For some reason, everybody says Sonic Forces is bad, but it really isn't. It has great platforming sections, speedy sonic action, and is basically Sonic Generations 2. AND, add on a good storyline, HD graphics, and the best music a video game has ever had, and you get a great game, which because it is great, it gets hated on, like minecraft.

Alot the cover is kind of misleading it has knuckles and tails on the hero side wifh you may think there playable theres sonic shadow (wich is sonic just with a different skin now) classic sonic (harder to use then sonic and shadow and dosent belong here) and finally the oc (the best charachter in the game (gameplay wise) ) this guy/girl is suprisingly good to control the wisp are back (read my classic sonic in forces statement just with the wisps) and you use them in these gun like things called wispons

Music makes me have mixed feelings, some songs are pretty good and other ones plain boring or underwhelming.
Level design just dissapointing. At least we get to see almost every Sonic the Hedhehog universe character in action (Silver I see you). This could have dethroned or at least made Super Mario Odyssey tremble, but in the end failed, heck,

Pretty much from the start I enjoyed this game for a while, until I beat the game. In my opinion the game was lacking much needed detail and explanations. The game was pretty short and didn’t focus on the storyline and instead more on the game itself. The storyline of the game was decent but it could have been improved. It seemed pretty rushed and unfinished. There were a lot of plotholes and unexplained events. SegaⓇ tried to bring back Classic Sonic from a previous game but that character didn’t really contribute much to the storyline and they never really explained his purpose for being in this game. Same goes for the villain.

The main villain, Infinite, was not all that great. He really had no backstory or real reason to be in the game. In the games first cutscene you are lead to think that Dr Eggman ( Sonic’s arch-enemy) had created Infinite and the Phantom Ruby (basically The Phantom Ruby is a gemstone that creates powerful illusions that cause panic and confusion) when really that’s not the case. They tried to give him a backstory in the downloadable content but it was weak and unnecessary. Then there was a weird time jump where Sonic has been captured and Eggman takes over 99% of the planet. Sonic’s friends form a small resistance to battle against Eggman. This point is where they tried to bring in your customized character to the storyline but it was clumsy and really did not contribute much. The main levels consisted of two-dimensional levels for Classic Sonic and three-dimensional levels for modern Sonic and your custom character.

The final boss was a big disappointment. (Spoiler Alert) it was just Eggman in a super beefed-up robot powered by the Phantom Ruby. The game ends with the world being saved and Classic Sonic going back to his universe. So to sum it all up if the developers had spent a little more time on the plot and added more levels, the game could have been better. The levels were fun and the character creator was fun but unnecessary. I would rate the game a 6 out of 10. It was pretty entertaining but very short and (if given the time) I could beat it in one day. They sacrificed a good storyline for decent level designs. They really tried to cram too much into this game. It was not one of my all time favorites. A better game that I would recommend is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It has a great storyline and is seemingly endless.

The gameplay consists of 3 play styles, them being modern sonic, classic sonic, and your own custom character. The modern sonic and custom character gameplay styles are nearly identical, however the custom character uses a type of weapon known as a 'wispon' to beat enemies rather than the boost ability. These 2 play styles consist of moving forward and pressing 2 buttons every now and then. Modern sonic stages are all pretty much just boost to win, and the custom character levels mostly require you to spam the wispon and move forward. The classic sonic stages however are by far the worst, which is why i am happy that there are few of them. The controls feel very clunky, slow, and aren't even momentum based. Another problem with sonic forces is the story. Now i personally think that the concept was great, however, the way they included the story into the game was really bad. Lots of characters and plot points will just sort of come out of nowhere and then disappear the next second. It also seems as if SEGA forgot certain events from past games in the sonic timeline since tons of things that happen in this game completely contradict certain events from sonic's past games. Now not only are both the story and the gameplay heavily flawed, but the game is way to short. While the price has declined from about $40 to $20, they still should have offered a longer experience. While the game has tons of issues, we can't overlook the fact that the soundtrack is great. The songs that play simply make you want to go fast like every sonic soundtrack to this day. Overall, Sonic forces really isn't a good sonic game, or a game in general. I do not recommend this to anyone unless you are a die hard sonic fan making a collection or just someone who wants to try it out Expand

The music, as always, is near-on-point, with Modern Sonic's levels filled with instrumental music while the player character's levels are filled with techno-themes with surprisingly catchy lyrics. The Classic stages falter slightly when it comes to music. They use a Pseudo-Genesis sound, when they should have probably used a proper Genesis sound chip. Without it, the music feels just a little off. They are good music pieces, but are also an acquired taste.
Overall, a fun, if flawed, game, and one I recommend at least one playthrough.

Horrible level design, lousy "story", boring gameplay, forgettable music, lackluster animations (isn't it sad that Unleashed, a game from 2008, is still the best looking Sonic game?) and a dark tone that just comes off as forced more than anything else. This might not be the absolute WORST Sonic game, but of all the ones I've played, it's defiantly the one I've hated the most.

I was never challenged in any of the levels (except the classic sonic levels which have very bad level design and very bad control) and there is very little control over where you can go. In a game like Sonic Mania, you are given multiple routes to go, and depending on how good you are at controlling your character you can find all kinds of secrets and find different ways to play through the stages; Sonic Forces has one single path to go down, with a red star ring sometimes hidden in a spot that might be a little inconvenient to get to, and that's it. The story is very boring, but its not really badly written because there isn't much to it. I enjoyed the character creation and overall I did kind of have a fun time, but in the end it felt pointless and it made me sad that after Sonic Generations we got this. Expand

This game is filled with bugs that lead to unfair deaths, terrible boss, enemy and level design, and broken physics. Even though this game is not nearly long enough to warrant a 40 dollar price tag, it wasn't physically painful to play through like some other Sonic games.

Darker story taking the rules of SA2

However there are some big cons, specially the classic stages that are IMO the worst part of the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who has been a HUGE Sonic fan ever since I was a kid I have to say that I honestly do not understand the hate this game receives. Some are hailing it as some huge mistake, but I think those that do fail to realize what this series and this character is. I feel I must preface this review by tempering it with the perspective that Sonic has been and always will be aimed at a younger audience, so keep that in mind as I head along and try to keep that child-like whimsy close at hand while we review this together.

Sonic and all that comes with him encapsulates one thing that has never left him. Extreme self-confidence and a level of 'cool' that only comes with not caring whether you're in trend or just living by your own beat. That is exactly what this game delivers in all of it's campy, cheesy glory. To use one of the ever-referenced favorites of the blue blur himself, it's like a chili dog. You get a mystery mix of meats (characters and game play styles) on a bun (the game itself) smothered in mystery meats and spices (anything 'new' added to spice things up) and then covered in a cheese-like substance (the campy and deliciously cheesy dialogue, story, and characters.)

I think the real problem is that those fans that would pan the game don't want anything new. To compare, Mania was fantastic and a wonderful love letter to the games of yore -- the Sonic 4 we never got, even -- but it's all just remixes of an era far gone by. It's a nostalgia trip down memory lane. While it's a solid game with fluid animation you'd never really see in the actual 16-bit era, it's still a 16-bit game in an age where some engines have you seeing the pores on a model's skin. I constantly see this game compared to Mania and this is why I comment on it here.

To fully compare, Sonic Forces is just that as well. It's a love-letter to the age gone by with revisited worlds and gameplay similar to Generations... but the similarities stop at the "Modern Sonic" and "Classic Sonic" stages. There is an odd lack of Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic, but that makes way for stages which bring us into the biggest selling point that this game had. The ability to create your very own Mobian called the "Avatar" and have them join the fight.

For being such a big selling point, the character creator does fall a little short. Hats hover above the character's head, glasses float in front of their eyes, and you have to unlock EVERY scrap of clothing. You start with nothing but gloves and a pair of Speed Shoes ala Sonic himself. It would have been nice to have at least SOME costume customization out of the gate, but apparently Dobby must earn his clothing. The specie list also leaves much to be desired. I would have thought they would have at least had Fox and Echidna right next to Hedgehog, though Echidna is somewhat forgivable as the appearance of Shadow and Chaos confirm that the Adventure games were canon to this one, meaning that Knuckles is the last of his kind. I'd think foxes of a one-tailed variety would have made it in, however, as it was noted that Sonic befriended Tails because he was always made fun of for having two tails. With specie selection aside, there really is no excuse for the modeling faux pas of the floating accessories. Whether it's a game for kids or not, the models could have easily had things shifted around so that they actually fit instead of floating about the character and just looking terrible.

With that gripe aside, they did a good job of making the Avatar feel "cool" and really selling the "my character is Sonic's friend! Yay!" aspect in that classic, campy style that sits somewhere between SatAM and AoStH. Speaking of the two, the entire story dredges up feelings of both of the old cartoons of both fame and infamy. It takes a much darker turn, speaking of armies and torture while also having the over-the-top villainy that just makes it all laughable in the end. "Infinite" is perhaps the edgiest thing to come out of Sonic since Shadow and I couldn't help but snicker any time he was on screen.

Lastly is the music. There are more tracks with lyrics in this game than any Sonic before it, but the music felt pretty spot-on the entire time. It's certainly not timeless, but it's good enough to bump my score up a little.

All in all, the game was fun. It didn't blow me out of the water, but it wasn't bad. Controls were solid, I encountered no glitches, and it was a pretty clean run from start to finish. While the story isn't anything to write home about, it's that same enjoyable camp and over-the-top scripting that Sonic has had ever since his cartoon days.

All in all, it's a good game. Certainly not ground-breaking and playing a bit safe. Certainly not "great" by any stretch, but not "bad" either. It's a solid game that fans and newcomers alike can have fun with so long as they take it for what it is.

Silly, speedy, campy Sonic fun that's "too cool" to take itself too seriously.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game was alright going in. I thought most of the modern Sonic stages were fun, and about half of the avatar stages were fine and dandy... but classic Sonic. Ow. How did he get so broken. In Generations, he was fun to play, but here... you basically have to rely on the drop dash. The bosses early on were fun, but the last fight against Infinite and the fight against Metal Sonic were practically the same. And the final boss! It was the first phase was basically just a harder version of the Egg Dragoon, and the third phase was the final boss of Sonic Colours for the third time! At least the second phase was okay. Reminded me of the Sonic Adventure games... I should slap myself for saying that. Now the story... wow. You tried, Sonic Team. You tried to make a dark story, but you botched it up badly. Overall, I thought the game was alright. Certainly a passable game, but not one I would recommend. If you wanna get it, go ahead, I won't stop you. Overall, I'd say Sonic Forces was not a complete failure (Thankfully), as in I had a lot of fun making my custom character and most of the story is pretty good. But, that doesn't make up for the fact that the game has linear level design, and everything happening to quick. To sum it up, it's okay, but it could have used a little bit more improvement.

Sonic forces is known by people to be a mixed bag but do I agree? Lets find out.

Story-Sonic is defeated and eggman finally wins, sonic and his friends along with generations classic sonic and a new custom character team up to destroy eggmans army and also to beat the almighty new villain infinite. I like this story because it is something fresh and pretty surprising, I felt attached

Story-Sonic is defeated and eggman finally wins, sonic and his friends along with generations classic sonic and a new custom character team up to destroy eggmans army and also to beat the almighty new villain infinite. I like this story because it is something fresh and pretty surprising, I felt attached to this story and usually in sonic games I ignore the story a little and focus 100% on beating the game 100% but this one had a very memorable story, not to say sonic stories suck though.
Gameplay- The gameplay in this game though not the best is still fun, The levels though not memorable or ones I will remember much are still fun to blaze through.
Music-Though this is no crush 40 at all the music is still great like all sonic games even if its one of the weaker sonic soundtracks.
Graphics- Yea sure it looks a little better on ps4,pc and Xbox one but the game still looks great on the switch at 1080P even out of doc mode.

It's not a bad game, but after four or so years, it just feels like it ought to be better. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 35E]

Sonic Forces may be a misstep from this year’s Mania, but it’s still an enjoyable title. While it suffers from a host of problems with pacing and performance, it still is worth a weekend rental with its surprisingly entertaining plot and great music.

Sonic Forces may have created some hype but unfortunately, it mostly falls flat on its face as it quickly becomes obvious that this game is an exercise in disappointment. While the action runs smoothly whether on a television screen or on handheld mode, the game's short and unimaginative levels, the absence of gameplay mechanics that had become a staple of 3D Sonic games, the unreliable controls and the mediocre soundtrack all add up to a very flawed game from which a lot more was expected.
