    Pros :
    + Gorgeous animations
    + Looking good
    + Responsive controls
    + Huge skill tree
    + Rogue-like elements

    Cons :
    - Some framerate issues + microfreezes
    - Very long loading times
    - The map is boring to explore
    - Ennemies come in number and can be frustrating
    - Metroidvania part is flawed

(Note : microfreeze issue seems to be resolved with update 1.07)

Sundered is a pretty and nice to look at game, but even in Version 1.08, it still suffers from stupid technical issues that really can kill the fun...

So I won't tell you what others did before, but certainly point out what the developers should have fixed BEFORE releasing the game. There are bothering micro freezes in every minute I played and if you've got a PS4 PRO, you have to untick the Boost-Mode! Having the Boost-Mode activated, results in micro-freezes every 5 to 10 seconds and makes it unplayable - what a joke! Several crashes and more than once stuck while loading gave me a sour feeling about the entire state of the game. If there are too many objects on screen, the framerate also drops badly and once, I had some strange super-stutter going on and I had to kill the game by myself. For a 2D Platformer and considering a PS4 machine, loading times are also way too long and appear too often as well.

WHY is this game in such a horrible technical state?!

And why giving it a 7? It actually deserved an 8 if it would be finished and playable without technical flaws. The style and mechanics are perfect, grinding, dying, leveling up, very motivating and satisfying. I didn't like the ending, as it basically does not exist. And, sorry to moan again, beside some Mini-Bosses, there are only 4 (!) big Bosses and 2 eventually get missed (different ending), depending on how you play. And I certainly didn't want to play it 3 times, even I liked it allot...

Fighting through an onslaught of thoughtlessly implemented enemies through uninspired level layouts does a disservice to a game with such fluid animation and ultimately leaves me without want for seeing the magnificently colossal bosses.

It took me a couple of hours of play to determine whether or not I was enjoying Sundered. Travelling through nice-looking, but samey environments (sometimes you reach a new area and the only visual difference is that that the screen changes color), being attacked by aggravatingly unrelenting hordes of creatures, frame rate stutters... Travelling through nice-looking, but samey environments (sometimes you reach a new area and the only visual difference is that that the screen changes color), being attacked by aggravatingly unrelenting hordes of creatures, frame rate stutters... I wasn't sure I was going to keep playing. Slowly but surely, however, I got drawn into the risk/reward loop: fighting, dying, getting a bit further on my subsequent run and spending my hard earned points for upgrades on my skill tree grew to be addictive. Plus of course finding new gear to unlock new maps, Metroidvania style.

I wound up really liking Sundered, and would recommend it to anyone who wants a challenge. You will see your heroine, Eshe, get dragged down by tentacles (the equivalent of the 'YOU DIED' screen in Dark Souls) a lot of times, and you'll probably teach your PS4 a few words it's never heard when you finally succumb to a mob that will not stop coming, but the reward of getting a bit further and a bit stronger will keep those who like a challenge playing.

the world is bit too bland or too big to explore, in general it's still fun enough

Solid example of a Metroid-vania game based upon a kind of cyberpunk version of Norse mythology with attractive cartoony graphics. A decent little indie game, but I still expect a little more from a PS4 title.

The combat is fun and challenging (on highest difficulties). 4-player local co-op is great. Exploration is actually smoother than it might seem.

Not sure what all the negative reviews are about.

Sundered fuses a lot of ideas from different games and genres, and the result is a very unique experience, especially within the metroidvania genre. Not all these ideas work as well and some of them can be very polarizing, but if the game "clicks", it's one hell of a journey to the heart of darkness.

Sundered proves that procedural generation and smart, hand-crafted level design are far from mutually exclusive. The combination of the two, and the way the play off each others’ strengths makes this one of the most engrossing Metroidvanias I’ve played in a while. The random approach to regular combat leaves something to be desired, but epic boss fights more than make up for it. If you have even the slightest interest in Metroidvanias, this is a game you need to play.
