  • Summary: Fight your way across the celestial world of Avalice where cats are green, motorcycles drive up walls and monster girls do most of the buttkicking. Freedom Planet is a cartoony, combat-based platform adventure that pits a spunky dragonoid and her friends against an alien attack force.

When it all boils down, Freedom Planet is the best Sonic the Hedgehog game I’ve played in years.

Freedom Planet may have started out as an attempt to recreate Sonic, but it stands on its own as a great platformer.

If Sega isn't going to deliver the classic Sonic follow-up that old-school fans have been clamoring for, then at least Galaxy Trail is ready to step in. [Issue #18 – November/December 2015, p.19]

Freedom Planet provides a great mix of nostalgic aesthetics and fine-tuned platforming gameplay, resulting in a memorable indie title that should not be passed up.

If you enjoy platformers but never got into Sonic games, give this one a shot – you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

One might feel tempted to mistake Freedom Planet for a copy of Sonic The Hedgehog but that would be tremendously unfair for this work from GalaxyTrail. Its fun and precise gameplay mechanics, along with a wide amount of content and very original levels will bring hours of 2D fun which will resonate particularly well with 16-bit platforming enthusiasts. Were the mixture between action and platforming be more balanced and the boss fights less burdensome on the player and this would become an instant landmark of indie games.

It’s a tremendous amount of fun and a very rare example of a Sonic style game that actually works.

Mmmmmm I smell another Wii U hidden gem. The game was already fantastic on PC, but topped with fantastic controls on Wii U and Wii UMmmmmm I smell another Wii U hidden gem. The game was already fantastic on PC, but topped with fantastic controls on Wii U and Wii U exclusive free DLC coming (in the form of an entirely new playable character), this is by far the best version of the game to buy. If you loved the classic Sonic games, then I have good news for you: this game is basically a classic sonic game but much much better. It's the true Sonic 4, but on steroids. If you own a Wii U, then this game is a must-have, and is absolutely worth the $15 and then some!

    PROS:
    +Fantastic level design
    +Stellar (and hella catchy) music
+Fun gameplay this is different for each character
    +Never gets repetitive
    +Beautiful and detailed graphics design

    CONS:
    +VERY difficult boss fights

OVERALL: 10/10. Despite the difficult boss fights, the game is unbelievably fun. The attention to detail that was put into this game truly has paid off big time.

While playing Freedom Planet you will constantly feel this rare feeling of reminiscent gameplay when you were kid. Every aspect suits here: gameplay is great, music is great.. even characters are cool and story is fun. Stages are quite lengthy.... and don't expect to gather all stuff at once. It's also little difficult sometime (bosses), but I love it - this is just it! Freedom Planet is just this sort of game that doesn't insult player treating him as a dumb statistical consumer. It demands and rewards. This is how games were when we were kids back in early 90s and words can't describe the general positive feeling while playing this game. I liked early Sonic games, but was never big follower of it's gameplay. And I don't know how it's possible but Freedom Planet is far better than sonic. I have just one wish: If just the next Freedom Planet wasn't retro-pixelartish... Good games should have good look and Freedom Planet deserves it!

I have played every sonic game ever; from Genesis to GBA, DS and Wii-U, including thad abomination of Sonic 4 episodes 1&2. But Freedom PlanetI have played every sonic game ever; from Genesis to GBA, DS and Wii-U, including thad abomination of Sonic 4 episodes 1&2. But Freedom Planet is the real follow up to Sonic & Knucles. It not only follows the classic formula and gameplay - it understands Sonic is not just about speed but it's about speed, great plataforming and multiple paths - and expands on it. My first playtrogh cloks over 20 minutes for each level, that's bigger than Sonic ever was. And it has lot's of exploration, unlockables and style. 2 diferente playable characters, lot's to do and see. The 16-bit art style is perfect. If this game were on Sega Saturn, it would be a generation classic. Somehow this game doesn't get the same marketing budget as, say, Shovel Knight, but don't don't think twice; get it!! Expand

This feels like playing Sonic for the first time on the megadrive. That feeling of pure fun and wanting 5 more minutes to see what's next. Not how Sonic feels when revisited now, but how it was when first played.
It's fast, fun and the bosses are challenging. The story mode is very much a comedic take on those games from that era and not to be taken seriously (although you can choose to skip in arcade mode).
All in all an excellent addition for the WiiU and only loses one point because at about 5 hours, it's too short!

Though they aren't exactly the same as the classic Sonics, the feel of both games takes you back to traditional platforming, moderate speed controlled by the user: rather then just holding down a boost button to speed through a level. With different routes to reach different areas, and more user control, its alot of fun. Boss battles are challenging, and the story is fleshed out for those that are into story based games. Soundtrack is fantastic also. Expand
