The art direction draws you in then the procedurally generated world and button-mashing combat disappoints you.

    Best metroidvania on the Switch.
Way better than Dead Cells or Hollow Knight.
One of the best games I've played on Switch so far.

You know Sundered, I really gave you my best effort. I tried so hard to excuse your problems and trudge onward. Sundered, you are quite likely the worst metroidvania I will ever play in my life. I don't why the constant jumping to here and there made me like this game. Maybe it's the art style, or the weapons, the fighting style, idk. but there is something appealing to discovering new area's in the game and what's more you can also add powers to your arsenal. Atmospherically and visually, it feels like a light version of Hollow Knight. But its gameplay is nowhere close as good. Combat is fluid, but unfortunately imprecise and repetitive. It does do a great job of being a pure Metroidvania. I can't think of any other MV game that has as much freedom when it comes to backtracking, exploration, and ability-gating. I can't think of any other MV game that has as much freedom when it comes to backtracking, exploration, and ability-gating. However, that doesn't make up for its two main flaws: Random enemies spawning at any time gets annoy and repetitive quickly. Procedurely-generated rooms are not as fun as the carefully-designed and handcrafted rooms that are present in other MV games. Overall, I enjoyed it more than retro MV games such as ESA and Axiom Verge, but it's not as good as top tier MV games such as Hollow Knight, Ori of the Blind Forest and Guacamelee. Expand

Did not like the mechanics of the wall jumping at first, but got used to it. It's just different from other platform games. You have to hit the jump and direction keys at the same time.

Couldn't get it to work with my PS4 controller on PC (win 8.1) with Epic Games version at first, but it's completely playable with a keyboard, and I eventually got it to work. Any complaints I have

Any complaints I have are minor. It's a fun, beautiful game with great music and no major issues.

The gong room is the first (and only) really tedious unappealing thing in the game. And I got to it over halfway through the game, so not too bad that 1/2 (99%) the game was frustration-free.

This game may feel glacial at first for a game of it's type, but as you quickly accrue powers, and choose whether or not to corrupt them to far better versions it quickly becomes a very rhythmic action game where you're ripping out your huge damage combos and skills between an elegant dance of crowd control and laser evasion.

The setting and story aren't as intensively thrust upon you as much as other games, but it is still a wonder to osmose absolutely beautifully animated.

My only complaint may be that some of the enemy types become kind of samey, but even then you will hit plateaus of difficulty increases where something old comes back five times more nasty and with new tricks that keep you on your toes.

All-in-all. Even as a polarizing metroidvania experience I strongly recommend checking it out on a rainy day. You may pleasantly surprised and then some.

Despite its flaws, Sundered: Eldritch Edition contains enough magic to keep developer Thunder Lotus Games intact as an interesting and viable studio. There is a lot to be found here that would usually keep me enticed if it wasn’t following last year’s more entertaining alternatives. If you are beginning to get Metroidvania-numbness, then it may be best keeping this game on your to-do list. But don’t sit on it for too long, because there are plenty of moments here that are well worth experiencing.

Sundered is a solid metroidvania with gorgeous visuals and a strong progression system. Unfortunately, the roguelike design and ongoing waves of enemies let it down somewhat.

A solid game, with a great art direction, but technically it's not what we expected.
