Such a fun game, I bought the switch for it and I'm not disappointed. One of the best switch games.

Masterpiece gameplay 10/10. It has an insane amount of puzzles, powers up and a variety of worlds, all are unique and interesting. There is no way someone will play this game and won't like at least one puzzle or one part of it.

The bad part about this game is the same as pretty much all others Mario's games, the story is lackluster, it is like a story on a porn movie it is just there

The bad part about this game is the same as pretty much all others Mario's games, the story is lackluster, it is like a story on a porn movie it is just there because it needs to be. C'mon, the game was released in 2017, I think it is time for a more depth story.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how good are the puzzles and the challenges, if the story isn't good the game is forgettable and just a pastime and for that, Mario Odyssey works perfectly.

You guessed it. Princess Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser and it's time for the mustached hero to save the day again. Admittedly this is my first time picking up another mario platformer since probably Super Mario 64 back in 1996. I was more hooked on the party games and the Paper Mario series versus the genre staple.

The new design for Odyssey is based around your new friend Cappy.

Admittedly this is my first time picking up another mario platformer since probably Super Mario 64 back in 1996. I was more hooked on the party games and the Paper Mario series versus the genre staple.

The new design for Odyssey is based around your new friend Cappy. Your old red hat bites the dust and you meet a race of hat people who just happen to be able to turn into special hats. The special twist comes from you can throw your hat on to a bunch of different things in the game. Mario physically takes it over like some voodoo mind control, while forcing all things to don a mustache. A T-rex with a mustache. Hysterical.

Platformers stick to the tried and true recipe. Collect so many of these items while maneuvering around tricky landscapes and enemies. With a skill that needs to be precise otherwise a quick death and starting back from the beginning. Odyssey hides a number of the special star items cleverly around each world. You only need about 10% of the total stars to progress through each world if you want to rush down Bowser. For the collectors out there, there is definitely a time sink waiting if you want to 100% the game.

Overall I enjoyed my time jumping around the different creative worlds in Odyssey. The levels were beautiful and all based around the theme of the world. Samurai, Dinosaurs, Snow etc. There were even outfits you can spend coins on to buy world outfits and make your Mario look flashy. Or spend 1000 coins to have your Mario run around in his boxers. Whatever your heart desired.
The annoyances came from the 3D platforming. Gone are the easy days of 2D side scrolling where you just worried about forwards and backwards. It takes precise control making the timed jumps needed in most levels, using the switch joy-cons as intended, one wrong slight angle and you are plummeting to your death. Jumping down from a height and thinking you will land safely, only to overshoot it by a hair and again….die. Frustrating but not terrible.

Quite possibly the best 3D Mario game to date. Everything that was an issue with the previous games; Mario 64's age, Sunshine's jankiness, and the Galaxy games' linearity were all fixed.

High quality, but VEEEEEEEEEEERY casual and boring platformer. Collecting moons in this game it's too easy and have no challange. Bosses nothing more then shame, 3 hits - you win. Better buy other Mario games on Switch, neither this one.

Super Mario Odyssey is without any doubt the funniest game I have ever played and it reminded us what a game should be. Many know the iconic phrase that the president of Nintendo America Reggie Fils-Aime said in E3 2017 "... [the game] if it's not fun, why bother? ". Super Mario Odyssey builds its legacy on this phrase, as every single level from the start until the end is a joy.
When I played the game for the first time, I felt so happy that I cannot remove the 2 meters wide grin I had on my face.
Each single NPC, character or enemy can be controlled with your new friend Cappy, that let turns Mario into whichever he trows his hat into. Even object like trees can be controlled. Why would you want to become a tree? Because you can! Because its fun!
Every level it's unique and lets the player choose how to approach it. For every platform challenge, there are at least two ways of dealing with it, making it extremely flexible and replayable. The only exception in what you can and cannot transform are the bosses (which in one case you can transform in it). Even with all the possibilityes you have, I think that Super Mario Odissey has just scratched the surface of it's capabilityes, has instead of keep using one mechanic for long, it immediatly hits you with a new one.
The music are not to the usual Mario game standards, they are to a Super Mario 64 / Galaxy standard. Just magnificent piece of art.
The art direction is possibly the best in any other Mario game, has you never have too much of a single color at screen, but with each level, the personality of the world changes, making you feel differently based on which level you are playing.
There is so much potential that I cannot explain how much I'm begging a sequel to this incredible masterpiece, trully an incredible gaming experience that must be played at some point.

Overall, Super Mario Odyssey was a strong entry in the Mainline Mario series that I thoroughly enjoyed!

So let's just begin, the game has 14 kingdoms to explore (17 if you also count Mushroom Kingdom, Dark Side, and Darker Side which are the post-game kingdoms) and they are all amazing and unique in their own way, of course there are some I don't like as much as the others, most notably Snow Kingdom, but all of them are still really good. The game focuses on collecting Power Moons and you need to get enough to escape the kingdom and reach the next one. Most kingdoms are filled to the brim with stuff to explore and some kingdoms, like Sand Kingdom and Seaside Kingdom give a more open-world vibe to the game, but then others like Cascade Kingdom and Lake Kingdom
focus a bit more on the linear sub-areas (Which I also really like). This review would probably be too long if I
would have to talk about every single kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey and how great they are, so I'm not going
to right now. Other than Power Moons there are also Regional/Purple coins to collect in each kingdom, generally
the larger kingdoms have 100 of them and the smaller ones have only 50, while the ones that are just boss battles, (Cloud Kingdom, Ruined Kingdom etc.) don't have any, there are also countless souvenirs and music tracks to collect, and you can play any music track you want at any time you want, which is a pretty cool bonus feature. Now, you might have noticed I still haven't mentioned the main gimmick of this game, the captures. I love the captures in this game, some of them are practically useless, some of them like the spark pylons are extremely important and are basically necessary to beat the game. I like the gimmick because of how unique it is and it's a bit of a break from getting the exact same power-ups every single time in Mario games. Other than that there's not much more to talk about other than the outfits, which were a cool bonus feature too where you can dress up as a lot of outfits (Mostly themed to the kingdom they're bought in). And Luigi's Balloon World, which is a fun extra side-mode where you try to pop balloons that other people placed in a certain kingdom, or you can hide balloons and make other people try to find them. So, overall I love Super Mario Odyssey and it is and probably will always be one of the best Mario games ever made. Thank you for reading.

It was almost 10 years since the last full blown 3D Mario game, Galaxy 2. My first playthrough of this game was very fast, I was shocked to see the credits scrolling on my screen after barely 10 hours of gameplay. Though it was probably my own fault, since I only collected the bare minimum of required moons to run the ship. My second time around with the game was much more gratifying since I tried to collect as many moons from each world as I could. Even so, I felt the devs should have increased the required amount of moons needed to fuel the ship.

The underlying structure of game progression is the same. Collect a number of these, unlock new worlds, get to Bowser. But I love the fact that the game didn’t boot me out of the world after collecting a moon. This meant each world could have a crap ton of moons, without any discontinuity. Most of them involved a clever puzzle, mini-game, or hiding spot. Among my favorite were the classic 2D platforming sequences. The gameplay really wasn’t anything special, but something about seeing the oldest Mario game, in the newest Mario game made me smile. Other moons warped me to a separate mini platforming game, usually with a little twist. Most were pretty fun, and changed things up a bit.

And we can’t talk about Odyssey without talking about the cap, which basically made Mario into Kirby. Taking control of classic Mario baddies was a lot of fun. Even just running around as a goomba was amusing. Each had some ability that would help level progression. Goombas could walk on ice. Latikus could fish out moons. Tanks could blast through rock barriers. Flying drybones could get my past lava. Just a bunch of cool abilities. I found myself throwing my hat at every moving thing to see if I could posses it. My favorite by far were these long legged nut enemies. Winding them up to reach places was a neat way to explore the forest world.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
