All around disappointing experience that feels incomplete and leaves a lot to be desired, and especially falls short when compared to earlier titles that did much better with less development time and resources.

Sonic forces is a great but mediocre Sonic game Sonic has a mixed games with the past decade and for 2017 we got Sonic forces this game took a serious turn for the series as this game is 8 out of 10 this is Sonic forces for the Nintendo switch Some of the Sonic games have been worse some of them were gems in the series but what stands out the most is the game plays of the Sonic games so despite of how I love Sonic the hedgehog as a playable character it's I think he's one of the best characters in video game history I can say most of his games could be positive like Lost world or unleashed or generations but since then this plot is a serious as having been but really simple eggman took over the world tortured Sonic for six whole goddamn months and you get to create your avatar and you get these weapons called Wispons witch are weapons but each weapon has their own mechanic like fire hover drill void asteroid and many more and they all have capabilities you could do in the past games like lightspeed dash drill in the ground burst thin air and many more for your avatar because the customize them in clothes also skins from the DLC they do have DLC but I must get to them later before I talk about gameplay I had to go over to the missions these missions were upgrade your progress the challenges you need to complete during the levels like defeat five enemies in a row in a Stage something or maybe attack as many enemies as possible or maybe use a wispons that you never used these missions are sometimes actually really daily and there's are similar missions like the SOS missions if it's a blue SOS mission then you get to save animals from those capsules had to explore the level and find them and rescue the Avatar and the animals if you see red that means you had to complete a level with a different Avatar if you see green that means you get to switch between your own avatar and a different Avatar and once you fail at SOS mission by dying you can't do it ever again you have to do some other SOS mission or do something s*** there are 30 stages plus six secret stages and seven extra stages and three added stages and the shadow episode DLC you get to play as Shadow and these three stages then when you're done you get to play a shadow in modern Sonic's level no bosses really f****** stupid Sega I mean it kind of makes sense turns into the whole plot okay and plus that all four characters to play as modern Sonic Avatar and the classic Sonic and Shadow shadows the faster character so that you'll play as him and any other characters besides Sonic modern Sonic speak of the modern Sonic let's talk about his gameplay his gameplay is not bad but it's actually really great at the boost you don't have no drift you don't have lightspeed dash the homing attack like f****** smart genius I'm sorry gameplay I rather recommend more than the classic Sonic gameplay now let's talk about the avatar you can use different weapons into attack in certain ways like you've hit the cube Hammer the old enemies turn to cubes and you can get bonus from them just like Sonic colors Sonic colors is one of my favorite games of all time I suggest sonic forces being top 15 since it's the best I played I meant it's a great game that's why I give it an 8 out of 10 and and the Avatar is slow to the levels are longer then there is classic Sonic they took Sonic mania's moveset and made him janky as before i still think he could controls kind of smoothly but sometimes he has too much momentum sometimes he doesn't have it at all I can say Stages are pretty longer than the Modern Stage stages classic Sonic just in perform well as generations but is great to see him for no reason I like his gameplay a bit slightly bit better than the avatar listen listen I just don't like how slow the Avatar is the reason the levels are so short because he's God damn fast he is always having short levels but lost world has having longer stages than to recent counterpart I think what Lost world did the right is the longer and harder ranking systems because the ranking systems are f****** garbage in this game but okay though at least most of the stages I love such as egg gate Green Hill sunset heights capital city red gate bridge Network terminal metropolitan highway Null space and motor canyon there are skins for the Avatar we have to get the bonus edition of the game and last but not least are the boss fights that actually the best part of the game in my opinion my favorite is metal Sonic the three infinite fights I think are is the best rival that Sonic has ever witnessed besides metal Sonic and he's edgy as f*** and then the boss that people have a hard time for some reason is zavok.than the two eggman bosses one of them is the boss from sonic 1 in eggman's first fight than his 2nd phase he brings his egg dragoon then the final boss the death egg robot has 3 phases are great Sonic forces is a great game. Worst sonic game in history of all sonic games. The character customization idea wasn’t bad it was good it’s just how it was executed was poorly. More so how the game plays doesn’t play tribute to the good old sonic adventure or sonic heroes style. I’m tired of seeing that green target thing on my screen for sonic to hit something.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be honest, this game isn't bad. It's just very disappointing. In the months leading up to the release of this game, I was very excited. New villain, shadow and chaos were making a return and we could make our own avatar. unfortunately, when it released, In was very disappointed. First of all, you do not get to fight Shadow or Chaos. Chaos was only put into the game so that classic sonic could make a heroic return and save Tails. Infinite was a really cool villain, and he had a really good theme song, but he really could have been written better. He didn't create the sense of fear he was supposed to. Some of the boss fights are good and some of them are bad. The other Sonic characters just feel lifeless in this game as well. And Tails, Tails just lets Sonic get the crap beaten out of him by Eggmans minions in the second cutscene of the game. What happened to Tails?!! What did they do to the great hero from the adventure games?
The levels in this game are very short, and end before they really get good, though there are a few good ones. The longest levels are classic Sonic's and his are the worst and he doesn't get that much screen time. While modern sonic and the avatar control and play fine, classic Sonic's physics in this game are awful, which doesn't make sense as they perfected it in generations. The wisps made a return, but they were either useless or they broke the game. The levels have so much automation that they practically play themselves and in modern Sonic's levels, when it wasn't automated, all you needed to do was press the boost button to plough through everything, jump and homing attack occasionally, and get to the goal with absolutely no skill needed whatsoever. So basically, this was the first "boost to win" Sonic game. "Boost to win" was how the boost games were described, and lied about by haters until Sega made it a reality with Forces. The levels were also just too easy.
The story of this game is okay, but underwhelming. The idea of Dr Eggman finally fulfilling his dream and taking over the world is great, but they just didn't write it properly. Moreover, Sonic should have stayed "dead" for more than 30 seconds. The plot is that Sonic has been locked and tortured up in the death egg for six months, but then, just before the decent boss fight with Zavoc (the Death Queen), he's literally let go... just like that. To add insult to injury, Sonic doesn't look like he's been harmed at all. He doesn't show a single sign of being tortured and he seems happy as can be. And literally about 40 seconds after sonic "dies", We are told he is still alive. like, that's just stupid and very bad writing.
The areas in this game, I will say, are ascetically pleasing apart from chemical plant , Space Port. At this point though, I am so sick of seeing Greenhill and chemical plant though (and so many sonic fans are) and Sega really need to stop making sonic team bring it back all the time.
The level design is good sometimes and pretty bland at others. It's way too linier. And don't even get me started on how easy it is to get an S rank in this game. What happened to actual challenging level design? I know it's a kids game, but kids aren't stupid and they are fast learners, so it's not an excuse that this game is ridiculously easy.
Also, you no longer have lives, so dying has no effect on the player and is just a small annoyance. It means that we just don't even care about dying, because we will never get a game over.
I can understand why Sonic team went safe on forces after the abysmal failure of Sonic boom, but they still could have made this game more. Very disappointing game, but not awful. It can be fun for a casual, non-effort play. Unfortunately, It's not an absolute banger like Sonic Unleashed or generations. At least the majority of the soundtrack is good. I mean, The light of hope (the ending theme) is so heart warming, I love it. And Infinite's theme is a chef's kiss. Fist bump is alright, though it sounds like Douglas Rob was trying and failing to reach high notes. The Shadow also dlc is pretty good, however, it's only 3 levels long. This game was not the return to form and the return to Good sonic games like colours, generations and unleashed, that we were promised. 5.5/10. 55%

Very plain and boring. Its not an awful game, but theres nothing special about it, there's a lot of missed potential.

Or the avatar stages, the avatar creator is a very cool idea, and theres a lot of customization, but the stages themselves are

Or the avatar stages, the avatar creator is a very cool idea, and theres a lot of customization, but the stages themselves are basically just tweaked modern sonic stages, they dont take advantage of the wispons.
The controls are also very weird. When modern sonic goes in 2D for example, its almost like theres a limit to his speed, and he can only go as fast as modern with the boost. Hes also very slippery.
Classic sonic is even worse. He feels very heavy, and his jump is too short.

The level design isnt awful, but its very boring. Just straight lines with no branching paths.

Overall the game isnt bad, its just very mediocre. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone.

Sonic Forces Is a boring game that while not unreedemable It Is still In my opinion one of Sonics Worst outings. 1st with the positive. The graphics and character animations are pretty good. The graphics and character animations are pretty good. The music Is pretty good. Some levels like Egg Gate and The Custom Hero Capital City are quite good along with the tag team levels. Voice acting Is quite good and messing around In the Custom hero Customisation Is fun. With that out of the way let's go Into why I don't like this game. The story and dialouge Is complete dumpster fire with a lot of miss potiental especially with the new villian Infinite who Is given such a pathetic back story In a pretty useless Dlc pack. There's so much stupid moments from claiming Sonic Is tortured for months but when you see him he Is completly fine. Classic Sonic being there all cause of marketing since 2011s Sonic Generations was a hit. Many things In the story just happen off screen and are only explained during text on a black screen. Finally Tails Is so stupid In this game. The moment where they say "He's gone insane" when he clearly Isin't and then got scared by Chaos 0 made me want to throw my controller at my screen. Infinite Is a weak villian which sucks since the marketing and his design made him look so cool but In the game he Is just so terrible. His motivation for being a villian was because Shadow called Him childish names. I am not jokeing It Is as sad as It sounds. Enough about the dreadful story let's talk about the gameplay. Theres 3 type of gameplay styles. 1st Mordern Sonic. What The Hell did they do to him? When he runs It's so off because unlike previous games like Colours Unleashed and Generations he doesen't slowly bulid up to the full speed but Instead after 2 seconds of moving he will blast off. This feels so unatural and especially doesen't help where your In a game with boringly designed levels. 2nd Custom Hero. Probably the best of the 3 but still not great. The wispon weapons are a cool Idea and sometimes can be fun in the levels but sadly ruined by again levels that are super boring. Could of been a great Idea If the levels were fun. And finally Classic Sonic. NOPE. That's all I need to say. Also his level music Is trash. That green hill level makes my ears bleed with that music. As I mentioned previous there are positives with this game but overall Sonic Forces was a complete disapointment from jank controls to a terrible story with boring levels and tons of miss potiential. I ocasionally go back to speed run the ocasional Mordern Sonic level but thats It. Do not recommend. 4/10 Expand

This game is a bag of missed potential. The new villain is lame, the boost formula is watered down, the avatar is modern Sonic without the boost and with a gun, and classic sonic is just there with physics worse than the classics (including mania) and even generations. The story is bad and the music is sometimes good and sometimes painfully mediocre (Example: Green Hill Classic). Overall,This game is a bag of missed potential. Overall, this game could've been great, but the uninspired level design, terrible story and characters, underwhelming gameplay styles, and underwhelming villain has made this game down to be one of the worst mainline sonic games.

Sonic Forces is the most mediocre, half-hearted game I've ever played, and I find this incredibly disappointing considering I was actually really excited for this game! I was initially rather ambivalent to the announcement of Sonic Mania and more excited for the announcement of this game, since I grew up with games like Sonic Colors and Sonic Unleashed instead of the Classic games. ButSonic Forces is the most mediocre, half-hearted game I've ever played, and I find this incredibly disappointing considering I was actually really excited for this game! I was initially rather ambivalent to the announcement of Sonic Mania and more excited for the announcement of this game, since I grew up with games like Sonic Colors and Sonic Unleashed instead of the Classic games. But after playing through Forces, it hit me just how average the game was, and I never once went back to it after my first playthrough almost 5 years ago.

The game's story and setup is actually something I envisioned as a cool idea for a Sonic game when I was younger: Dr. Eggman finally accomplishing his worldwide takeover and Sonic being placed in a much more difficult position to try and stop him. I was stoked to actually see that as a story for an upcoming game, but it unfortunately doesn't amount to much. The main villain, Infinite, is totally uninteresting, characters are brought back seemingly at random with no coherency, and everything is taken care of in a rather anticlimactic fashion by the end. The story didn't leave much of an impression on me, nor did any other part of the game. The avatar creation aspect is certainly a neat idea, but it doesn't save the levels from being completely and utterly boring, which is my main problem with this game. For as glad as I was to see the boost formula back for Modern Sonic, the stages feel like they're on autopilot for the whole game, with no branching paths to explore and hardly any enemies to give the stages a degree of challenge. The stages with Classic Sonic and the avatar aren't anything to write home about either; Classic Sonic's controls are awfully clunky and can make some stages frustrating to get through, and the avatar levels try to stand out with the inclusion of wisps, but they're very situational and some of them aren't very useful at all. The stages all blend into each other despite a variety of aesthetics, and the game is over after only 4 hours because of how fast you can breeze through everything. Not even the game's soundtrack left an impression on me, which is another aspect of the game I find disappointing because Fist Bump, Infinite's theme and Aqua Road's music were all released before the game came out and I thought those 3 tracks were all great! But the rest of the soundtrack didn't stick with me at all, and that isn't a good thing to hear about a Sonic soundtrack.

For how critical I've been of this game, I certainly can't bring myself to hate it, because it isn't an objectively bad game. It's perfectly functional and playable, but considering how excited I was at this game's announcement and how Sonic Team seemed to finally be getting something right about their franchise again, this is probably the most disappointed I've ever been in a video game. It makes me doubt whether or not Sonic will ever have a majorly successful game again, especially since the fans seem to know how to make a good Sonic game better than Sonic Team themselves. All I can hope is that Sonic Team can get their priorities straight, or this may be the best we can expect from future entries. You're better off just playing Sonic Generations, or even Sonic Suggests.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly don't get why people hate this game. I love Sonic Forces and it's one of my favorite games I've ever played. This game planted many fun memories of playing it into my brain. Green Hill Zone is also done right. It has that nostalgic feel to it but with a twist. Even the boss fight reimagines the original. Sure, I agree that it does suck that you have to download Super Sonic, but that never really bothered me as the core game is just a treat to play. The OC character creation is fun and unique and it ties into the story amazingly. About that, I love the story, too. Never did I think I'd see the day where Sonic is defeated. I love the cast of incredibly lovable characters as well. They even brought over characters from Knuckles' Chaotix! All in all, this game is amazing and I daresay it's better than Mania, if not in line with it. My only complaints are minor nitpicks. It does get a tad bit boring when playing it in long sittings and you have to download Super Sonic. I love this game and wholeheartedly recommend it. I don't get why people hate this game so much and I'm hoping to change it. Expand

It was a Sonic game. I don’t have many words here, it’s a Sonic experience for Switch & PS4. I commemorate the attempt at a darker story (it was much darker than Lost World) but it didn’t really deliver. The level design can be pretty good as well. I don’t have many words for this game, it’s just okay.

He is just a by-product of Sonic Team's desperate attempts to regain the 2000s Sonic fans and the complete failure of the 2010s staff to write a character in the vain of the older ones. The vain, by the way, is being a good character, which Infinite is most certainly not.

All of the villains are underutilised, only placed in trailers as promotional material. And, that is all I get from the game. It is a failed attempt at being anything other than mediocre.

If they were attempting to make the most boring, vapid, underwhelming experience possible, they couldn't even do that, since the music is actually quite good. But the music is the only thing keeping this game from a 3/10. So, a 4/10 it will get.

Sonic Forces is bad. I'm not going to sugarcoat it. It's not bad in some "I can enjoy it" type of way like Sonic 06, it's bad in the "this is a snoozefest" type of way. The controls are clunky and restrictive, the physics are bad at best, and even the soundtrack, something the Sonic franchise hardly gets wrong, is annoying to listen to.

What really boggles my mind with this game is how they made three other games using the boost oriented gameplay, and managed to screw this one up so bad. The level design is very linear, and the alternate paths you can take are usually clearly shoehorned. The custom character gimmick is awful and I doubt even a 12 year old would enjoy it once they got their hands on it. Classic sonic also doesn't play anywhere near how he would in classic games and is worse than even Sonic 4's gameplay imo.

The few positives I can say about the game is that it can play itself if you're looking for a game that looks cool but in actuality you're hardly doing anything, it still has red rings which can be a bit of a challenge for the player to collect (not recommended), and the boss fights are decent.

I wouldn't even call Sonic Forces an unfinished game, it's just a blatantly awful one made in poor taste.

Expand

Sonic 3D controls are correct but incomplete, lacking Drift and Air Dash. Sonic 2D controls are decent. Avatar's controls are a mess, the character goes from walking to dashing in a second, even if you slightly press the stick and this results in cheap deaths because of the levels that don't fit in this control scheme because you have to walk longer than a second before jumping and just before jumping you accidentally dash and fall off.

The first levels of Sonic Forces are disappointing and the last levels are infuriating. Two boss battles are fine and creative (Zavok and Mystic Jungle Infinite), two of the three battles against Infinite are confusing and the final battle is challenging in the wrong way. The music and presentation is the best that the game has to offer, since the story relies too heavily on negative feelings and death in a serious way instead of cartoony and comical like before. The first time you play the game you'll get tons of notices with useless cosmetics for your avatar. This is not the worst Sonic game ever but it's certainly the most disappointing. If Sonic Generations is 10/10, this is 1/10.

First off, the positives. The game graphically looks great, and the dialogue isn't as bad as you'd think. However for me, that's where the positives ends.

Now, let's get into the thick of it. Yes, the levels are ridiculously short as you may of heard, but The clones are basically filler and really don't exist. The same could be applied to Classic Sonic.

Now. The Avatar. A good idea in concept, but ended up being completely **** in every way. This breaks canon in every way possible. A character that has the stereotypical "Suddenly Appearing Protagonist." Brilliant.

The story tries to go for a dark tone, but fails. We expected Sonic and friends desperate, we got none of it.

For the gameplay itself, It feels to easy, even on hard. The characters controls are wonky, especially Classic Sonic. The bosses are lackluster and some are even reused.

Now, this all would have been forgivable in my eyes if the game hadn't been in development in 4 years. 4. **** YEARS. They built an engine instead of the damn game for 3 years, so that left only one year to develop it. Shame.

Overall, the game sucks, and is the 4th worst Sonic game in the entire series. The next game will decide the fate of Sonic for sure, and I'm not talking about Sonic Colors: Ultimate, that released already and I'm already casting doubt into it. If the new game goes well, we'll celebrate. If not, the entire world has prepared a coffin for Sonic.

The story mode is not the greatest either as Infinite at the end with no explanation and in one part of it classic Sonic came out of a random portal (I am guessing that the portal was the bad ending from Sonic mania when he got sucked thought a portal but if it isn't it is a bit random). 1. Story: The story is not THAT different. Like honestly SEGA this is not Unleashed oh god. so the story is meant to take a darker tone and also chaos is in the cutscenes but we can't fight him in the game.

    2. Gameplay: It is much closer to how it worked in Generations with no trick system. So, there are 3 modes, Classic, Modern, and Avatar. Classic is 2D gameplay, Modern is high speed gameplay in 3D and the Avatar is basically Modern with less speed cuz no boost.

    3. Music: SEGA this is just a game. Like this music should play in my funeral cuz its sooooo headbopping.

So overall Sonic Forces is a really good idea for a game but it gets boring and the stages feel like the fastest thing period. But this game is great at the same time. Thanks

I would say, the game's not that bad. The only thing I can complain about is that the levels are too short and there are too many green hills in this game. Sega what I think you should have done was to combine some of the levels together making them a whole big level instead of making a 30-second level. Yeah, there would be fewer levels, but the bigger levels make it up.

I had hopes for this game at first, but when I look back at it, it's just depressing.

Infinite sounded like a cool villain, but he turned out to be pretty generic. He's just a guy who felt like causing chaos for the hell of it. And then there's the Jackal Squad who wasn't even talked about at all beyond being shown in a few panels in the prequel comic and getting "destroyed" by Shadow.

And then there's the Jackal Squad who wasn't even talked about at all beyond being shown in a few panels in the prequel comic and getting "destroyed" by Shadow. Oh, and when they were beaten, he tries to avenge them, but gets put on his ass by Shadow's sudden teleporting without a Chaos Emerald. Shadow **** talks him before leaving, setting Infinite over the edge. Liam O' Brian voices him perfectly, but there's only so much a voice can do for bad writing. People are understandably confused about his ability since it's described inconsistently. Tails explained it pretty well with it essentially affecting the brain to cause all kinds of effects as if you were in a dream that can affect your real self. Still a li'l confused? Think of the power of suggestion--better yet, for you Jojo fans out there, think of Whitesnake's disks which can also give commands, including extreme ones like EXPLODING, to those they're inserted into. Now, this would be fine if it weren't for the fact that the Ruby's power was already established as reality warping which is ALSO shown when monster versions of Infinite are materialized in Metropolis. Then again, reality warping is pretty related to illusions, so I'll leave it at that.

First of all, stop with the Classic Sonic! He has absolutely no reason to exist in this game (or any game that isn't Sonic Generations). He has the fewest stages of the three characters and to add insult to injury, he's now from another dimension instead of being younger Sonic. And at the end where Sonic says he'll be back is just the calm before the storm... along with Green Hill. Quick summarization of the gameplay: Sonic and the avatar are stiff, shallow, and automated while young Sonic is stiff and sloppy, not even able to go up an incline after runnin' down a massive downward slope.

Anyway, the story ties into Sonic Mania. Young Sonic exists for no reason and the Phantom Ruby is a random plot device that conveniently lands on Egghead's front doorstep... again. Sonic confronts the man of eggs who has another plot of the day in the form of Infinite, a jackal (who I thought was a bat at first glance) with illusion powers via the Phantom Ruby. He shows up with Eggman to kick Sonic's ass with obvious clones of past villains while Tails watches. Months later, Sonic is presumed dead only to be confirmed alive seconds later and here's where your avatar comes in.

The avatar is a Sonic FanFiction writer's dream come true. You can customize their look from somewhat of a variety of options. I've seen character customization done better in other games. Here, you have a few species to choose from, very few base species design options, and three color variants of most pieces of clothing. Then there's a Sanic ****post shirt as DLC. After you customize your look, you're off. Unlike Sonic, Burton (which is what I referred to my avatar as) uses a Wispon which is as busted as Sonic's boosting though some take a bit more effort to use.

Back to the story. Burton saves Sonic who already kinda saved himself by beating the Zavok clone and they both go back to HQ... Young Sonic and Shadow one-shot two of the four clones... Sonic and Burton beat the last clone who was already a fake of something that wasn't real... Sonic fights Infinite and loses, but is left alive again for the hell of it... Burton fights Infinite and gets his ass kicked, but is saved by a Phantom Ruby prototype that Infinite should've clearly seen and later gets sent to Null Space with Sonic for ~20 seconds before they "gotta go fast" outta there somehow... The final battle begins and Infinite tries to drop a sun on The Resistance AND Eggman, but the prototype saves the day... Sonic and Burton fight Infinite one last time before he unwillingly disappears into the reactor due to the man egg's intervention and an underwhelming boss fight happens and boom, suddenly a "Let's change the world together!" speech for no reason.

I didn't mention some stuff since it wasn't worth bringin' up. Notice the Chaos Emeralds are never mentioned beyond some bull**** $3.00 DLC that doesn't make the game any better. Super Sonic ain't worth it; you can already boost through everything as it is and there's no reason to play young Sonic like this since he still controls like ass. I don't know how they forgot the Chaos Emeralds. Maybe they saw that Mania already used 'em and thought the power of friendship can be a replacement for 'em in this game. One thing I could give praise for is the music (except young Sonic's stage music). My only problem is they use too much synth. I'd love to hear 'em without it.

Overall, this is some ****ty FanFiction and my hopes aren't all that high for what's next.

However, the positives? I feel like the 2D platforming is incredibly fun. Sure, its no Sonic Mania or any of the classics, but it brings a fresh, fun take on it, building upon some of the 2D platforming from Generations. The 3D platforming was a lot of fun, too. Some spots here and there may have been tedious, but overall, it provided for great gameplay. And while I didn't fully invest into customizing every aspect and unlockable for my character, toying around with the options was still great fun. Die Classic Sonic Level mag ich auch aber weniger als die anderen. Sonst ist die Story leider zu kurz geraten. Man hätt da noch viel mehr draus machen können. Aber dennoch find ich das Spiel nice!!

This game is dissapointing on so many levels. Sonic unleashed and sonic generations demonstrated how good and fast you can control sonic with amazing Level Designs. In sonic forces, you mostly only need tu push the analog stick forward and the story is a mess. No sonic game has a deep story, but at least they were fun, simple, engaging and gave a good excuse to do what you needed to do.This game is dissapointing on so many levels. The gameplay is something imprecise but it is fun. Graphically it's better than previous deliveries. Also the soundtrack is good (although some tracks are not to my taste).

After playing Sonic Mania I was really excited for this game... and it was very disappointing.
The story is beyond bad, the gameplay is very uncomfortable, the graphics are ok but nothing amazing, the soundtrack is good sometimes. Well it was a very disappointing game, but is fun soemtimes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Forces is a failure for Nintendo switch. I got this game thought it was going to be fun as seen in the E3 trailers but no. Broken mechanics, You can speed of the map, 2D Levels are slow, Mediocre story, ETC. I refunded this game to game stop already. What a waste of 60 bucks. SEGA really failed at making their mascot a good icon yet again with Broken 3D Games. Expand

An extraordinarily disappointing game that has brought Sonic as a series to a complete stop. While some may claim it's failings are due to the boost formula, the truth is much different. While some may claim it's failings are due to the boost formula, the truth is much different. Sonic Forces is the answer to the backwards question; What if we spent more time building an engine rather than the game? What we get is an incredibly lazy and blatant cash grab. Sega seemingly never will learn there lesson long enough. The need to give developers time to create a great game is of key importance yet Sega continuously forgets this. Sonic Unleashed and Generations are what happens when Sega does give their developers full reign on a project.

The music in Forces is insanely mediocre. In a failed attempt to capture the magic of Crush40. Force's music is a pale imitation and the main theme Fist Bump wasn't even constructed with any lyrics in mind.

Most importantly the level design is the most simplistic and automated in any Sonic game. The level designers hired to make the levels in the game had only ever worked on Sonic Lost World and have no experience working on this game-play style, which is very apparent. All the worth while Sonic Team employees have jumped ship to Nintendo where their talents can be appreciated by a competent Developer. Sonic Forces is an utter failure in every sense of the word.

Sonic Forces has multiple problems- the game is too short, the story is convoluted and rushed, and the animation is choppy- but the gameplay still feels great. There's sparks of brilliance in this game, but it's never fully realized. It seems more like a proof of concept than an actual, full-fat game, but the idea itself is intriguing enough to make me want to see more. What Sonic Team needs to do is rebuild this game from the ground up, which would make it a Switch essential. Sonic Forces would greatly benefit from a story that takes more than 2 hours to complete in full, maybe up to ten, with a complete removal of Classic Sonic. A Shadow the Hedgehog-esque branching story would make it even more replayable. Multiplayer options, such as taking your custom character into raid-style battles on Eggman's massive Badniks with other players would increase the incentive to keep playing even more. Overall, Sonic Forces is a game full of unrecognized potential, and doesn't stay as long as it should, but is still fun and replayable to an extent. Expand

Forces also heavily improves on Colors in dialogue and original concepts. While the writing itself is questionable, Forces manages to improve drastically over Colors in most dialogue, and the base concept of the game being a grand-scale, hopeless planetary war make it MUCH more interesting than the play-it-safe, uninspired story of Colors.

Overall, Forces is what fans of the older, more serious games have wanted for years, and while the execution isn't perfect, the game manages to one-up the game that messed up the franchise's story-telling capabilities a decade ago.

The game doesn't do enough to be truly great. It's not a bad game, but it's too safe. The Classic Sonic gameplay was unnecessary, while the rest of the gameplay is passable at best.

It only gets a 6because it controls well and is fun but way to short and classic sonic and the phantom ruby being shoehorned in. It was just to make money and not a good game. I don't like it. Sonic forces had potential for a redirection for the series after sonic mania, but sadly that isn’t the case. The story feels like a mediocre fan fiction coming to life, The levels are broken sometimes, and the game feels very slow compared to generations and colors. Honestly if you want a sonic game to play on the switch, then pick up Sonic mania. You will have way more fun with that!

This title despite having better graphics, the gameplay worsened in a brutal way, being more boring and disappointing, although I did not agree before when they said that: "Sonic games are passed alone" But with Forces now, if that's the case, the wisps fill the boost bar completely and it becomes automatic while you play, i don't nave fun as before, The same happens with the avatar, Even if it's fun to create your own character, it's useless if the gameplay is as boring as sonic, it does not offer anything better and when the wispon sucks a wisp it works infinitely, and it makes the experience ruin, the classic sonic in addition to be fan service and does not have anything to do with the plot is filled and the worst is that its gameplay is worse than in generations. Although the story is not very well made and the music is really good, in my point of view the most important thing is the gameplay and if this does not work the rest does not work, this is what makes a game good, and sonic Forces is far from being up to his previous games. Sonic Forces may have created some hype but unfortunately, it mostly falls flat on its face as it quickly becomes obvious that this game is an exercise in disappointment. While the action runs smoothly whether on a television screen or on handheld mode, the game's short and unimaginative levels, the absence of gameplay mechanics that had become a staple of 3D Sonic games, the unreliable controls and the mediocre soundtrack all add up to a very flawed game from which a lot more was expected.
