I quickly lost interest in hard mode. The "cosmetic" items are not any more than a curiosity, and the map enhancement is useless for me. But the trials have been really fun so far. All of the trials have been good fun, and have re-kindled my interest in the game after having put it down a few weeks ago. Expand

To start off The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is quite possibly one of my favorite games of all time and was from the very moment I played it. So with that being said I had very high hopes of this first dlc. There is a lot of things to like about this dlc and all the additions are smart and have great uses within the game but the one thing holding back this dlc from true greatness is that I can't shake the fact that most of the additions should have been in the game out the gate. In example the new ability to fast travel to custom point and the mask that helps find korok seeds. Having played the game for already upwards of 200 hours I just feel as though a majority of this stuff would've simply been more helpful if I had these tools during my 200 hours of play not after the fact. The hero's path is also a cool addition but honestly after I looked at it once or twice the luster of it was gone. The biggest saving grace of this dlc though is undoubtedly the master trials however. It's undoubtedly one of the best quests in the game with quite a bit of length to it and it features probably the most adrenaline packed fun the game has to offer. Also the masters sword having double power by the end of it all is a great reward. 60 damage isn't the highest dps weapon by any means but given the masters sword non-breakable nature it more than makes up for it. Overall my suggestion for this dlc is that if you haven't played the game at all then you should totally buy this dlc with it for the helpful tools that it allows you to have as you play through the game for the first time or if you really are just that huge of a BotW fan than I recommend it as well. Otherwise though if you have already dumped as many hours into the game as I have I would suggest simply waiting for the second dlc to come along with the new story content and enjoy the whole thing as one big expansion. 7/10 Expand

If you've beaten the game already, the max Master Sword upgrade reward from the Trial of the Sword doesn't really serve much purpose, but the Trial is still pretty fun - albeit perhaps flawed in the sense it forces you to meticulously plan your approach rather than solely challenge your abilities with the game's combat mechanics (like Twilight Princess's Cave of Ordeals did). Losing everything at each difficulty stage of the Trial is kind of cumbersome, but I suppose that's the point. The challenge is entirely in that you have to scramble (or slowly and stealthfully search) for viable weapons/equipment to use. For most of the Trial you're armorless and opportunities to actually cook meals (with the exception of single ingredient stuff) is after boss encounters, so getting hit is problematic. Stronger enemies may one-shot you, and if they don't, you'll wish you had some hearty meal. I had the most trouble with the Beginning Trials (mainly because of unexpected one-hit deaths), but I breezed through the other Middle and Final Trials pretty darn easily. In the end, I was pretty disappointed. I wanted more.

The new costumes are awesome, but ultimately even their addition don't warrant the $20 price-tag for the DLC. The other additions to the main game, while useful for learning where you haven't yet explored in the massive map, don't serve much other use other than making things slightly easier (like if you don't have an item necessary for completing a side quest and you need to quickly warp back to an exact spot or something).

Master Mode is a fun little challenge, but nothing really to write home about.

I guess my biggest complaint here is the price. None of the additions are bad, but the cost should at least be half of what it is considering what's really available. Fingers crossed for a stronger second DLC.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - The Master Trials is not for everyone. There’s no new story content, and a lot of the new content is trivial. A lot of the content just supplements an already perfect game. The Trial of the Sword, arguably the biggest part of the expansion, is a great challenge that anyone looking for a tough new experience should definitely try.

The trial isn't bad, but it's too short! C'mon let us see, Nintendo does it because Nintendo dont want to listen "where my DLC? Give my Money back!'". The truth cherry pie coming soon on the next expansion pass.

The experience that it offers is so different that I'm fine taking the plunge on it. Add to that the fun challenges in the Trial of the Sword and this pack immediately heads back in the right direction. [Issue #29, p. 18]

All in all, this initial DLC pack is worth picking up, especially if you’re still toying around with Breath of the Wild. Granted, the next story focused pack is probably the more hotly anticipated of the two, but the gameplay features, additional difficulty, and the Trial of the Sword challenge are nothing to scoff at here. Definitely pick this up, it’s well worth the asking price.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s first DLC pack, while not essential, tremendously capitalizes on the game’s fantastic mechanics.
