All around disappointing experience that feels incomplete and leaves a lot to be desired, and especially falls short when compared to earlier titles that did much better with less development time and resources.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be honest, this game isn't bad. It's just very disappointing. In the months leading up to the release of this game, I was very excited. New villain, shadow and chaos were making a return and we could make our own avatar. unfortunately, when it released, In was very disappointed. First of all, you do not get to fight Shadow or Chaos. Chaos was only put into the game so that classic sonic could make a heroic return and save Tails. Infinite was a really cool villain, and he had a really good theme song, but he really could have been written better. He didn't create the sense of fear he was supposed to. Some of the boss fights are good and some of them are bad. The other Sonic characters just feel lifeless in this game as well. And Tails, Tails just lets Sonic get the crap beaten out of him by Eggmans minions in the second cutscene of the game. What happened to Tails?!! What did they do to the great hero from the adventure games?
The levels in this game are very short, and end before they really get good, though there are a few good ones. The longest levels are classic Sonic's and his are the worst and he doesn't get that much screen time. While modern sonic and the avatar control and play fine, classic Sonic's physics in this game are awful, which doesn't make sense as they perfected it in generations. The wisps made a return, but they were either useless or they broke the game. The levels have so much automation that they practically play themselves and in modern Sonic's levels, when it wasn't automated, all you needed to do was press the boost button to plough through everything, jump and homing attack occasionally, and get to the goal with absolutely no skill needed whatsoever. So basically, this was the first "boost to win" Sonic game. "Boost to win" was how the boost games were described, and lied about by haters until Sega made it a reality with Forces. The levels were also just too easy.
The story of this game is okay, but underwhelming. The idea of Dr Eggman finally fulfilling his dream and taking over the world is great, but they just didn't write it properly. Moreover, Sonic should have stayed "dead" for more than 30 seconds. The plot is that Sonic has been locked and tortured up in the death egg for six months, but then, just before the decent boss fight with Zavoc (the Death Queen), he's literally let go... just like that. To add insult to injury, Sonic doesn't look like he's been harmed at all. He doesn't show a single sign of being tortured and he seems happy as can be. And literally about 40 seconds after sonic "dies", We are told he is still alive. like, that's just stupid and very bad writing.
The areas in this game, I will say, are ascetically pleasing apart from chemical plant , Space Port. At this point though, I am so sick of seeing Greenhill and chemical plant though (and so many sonic fans are) and Sega really need to stop making sonic team bring it back all the time.
The level design is good sometimes and pretty bland at others. It's way too linier. And don't even get me started on how easy it is to get an S rank in this game. What happened to actual challenging level design? I know it's a kids game, but kids aren't stupid and they are fast learners, so it's not an excuse that this game is ridiculously easy.
Also, you no longer have lives, so dying has no effect on the player and is just a small annoyance. It means that we just don't even care about dying, because we will never get a game over.
I can understand why Sonic team went safe on forces after the abysmal failure of Sonic boom, but they still could have made this game more. Very disappointing game, but not awful. It can be fun for a casual, non-effort play. Unfortunately, It's not an absolute banger like Sonic Unleashed or generations. At least the majority of the soundtrack is good. I mean, The light of hope (the ending theme) is so heart warming, I love it. And Infinite's theme is a chef's kiss. Fist bump is alright, though it sounds like Douglas Rob was trying and failing to reach high notes. The Shadow also dlc is pretty good, however, it's only 3 levels long. This game was not the return to form and the return to Good sonic games like colours, generations and unleashed, that we were promised. 5.5/10. 55%

Very plain and boring. Its not an awful game, but theres nothing special about it, there's a lot of missed potential.

Or the avatar stages, the avatar creator is a very cool idea, and theres a lot of customization, but the stages themselves are basically just tweaked modern sonic stages, they dont take advantage of the wispons.
The controls are also very weird. When modern sonic goes in 2D for example, its almost like theres a limit to his speed, and he can only go as fast as modern with the boost. Hes also very slippery.
Classic sonic is even worse. He feels very heavy, and his jump is too short.

The level design isnt awful, but its very boring. Just straight lines with no branching paths.

Overall the game isnt bad, its just very mediocre. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone.

This game is a bag of missed potential. The new villain is lame, the boost formula is watered down, the avatar is modern Sonic without the boost and with a gun, and classic sonic is just there with physics worse than the classics (including mania) and even generations. Sonic Forces is the most mediocre, half-hearted game I've ever played, and I find this incredibly disappointing considering I was actually really excited for this game! I was initially rather ambivalent to the announcement of Sonic Mania and more excited for the announcement of this game, since I grew up with games like Sonic Colors and Sonic Unleashed instead of the Classic games. ButSonic Forces is the most mediocre, half-hearted game I've ever played, and I find this incredibly disappointing considering I was actually really excited for this game! I was initially rather ambivalent to the announcement of Sonic Mania and more excited for the announcement of this game, since I grew up with games like Sonic Colors and Sonic Unleashed instead of the Classic games. But after playing through Forces, it hit me just how average the game was, and I never once went back to it after my first playthrough almost 5 years ago.

The game's story and setup is actually something I envisioned as a cool idea for a Sonic game when I was younger: Dr. Eggman finally accomplishing his worldwide takeover and Sonic being placed in a much more difficult position to try and stop him. I was stoked to actually see that as a story for an upcoming game, but it unfortunately doesn't amount to much. The main villain, Infinite, is totally uninteresting, characters are brought back seemingly at random with no coherency, and everything is taken care of in a rather anticlimactic fashion by the end. The story didn't leave much of an impression on me, nor did any other part of the game. The avatar creation aspect is certainly a neat idea, but it doesn't save the levels from being completely and utterly boring, which is my main problem with this game. For as glad as I was to see the boost formula back for Modern Sonic, the stages feel like they're on autopilot for the whole game, with no branching paths to explore and hardly any enemies to give the stages a degree of challenge. The stages with Classic Sonic and the avatar aren't anything to write home about either; Classic Sonic's controls are awfully clunky and can make some stages frustrating to get through, and the avatar levels try to stand out with the inclusion of wisps, but they're very situational and some of them aren't very useful at all. The stages all blend into each other despite a variety of aesthetics, and the game is over after only 4 hours because of how fast you can breeze through everything. Not even the game's soundtrack left an impression on me, which is another aspect of the game I find disappointing because Fist Bump, Infinite's theme and Aqua Road's music were all released before the game came out and I thought those 3 tracks were all great! But the rest of the soundtrack didn't stick with me at all, and that isn't a good thing to hear about a Sonic soundtrack.

For how critical I've been of this game, I certainly can't bring myself to hate it, because it isn't an objectively bad game. It's perfectly functional and playable, but considering how excited I was at this game's announcement and how Sonic Team seemed to finally be getting something right about their franchise again, this is probably the most disappointed I've ever been in a video game. It makes me doubt whether or not Sonic will ever have a majorly successful game again, especially since the fans seem to know how to make a good Sonic game better than Sonic Team themselves. All I can hope is that Sonic Team can get their priorities straight, or this may be the best we can expect from future entries. You're better off just playing Sonic Generations, or even Sonic Suggests.

It was a Sonic game. I don’t have many words here, it’s a Sonic experience for Switch & PS4. I commemorate the attempt at a darker story (it was much darker than Lost World) but it didn’t really deliver. The level design can be pretty good as well. I don’t have many words for this game, it’s just okay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Forces might just be called Generations 2, but it should have been better. Warning if you did not see but this review has some spoilers so I recommend playing the game first but me lets get into it.

    1. Story: The story is not THAT different. Like honestly SEGA this is not Unleashed oh god. so the story is meant to take a darker tone and also chaos is in the cutscenes but we can't fight him in the game.

    2. Gameplay: It is much closer to how it worked in Generations with no trick system. So, there are 3 modes, Classic, Modern, and Avatar. Classic is 2D gameplay, Modern is high speed gameplay in 3D and the Avatar is basically Modern with less speed cuz no boost.

    3. Music: SEGA this is just a game. Like this music should play in my funeral cuz its sooooo headbopping.

So overall Sonic Forces is a really good idea for a game but it gets boring and the stages feel like the fastest thing period. But this game is great at the same time. Thanks

I would say, the game's not that bad. The only thing I can complain about is that the levels are too short and there are too many green hills in this game. Sega what I think you should have done was to combine some of the levels together making them a whole big level instead of making a 30-second level. Yeah, there would be fewer levels, but the bigger levels make it up.

Me, personally, I'm not entirely playing for the story, but I appreciate that a decent story is there and in tact. The bonus Shadow DLC is kinda blah at best. And the game overall is way too short. However, the positives? I feel like the 2D platforming is incredibly fun. Sure, its no Sonic Mania or any of the classics, but it brings a fresh, fun take on it, building upon some of the 2D platforming from Generations. The 3D platforming was a lot of fun, too. Some spots here and there may have been tedious, but overall, it provided for great gameplay. And while I didn't fully invest into customizing every aspect and unlockable for my character, toying around with the options was still great fun. Overall, a really fun game in its own right with a few flaws; this game does not get the credit it deserves, though. Expand

What Sonic Team needs to do is rebuild this game from the ground up, which would make it a Switch essential. Sonic Forces would greatly benefit from a story that takes more than 2 hours to complete in full, maybe up to ten, with a complete removal of Classic Sonic. A Shadow the Hedgehog-esque branching story would make it even more replayable. Multiplayer options, such as taking your custom character into raid-style battles on Eggman's massive Badniks with other players would increase the incentive to keep playing even more. Overall, Sonic Forces is a game full of unrecognized potential, and doesn't stay as long as it should, but is still fun and replayable to an extent. Expand

Sonic Forces may have created some hype but unfortunately, it mostly falls flat on its face as it quickly becomes obvious that this game is an exercise in disappointment. While the action runs smoothly whether on a television screen or on handheld mode, the game's short and unimaginative levels, the absence of gameplay mechanics that had become a staple of 3D Sonic games, the unreliable controls and the mediocre soundtrack all add up to a very flawed game from which a lot more was expected.
