I was really really excited for this game. Nothing I love more than a 3D mario game. Sadly it's not quite up to snuff. My main issue is that it's just too easy. Sure they can hide stuff in a level and finding them can be a challenge, but there is very little actual platforming and none of it is particularly challenging. Super Mario Odyssey is by far the best 3D Mario title that Nintendo has ever produced. It owes so much of it's success to Super Mario 64 and is extremely creative and innovative with the new "Capture" mechanic. However, I am only giving t a 9 out of 10 because of the issue with the motion controls. While they are appreciated, Nintendo could easily map these motion control options to actual buttons. For example, rather than having two buttons to throw Cappy, have one to throw him and one to do the spin attack. This issue could easily be solved in a patch or update though, and when and if that does happen, I would increase my score to a perfect 10 in a heartbeat.

The graphics in my opinion are absolutely gorgeous and are a massive step up from Super Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube and the Galaxy games on the Wii, outputting to 1080p 60fps when in the dock and 900p 60fps when in handheld mode, which is very impressive considering how massive the game is.

The main object of the game is to collect Power Moons, which are the equivalent to Stars in Super Mario 64. While Super Mario 64 had only 130 stars, increased to 150 on the DS remake, Odyssey boasts almost 1000, and that number could go up even further inf Nintendo decides to make and release DLC that increases the number of moons and kingdoms, which by the way, there are currently 17 kingdoms as of the time of writing this review.

Another great addition to this game is the various 2D sections where if you go into a pixel pipe, you come out the other side as a]m 8-bit 2D Mario, paying tribute to the original Super Mario Brothers game released on the NES in 1985.

What also amazed me about this game is Nintendo's incredible attention to detail. For example, when you enter an 8-bit section, the music alongside the game turn into an 8-bit version of itself and whatever outfit you happen to be wearing for Mario a the time will also be represented in 8-bit.

In conclusion, not only has has Nintendo produced 2 incredible games, Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, both of which are 10/10 quality on their new smash hit system, the Switch, but Super Mario Odyssey I think will go down as one of the absolute best video games... OF ALL TIME! WELL DONE NINTENDO!

Plus, the motion controls feel uneven and convoluted on first try.

Regardless, Super Mario Odyssey is still worth checking out. Great level-designs, unique details, crisp animations, and has that palpable sense of joy that most Nintendo games possess. The lack of challenges is a little off-putting, so I can't say it's as memorable as Breath of the Wild. Still very good. 8/10

I've seen people criticize SMO for being too easy. That'd be a valid complaint if the game was only the story content but there is so much more to this game. I personally look at the ease of the story content as a strength as it allows more people to experience the ending when paired with the wealth of content that opens afterwards for people to challenge themselves with.

The gameplay is both familiar and new, giving Mario his wide range of movement abilities he's built up over his history while adding some new ones using his signature cap. I'm personally not a fan on motion controls and thankfully even through the game tries it's best to encourage you to use them you don't actually need to. I played almost the entire game using the Joy-con grip and an occasional flick if I really felt like it.

As the name "Odyssey" implies exploration is a big part of this game. The locations are spacious and varied giving the player plenty to see and do. My personal favorite was without a doubt New Donk City. Everywhere you turn there's something to discover and I can see spending hours hunting down every last collectible.

I think the absolute most important thing in a game is how much fun it is and I can safely say that this is one of the most fun games I've played this year. This is one game that virtually essential for any Switch owner.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's face it. This game is really easy. I am not a particularly skilled player, and I got to the Bowser fight after a dayfull of playing the game. The Bowser fight wasn't that hard, but harder than everything else. I would recomend this to those who have never played video games before (it'll be a challenge at that level, but still fun) and for players who have played scince the NES. The game is shock full of a collectable called power moons, that you use to power your airship, the Odyssey. The game also has purple coins in each kingdom, ussually 100. Some are easy to find, some a little harder. 100% -ing this game will take a lot of time. This game earns 10/10 because:
    - Having Cappy as a companion is very usefull, and a fun twist on the traditional Mario vibe. Capturing enemies never felt "over powered," or game-ruining. But, rather, fun and a good mechanic.
    - The Moons are wonderful comparable with Stars in previous titles.
    - I personnaly like the way the Odyssey works. Some people seem dissapointed that it is not a hubworld, but I like it better than a hubworld.
    - The art style. Just wow. Mario never looked this good. And the addition of the new
    - snapshot mode is amazing. Very nice to be able to freeze and move the camera for that just-right capture. Similar to SSB for 3DS and Wii U. 's camera funtion.
    - Never a dull moment. I would say this is one of the best games I have ever played. No joke.
Mario Odyssey has gotten mostly good reviews, but some dislike specific aspects. I think that if you have a Switch and can find $60 you almost absolutly must buy this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where do I even begin. After spending 3 days playing and paying my life into this game, and just starting my second playthrough, I am extremely pleased to say that Nintendo is on a roll this year with their newest podium console. Both this game, Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe reinforce that fact and despite the Switch's multiple flaws and technical issues since its launch back in March, I truly believe this year is one of if not Nintendo's best years of gaming since the iconic year of 1985. Though onto the game. After my full playthrough and grinding in getting as much moon's as possible, I can definitely consider this game (along with Breath of the Wild) a masterpiece. From the start to finish, this game truly represents an exciting, creative and outstanding (as the title suggests) odyssey. Our Italian plumber friend does not stop with his adventures in defeating Bowser and saving Princess Peach ("WAIT, Why is that so familiar, OH YEAH!"), though this time Bowser seems more serious and intentional on marrying Princess Peach than I have seen him in almost every Mario game including Sunshine. Mario continues to impress me with his cunning and practical skills when it comes to completing these courses. Despite this being considered an open world Mario game, it would not be a 'Super Mario' game without those courses to further progress through the game. However the way that they have been implemented in this style is very very (about 10 more times) creative. Every single kingdom despite most being fairly small feature multiple courses, puzzels and secrets that you come upon when exploring whether it is on purpose of intentionally. And somehow, the game was even able to implement the classical 2D style courses that Mario enters via a pipe inside a wall, cliff, mountain etc. And even better, they didn't just put all of these mini-courses in for the sake of it, most of the time you will need to get through them if you really want to progress through the game and collect enough moons to power up the odyssey and travel to the next kingdom. On paper it may sound a little repetitive, but in reality it is not. Thats what I mean when I refer this game as creative. Every single kingdom is different and unique in its own way with multiple different courses and secrets scattered around the small kingdom where some can consist of up to 50 MOONS! Exploring further into the kingdom is up to the player however. Collect all the moons that you need from completing the main (3D) courses and defeat one of Bowsers mini bosses and move to the next kingdom, or keep exploring it like I did. When I did this I was and still am extremely ecstatic and intrigued of the amount of secrets and hidden courses to find all those moons. I haven't discovered this much secrets in a video game world since Assassin's Creed. Even Breath of the Wild wasn't this wild with its secrets. And Mario is not alone Oh No. He has a new companion! Not his brother Luigi, or Toad or anyone like that but a cap. Though not just any old or just an advanced version of Mario's own red cap (which is destroyed at the beginning) but it is an actual character. A ghost who has the physique of a hat who has many powers which include harming enemies when thrown, shapeshifting into a different type of cap and the ability that not only makes him stand out but make the entire game stand out over all the Super Mario games is being able to possess creatures such as goombas, frogs, wigglers and DINOSAURS, or enemy machines such as Bullet bills to literally transform Mario into a rocket or a tank to blow up everything (In some way). Without cappy, this Super Mario game would not be the Odyssey that it really is, even at one point in the game where cappy is abducted and you're forced to recue him without using any of his powers. Because of both the team and relationship Mario and Cappy develop throughout the game, this was not an easy thing to do as you're forced to get through obstacles using Mario's own (old school) abilities to rescue Cappy. It also proves that Cappy is not only a great companion but a necessity for Mario. Together the two of you are travelling through all the kingdoms, collecting all the moons, finding and discovering new things/secrets and defeating Bowser and saving Princess Peach (OBVIOUSLY) along with saving Cappy's little sister who is being used as Princess Peach's tiara and is most likely her companion. In conclusion, Super Mario Odyssey is yet another Mario game that does not disappoint in any way and another amazing Nintendo game to promote the Switch console and put Nintendo back on top after the failed launch of the Wii U. With this games surplus amount of secrets and hidden courses/puzzles, its content for the games main progression and all the versatility at your disposal with Mario and Cappy makes this game (along with Breath of the Wild) the best game for the Switch and the best Super Mario game since Galaxy released 10 years ago! There's a few objective problems with the game that nobody can disagree with, like the lack of a viable control scheme that doesn't include motion controls despite all of the duplicate button functionality. Makes the harder content unplayable or overly frustrating with the pro controller or playing in handheld mode. Even with the joycons, the motion isn't reliable for some actions, and the analog sticks are so sensitive at high speeds, some of the moons are more difficult than using a pro controller where the sticks are more subtle. This is big enough to take any game out of 10/10 contention. I feel like if a reviewer only plays on a television using the joycons separated from each other, they will never understand the pains with the other setups, and that's a very big problem for a console that is supposed to be as flexible as the switch and this is their flagship title.

I also think there are valid criticisms about the lack of variety and mechanics, as well as how padded out the game feels, although each person will have a different opinion of that. Once the novelty wears off, I can't help but think that Galaxy is just a better game.

I think this is more like 8.5 or 9 out of 10.

I would have liked the whole game's use of the capture mechanic to be like in cap land, where there were Winged Goombas that you could capture for fun. I didn't really like to capture many enemies though, I felt they were clunky and very situational. Some of the best ones like the tank, winged gooma, Tropical Wigglerr Flying Dino Dude and Dinosaur are fun because they shake up the game play so much. I was hoping the levels would be bigger, like maybe all Sand Kingdom size, but I know that it's quality over quantity. Some of the moons felt like Korok seeds, just because they were so easy to find.
I've been negative, so now what I liked. I loved the fact that Cappy can be used as a platform to jump off of. It made me feel like a bad ass when I could scale a wall from my platforming ability. The moons that have some form of a level I really enjoyed. Being able to jump from a high place and being able to get to a platform made me feel cool. Moving around felt fun, platforming was fun and the levels were never badly designed, maybe just bland at some points. The motion controls were really, really well implemented in my experience. The cap attacks like homing cap were easy to perform consistently. I have not finished the game, so I might redo this review if my opinion changes.

Nintendo are amongst the best in the business when it comes to producing quality games and that's especially true when those games involve wide open world's full of content that will satisfy everyone from kids to self proclaimed hardcore gamers.

Super Mario Odyssey takes the best bits from previous Mario games and mashes them altogether in this latest instalment. The first thing to strike me was just how gorgeous the game looks. Nintendo continue to amaze me with what they can do with the power available in the Nintendo Switch.

I'll not delve too deep into the story because it's a Mario game and by now I'm sure e all know roughly what the plot will entale. It's a fun story though that develops at a good pace. I'm going to concentrate on the gameplay because that's where this game really shines.

Super Mario Odyssey takes place over a number of different kingdoms each having it's own unique feel and design. There's much more detail than you might first notice and there's plenty for you you to explore. The game world's have been expertly created as you might expect from Nintendo but they're just so clever in how they're done it's staggering.

Super Mario Odyssey is a 3d game and the control scheme compliments it and works brilliantly, especially with the joycons. You can throw cappy (your new sidekick) by gesturing with the controllers and its on point with its responsiveness. Theres a wide variety of creatures for you to possess and doing so will help you to collect the in game currency and power moons that you require.

Speaking of in game currency, each kingdom has its own unique currency that you can use to buy outfits. They're plentiful and rewarding. You feel a great sense of satisfaction when you change Mario's clothes to better suit his surroundings.

One of the best parts of the game by far is the use of 2d, 8-bit style sections. You'll see the iconic green pipes going into a wall. Walk into the pipe and you're in a 2d section where you can enjoy a throw back to the 80' and 90's. It's a stroke of genius and is my personal favourite part of the game.

Super Mario Odyssey has been picking up perfect score from all quarters of the media and I'm sure you're wondering if it's really that good. In short yes, yes it is. The game is as near perfect as you could hope for and is just so much fun to play. Since the game landed on my doorstep it's been a race to get to the Switch as my kids can't stop playing. This is surely a contender for game of the year alongside Nintendo's other big success, Breath of the Wild. It's been an amazing year for Nintendo and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Maravilloso juego, su diseño de niveles es espectacular te pasarás horas investigando y viendo que puedes hacer dentro de cada uno. Los controles y la camara son una maravilla. Si tienes un switch y no has comprado Odyssey estas errando tremendo.

Awesome game. Great visuals. Insane amount of moons to collect and nice to see a game with actual content in it in this day and age. The game also keeps surprise you all throughout the game.
Best Mario game since literally forever.

Amazing. Just amazing. Let's get straight into the review.

The game looks stunning, feels stunning and the controls are stunning (sometimes).
This is worth a buy, and no it isn't your average Mario game.
The gameplay is fab! A free roam Mario game?.. Since when.. Since now....

GET THE BLIMMIN GAME. Nintendo is going against themselves for GOTY with BotW.

Love it, its more an 9.5 beacause a few things are not 100% great, but in general in loved it. The greatest thing was the main story, the post game feels a bit like i am doing this for nothing.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
