the game more, but in the end I have to give it a solid 4/5. Eight endings and if you get the genocide ending, it ruins the other ones? I'm sorry, but that's far too much pressure to handle. It has annoying minigames such as picking out words in emails and then making sure to send those messages without any way of knowing if you picked the right one until the end of the game. It also has an annoying mechanic where normally there is two choices but you have to stall for time in order for option 3.

    After reading comments by the author on what he was planning to do, I was a bit surprised.

    Not a bad, nor terrible game, but it's lacking the fast classic Sonic action that everybody loves. It has OK graphics, visuals, and gameplay for a WIIU title, and is overall not bad. Don't listen to the people giving this game a 0 or 1/10. If you're a die hard Sonic fan, why not give this one a shot?

    This is like Sonic '06 all over again, but it's even worse. I absolutely despise the redesigns, and there are so many bugs and glitches. I definitely do not recommend that you go out and buy this game for yourself. And if you already have this game, sell it on eBay and give it to someone who really cares about Sonic.

    What kind of diseased person would like this game?

    I'll start with the positives: story isn't as bad as twilight, the redesigns aren't horrible and Amy is less hatable. Keyword: less.

    Now the negatives.

    There are so many bugs and gamebreaking glitches. More than half the game can be skipped, and sometimes you have to restart everything.

    Music is a disgrace to the good music of the franchise.

    Knuckles' personality got screwed over, and is now the worst character in the franchise.

    Shadow's character arc got completely ruined, and is now a generic dark counterpart. But this time, he's a loner who hates friendship and ponies! (Which is why Rogue is not in this game).

    Frame rate. Just- frame rate. that is all.

    Combat is nothing more than button mashing.

    Sonic's arms are now permanently in their werewolf form, because now they're stretchy.

    Puzzles don't work.

    Death does Jack ****

    So called "quips" are intolerable.

    But even if you overlook all of those errors, the main problem is that Sonic can't move fast, which is his trademark feature. There are some fast parts, but even if you overlook the massive drop in quality those are generaly unenjoyable.

    Don't get this.

    Please.

    (Also, some people here are saying that the spin off cartoon is good, and therefore the game is good.. First off - no, it's not. Second off - we are judging the game, not the cartoon.)    … Expand

    Controls are bad. Graphics look bad. Redesigns look like trash. Platforming sucks. Story sucks. 100% unplayable, alright cutscences, not so much variety, and GLITCHESSS. This game is the WORST sonic game of all time.

    sonic 06 for ps3 and 360 is better than sonic boom rise of lyric for wii u, do me a favor you better avoid sonic boom rise of lyric for wii u and stick to sonic 06 for ps3 and 360, because sonic 06 got solid 6.75 from game informer and sonic boom rise of lyric gets 4 from game informer.

    Just simply an average platformer. There isn't much more to say about this game other than it's probably not worth your time unless your craving for a slower sonic game.

    Can I just say that THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER!!! From the first trailer, I was hyped beyond relief for this game. And man is it good! The gameplay is a fusiong of fighting games like Shaq Fu and platformers like Bubsy 3D. The story is also really good and cool, but the best is the chars. Sonic is really fast and also cool, Knuckles is really funny and tough, I love them all! Except forCan I just say that THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER!!!     When I rated sonic 06 I game it a 10 as a joke, but now, play time is over, first of all, the music is extremely bland, but that's not much of a problem because no one will ever shut up, both games have glitches, but at least in sonic boom you have to go out of your way to exploit any glitches, the only good things to come out of this is the cartoon and fire and ice

The glitches are mostly only there if you try to find them. I have only run into 2, maybe 3 glitches throughout trying to play the game normally, which is a problem, but it wasn't horrible. The writing isn't as good or funny as the show, I did still get a few laughs out of it. One thing I kind of do have to agree on with a lot of people is how the characters never seem to shut up that much. It does get annoying. Overall, there are much better games out there, but there's a whole lot more that are much worse. Considering Big Red Button had to change to the Wii U, something Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric was not really meant for when they started developing it in such a short amount of time, it's still OK for what it is.     I won't lie to you, I only played the free demo, but I think we can all agree that it's bad. If we ignore the unstable frame rate, the game breaking glitches, the awful one-liners and all that stuff, it still is a pretty terrible beat-em-up with sonic plastered all over it

    No speed stages (Not boring speed sections) Cheesy and corny dialogue and bad story with no replay value and get this if you play on 2p in story mode the game becomes a downgrade EPIC FAIL SEGA    I was Hyped for this game 2 years ago but what Sega and Big Red Button delivered is a broken, buggy, low frame-rate, unpolished game even demo's from the e3 looked better than the final product.

    In terms of visuals, the Boom designs of the main Sonic characters really do fit very nicely in this universe, along with the designs themselves really showing off the characters personalities, Knuckles especially (Though the lack of intelligence is a cringe moment), the lighting really reminds me well of how it was done in Sonic Unleashed and the voice acting is very good from the 2009 group, in fact I'd say this is the best they've done so far.
    I do recommend this game, however I wouldn't recommend buying it full price from Amazon, I say if you see it in a Second Hand shop for about £20 or less, then get it, at least you're not being ripped off    … Expand

    O jogo em si não é ruim, pelo contrário, só falta ele ser bom. Sonic Boom tem gráficos agradável, o problema foi vender com o nome Sonic. Estaria ansioso pra uma continuação se a mesma viesse polida. Misturar hack n slash com plataforma foi uma boa idéia.

    I love Sonic games. Even the ones that get bad reviews, I tend to still have fun playing. With this being said, this game does have some problems. The big one is the framerate. When you enter high speed sections, the graphics tend to get choppy, which can unfortunately have an effect on the gameplay. It's not unplayable, but it is a major problem. If you are a Sonic fan like I am, then you might enjoy this game, but if you aren't you will probably want to give it a pass. If you are looking for a Wii U Sonic game, I highly recommend Sonic Lost World. It's a more traditional 3D Sonic game, and it runs smoothly without graphical hiccups.… Expand
