There wasn't a moment of Romancing SaGa 3 that I did not love.

The mystique of its systems and world is one of its most captivating elements, but there is no question that it will be frustrating to those looking for a more familiar or traditional experience. I myself bounced off of previous SaGa games, in spite of a constant fascination with them, but I am happy to say that Romancing SaGa 3 has become one of my favourite JRPGs. If you’ve never dabbled in the works of Kawazu, the release of this remaster is as good a time as any.

Between Romancing SaGa 3 and two more English SaGa games on the horizon, it’s a good time to be a devotee of this oddball RPG series. Let me hear your rallying cry, SaGa fans: “There are dozens of us! Dozens!”

A difficult game only suitable for veteran players. One of the most challenging JRPG comes, finally, to Europe.

Romancing SaGa 3 is an interesting work of the last century. The gameplay offers freedom like no other game from the 90s. The visual and sound style of the remastered gives the title a second life. However, the history is a disappointment that offers interesting concepts, but at the end of the day, it does not achieve something memorable.

Removing the nostalgia filter, a lot of the gameplay elements of Romancing SaGa 3 simply won’t be that enjoyable for people who are die hard RPG fans of that era. Keeping that caveat in mind, fans of that era of gaming can find a lot to enjoy in this title, provided they are willing to deal with the lack of direction and unconventional approach to the JRPG formula.

Far less linear than most of the JRPG at the time, Romancing SaGa 3 might be confusing at first but it's for the benefit of a large leeway for the player. Already pretty in 1995, the graphics of the game are polished in this remaster. It remains feeble though, as it doesn't provide any interesting new features.

It's effectively a more complete and polished SaGa Frontier. You can play the game through many times over and never have exactly the same experience. The level of depth is absurd for any game from the era, and it holds up well today, given that you have the patience for it. Expand

I cannot understand giving a game a bad review because it's not like a more popular game. It would be like giving Dark Souls 6's and 7'sI cannot understand giving a game a bad review because it's not like a more popular game. It would be like giving Dark Souls 6's and 7's because it isn't like oblivion. This is pretty close to the Dark Souls of JRPGs barring games like Fear and Hunger that don't center around combat. There is actual challenge in the game. You actually have to talk about people, learn where towns and cities are before you can travel to them, build an actual character, manage your money, protect your party members from perma death. The ability to start with 8 different characters and spec 8 different weapons on top of magic creates massive replayability.

What do I hate about JRPGs?

There are no decisions to make. You're effectively on a haunted house ride.
Combat is so bad there is a fast forward button.
Spamming items during or after combat to heal.
There are no real threats. Any actual threat is overcome with mindless grinding.
There is no reward for exploring beyond pressing A in front of every crate and barrel.
At some point money is meaningless.

Romancing Saga removes all the little tedium of JRPGs and creates something more organic and intuitive. Casting magic makes you better at magic. Fighting increases HP. Using a sword makes you better with swords. Your party members can teach each other moves they know. Characters can die permanently like in Fire Emblem. Some enemies with slap the **** out of you, but going back to them later and winning is so satisfying. When you make money, you are literally exhilarated because you can finally buy something. Your part auto heals after every battle so you don't have to open a menu after every fight, select skill, then spam cure on everyone. You can save anywhere. You can fail.

Why would you want another 16-bit paint by numbers JRPG when there are countless ones? This ids the game. This is actual roleplaying. Discovering the world, making decisions, earning money, risking your life. This game should be far more popular than it is. The people who play JRPGs outside mainline Shin Megami Tensei want their hand held. They don't want to think about what to do next. They want to be told what to do.

Expand
