With the extensive map sizes, fast action pace, and high difficulty, Sundered is sure to keep you exploring and fighting for your survival for 10+ hours per play through. It is a satisfying Metroidvania title to close out a year of stellar offerings within the genre.

Sundered comes to Switch and Xbox One with the Eldritch Edition, a revision of the game that doesn’t include lots of changes but it does some fine additions like local co-op. If you liked Sundered back in 2017, this is a good excuse to come back to it in a brand new platform.

The industry may be drowning in Metroidvanias, but Sundered does enough to stand out from the crowd with flair.

A solid game, with a great art direction, but technically it's not what we expected.

Despite its flaws, Sundered: Eldritch Edition contains enough magic to keep developer Thunder Lotus Games intact as an interesting and viable studio. There is a lot to be found here that would usually keep me enticed if it wasn’t following last year’s more entertaining alternatives. If you are beginning to get Metroidvania-numbness, then it may be best keeping this game on your to-do list. But don’t sit on it for too long, because there are plenty of moments here that are well worth experiencing.

This gameplay loop really works for me, and while I sometimes wish I wasn’t doing so much backtracking, it’s not a big enough deal that I’m dissuaded from playing. If you, too, like this kind of loop, I think you’ll get a kick out of Sundered.

Sundered is a solid metroidvania with gorgeous visuals and a strong progression system. Unfortunately, the roguelike design and ongoing waves of enemies let it down somewhat.

The setting and story aren't as intensively thrust upon you as much as other games, but it is still a wonder to osmose absolutely beautifully animated.

My only complaint may be that some of the enemy types become kind of samey, but even then you will hit plateaus of difficulty increases where something old comes back five times more nasty and with new tricks that keep you on your toes.

All-in-all. Even as a polarizing metroidvania experience I strongly recommend checking it out on a rainy day. You may pleasantly surprised and then some.

    Best metroidvania on the Switch.
Way better than Dead Cells or Hollow Knight.
One of the best games I've played on Switch so far.

Gioco sorprendente e molto sottovalutato dalla critica. Straconsigliato se avete amato Dead Cells ed Hollow Knight

Combat is fluid, but unfortunately imprecise and repetitive. It does do a great job of being a pure Metroidvania. I can't think of any other MV game that has as much freedom when it comes to backtracking, exploration, and ability-gating. However, that doesn't make up for its two main flaws: Random enemies spawning at any time gets annoy and repetitive quickly. Procedurely-generated rooms are not as fun as the carefully-designed and handcrafted rooms that are present in other MV games. Overall, I enjoyed it more than retro MV games such as ESA and Axiom Verge, but it's not as good as top tier MV games such as Hollow Knight, Ori of the Blind Forest and Guacamelee. Expand

Expand

The art direction draws you in then the procedurally generated world and button-mashing combat disappoints you.

Maybe it's the art style, or the weapons, the fighting style, idk. but there is something appealing to discovering new area's in the game and what's more you can also add powers to your arsenal. Once you die the area will reset and most of your powers but that's the beauty I think, the challenge in this game is what makes it appealing. Expand
