Nov 14, 2017While it’s reminiscent of Journey, The Wind Waker and Ico, RiME is so much more than a grab-bag of borrowed ideas. Combining art, craftsmanship, enigmatic storytelling and engaging gameplay, it does what the likes of Bound and ABZU couldn’t: wrap a powerful experience inside a compelling game. I’m still working out whether RiME is a masterpiece and, if so, where it sits in the pantheon of greats – but one thing’s for sure: if you love the games it’s inspired by, you’re going to love RiME as well.

Dec 8, 2017As a final interesting note, RiME was actually first revealed as a survival game with elements of health and stamina. While we may never see what that game was like, I’m thankful that developer Tequila Works opted for a deeper tale with that same boy on an island. While an open world would have been fun to explore, the segmented chapters help to tell a bigger truth. Though action would have helped bring more gamers in, laid-back puzzle-solving ensures that more people can freely explore and reach the end. A smoother presentation could have helped the game’s cinematic presence, but the story lives on despite it. RiME isn’t perfect or too original, but it does well to scratch the same emotionally driven story itch that trailblazers like Dear Esther and Journey have pioneered in the past.

Nov 21, 2017It might have its issues when you're playing it handheld, but Rime is still a real joy to experience on Switch.
-
Nov 15, 2017The problems which Tequila Works obviously have with the Unreal Engine are more evident on Switch than ever. Nonetheless this is still a very atmospheric and stylistically engrossing puzzle adventure.

Dec 6, 2017Had it run better, Rime would've been an easy recommendation. Its story offers a tantalizing look into a beautifully realized and poetically orchestrated world of magic, love and loss. Its gameplay, while simple, offers satisfying puzzles that guide the action in meaningful ways. However, severe frame rate drops and unbearable resolution compromises hold back the final product from the greatness it deserves. While there is enough good here to overshadow the optimization problems on display, avoid the Switch port of Rime unless you have no better option.

Nintendo Force MagazineApr 25, 2018A visually beautiful, constantly eye-catching adventure. [Issue #33 – May/June 2018, p. 75]
-
Dec 4, 2017Tequila Works has just about squeezed this beautiful game from other home consoles into the smaller form of Nintendo's Switch. Despite the chronic performance issues that are found throughout in this iteration, it all just about holds together well enough, and, thankfully, the core adventure shines through so brightly that gamers preferring to sample this on-the-go, whilst they are not getting the smoothest version, will be satisfied enough with the sacrifices made to make Rime work in the first place.
-
Nov 26, 2017While it’s an indie game with issues that stem from a lower-than-average budget for its size and the bugs that come with it, RiME still captures emotion and beauty as it tells a heartwarming story. The bugs can be frustrating at times, but aren’t reason enough not to play it. Rime will run you $39.99 and takes about six to 10 hours to complete. In the same vein as Journey, RiME is a capable entry into the ranks of these emotional and heartfelt types of games.

Nov 23, 2017We’ve been waiting for this version for a few months, and it’s disappointing to find that technically it’s not meeting the expectations. RiME is a great game, but if you can, play it on another platform.
-
Nov 14, 2017Rime on Switch is a game filled with qualifiers. The visuals are great, but the framerate’s awful. The puzzles are fun, but some are duds. The story borders on impactful, but falls short of making a consistent positive impression. Even with all those issues, Rime is enjoyable, but the Switch version makes it a lesser overall experience. I can’t speak to specifics, but if the framerate and graphics are better elsewhere, seek those versions out in lieu of this release. The allure of portability doesn’t make Rime a better game, especially with the compromised graphics.
-
Nov 13, 2017Ironically, just when we received patches for RiME at 4K, this port arrives, one of the worst we've seen and that does not do justice to the level demonstrated by Tequila Works the last month of May. Late, bad and expensive.
-
Nov 27, 2017Overall, RiME is a delicately-constructed experience sprinkled with beautiful moments, on the proviso you play the game exclusively docked to the TV. However, you should consider playing RiME on another platform to avoid the myriad technical and visual issues that come with the Switch port.
-
Nov 14, 2017Although RiME retains the charming artistic value and its emotional factor, the Switch conversion is very unstable on a technical level, a fact that affects the gameplay.
-
Nov 13, 2017RiME on Switch is a disappointing experience, despite the obvious quality of the game itself. As a puzzle-led adventure RiME is enjoyable, atmospheric and at times deeply moving; all of these qualities are undone by spotty performance, low resolution visuals and a frame rate which sputters along like a battered car engine. When played docked things are just about passable, but in handheld mode the game's technical problems sap away the satisfaction of playing it. If you have any other means of accessing the game on other systems then you should pick those over this port; while enough of RiME's magic remains on show, the Switch version of the game is almost crippled by technical problems which unfortunately rob this captivating quest of its lustre.

Nov 13, 2017Rime is one of those games that has all the potential to be one of the all-time greats, but falls short at the last hurdle. Choppy framerate and poor visuals in handheld mode hold it back from being a day one recommendation, but it's also an adventure that, one day - despite the flaws - you'll be glad to take.

Nov 17, 2017Quotation forthcoming.
-
Nov 14, 2017It remains - it is true - an intense, enigmatic and fascinating work that fits perfectly with the portability of the console and enjoys the pleasure of the HD Rumble. But, overall, lower graphics yields and so many (too many) frame rate drops impoverish the emotional reach of a game that, by virtue of its artistic extravaganza, would surely have deserved better treatment.
-
Nov 13, 2017RiME is a symphony of colors and music that deserves to be lived in depth. However the Switch version is full of flaws and bugs.
-
Nov 13, 2017RiME is a great game but one you should experience on another platform.
-
Nov 14, 2017I’m extremely glad I played through to the end, as the narrative of RiME is fantastic, with a gut punch of an end reveal that belies the whimsical look and feel that reeled me in to begin with. This makes the poor technical execution all the more frustrating – had it been better, or had I played it on the PS4, I might have considered this one of the high points in an already stellar year of gaming. Instead, I am left grieving what could have –should have– been.
-
Dec 13, 2017These graphical issues are profoundly disappointing because I think Rime is a great game, but the Switch version is a technical mess with no signs of future improvement. The gameplay is fun and relaxing, the soundtrack is phenomenal and when it’s running on anything other than the Switch – the visual design is gorgeous. You could play Rime on the Switch, but I strongly recommend getting it on a different platform to save yourself the headache.
-
Nov 21, 2017RiME is still a wonderful game, but the Switch version is a tremendous porting, that can seriously ruin an otherwise unforgettable experience. You can overlook the downgrade of the resolution, or even the lower graphic detail, but the palette is faded, the pop-in is terrible, the frame rate unstable, and all these combined can seriously discourage everyone.

Nov 28, 2017There’s a great game in Rime that’s dying to get out, but a myriad of flaws mean you’re never too far from another immersion-shattering glitch or freeze.
