Its a sad time to be a Sonic Fan. At least we got Sonic Mania this year. Sonic Forces is average at best. Miles worse than Colors and Generations. I wish they would go in the Sonic Adventure direction again to be honest.

First, can I just say the soundtrack is amazing? I'll get that out of the way right now. Much like Super Mario Odyssey's trademark song, I'm going to have some of Sonic Force's tracks stuck in my head for quite some time.

The story was pretty freakin' good. Cliche "Power of friendship" aside, it was at least deeper then I was expecting, and more importantly, it's got YOU in it. I wouldn't consider myself as a part of the Sonic fanbase, but I had a blast, making my bird-man look as awesome as possible and watching everything play out. If THAT is one of your biggest desires from this game, you will enjoy it, I promise, no matter what the negatives I'll bring up are.

Let's talk about that Avatar customization. You got 7 species of anthropomorphic awesomeness to choose from, and feel free to make it look as edgy or hilarious as you want. Regrettably, you're going to start in the nude, but you will VERY quickly start unlocking a huge variety of options by completing missions, and it never stops being satisfying. Aside from sweet, sweet cosmetics, you have a fair variety of weapons to choose from. These weapons not only work differently in combat, but have a special movement option that can get you places nothing else would. It add's a decent amount of re-playability to the stages, as some Coins or shortcuts can only be reached with a specific weapon. Also, you can unlock several of one kind of weapon, each with different passive effects, such as quicker recovery time, or moving faster when collecting rings. The customization may keep you playing for quite some time.

    Now, for those dreaded negatives

First and foremost, I absolutely hate how the controls feel, no matter what type of stage it is. Perhaps it's how all the games have felt lately and I'm just not accustomed to it, but I've played through the entire story now, and I can't help but blame my wonky movement for all of my deaths. 2D platforming felt much more difficult then it should have been, considering the overall simplicity of the levels. Whether I was playing as OG Sonic, Modern Sonic, or my own Avatar, it just felt BAD. Jumping, acceleration, spin attacking, ALL OF IT!

It was seriously hampering my experience, which is a shame because the game itself is quite pleasant to run through when nothing's frustrating me. Nice environments, and while the levels seemed easy, I had my fun trying to find alternate routes, or otherwise, well, going fast. For some reason, just going fast down a straight line is still fun.

Finally, don't know if it was just me, but I felt like the framerate wasn't even at 30. Or maybe it was 30 and I've just gotten too used playing on my PC. At any rate, it wasn't a smooth 60 FPS experience, and while I think the the game looks great visually, I also don't think it should have been terribly taxing on the Switch, and I'm not sure why the FPS seemed so low.

I want to be very clear, I've ENJOYED Sonic Forces. The game dared to tease me with a "True Ending" like in Sonic Mania, and I'm absolutely going to try and reach that point. But it has a lot of flaws that I feel everyone should be aware of before buying it, especially if you don't have much experience with the "Modern Sonic formula", as it seems to be called. But if you're well aware of what you're getting into, or don't care and just want to see your character kick some butt with Sonic, you'll have a great time.

I really wanted to like this game. As a fan of all the old 3D Dreamcast and Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 Sonic games, I was actually looking forward to this. After the disaster that was Sonic Boom, I thought Sonic Team would turn it around and cater to the fans once again. Sonic Mania was, of course great, but given the bright spots in the previous 3 "next gen" Sonic gamesI really wanted to like this game. As a fan of all the old 3D Dreamcast and Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 Sonic games, I was actually looking forward to this. After the disaster that was Sonic Boom, I thought Sonic Team would turn it around and cater to the fans once again. Sonic Mania was, of course great, but given the bright spots in the previous 3 "next gen" Sonic games (Unleashed/Colors/Generations), I thought this time they'd perfect the formula. All in all, it isn't a bad game, and was pretty fun to play, but is nevertheless a disappointment in terms of what it's doing for the Sonic series (although I did have high expectations). The story is fine (although I would've really appreciated any presence of Chaos Emeralds at all, which for me completes a true Sonic game), music is excellent as always, and even the script was a pleasant surprise (save for the classic corny speeches), but it all boils down to gameplay. Starting with Modern Sonic, he probably has the most fun levels IMO, where players will find similarities to the other next gen Sonic games. However, there are a few of examples of straight terrible level design. Most of these examples are oversights, like a bridge where dashing is encouraged, yet if you try, falling off immediately is unavoidable. Additionally, a few levels are also ridiculously short, under a minute and a half, which can really only be explained by laziness or mismanagement of priorities at Sonic Team (as there are plenty of "challenge levels" to go around). Classic Sonic comes second in level consistency. He has a few of the best levels in the game, but again, some are just poorly designed. Mostly though, I had no idea why they even included him in this game. It just felt unnecessary, and he didn't really contribute to the main plot (some excuse about a dimensional disturbance was the reason for his presence). He didn't detract from the game, but it feels like a lot of the effort spent putting him in could've been used better elsewhere (like extending the relatively short levels and campaign). Maybe (hopefully) they could've just saved him for Sonic Generations 2, but he really didn't have a place in what could've been a self-contained good old fashioned Sonic story. Lastly, the avatar stages. Overall they were trying to combine the high speed and homing attacks of Sonic and a smash em up platforming style of gameplay. Sometimes it worked well (especially in the Sonic + Avatar stages), sometimes it didn't. When it didn't, it was because there were too many oversights, unnecessary obstacles or puzzles, and random gameplay elements that stop us from going fast, even in Modern Sonic stages. I actually thought Unleashed did this the best in their Day stages, with gorgeous levels and smart design, that, even in the 2D sections, never felt like it slowed the player down. That'd be my key complaint about the design: at its worst, it forcibly slows you down.

Now for what they do right. Like I said, music is amazing. The plot does its job (I actually really liked the plotline of the first 6 or so levels). Sometimes it gets lost between upbeat and dark, but the war-esque tone is a good fit. The script was actually really good. There were the occasional corny puns and cringy speeches about friendship and whatnot, but I thought that the writing for characters like Eggman and Sonic was much improved, and Infinite makes for a very good antagonist. Like I said before, the level design isn't always all the way there, but when it goes right, it feels like the best levels in Colors, Unleashed and Generations do, some of the most entertaining video game platforming levels out there. The issue is consistency. Customizing the avatar was surprisingly fun, and is very in depth, with a ton of unlockable outfits and accessories. When I wasn't forced into a smash-em-up with awkward weapons, I thought the high speed, more Sonic-esque portions of the avatar levels were pretty fun. The final few levels were kind of a jumble, with a kind of run-on story, but they were actually relatively challenging, which was welcome after a few levels that felt like walkthroughs.

A common reaction to this game that I've seen is "fans of the series will enjoy it", and I think that's pretty accurate. If you think you will, I recommend buying it, it's only $40, which is $20 cheaper than most console or PC releases. It has 30 levels in the campaign, plus a few more challenge levels, PLUS a free DLC called "Episode Shadow", with some fun levels, so there's plenty to keep busy, even though a bunch of levels are too short. I don't regret buying it, but I just wish that they learned from their mistakes in designing this game. It doesn't feel improved from the errors of past Modern Sonic games at all. I hope Sonic Team can reinvent themselves more for Sonic's next title, as I think the Unleashed/Colors/Generations/Forces formula is getting worn out. All in all though, I had fun.

A weird and occasionally unfitting soundtrack, exceptionally linear and un-challenging gameplay, and the build up to fights with Chaos and Shadow that are done away in cutscenes. Sonic Forces does deliver on what it advertised, and if it seemed to advertise more, you should remember that that this is a 3D sonic game made by the team that put out Lost World. The choices for making your own character are also off-putting, and the clothing options are exceptionally gaudy - see the "gamer" snapback. Classic Sonic handles so slowly as well; he's stiff to control and shows that the team learned nothing from what was implemented in Mania, which fantastically did classic's momentum and control.
Sonic Forces is, truly, dangling plastic keys in front of kids and fanboys alike, and despite their admittedly hilarious PR team, Sonic Team has left you with a boring experience. If you have the opportunity, opt for Mania instead - its team is much more passionate and wise with how sonic should play.

I went into Sonic Forces looking for it to expand upon or at least be better than the already amazing Sonic Colors and Generations before it, finding only disappointment. The game lacks anything to really say it is better or worse than the two, it really is just the same, just that it makes you feel epic or that you have accomplished something.

The game lacks anything to really say it is better or worse than the two, it really is just the same, just that it makes you feel epic or that you have accomplished something.

Okay, first of all, the gameplay. The gameplay is just like Gen/Colors except the Modern's playstyle is fun and not so linear, while the Avatar stages feel forced and try to hide the fact that they are linear through "multiple paths" and quicktime events. The only fun I really had with the Avatar was pulling of chains with the wispons to take different paths to completing a level and the customization of the character itself. Classic Sonic is just like how he was in Generations, he's fine to play as and offers many paths to follow through on the stage, being very fun to play throughout the progression of the game.

Next, the story. The plot of Sonic Forces itself has to be its strongest component since it does an excellent job in developing characters, their goals, and setting a very dark and gritty tone that you feel sucked into at times. Personally, I found the story to be amazing really well written at times, even though there are some cheesy puns and some very clever ones scattered throughout. Overall I just found the story to be very fun to experience and to watch how it unfolded.

Now, the graphics. I myself do not go into video games for their graphics, but mainly their framerate. I played this game on the Nintendo Switch and have seen some footage from the PS4, playing/watching both until completion. The Nintendo Switch definitely is not the best way to go if you are looking for that crisp 60 fps with beautiful shading and textures throughout. It could only run at 30 fps a with little dips up and down. On the other hand, the PS4 offers everything your eyes are looking for and is truly a great visual experience with a nice framerate. If you prefer the on the go experience like I do though, you would want to go with the Switch port of this game.

Finally, we come to all the negatives I have about this game. The game's animations can feel very stiff and poorly executed with some looking like wood when watching movement in cutscenes. Some of the level design can also come to very linear and fall into a lot of 2D platforming. A LOT of 2D platforming. The boss fights were also very easy to defeat with some being beatable within 20 seconds of the boss even starting, plenty of them feeling like they recycle too much from the previous bosses or that they are just boring to go through in general. The controls for the Avatar are also very complicated and not very fun to really even use, most combat sections feeling like they are only there to consume your level time and artificially extend the gameplay.

In conclusion, Sonic Forces is an okay, but not great video game with fun gameplay that had a very detailed and well-written plot with plenty of dark overtones and EdGe. If you are looking for a Sonic game that tells a great story, has good gameplay, and has an overall good visual style (depending on your console of choice) then this in the Sonic game for you. There is plenty I still did not cover in this review, but I feel it is worthy of improvement, feeling rushed for the release date (again) and in total just being just kind of disappointing.

While I do wish this game was better than I expected, the game itself wasn't that bad of an experience compared to what most people are making it out to be.

When it comes down to it, Forces's absolute undeniable strong point is the plot. Rather than following something cliche of the normal Modern Sonic game line ups where it is an attempt to stop Eggman from conquering the world, the fact that Forces turns that upside down with just the exposition is quite satisfying. Seeing how we finally get Eggman conquering the world in the beginning, it just completely does a topsy-turvy on that trope with this scenario. With how Sonic is presumed dead (in all actuality he isn't), the impact, point, and tone are all established firmly which keeps this consistent dark tone throughout the game. Honestly, the narrative is a great selling point with how really dark it is, yet the game does a good job on delivering really what it should be like if our mad scientist friend finally conquered the world.

When it comes to gameplay and stages, I'm going to have to say that is was just decent from my experience with the game. The three main play styles as you all know are the Avatar's, Classic Sonic's, and Modern Sonic's. When it comes down to it, the stages themselves do suit the environment and tone the game depicts with them having a gloomy atmosphere and dark undertone to them. Honestly, the game wasn't truly immersive with the stages as it just felt more like a task that I was forced to do rather than me getting enjoyment from doing it. Sometimes you have some rather good stages, but those are heavily overshadowed with the others that are of inferior quality making them mediocre normally or bad at worst. While I'm not the hugest fan of the conflicting playing styles, Classic Sonic does play decently in a good homage to how he somewhat was in Sonic Generations. Modern Sonic does a somewhat good job with the boost formula though it has other problems that are somewhat underlying. The Avatar is somewhat similar in play style to Modern Sonic, but it branches off with more focus on using weapons for attacking and solving puzzles which in itself were decent as well.

When it comes to cinematic showings for cutscenes and other things of that nature, I will saw that the game does a somewhat good job at this. Sometimes the cutscenes can feel awkward with how the jump from a more darker and shadowy appearance is given which makes Forces seem rather fickle in this area. The cutscenes sometimes also make some characters just feel so poorly animated that is just honestly makes me question the budget that was put into this product.

When it comes to other aspects such as soundtrack, control, etc. are okay. An added problem I do have is that the characters do feel slow which rather makes this game feel somewhat uncomfortable when playing them at times. Forces isn't necessarily a "bad" game, but I think it definitely didn't live up to the hype every had for it. Most of the things in Forces are just mediocre or okay really with a few added good things here and there. I would give this a 7/10 for the fact that it doesn't deserve exactly a lower or a high score when compiling these criticisms.

When this game was first announced i was excited, the Avatar with the multiple weapons looked great. and you know what, those weapons were pretty great...and that was it. This game is a terrible flop, from not knowing what it wants its own tone to be, to writing that makes 80's Saturday morning cartoons look like genius works of art. The levels are pretty bland, the 3D sonic ones being the worst i've seen ever. The bosses are uninspired, with half of them being auto scrollers where you keep running till you hit the enemy. here is a direct summary of how i beat a boss, "run in circles to dodge and attack, one well timed jump to dodge attack, one jump to dodge a shockwave, then mash homing attack" repeat that 4-5 times and boom, that's a boss fight. Now, you may think "well, its a sonic game so its saving grace must be the music right"? well i wish that were the case. The music is a mixture of overly high pitched auto tune sounding vocal tracks, and dubstep, the latter of which has a very short loop in most tracks. The only reason i won't put this game any lower than a 5 is simple, it CAN be enjoyed to some extent with how bad it gets, but thats minimal at best. Expand

Ill divide my review on various parts, to explain my opinion as pure as possible:

    STORY:

Its kinda good, not gonna lie. For the "GOOD" part, the idea of Eggman actually ruling the entire world for various months is pretty nice, and the fact he actually tortured Sonic for once its... pretty interesting i would say... also, including old and new bosses adds a nice touch (old, talking about Chaos and Metal Sonic, and new, talking about zavok).

for the "OK" part, the introduction of infinite is kinda weird, because you need to play Episode Shadow to understand how all begins, which is not a very nice decision from Sega, but i will let it pass...

And the implementation of the OC Avatar is very simple, just a survivor that wanted to join the resistance isnt very attractive.

for the "Not Good" part, Classic Sonic appeared just out of nowhere, not even sure how or why the idea of Classic Sonic appearing out of nowhere was a cool idea :(

also, in some of the trailers of the game, you see shadow as part of the bad guys, when in the game you cant even fight him (either Chaos) which is kinda disappointing, but oh well...

    PLAYABILITY/GAME ASPECTS:

Its ok... its not like they introduced something new to the playability (because we have the casual Modern Sonic running the same line all over again, Classic Sonic with the 2D enviroment), except the things that the OC Avatar can do, that can change depending of the animal you choose, which it add a bit more of replay value, but excluding that, its just like any other sonic game (this doesnt mean thats bad... just kinda repetitive)

About the game aspects, for the "GOOD" part, voice acting is good and the quality is nice in all versions of the game, pretty smooth and good looking.

in the "OK" part, the AI of the NPCs isnt as good as previous games, in the Modern Sonic stages they dont even try to hurt you, which is kinda understandable, since the main goal of those stages is just run in a straight line, but it makes it too easy IMO, they should at least try to hurt you, not just be there, wasting space. In the Classic Sonic stages, they look ok.

And in Modern Sonic stages, the checkpoints hitbox seems kinda weird, you can "kinda" go thru it, small detail, since again, the main goal is just run until you reach the end, but its hitbox should be complete.

The stages are fun and pretty colorful, packed with a bit of that nostalgia and feelings, depending of the situations

    DIFFICULTY:

its too easy, comparing it with other sonic games (not as easy as oddysey, but thats a different franchise), the NPCs dont really try to hurt you, they are pretty easy to avoid and destroy as well, most of the stages can be completed very quickly, and overall, you can complete the game in 2 hours, or even less, and im not talking about speedrunning the game... which IMO is not that good, but moving that to a side, some (not all) of the stages can take 2 or 3 tries to understand where you need to go and where you should fall.

    OVERALL:

its ok. As a Sonic fan myself, i think this game had too much hype (and i was hyped too), but im kinda dissapointed, since some things are not as the Trailers promised. But is not as bad some people told me it was going to be, either is as good some people told me too...

Its enjoyable at least, and it gives some fresh air with the OC thing (which im not a fan of, but apparently it was well received, so, i guess ill let that pass too) and i can say its better than Lost World and Boom.

Should you buy it? If you want, or if you are a big Sonic fan, but i wouldnt say this is a title you should really get...

When the ending credits start you don’t feel as satisfied as you would want to and it feels like Sonic Team overestimated the emotional strength of their story. One particular thing that stood out was the music: It’s slightly different from what we usually get in modern Sonic games, but it works really well. The game could have used more creative level design and a few tweaks to the controls (especially with classic Sonic), but that didn’t really stop me from smiling as I boosted through the solid soundtrack! I have a feeling too much time was spent designing the clothing for the Avatar that you get from completing missions rather than working on more levels on top of the core 30.

The game was clearly not rushed during production, but even if you take your time to explore, you will feel like you are rushing through. Despite this, the game controls perfectly and is great fun to play, and I would recommend it if you want a (relatively) cheap platformer on the Switch that is short but sweet.

Nice story for a Sonic game, but very disappointing entry in terms of level design and controls. Omg controls and physics in this game are awful. If those were better this game would be so much better. Maybe even good enough to stay near Colors. But they **** up so much, that the easiest platforming is so much pain.. Why.. But still this game can be fun.

    Version 1.01

I was nine years old, and already well loyal to Nintendo, when Sonic the Hedgehog burst onto the games scene in 1991 and forced me to join most of my mates in vassalship to SEGA. Britain had been in the first Major ministry for less than a year and the Soviet Union, then politically little more than inertia and wishful thinking, was a mere six months from delivering the death blow to a half-century long Cold War. Though I did not have the language or context to describe it at the time, I recall a attitude of youthful exuberance, playful irreverence and cautious optimism that a decidedly new day had dawned, and SEGA's new mascot felt utterly at home. I've been there with Sonic through most of the intervening decades: making the leap to CD, to the Dreamcast Adventures, even to the trying and inconsistent Modern days.

Twenty-six years removed from that first adventure, I, now a middle-aged and facing a world far more dystopian that the halcyon days of the nineties, decided to play and review the blue blur's newest adventure, and find that I much prefer the metaphysical horror of helplessness caused by real life to the metaphysical horror of uselessness found in Sonic Forces. It is, in the most concise and charitable phrasing I can muster, a testament to aspirations of mediocrity. Please note that I very specifically and intentionally write 'aspiration to' it, not the state itself, because I cannot reasonably even call the game mediocre. To my own mind, mediocrity would be stagnation, an inability to move beyond or improve upon whichever of the formulae, that have comprised the frantic experimentation of period inaugurated by the reboot of doom, is momentarily on display. This, alas, Sonic Team could not even muster. The level design, which to my opinion peaked in creativity with Colors and in consistency with Generations, has retreated in virtually every metric. Length, variety and dynamism are an unimagined dream in the doldrums of this disaster's roughly fifty stages. General control has managed to become even more wildly inconsistent, punctuating what is mostly sluggish and cumbersome translation of movement with the occasional burst of comical slipperiness, and the boost mechanic, having already overstayed its welcome on the whole, when coupled with the absurd brevity of the stages, is a recipe for game that appeals to speedrunners and few others. The art design is mostly clean though uninspired, but critically the technical presentation is notably poor on the Switch, and most other systems not natively outputting at 1080p, strongly suggesting that next to no optimisation was done despite it ostensibly being a mainline multi-platform release. By far the worst offender of this title, or the greatest victim depending on your degree of empathy, is Sonic's lore. Now having suffered three consecutive titles featuring time travel, cross-dimensionality or both, all pretence to a cohesive narrative has been obliterated. Worse still, the infantile writing of Ken Pontac and Warren Graff, already culpable for Sonic Lost World and all Sonic Boom games, delivers a story bereft of nuance or any emotion beyond shoneny angst, taking what ought to have been desperate and harrowing fight against tyrannical annihilation and giving it the emotional weight of schoolyard tussle over favourite Pokemon.

It's a strange thing to grow up with, and in some ways away from, a cherished part of childhood, and frequently it's only in later adulthood when we find the strength, or perhaps resignation, to be more cynical about our formative years and those things which hallmarked them. With Sonic Forces, I sincerely believe that the time has come for the games community to have a frank and honest communication about the place of Sonic and whether his relevance, at least in the 3D platforming space, has passed from the commercial to the historical. For more than a decade I, and many others in the fandom, have soothed the wound of SEGA's and Sonic Team's incompetence with the balm of 'the next game', but there is a limit to the latitude that can be given to a pastime that demands so much and consistently offers so little. In life, there is always that moment, as certainly harrowing as it often is bittersweet, where we confront that not only are our days truly numbered but that those behind us are, with a moral certainly, better than those before us. I cannot help but question whether that time has come for Big Blue.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is horrible, the LD is completely linear, the enemies lack artificial intelligence, classic Sonic songs resemble the infamous Sonic 4, the phases are very repetitive and the story is very cliché. The ending is ridiculous, Sonic Classic did not surprise the members of the modern era and the end was a total failure, neither did Modern Sonci give a damn about the classic. The developer thinks that Sonic has to act like a bowling game, which makes racing mechanics look like cell phone racing games. The avatar reminds me a lot of Sonic Boom, the unnecessary introduction of the Wisps is massive, they should not be in this game, Sega could have better explored the elements of Sonic Mania like the classic Eggman, the Titanic Monarch the HBH the emeralds and the Litle Planet. I bet Sega thought about putting this damn Sonic but that changed his mind during the critics. The game is very short and finally can be worse than Sonic Unleashed, Sonic 4 and Sonic 2006. Expand

Seeing Sonic getting beat'en up to how your character got to join up with Sonic's gang made me laugh. I mean, I should complain that much cause I got some laughs, but hey that's just me.

I have seen a lot of people call this "Straight Line Simulator" and they are pretty much correct in doing so. Compared to the excellent branching paths in Colours or the reactions-based rollercoasters in Generations, there isn't anything resembling competent level design in this game. If you don't run the way the designers want you too - full Boost ahead - you don't play the game.

Although there really isn't much to play at that. Clocking in at less than 4 hours on average, Forces relies on replaying stages for its lifespan. Many Sonic games are short, so this isn't too bad a complaint on its own. However the inclusion of too many gameplay styles means the game never truly gets to focus on its strengths in the short time it has to do so.

Perhaps most damaging of all though? The controls and physics. I am not exaggerating when I say early PlayStation platformers like Croc have better controls than Forces. Sonic, Classic and the Avatar shift across the levels so slowly they might as well be running through superglue. And when you suddenly speed up spontaneously, or plummet from unexpected surges in gravity, you know you're dealing with a poorly coded piece of software.

Sonic Team have created a cinematic, fast paced game for themselves and nobody else. Everyone will likely compare this game's failure to the success of Mania. Myself? I just find it a shame that the magic behind Colours and Generations may never return. An abysmal platformer, and a low standard Sonic title. Avoid.

I am genuinely upset I'm giving a Sonic Game a bad / low or even a mixed score. It really pains me to, but there's no way I can consider this a -good- Sonic game.

The problems don't start off straight from the bat - you have a solid first level and the first few stages after that are "good". They're not "great", they're "good". I'll be separating the problems I, personally had, based on each character.

Story: The story is as good as nearly any Modern Sonic game will get. Sonic has been taken hostage by Eggman, breaks free, saves the world. Standard stuff. For some reason though Sonic Team figured a Metal Gear Solid deep-like plot was needed. It is not.

Modern Sonic Stages are just like the stages from Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations, except they legitimately do not work. I found myself flying off the stage due to boosting, I've found myself getting bored by just normally running to prevent the problem I just mentioned. 2D Platforming occurs way more often than it's welcome to, usually with broken physics. You'll clip platforms or just straight up "land" but fall right through them. It's not a glitch - it's just wonky physics.

Classic Sonic: I, for one, am actually happy to see Classic Sonic again, but I feel he was only put in it due to fanservice. He contributes little to nothing to the story, and it hurts considering his stages are pretty damn solid for most of it - they play just like they did in Generations, wherever or not you liked Generation's Classic Stages, that's up to you.

Avatar Stages: Surprisingly, the Avatar stages work VERY well minus a few problems with power ups. You won't be told a recommended power up / weapon to bring and a lot of the time they're finished / you've completed the stage as soon as you started. (They're pretty short) - the avatar customization is pretty nice too, it has some great call backs to previous Sonic games, and an unlockable was Sonic's SOAP shoes from SA2 - which I loved seeing straight away. The Avatar is mute, so there's not much to say about them.

NONE of the stages, by any of the three characters, are notable for anything specific. You won't look back in 5 years time and say "I loved Forces - my favourite stage was (name)" - It just won't happen. Every stage, or a majority, is named after old Sonic levels (Green Hill, Metropolis, Chemical Plant etc) but none of them will stick in your mind at all.

Now that the stages themselves are out of the way, It's time to talk about Sonic's friends:

They're annoying. and not because "there's too many!" or "they're stupid looking!"

    they are just.
    annoying.

They don't stop talking - but due to the music blasting and the sound of boosting (though, remember, don't boost or else you'll go FLYING off the stage!), you'll only catch clips of what they'll say. But you better PRAY to god you don't hit a checkpoint and die whilst hearing a character speaking. They'll nonstop be barking and repeating their lines EVERY. TIME. YOU. RESPAWN.

    Gameplay: D
    Music: B+
    Story: C-
    Total Score: C

Final verdict: If you're a hardcore Sonic fan, I can't tell you if you'll like this game or not. I'm a giant Sonic fan and I'm into a majority of Sonic games, but I cannot enjoy this one. If you're looking for a pseudo-Sonic Generations 2, you've got it. If you want highspeed platforming with levels you want to redo and will remember in the future, avoid this game.

Boss ideas get recycled and you could swear that you've seen some set pieces before. Sonic Forces runs in the Hedgehog Engine 2 which is the followup of the engine used in Sonic Unleashed and the game looks pretty good because of that but something seems to be wrong with the physics... The momentum is super awkward and top speeds are very inconsistent throughout the game. Modern Sonic handles the best but even he is very flawed. Forward and left-right movement feels good but the moment you want to run diagonal the controls just stop to work. The Avatar has some serious acceleration issues and Classic Sonic is just so far removed from what he felt like in Mania and Generations that I couldn't adjust myself to these controls until the very end. Modern Sonics level design is very narrow and focused on the boost. There is only minimal platforming in these 3D sections which really bummed me out since Colors had some good 3D platforming parts. The story... well... it really doesn't even need to be there. "99% of the world has been taken over by Eggman" It makes no difference. Seriously! Characters are not explained. Why is Silver there? Why? I don't know. There's no reason for anything in this game. I only really enjoyed like 20% of the levels which in a game that took me 5h to beat is not much. The other 80% are either ok-meh or just plain not fun.
The 3 Shadow level were really good though it kind of feels like a different game for the time that it lasts... which is like 20 minutes max.

The main story is way too short. You can finish it in about 4 hours. Even faster if you don`t replay any stage to try higher scores.
I played it on the Switch. Most of the game has no stuttering or fps drop, but in some specific stages and moments you can get horrible fps drops.
Gameplay with classic Sonic feels very unnecessary. Feels like it was included just so the Generations fans would shut up.
The plot is strange as hell, specially if you compare to Sonic Lost Worlds for example. It is a bit too violent and the subject is a bit too adult - revolves around war and death in some moments. In some moments the plot feels like it was fan made.
To play with the avatar is cool, but I hate how the game fails to tell you in advance which Wisp weapon is best with each stage.
One can notice the lack of polish in the game in several points. Clearly they had a small budget or little time to develop it. That`s sad.
Over all I can`t say the game is terrible, but it falls in same pitfalls of other Sonic games in the past. I would say it is not nearly as enjoyable as Sonic Generations or Colors or Lost Worlds.

Sonic Forces may have created some hype but unfortunately, it mostly falls flat on its face as it quickly becomes obvious that this game is an exercise in disappointment. While the action runs smoothly whether on a television screen or on handheld mode, the game's short and unimaginative levels, the absence of gameplay mechanics that had become a staple of 3D Sonic games, the unreliable controls and the mediocre soundtrack all add up to a very flawed game from which a lot more was expected.
