Phenomenal game. The breaking weapons can be annoying but you come across new ones so fast it begins to not matter.

The building is fun although becomes a little necessary.

The sky mechanics are incredible. It really does feel like an expansive open world and to me, does feel a lot like Zelda still too

Best game ever. That’s all I have to say. The physics are still as great as ever, but my only complaint is that the d-pad is pretty bad so sometimes when I try to attach something to my arrows it brings me to shields instead.

My main issue: It is quite a bit different from breath of the wild, but mostly in ways that altered the experience in a less than stellar way.

My main issue: It is quite a bit different from breath of the wild, but mostly in ways that altered the experience in a less than stellar way.

I literally spent 3 hours trying to get to the shrines in the sky by moving clockwise and climbing the wall above the void and it didn't work.
Because this was a sequel to breath of the wild, i expected a more open creative starting world but was instead greeted with a much less intuitive quest.
The starting map is like a puzzle with only a few answers rather than a world where you can choose your own path. I am almost certain this was not an issue for quite a lot of people who enjoy this game, but for me i was very much affected by this change in gameplay.
The ground world seems to have the exact opposite problem, it feels a lot more barren and much easier to traverse, but the main land quest requires so much backtracking.

The new tools are boring and extremely janky to function, require so many different buttons to be pressed to use correctly and are much less useful and fun in the environment. When i first played breath of the wild, i could immediately tell that the tools given to me were incredibly fun to play with but these did not follow suit.
Not to mention the new tool menu is incredibly finicky and i often end up switching to the wrong ability because of this.

Overall, it definitely feels more like a remix of breath of the wild, and i would be hard pressed to call it any more than that. (still a good game though, but does not at all top botw)
This is essentially a second quest, with different dungeons, equipment, rewards, enemy placement, and difficulty buffed.
The original breath of the wild seems fun and interesting but in this game, some of the new major side quests seem oddly paced and QuIrKy to the max, they feel like instead of being made with some sort of intent, they instead made a bunch of hyrule’s bad hair day situations…

i can tell that this game is an acquired taste, and i would definitely recommend you play breath of the wild to see how much you like the world before buying this, as if you don't there really isn't anything else to look for than more adventures with recurring characters from botw.

Even though the main locations to the game are the same (with the addition of sky islands and the depths) , it doesn't feel very repetitive. It's like watching the second season of favorite show, you know the characters and the setting but there are twists and turns everywhere, the more you play the more you discover how many things were teased in BoTW. The mechanics allow you to be very creative and try new ways to defeat enemies.
I would like to have seen more parts of the story , perhaps even get to play as Zelda.

This game is basically a giant DLC for BotW. I didn't care for the original when it came out, I found it to be quite boring and repetitive with a very lackluster story that I just couldn't bring myself to care about. Tears of the kingdom is unfortunately that same game re-gifted under a different title. The cel shaded graphics are nice to look at, and that's about the most praise I could give.

Pros (in comparison to Breath of the Wild):
    *The gameplay is more enjoyable.
    *The map is significantly larger.
*The cinematics are amazing and have improved a lot.
*The dungeons feel almost like proper dungeons again.
*There is a greater variety of shrines.
*New map bosses and a plethora of new weapon possibilities through fusing.
*Overall, I estimate it to be 20% better than BotW.

Cons (related to the Zelda genre):
*While the game boasts impressive art and visuals, its appearance is becoming outdated and falls short in comparison to BotW's market at launch.
*The dungeons are still short and easy.
*The dungeon bosses are easy and lack clever design.
*There are practically no moments of hard thinking or struggle.
*The depths feel somewhat repetitive, and their design is not very appealing.
*I miss some of the old items, particularly a musical instrument and hook shot.
*Many Zelda fans are concerned that Nintendo might completely abandon the old genre, especially 2D. But please, Nintendo, don't do that! Keep both styles! A Link Between Worlds was amazing!

I honestly can’t also understand the people that are giving low scores because this is still a game that had a huge potential but it’s still a Nintendo Switch game, therefore the graphics are “horrible”. If a game like this can do what we’re experiencing in a limited machine, that means that it’s an AWESOME game. This game is full of things to do and the storyline is beautiful. If you have only bad things to say about it based on graphics or lack of innovation, go back to your PC or PS5 games that are wonderful for the eyes, but you get extremely bored after playing for a few weeks. With this said, there are flaws:
Worldbuilding; what happened to the old shrines and sheka towers?
Yiga: So far, I've been to the desert and seen NOTHING about them except once in the depths.
Abilities: Feal a bit awkward to use compared to the champion's abilities
Cut scenes: this could be me using headphones, but the mouths are not connected properly with the voices. Also, there is a ton of them, to the point where it is annoying

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll keep it short and sweet. This game is very good, it is not great. The things it does well it does VERY well. Ultrahand ability is pretty fun to play around with, a little clunky at times, but fun. The fuse ability was a waste of development time. Scrolling through a list of materials 600 times just to find the one thing I need to shoot a very specific type of arrow gets old super fast, you then have to choose it over and over again for EVERY arrow that you are shooting. Fuse could have been left out and no one would have really cared in my opinion. A lot of the same assets, a lot of changes to the over world to keep it somewhat fresh, but not anything substantial. The sky islands can also be almost completely avoided other than what you have to do to progress the story. The depths are a half baked minecraft deep dark clone that also could have been left out. Let me aimlessly walk around in the dark and look for light roots while hoping I have enough bloom seeds and having to go through the terrible UI every time I need to pull one out. "Temples" aren't temples, its a fetch quest type thing where you must go find 4-5 things with uninteresting puzzles. Also having to play this at 1080p at 30fps in 2023 is sad, it only gets worse when it can't even keep a steady 30fps. Intense areas will drop you down so far that you can't keep up with what's going on.

Ganon having character this time around is refreshing, haven't had something like that since windwaker. Final battle and the gauntlet you have to go through to get there was really good in my opinion.

Having an open world Zelda is great, but for story and progression I wish that it did have some path to it, not linear like Skyward sword, but more "This is the direction you need to head, do that however you feel it needs to be done" not "here's the entire world, go and do".

8 out of 10. Not perfect, I really do miss real temples the most, but overall a really good game.

-the freedom in this game is crazy, there is no location that the game forces you to go.
and the traveling system is way more easy and more fun by using the tower.
-beautiful and visible map. It is crazy that when you are up in the sky you can see all of sky islands and also the surface. It is wild to think about that this little device can load all of them in real time.
-creative mechanics. There are so many things to do with materials, Zonai gears, and your ultra hand.
Just playing with your gear and not continuing the story is also fun way to enjoy.
    -artistic designs
-very rewarding combat system -flurry rush, parry, making robots to destroy enemies.etc-
-various ways to play. Especially in the shrine, there are so many unique ways to solve things.

    The bad:
-when you use ultrahand, the frame drops -didn't bother me-
-Underground feels a little bit empty
-If you didn't like Botw, then you will not like it obviously
-a bit of potato display quality in the first area -where it has a lot of Ginkgo-
    - it can be confusing to press buttons cause there are kind of complicated.

Me, who have spent over 1000 hours in botw, constantly find myself lost in "the same map". there are also so much more content to this game. there is always something new to explore, or a quest to complete, they have really just improved on everything botw lacked on. oh and there's also the story. even though I have just spent around 15 hours in the game, the story so far, has been really engaging and overall just really good. If you're looking to buy this game, but you feel like there are too many negative reviews. Don't listen to them, this is really one of the best games I have ever played. Expand

Yes it has some fps drops, but it is already mindblowing that it runs at all in the switch, and we will have to deal with until we get the switch pro. At the start you might get bored or confused because of the sheer amount of stuff you can do, but the longer you play and get used to your powers, the more you will enjoy it. The game gives you absolute freedom to do shrines in many ways, travel the world with selfmade vehicles, or flying, or even riding a dragon. You can basically do whatever you can think of, you just have to be very creative, and people are not used to that in modern gaming because almost every AAA game is a linear "go there by doing" this, but not here, here it is more of a "go there in any way you can think of, just do it". And then there's the music. Botw's soundtrack was a masterpiece, and this does not fall behind at all, with some old songs from botw and a lot of new songs that are just perfect, they really went all out on that aspect.
Basically, play it. If you rate this game a 0 you have 100% not played it and are just a blind hater that doesn't like the fact that this is as good as it is and not the "Dlc" you all said it was going to be.

Don't get me wrong, some games deserve negative reviews be it for lack of quality or original content (or overall performance) and even some of my absolute favorite franchises have deserved this negative attention recently, but Tears of the Kingdom is not one of those games. I'm convinced people just want a reason to hate a game that does well. (Keep in mind, people want a reason to hate ANYTHING that does well, not just games. It's human nature.)

Like most, I was shocked at the price, however after having about 10 hours of gameplay in, I would happily pay $70 for it again.

BOTW was my favorite video game of all time, and now this may take the cake. The game is much more challenging right off the bat, and the way you approach certain enemies requires more thought than before. TOTK feels like an OG Zelda game, thanks to the added challenge which gives an ongoing puzzle feel, plus everything we all loved about BOTW.

The enemies have the perfect amount of health and scaling to make them fun to fight time and time again, and there’s TONS of enemies not seen in breath of the wild. Not only this, but the rewards for fighting enemies are far better than any in breath of the wild, and contributes to the gameplay loop. I can’t decide which rune is my favorite or the most useful because they are all incredibly useful in their own ways. All very well designed. As of right now the two places I feel it could improve are story and dungeons (keep in mind I have not fully played through either of these things yet). Since the game reuses a lot of old assets without fixing any problems the previous game had, I find it strange to see so many 100/100 reviews. The game is fun to play, most of the time. However, there are a lot of flaws right under your nose while you play this.

First of all, the game reuses art assets, textures, characters, locations, the whole map, music, and a lot of its gameplay.

First of all, the game reuses art assets, textures, characters, locations, the whole map, music, and a lot of its gameplay. For a Triple-A production that took 6 years, this is very little originality. This is all done without addressing a lot of the problems and mechanics that were bothersome in the first game.
There is another direct Zelda sequel that also reused assets. While some found this controversial, the game did bring completely new characters or sides of previously established characters, a new world and new map, a completely different story, new music, different characters to play as, and a different way to progress through the story. This game used concepts and assets but built upon them. Something I found lacking in TotK.

There are a lot of things that break gameplay, like menus and having to craft mid-battle. Since the new machines completely revamped the transport throughout the world, the Stamina meter feels like an unnecessary restraint to gameplay.

The few points of dark and mature themes in BotW have mostly been removed when it seems characters have forgotten about the champions who died 100 years before BotW. (Which felt rude at times) The cross-dressing and potential male Link-admirer have also been shoved into the background to refrain from LGBT topics. And the story makes it very clear 'nobody got hurt' which eventually made the stakes not feel very high. Especially compared to the stakes of previous games, where Hyrule and its races were threatened with death and world-ending endeavors.

Overall, if you enjoyed BotW a lot and want to do 240 shrines and 1800 Koroks instead of what we had before, this game is perfect. It adds new ways to explore what we got before and allows you to see the map from a different angle. But for people who expect (traditional) Zelda gameplay, a whole new game, people who didn't like BotW, or people who have played BotW a lot, this game won't have a lot for you.

It's best described as a glorified, expensive DLC of BotW.

Cada vez encuentro más cositas, enemigos nuevos, mecánicas nuevas, mapas nuevos y cambios en el que ya había, sencillamente es una maravilla.

A really good puzzle game. If you like crosswords, sudoku, rubik's cube, things of that nature, you will love TOTK. I'll just skip the ride. So just run around avoiding enemies, read tons of mediocre dialogue, and look for fun puzzles to solve. TOTK in a nutshell. Expand

It's Breath of the wild on steroids. 2+ time as big as BotW. Abilities are off the chain. Game is so intensely fun. Very very hard to put down. By far THE best game of this year. I don't want to sleep as it's time away from playing TotK.

I'm 20 hours into the game and it's amazing. Core gameplay is masterful, the story is intriguing, and the world is mysterious and beautiful. Nothing compares with this game as a single player experience (nothing, really).

People have rated this game 0/10 (I pity the emptiness of their intellectual integrity), just to bomb the review of a game of this importance and statute. Zelda Tears of the Kingdom plays with the player's familiarity of the Kingdom and builds upon it. Without spoliers, this game twists the powers on the player, fondamentally changing the approach to the world and the enemies. The change these "players" haven't even played more than 10 Min or even at all is really high. Zelda BOTW shocked the player immediately and forcefully. Tears of the Kingdom does the same with depths and SENSE OF PLACE I have never encountered before. Is that a reason this game is having high scores? Maybe yes, and maybe it is such a majestic masterpiece it takes patience and time to be understood. (Maybe a bit of brain too, but we know that is lacking in all review bombers). Expand

No one's here to read a college thesis, so I'll knock this one out, good/bad/ugly style (ugly being things that I wasn't a fan of but that don't affect the overall score).

The Good: -if you liked BOTW, you'll be happy to know all of its mechanics have essentially returned. -the new runes are mostly pretty good and shake up exploration in inventive ways. -the remixed overworld isn't
No one's here to read a college thesis, so I'll knock this one out, good/bad/ugly style (ugly being things that I wasn't a fan of but that don't affect the overall score).

    The Good:
-if you liked BOTW, you'll be happy to know all of its mechanics have essentially returned.
-the new runes are mostly pretty good and shake up exploration in inventive ways.
-the remixed overworld isn't perfect, but I am willing to admit they did more than I expected them to.
-the new areas are pretty cool. Spelunking is really fun.
-the dungeons, as the game calls them, are generally a big improvement on the Divine Beasts.

    The Bad:
-if there were aspects of BOTW you didn't like, you'll be disappointed to know that every single core mechanic has returned.
-using Ultrahand for building (it has other uses, which are fine) sucks. Stray from what the game *wants* you to make and it will rarely ever work. Just make bridges. They're funny and they actually work.
-while it doesn't come into play often, there are parts of the world where it's very clear the game wasn't built with your toolset in mind. (hint: because it was built for BOTW's toolset)
-the story is almost laughably bad. Same minimalistic approach as BOTW but with a far worse script. Ganondorf deserved better.

    The Ugly:
-no matter what the game calls them, these still aren't dungeons as Zelda fans know them. The Divine Beasts weren't terrible, but they left me feeling hungry for something better. Dungeons in this game are basically the Divine Beasts without the control mechanism. They are generally better, though.
-they took whistle-sprinting out. While it was a glitch and did need to be removed, it was really handy for getting around quickly. Having nothing replace it is really unfortunate.

Overall a fun game, but six years and $70 is a big ask for what we ultimately ended up getting, which largely does play like an DLC rather than a proper sequel. Not in terms of scope (the game definitely has scope), but in terms of what the game actually is.

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
