I can't say enough good things about Sundered. Developer Thunder Lotus Games took some risks by trying a few new things and fortunately, they all paid off. The visuals are top-notch, the combat is excellent, the upgrade system is robust, and the exploration is on-point. Sundered isn't just the best indie game I've played this year but one of the best games I've ever played period.

You'll have to fight the frustration that naturally comes with learning curves as steep as Sundered's, but if you manage to stick with the game, you'll find a lot to love here.

Sundered is a grandly accomplished Metroidvania effort that is complimented by some of the most beautiful 2D visuals to date.

Sundered is an amazing looking game that is not too convincing when it comes to gameplay. The combat lacks depth and there are only a few boss fights that are truly entertaining.

Sundered is a sight to behold, and has a unique world that I loved exploring. However, the controller-smashing cheapness of the combat, and iffy technical performance make it tough to recommend for those unwilling to embrace the grind and conquer the challenge.

A missed opportunity for an artistically-inspired metroidvania game in desperate need for a corrective patch.

I can’t recall the last time a game frustrated me as much as Sundered, and it’s not because of the game’s difficulty. It’s because it’s all so pointless. Countless deaths, endless repetition, thousands of sword swipes aimed blindly at illegible clouds of monsters… all endured with nothing gained, nothing learned, nothing I can bring with me to my next challenge. Jotun is one of my favorite indie debuts of the last few years. How its developers could follow it up with something as flatly wrongheaded as Sundered is entirely beyond my comprehension.

Travelling through nice-looking, but samey environments (sometimes you reach a new area and the only visual difference is that that the screen changes color), being attacked by aggravatingly unrelenting hordes of creatures, frame rate stutters... I wasn't sure I was going to keep playing. Slowly but surely, however, I got drawn into the risk/reward loop: fighting, dying, getting a bit further on my subsequent run and spending my hard earned points for upgrades on my skill tree grew to be addictive. Plus of course finding new gear to unlock new maps, Metroidvania style.

I wound up really liking Sundered, and would recommend it to anyone who wants a challenge. You will see your heroine, Eshe, get dragged down by tentacles (the equivalent of the 'YOU DIED' screen in Dark Souls) a lot of times, and you'll probably teach your PS4 a few words it's never heard when you finally succumb to a mob that will not stop coming, but the reward of getting a bit further and a bit stronger will keep those who like a challenge playing.
