An essential for any Switch owner (unless you’re a sonic fanboy waiting for sonic forces). Although the main story is really short, there is tons more in the postgame!

Another amazing game for the Nintendo Switch and one of the best games of this year! in my opinion, second only to the Legend of Zelda Botw. I recommend to everyone without second thoughts. Great job Nintendo!

No comments .... the best mario I've played seems formidable and I have not played much but I'm surprised every day ... it's wonderful, I think it's a good game, it has everything, although I think it's better with the joy-con separated. Since Mario 64 and galaxy arrive this is a bomb ...

The graphics look great and take advantage of the Switch's lower graphical power by using bright colors and a cartoony style, though this has been the same for years now. The music is beautiful, and always fits the scene it plays in. The only criticism that's not nitpicking that I can give is that as I've said, the story could use some work. I honestly don't mind though. And, my favorite thing, the content in this game is near endless with (spoiler amount of) Power Moons! It's a game that I really have trouble putting down, and I really can't give it anything other than a ten. Expand

Not only does Odyssey include a multitude of kingdoms that feel like self-contained mini "sandboxes" for you to enjoy but the main aspect of fun in Odyssey for me is the greater sense of movement in the game. "Cappy" not only allows for possession techniques that change up the Mario gameplay in drastic ways but it also allows you to perform tricks that makes Mario *feel* great.

The presentation is also great. The game is colourful and is screaming at you in the most delightful way possible. I've heard some people are not fond of the jarring change in art style within the game, which I understand and is a valid criticism, but to me I feel as this only emphasises the sense of adventure. Whenever you enter a new kingdom it is fun to see how Mario will fit in to these environment that are not what we have come to expect from this universe. Oh, and as always, the soundtrack is amazing which is expected after the amazing soundtracks of the rest of this series.

One of the most underrated things that Odyssey does is take elements of the more 2D level based 3D Mario games like Galaxy and 3D World and merges it with the more open ended level design of 64 and Sunshine. While each kingdom almost acts like a miniature hub world, the levels within the kingdoms contain the great and underrated level design found in 3D World creating a perfect blend the chronology of 3D Mario; not to mention the 2D sections which are beautifully presented in the game.

I love this game so much.

It's 3D Mario to perfection. Amazing callbacks to Mario's past, gameplay with the right amount of challenge, pulling all the best things from SM64, Sunshine, 3DLand/World, and Galaxy/G2. Movement is fun, the visuals make me happy from start to finish.

Graphically it was really fantastic, a really fun game world although NPC design was rubbish.

Music, with the exception of the end of New Donk City level, which everone knows and is a fantastic song, I literally can't remember the music to this game.

Gameplay, I found the controls weren't my favourite and occasionally a wall next to me would fill my entire screen and block my view at times causing me to manuever, which in some levels was really annoying. Just something grated on me a bit with the controls and made it feel very sluggish.

OK, so my review is probably up around 7/10, so why 5/10? I base all of my reviews on a fun to cost ratio and the fun just wasn't there. Here are the downsides.

A good few of the levels were boring and not very nice in design. Felt like they were fillers to add length to the game.

The whole game felt very fetch questy. Instead of typical platformer action it was a permanent moon quest. Being told find more moons to move on but I've been all over this level and bored of exploring it now - tough, go find more moons.

I was so excited when I got to New Donk City but I didn't enjoy playing the level (until the end). When I got to the end of the level though it was amazing and I remember being shocked at how brilliant and fun it was.

New Donk City felt like an amazing game end finale but it wasn't and going back to normal levels after that was totally deflating and I was starting to want the game to end. I wanted to complete it and I did and it just dragged from this point. I think I may have scored higher if they skipped straight from New Donk to the last level and made a shorter game that didn't drag.

Again like New Donk City, the last level was amazing, I won't spoil it but it was a grand excecution of imagination again but when the game finished it just put a sort of new level and boss challenges and left it feeling like I had more to do and uncompleted, I was getting too bored to play more and the completion that was satisfying and funny, now felt incomplete again, I found myself running around the end world wishing it wasn't there.

I don't think the levels were as much fun as Mario Galaxy and it didn't have the frantic, fast fun of Mario 1 and 3. It got tiresome and felt repetitive as the objectives were tons of mini fetch quests and not level completion.

I feel a bit mean rating a 5 because two of the level ends, were two of my favourite moments in gaming and the ideas and production were out of this world but two perfect monents and great ideas didn't make the entire rest of the game fun. If those two brilliant parts didn't exist this probably would have been a 3/10.

A game filled with great ideas, totally hampered by boring, repetitive gameplay. A shame really, so much lost potential.

It isn't like 64, Sunshine, or the Galaxy games, but I'll elaborate to avoid being called nostalgia-blind. This game has few exciting or challenging platforming sections, and the missions aren't very fun. It just lacks the personality that the previous games had. Moons are very easy to get, often involving simple tasks such as groundpounding a spot on the ground (there are only a few moons that are like this). Other moons require things like collecting a series of music notes, opening random treasure chests, or making female goombas fall in love with you. You can just do a bunch of those tasks until you get to Bowser. You can go into a world that has a huge problem on their hands, do some random stuff to get moons, and then say "OK bye, deal with it yourself". One thing I see a lot of content creators praising the game for is attention to detail, like how there are three different ways to enter the Odyssey or some small aesthetic things. Things like this are good to have in games, but I largely prefer greater aspects of the game. Another thing I want to mention, and this isn't going to affect the score I give the game, is that Mario's voice clip for throwing Cappy is extremely irritating. One thing I will give this game credit for is the movement. It is very fun to move around in this game and while Mario is still missing some moves such as diving, spinning, and punching, the moveset is completely okay and I'm glad the developers didn't make the game easier than it already is by adding more moves. The game's soundtrack is okay. I honestly can't find many pieces that I find particularly good, although there are some. Especially after playing Galaxy, I did expect more from Odyssey's soundtrack. Most pieces are just OK. Overall, this game didn't live up to the hype. It's pretty short and, like I mentioned earlier, lacks personality. I can't see anyone in the future talking about this game and saying things like "I could never beat this section", "this part was super annoying", or "this character was really funny". It's not that I necessarily want a game to have bad game design or rage-worthy sections, just that I want it to be memorable. Sometimes annoying things like that help it and in the end make good memories. Otherwise, just make characters with more personality, or give more variety in its objectives. Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and Galaxy 2 all had things like this: unique objectives, variety, annoying levels etc., and those games have produced many fond memories: the victory of finally clearing a hard section, the laughs that some characters got out of me and others, and the fun of experiencing new types pf gameplay throughout the game. I think I've said enough at this point. The Galaxy games are great, and Odyssey isn't. Expand

First off, it’s simply not big enough and doesn’t offer enough content for me to justify that kind of rating
Secondly, the story is literally the same thing we’ve seen 1.65 Trillion times before in Mario games
Thirdly, apart from collecting every moon in the game and collecting all the outfits there isn’t much for post game playability

All that being said a 7,5 is a great game in my books and would definitely recommend it

The after game does introduce more challenging things... but not exactly exciting ones.

The game starts strong, the middle becomes rather boring and at times a drudge, and the ending is, OK I guess? It just doesn’t have the ingenuity of the Galaxy games, or the hectic multiplayer fun of 3D World. While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage.
