The least Zelda-like game in the entire franchise by far, full of building mechanics that complicate basic actions that could be accomplished simply by walking or climbing in the previous game.
Except for the underground, which is a boring and dark area, and the sky, which is quite small y wasted, Hyrule feels like a completely lazily recycled map.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is literally the best game I have ever played. It improves every aspect of Breath of the Wild, and even though I haven't finished the game yet, the 30+ hours I have played are by far the best experience I've had

The game reuses nearly everything from breath of the wild. Map is mostly unchanged, you still progress by collecting korok seeds, completing shrines, and going to towers that unlock map fragments/act as waypoints. They totally overstated the presence of dungeons, dungeons are essentially glorified divine beasts. Overall it feels like a DLC, and for $70, it's absolutely not worth the price tag.

Tears of The Kingdom expands on the previous game exactly where players found most fun: creativity. Link's new abilities are the natural evolution from his last adventure and, if you have played BOTW, you'll certainly enjoy this game even more.

The very begining of the game is already from the start, nothing like what we were shown in trailers. It feels very rushed. Then, you wake up in basically what it the Great Plateau except, in the Sky. I do mean it basically is the Great Plateau, even it's shape and structure is similar. They make you do 4 shrines (yes, the god-awful shrines are back) to get your powers then you go to the surface, dropping near a new village, which I thought at 1st was interesting to see an evolution here since people are gathering to rebuild Hyrule. Here, you get the paraglider and then proceed to a Skyview Tower, which is just a goofy ass Sheikah Tower (yes, Ubisoft's tower climbing to uncover the map is back as well...yaaaay

So.. am I reviewing Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom? You’ll never know.. because the first few hours of TotK gameplay are LAZILY identical.

Korok seeds, shrines, towers for visibility? There's zero added structure/innovation to the game's functionality. Everyone is fawning over a reskin with some new tools/powers that are even less 'Zelda' than they were in BotW.

Oh, and the framerate is absolutely deplorable.

It is difficult to succinctly summarize this masterpiece in words. Words elude me despite my greatest efforts, so the best way to describe the incredible excellence of Tears of the Kingdom is by explaining how it impacted my life. Prior to the game’s release, I was your standard big apple lawyer who did not have a life outside of work; I was no different to those World of Warcraft players who dedicated every single waking moment of their lives grinding hours away for a cause that - ultimately - was meaningless. My girlfriend (and eventual fiancee) of four years left me after months of only being able to spend, at most, eight hours a week with her. She said it was a blameless break-up, but I knew it was my fault, and even now I still regret that I didn’t spend enough time with her.. Shortly after she left me, I was dropped into a world of sheer loneliness, much like the chasms in the depths of Hyrule. My life as a lawyer felt more like that of a mining Mokoblin than a brave explorer on the surface. My days comprised sitting at my desk for 16 hours a day, journeying to and from the office for around two hours, and then sleeping for a maximum of five hours total. Eating a full meal was mostly a luxury, although I didn’t feel the urge to eat on account of my severe depression. I didn’t really live at this point: I became a semi-sentient automated creature that lived in a sort of twilight. I was aware of my existence, but felt no desire to engage with it. In 2022, Nintendo announced the release date for Tears of the Kingdom, the sequel to a game that I’d invested hundreds of hours into while I was still studying for my degree. I thoroughly enjoyed Breath of the Wild, and I was excited to see what Tears of the Kingdom had in store. I must admit that I doubted the extent to which Tears of the Kingdom could surpass its predecessor, a widely acclaimed game that is equally revered as a masterpiece. Still, I was happy to indulge into any activity to at least feel something. Fast forward to midnight on 12 May 2023. I had pre-downloaded the game in the morning prior to going to work, and felt some excitement for the first time, knowing I’d be able to play an enjoyable game; at the very least, it would connect me with my younger self, like a sort of nostalgic trance to alleviate the emptiness of my present day.

This. Game. Is. Incredible. The sheer freedom to explore; the freedom to test new weapons, foods, items; the freedom to build novel machines and traverse the sky, the surface, the depths; the freedom to speak with whomever, fight whomever, defend whomever, and create whatever. I was limitless. The period of creative drought that plagued me for years had suddenly - overnight - ended with a deluge of creative freedom and curiosity. There was no barrier to anything in this world; the only limitations in any moment were my creativity and commitment to solve problems. I was able to play five hours before having to go to work. I didn’t sleep that night, but I didn’t need to: the unprecedented excitement and thrill that I felt in those short hours of gameplay left me energised and hungry for more. It was as if I was reborn as a new human being. Work was miraculously quiet over the weekend, and I was able to dedicate 40 hours into the game, having spent only four hours a night sleeping. I did not move from my couch; I didn’t need to: I had nowhere else to be, as the entire world was right at my fingertips, ready for me to unlock every inch of the surface, sky, and chasms like a sealed gate of eon waiting to be opened. In my journeys across Hyrule, I began to reflect on my own childhood: the years playing different Zelda games as I grew up. It was as if every single Zelda game was designed to lead up to this moment, and all of my life’s experiences were predestined for me to enjoy it. I began to recall what happiness felt like, I began to remember what it meant to be free. I began to see that life wasn’t about grinding countless hours into a job to make enough money to live “comfortably”. How is life comfortable if you spend 16 hours at a desk with your back arched the whole time? When I fought my first temple boss, I remembered what it meant to be courageous and strategic; that sometimes, the best solutions are the simplest ones. My hours of gameplay taught me more about myself than my professional therapist did in two years. I wrote my notice last night, and I intend to resign tomorrow. I have enough unspent money to sustain myself for a few months, and I intend to delve deeper into this game to understand what further courage and meaning I can derive for myself. For my own life.

Much has already been said. Nintendo believed in their own propaganda they paid for back then in 2017. And this is why this game is what it is. And now, after they bought reviews for TOTK again, Anouma promises more "open world Zelda games". And all this knowing the open world formula was already dead in 2017 and BoTW was just boring walking simulator.

Whether you call BOTW or TOTK spinnofs, or DLC, fact is that we still don't have new Zelda since 2012. Therefore let's hope some indie studio will eventually fill this void.

The construction mechanic is surprisingly fun. I was expecting to be annoyed by it, but nah I actually really enjoy being able to have at it with the various pieces of technology and being able to tie them together with Ultrahand. Clearly Nintendo saw the crazy construction videos from BotW and decided to give people more to work with.

The weapons breakage does get annoying, and I'm much less likely to get into combat with it. Maybe if the master sword is similar to BotW once I get it back (I assume I will?), I can use that for combat and mining. Also need to figure out the best ways to farm rupees, as I want to get cold weather armour (done) and hot weather armour (not yet done) and start upgrading the pieces.

Anyway tho putting lots of time into the game, Nintendo knows its audience, and I'm apparently part of their target group. Am about thirty shrines in with the entire surface map unlocked, so it's time to start progressing the main story with a decent number of hearts.

Highly recommend to those who loved Breath of the Wild. Others, well, maybe try that one first.

Let's all be honest with ourselves. Forget the PS5/XSX and $70 price tag, If this were just a PS4/X1 game for $60 without the Legend of Zelda title, the narrative would've been so different. There is no way it would've scored higher than a 75 average. This game would be crucified by critics for low-budget graphics, poor draw distance, bad lip syncing, low unstable FPS and lack of innovation. Gamers would be roasting it by calling it a PS2 game. And then these game journalists have the audacity to rant and virtue signal over studios crunching, even though they are the main reason why crunch even exists in the first place, because every studio has to work at least 100 times harder than Nintendo to get a 90 overall Metacritic score. Playstation Studios had to crunch hard to become a critic darling with those graphics and over-produced cutscenes, but Zelda devs can make copy/paste shovelware and get treated like the Messiahs of gaming. I don't even want to hear about the Switch being underpowered. They are charging a premium next-gen price of $70, so I expect the same level of quality as PS5 and XSX. Not my fault these greedy cheapskates at Nintendo refuse to release next-gen hardware. There are hundreds, or maybe even thousands of indie games with higher quality than this trash for a cheaper price, yet get much lower scores from critics.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to touch this game again. Charging $70 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. Nintendo, you can make all the indie quality games you want. But when I get a $70 game with no guaranteed online multiplayer, that is where I absolutely draw the line. How dare you give me half of the game for $70. I might've actually had fun if it had online. That's the least they could do after increasing the price for this low budget game. It's funny when Zelda fans make fun of COD for being the same game every year. At least there are new maps and graphics every year, while Zelda is the same map and graphics in 6 years. It's mind boggling that this game gets universal acclaim for indie quality at $70, when others work much harder and get panned by critics and gamers. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support laziness

Amazing game, takes everything that made BOTW awesome and builds on it. You can sink hours into the game technically accomplishing nothing and still have a blast. Only negative is some frame rate issues when using ultra hand( mostly in sky from what I’ve noticed) but not enough to deter from the awesome gameplay or the immense interactive open world

But if you dislike the first game, I'm sorry to say that you probably won't find this any interesting because it basically have the same fundamental of the previous game and some flaws that exist in the previous game is still here. Without any spoilers, I'm just going to give my personal cons and pro about Tears of the Kingdom.

    The Positives
All the previous game mechanics in BOTW are in this game and some have even been refined.
New game mechanics have also been added to spice things up.
Huge improvement on the dungeons, with more interesting puzzles to be solved and conquer.
The game is visually stunning and imo the best looking game in any Nintendo game.
The soundtrack is just as good as BOTW if not better.

    The Negatives
    Lack of new enemies varation.
The game is just as grindy as BOTW.
The open world map is not as innovating as its basically about the same carbon copy as the previous game with some changes.

Is the game good? If you adore BOTW you would definitely love this, otherwise you probably won't. My gripped with this game is that it's not as exciting as the first game. The game just feel very familiar as the previous game due to the story taking place in the same map with some changes. Because of this, it doesn't have the same impact when I walked to a new place for the very first time and it takes out a lot of the wow moment for me.

Overall it's a really good game that have potential to be game of the year, but it does comes with its own flaws as well.

    - The sky islands (after the tutorial) feel almost the same as each other.
    - The world is less interesting to explore as I already explored it in Breath of the Wild.
    - The voice acting is very odd. People don't talk like that.
    - The game runs terribly on the Switch. Every time I use Ultrahand it drops to 20 FPS which is unpleasant as you have to use it all the time.
    - The menus are tedious to navigate. Attaching arrow heads manually with every shot is frustrating and having to drop an item to fuse it to a weapon is irritating.
    - The controls are not generally re-mappable and are often frustrating.
    - The combat is very flat, the weapon variety is largely limited to appearance and damage numbers. Yes, I can attach an object to a weapon, but most of the objects just change the knock-back and whether it does more blunt or sharp damage, the animations don't change.
    - Flurry rush has a very strange activation window which doesn't really reward dodging out of danger at the last moment, just dodging at a specific time.
    - Observing most of the story as flashbacks is boring.

I wish more developers would focus on the FUN and less for how many needles their cactus has, ray tracing and **** like that. I love that I can play it as a casual player and enjoy it, but more skilled players can find their challenge there as well. This open world is just on another level. I do not feel it forces me to grind just to progress the story. Most probably there are quests like bring me 6 goblin horns, but I cannot remember any like that. I do remember quests like that in other games which is usually very boring. (world of warcraft, Assassins creed, The Witcher,...) If someone wants any resource from me, mostly I do have it already just from messing around and if I do not have that, It usually send me to some cool cave or do some cool puzzle. The great thing is, that you can just mess around searching for new cool areas and things to do without actually wanting to progress in a storey... and when you get bored you just can go with the story, or skip most of the story - it is up to you... If you do not like doing something, you do not have to do it. Of course if you want a certain armour to feel good, well you probably need a little bit of grind for rupees or resources.. :-). Two things I do not enjoy that much are - I kinda like to be attached to a nice weapons so them breaking is breaking my heard. But i get it. If they were not breaking, everyone would just find how tho get the best weapons at the start of the game and would be OP right away. It would be nice if I could see at least when it will break. Something like a number how many hits it has left or something. I also do not like that I do not regenerate hearts over time but have to cook... all the time. Those are the two things I do not enjoy that much, but I get them. It is a great game for everyone. Expand

The sense of adventure this game gives is fantastic. I keep finding new challenges and new little secrets everywhere. Anyone giving this game a 0 hasn't touched the game. Every detail this game gives in this massive world tells us why it took this long to make. I'd happily wait 6 years for games like these. Expand

GOTY sin lugar a dudas. Siempre tienes cosas que hacer y si quieres ir a un lugar ten por seguro que vas a ver más cosas que te llamen la atención y al final te acabarás perdiendo por el mapa.

I saw that people started to review bomb this game. When I started thinking I couldn't find any good reason as to why they would. After spending atleast 30 to 40 hours in this game, I can confidentiality say it isn't anything lower than an 8, but if you really hate it then you probably only hate it because you hate Nintendo and haven't played it. After spending atleast 30 to 40 hours in this game, I can confidentiality say it isn't anything lower than an 8, but if you really hate it then you probably only hate it because you hate Nintendo and haven't played it. That alone isn't even a good reason, yet of course people will still be dumb and come on here and review bomb it. So I decided to atleast help with that by adding my thoughts on the game and why it might just be one of the best games ever made.

    1. Starting with reason one being that this game is everything that someone could want from a sequel to one of the best games ever made. It adds upon the things that made the first game so good, it learns from the very few mistakes the first game made. Such as forcing people to buy amiibos for the best items in the game, instead in their game it gives you stuff that's simply cosmetic and good early game but nothing amazing by endgame.

    2. In reason 1, I mentioned it adds upon the parts that made the first game so good. And a few of those things were letting the player choose how they wanted to play the game, how they approached a fight a puzzle. In this game they lean into that much more with the 2 main new abilities, with those being fuse and ultrahand, allowing you to make a weapon which normally sucks into something good, or allowing you to make a robot or even a korok torture device. Both let you do so much. It's great because it let's the player have more fun by deciding what they want to do rather than be told exactly what to do.

    3. My final point is that the map which people had complained before seeing it that it'd be hyrule eith some sky islands and wouldn't be that different. Well in the end it is way different with some large variations aswell as instead of small ones people were expecting. And because people kept complaining that it was basically a dlc, they said things like "why pay 70 bucks for dlc" and "what's so next gen about this to be 70 dollars". The reason they priced it at 70 is because they knew no matter what people would buy it, by the looks of what the internet has been saying they weren't wrong. With all the people who said it was a glorified dlc being proven wrong we can now see its a true sequel by doing what most don't and that's make a better game by learning from the firsts few mistakes like I said earlier. By doing so this game has become a game that clearly deserves the price tag because it is one of the best games ever made.

To close this all up with a nice little bow, I want to point out that the people review bombing this game can't change the fact that this game is great and that people will buy it. And even with their crappy reviews with 0 true statements about the game I just would like to remind anyone who's read this far that the game is good if you didn't enjoy the first for whatever reason, you won't like this one and that this game was made by people who love the ip and care. Nintendo as a company has fallen into being scummy from time to time but when have other companies not. Like we've just going to pretend sony hasn't tried to sabotage xbox gamepass? In the end the people who make the game are different from those who publish it. Buy it if you want to and buy it if you don't. The game runs great with frame dips for less than a second when using ultrahand with a lot of stuff on screen, but otherwise no dips. The graphics aren't bad same as the first time in that aspect but slightly elevated. Thank you for reading this far and have a good day

In dozens of hours of game experience, I have been experiencing Eurake moments. These moments have nothing to do with pictures, plots, or music, but just my connection with the game design at that moment. In other words, this is link.
Today's game industry is getting bigger and smaller in a sense. It is getting closer and closer to Hollywood, but farther and farther away from the players.

However, the creators of Tears of Kingdom and The Legend of Zelda are still doing what they should be doing, which is what other game production companies should be doing, just like [Elden’s Ring] and [ it takes two] did the same, so they got TGA.
The game experience of Tears of Kingdoms is full of fun, and fun is the highest evaluation of a game.
At the same time, it is also a game with a very different style and content from its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, and I am very happy to see it, because the same means stagnation, and change means progress and the future.

Tears of the Kingdom is an amazing game, and I want to both talk about what I liked, as well as address some common criticisms of the game: Story: I haven’t completed the story yet, but from what I have experienced, it’s really good. Not as strong as other games in the franchise, but definitely feels like it’s following in the footsteps of the more traditional Zeldas. A new version ofTears of the Kingdom is an amazing game, and I want to both talk about what I liked, as well as address some common criticisms of the game: Story: I haven’t completed the story yet, but from what I have experienced, it’s really good. Not as strong as other games in the franchise, but definitely feels like it’s following in the footsteps of the more traditional Zeldas. A new version of memories are back, and while those memories are great, it is a little disappointing that we don’t get to play through them. The dungeons, at least the ones I’ve done, are very solid. They all have unique themes, and unique bosses. They do have a similar progression in all of them; activate a set number of things to unlock the boss. Don’t expect them to be on the quality of OoTs forest temple, or SS’s Sandship, but they are much better than the divine beasts. The bosses are pretty great, and their music is amazing. The boss of the Rito dungeon is especially memorable.
Performance: TotK runs pretty well on switch, honestly a little better than i expected. It’s a solid 30 fps, which for a single player game is still really good. There are slight performance dips here and there, mainly dealing with large groups of enemies and lots of explosions. It’s also important to consider that the Switch is not incredibly powerful, so its performance is still good. As for graphics, it’s the same cell-shaded look as BoTW. I love the art style, but it’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea.
Combat: Weapon durability is still a thing, though fuse does address is to some degree. It hasn’t been fixed the way I would’ve liked, but it is slightly better. Overall the combat is the same, though Links new abilities and new enemies make it a lot of fun. Additionally, enemies seem to have more health than in BoTW, and hit a bit harder.
Map: The world is the same Hyrule as BoTW, but with several changes. New towns have been created, and some old areas are completely changed. While it does feel familiar, it’s changed enough to be fun to explore. The underground area is huge, and is pretty fun to explore, though I would’ve liked more diverse underground biomes. The sky islands are really fun, but are way too sparse. Overall, the world is really fun to explore.
Conclusion: overall, TotK is an outstanding game, and a great sequel. It improves upon everything that BoTW did, as well as adding its own new ideas. If you are a fan of BoTW, or of open world games, I highly recommend. It’s my top choice for Game of the year.

Great game. I have ~30 hours in it and feel like I’ve done so much and so little at the same time. The audience score is low because of review bombers. If you liked BOTW, you will like this game as much if not more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been so excited about this game coming out. Waited 6 years for the release. Bought the OLED TOTK switch and collectors edition of the game... Just to be so quickly disappointed only a few hours after gameplay. The end game "boss FIGHT"is placed in a good spot, but also so misplaced at the same time. Please don't tell me he just sits beneath the castle waiting for you the entire game??? Ganon is the main villain, reanimated to reap havoc but does nothing the entire game but sit beneath the castle waiting??... I'm no pro at all and somehow ruined my whole experience with the game in the first 2 hours...Check this.

You're granted access to the castle grounds in the first quest of the game right, you're basically walking around the floating castle next to the chasm from the start so I figure why not, let's save the game and jump down into this chasm to see if anything cool is down there and BOOM! what do you know, as long as you can run past a few goonies the end game boss is down there and you could beat the game then if there if you want... Are you *#%*# kidding me?? Is this because of speedrunners being a big thing in BOTW? If he's just beneath the castle the whole game, does that mean he doesn't even show his face at all the entire game or push back in any way? Start a war? Raise an army to fight back against the land of Hyrule and its hero's? Please tell me I'm speaking too soon and y'all havnt just ruined this game by trying to hard to make a replica of BOTW.

No one's here to read a college thesis, so I'll knock this one out, good/bad/ugly style (ugly being things that I wasn't a fan of but that don't affect the overall score).

The Good: -if you liked BOTW, you'll be happy to know all of its mechanics have essentially returned. -the new runes are mostly pretty good and shake up exploration in inventive ways. -the remixed overworld isn't

    The Good:
-if you liked BOTW, you'll be happy to know all of its mechanics have essentially returned.
-the new runes are mostly pretty good and shake up exploration in inventive ways.
-the remixed overworld isn't perfect, but I am willing to admit they did more than I expected them to.
-the new areas are pretty cool. Spelunking is really fun.
-the dungeons, as the game calls them, are generally a big improvement on the Divine Beasts.

    The Bad:
-if there were aspects of BOTW you didn't like, you'll be disappointed to know that every single core mechanic has returned.
-using Ultrahand for building (it has other uses, which are fine) sucks. Stray from what the game *wants* you to make and it will rarely ever work. Just make bridges. They're funny and they actually work.
-while it doesn't come into play often, there are parts of the world where it's very clear the game wasn't built with your toolset in mind. (hint: because it was built for BOTW's toolset)
-the story is almost laughably bad. Same minimalistic approach as BOTW but with a far worse script. Ganondorf deserved better.

    The Ugly:
-no matter what the game calls them, these still aren't dungeons as Zelda fans know them. The Divine Beasts weren't terrible, but they left me feeling hungry for something better. Dungeons in this game are basically the Divine Beasts without the control mechanism. They are generally better, though.
-they took whistle-sprinting out. While it was a glitch and did need to be removed, it was really handy for getting around quickly. Having nothing replace it is really unfortunate.

Overall a fun game, but six years and $70 is a big ask for what we ultimately ended up getting, which largely does play like an DLC rather than a proper sequel. Not in terms of scope (the game definitely has scope), but in terms of what the game actually is.

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
