Graphics: Mediocre and unpolished. Animations are stiff. Models still look lifeless and robotic. Objects don't have physics. GF really need to improve on the visuals and animations. It looks depressingly subpar to other Switch titles.
Performance: Like previous titles, expect frame drops, especially in forest or cave areas and in battles.
Music: Nice remixes of the original R/B soundtrack. Pikachu and Eevee are voiced as if from the anime, which is jarring but adorable. However there is STILL no voice acting.
    Gameplay:
Capturing-As frustrating as Go. The chain mechanic was a good idea. But Pokemon run away randomly, breaking your chain. Sometimes they jump around just to be nuisances. Motion controls work alright, you can use the stick in handheld.
Wild encounters-Every battle is like the Safari Zone. You can throw berries as bait for different effects and then pelt it with Pokeballs. Your own pokemon don't help, which made battles feel lonely and repetitive. The pokemon in the game are only from Gen 1, so there's not much variety either. Ironically seeing Pidgey and Rattata everywhere was a big complaint when Go first released. Even FRLG had ways of capturing later gen pokemon (Sevii islands sadly do not return). Likewise, seeing Pokemon walk around the fields made the world lively.
Walking/Riding Pokemon: A beloved feature. However it was disappointing that you can ride so few of the available Pokemon. But it's one of the few reasons to play this game.
Portable PC-Actually kinda useful, since I like to swap my team around. However it doesn't have a lot of freedom to organize since it assumes you only ever use your main team. They tried to make it look identical to Go.
Refresh-Makes a return, but sadly, only for your special partner Pokemon that you start the game with. Most you can do with the other Pokemon is talk with the Pokemon following you or that you're riding on.
Battles-I'm no competitive player, but they removed way to many features, like held items, abilities, and EVs. Now you can OP your Pokemon with candies. Your starter is overpowered to a silly degree, but it cannot ever evolve.
Go-I don't play the mobile game because I live in the country. However, in trying the features, they're horrible. The switch struggles to connect to your phone. I really had to fight with it. Once you bring a pokemon over, it can't ever go back to the mobile game. They also locked a legendary behind it, in the most arbitrary way possible.
Pokeball-It's a neat little device. There are short cut commands you can find online to help with gameplay fluidity. But it works as they described.
Controls: In docked mode, you must use motion controls, but in handheld mode you can play with the stick, motion controls or gyroscope. The motion controls are responsive and I had no problems with them.

Over all, it's a very mediocre and somewhat disappointing entry to the mainline pokemon series. Let's Go takes so few risks that it ended up removing features it feared its casual players would struggle with instead of encouraging players to learn the mechanics. It gives the impression of cash grabbing from nostalgic adults and Go fanatics. There's no point of buying it for the mechanics as the mobile game is F2P, and the nostalgia can be revisited through FRLG, a remake that has more content and challenges by comparison to Let's Go. Even Let Go's graphics aren't enough of an enticement, as the models and textures are unimpressive to look at and the game's performance is laggy.
GF really failed to impress this time, which seems to be a running problem for them ever since XY. And Sword and Shield isn't turning many heads as it looks far too similar to an upscaled USUM. Pokemon games are becoming repetitive and lackluster.
Should you buy?: It's not a game I would recommend or say stay away from. It just exists. Try it if you like what you hear, avoid it if you don't. You aren't missing much by skipping it, and Sword/Shield release later this year so you won't be starved for Pokemon games. Kids may find it an enjoyable experience, but experienced Pokemon fans would probably get very little enjoyment out of it.

Ok, some people say that Pokemon Let's Go is nothing but a waste of money, and to that I say no its not! This game is perfect for beginners and was a perfect gap for Pokemon Sword and Shield. although when Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield releases at the end of 2019 there is no point in picking up Let's Go Pikachu or Eevee.

When it comes to gameplay though, the removal of wild battles in favor of GO-style catching is a bummer and there's really not much to do once you've beaten the main campaign outside of battling some trainers and rematching the gym leaders and elite 4.
New to the game is candies which let you boost stats further than used to be possible. This can make the game way easier but is also interesting in that it can make otherwise unviable Pokemon be useful for once. I'm also a fan of the fact you can mount some Pokemon in the overworld like Arcanine and Charizard, which makes the game feel more alive.

Overall, this is a nicely presented remake of Yellow version but it just doesn't offer enough content for the price point.

Catching mechanic is interesting and engaging, but they should have added a toggle on/off. There were a few things that added to its charm and appeal, such as being able to dress up and play with my Pikachu and having a Pokémon follow you around. My Pikachu seemed quite strong, and if you got Mew with the Pokeball plus, the game became extremely easy. I put about 85 hours into this game and caught most of the dex, but have very little desire to pick it back up again. -It's one of the more freeroaming Pokemon games, you can catch most of the legendary Pokemon with only 3 badges.
    Cons:
-Mew is locked behind a $50 paywall. I only got him due to Black Friday marking it down by $30, and even then the first Pokeball Plus I got didn't contain the Mew despite being new.
-The game is appealing to a casual market in a series that is already casual as is. The game is too easy and holds your hand a lot, even blocking off gyms untils you got Pokemon with a certain advantage.
-Post game is lacking. You pretty much level up your Pokemon inorder to battle the strongest trainer of that respective Pokemon.
-The catching is not explained very well. The mons would jump around left to right, and the game doesn't tell you how to throw the ball inorder to reach them. The game's tracking is also poor, making it so your ball will sometime be thrown the EXACT opposite way you intended.

The game is fun, but the problems it carries brings it down a lot. 6/10 game, knocking down a point for the Pokeball Plus thing.

Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu: (22.12.2018 Review Date)

After I was very skeptical about the game at the beginning, after watching various Twitch streams I got the mood for the game and I haven't regretted it. I finished the whole thing after 28 hours and 04 minutes with 100 Pokémon caught.

    Story:

You don't have to say much about a Pokemon game, it is typical and in the special case of Lets Go Pikachu everything is already known, as it is a Pokemon Yellow remake. But I have to honestly say, I thought it was great because it creates a lot of nostalgic moments, be it puzzles that you can remember or arena fights, etc. Wonderful.

    Graphics / performance:

This is where the game takes the biggest step. The graphics are very pretty and go great with Pokemon. The rendering is very good for the remake. I don't really have anything to criticize here, except that there can sometimes be minimal FPS fluctuations, which I could live with.

    Gameplay:

Also here some changes to Pokemon Yellow and all other Pokemon games before. What is meant, of course, is the lack of random battles in the grass, etc. At first I was skeptical, but I have to share the opinion of most of the people that it fitted in very well and also felt very good to see the Pokemon on the screen that you want to attack in the grass or in the case of Lets GO wants to catch. I found the level system with the new capture system similar to the Pokemon GO mobile app very pleasant. I didn’t miss to weaken individual Pokemon in battle first in order to be able to catch them then. Especially because there are MASSIVE lots of Pokemon Trainer battles.

I never had experience problems, the EP divider, which now applies to the entire team, was of course very helpful again. In terms of difficulty, the game was incredibly easy at the beginning, because Pikachu and Eevee are also simply OP, but then became more difficult over time. Overall, the top 4 was no longer a problem with my team from Pikachu, Vulnona, Entoron, Turtok, Bisaflor, Charizard (LvL 60-66).

The controls always ran smoothly, only when throwing the Pokeballs to the right with the JoyCon I sometimes had a bit of problems.

The only thing I didn't really use was the candy system, there are just so damn many that you quickly feel overwhelmed.

    Content:

Even after the top 4, there is still a lot to do, which I will take a moment to do. E.g. visit some people (boarding house, etc.), complete Pokedex or defeat the master trainers for each Pokemon. You can also rematch the top 4 and the arena manager from Vertania City.

    Conclusion:

I have to say I'm looking forward to the upcoming Pokemon Game 2019. I would love to catch and level a mix of the current Pokemon Go-like and see the old random fights. I'm also looking forward to the next generation and of course the hopefully existing possibility of catching all previously available Pokemon in a new graphic splendor.

There is nothing else to say about Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu itself than that I had a lot of fun and was really pleasantly surprised. For me 9/10 special sweets.

Oh yeah, abilities are also gone, which makes the competitive extremely weak. The new rival is probably one of the worst in the series, being a generic friendly rival that has no conflicts to make him interesting or endearing. The gameplay is so easy that it makes X & Y look like Dark Souls. Also, your starter, while the partner Pikachu and Eevee were pretty interesting concepts, and the idea of them having unique movesets of different elemental attacks is pretty good...on paper. Instead of just one at a time, they straight up made it so you can have your entire moveset just OP moves. Before you say "oh but Pikachu and Eevee are weak" well not in this game, especially with the game's mechanics. The partner variants have higher stats, so giving them one at a time would've been enough. I get that this game is catering to Pokémon Go players, but even with that excuse, it's poorly executed. And to top it all off, this game has nothing new. You can criticize X & Y all you want, but at least there it had something new and interesting to it. What does this game have going for? Melmetal. That's it! There's no reason for it's existence except a cheap cash grab that makes me feel disgusted. It gets worse every time I see it, and I hope to god they don't make another game like it. But if they do, actually make it good. Expand

Looks beautiful! But it sucks. It's a little bit too much casual-directed, that's why this game is not for me. The only thing I really like about this game is that we can see Pokémon in the overworld now. And they can be outside of their pokéball and walk alongside you, but not inside buildings, not even the little ones. That sucks.

Very casual games, but with pokemon, that's not a problem for me at all. The graphics are kinda nice, the music is outstanding and they absolutely nailed ride and following pokemon (and then forgot how to do it in SwSh and BDSP), wich shouldn't mean so much to me, but it does. It also really nicely remixes the original encounter tables and introduces overworld pokemon to the series!

Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee are remakes of Pokémon Red & Blue and are pretty underwhelming remakes at that. For the average player, this game is a great experience and is not too challenging as it builds itself as a game for newcomers into the series who have no experience with Pokémon or have dabbled a bit with the mobile game Pokémon Go. However, for the diehard or big Pokémon fans, this game feels like a slap in the face and a dumbed-down version of such a great game. It's not too offensive for the fans but is very mediocre and hardly offers any challenge. It's great for Nintendo to try and introduce newcomers to the series, but as the first Pokémon title on the Switch is does everything but make the Pokémon fans suffer. Throw away all strategy and fun that the Pokémon series is known for. The catching mechanic has been implemented directly from Pokémon Go so you don't actually battle the Pokémon when you catch them, just a simple toss from the joycon or a click of A. You catch them based on a ring, Green meaning easy to catch, yellow meaning moderate to catch, or red, hard to catch. But unlike the mobile game, if the ring is not green, don't expect to catch the Pokémon with a regular Pokeball because it's borderline uncatchable. In Pokémon Go you could still catch a red ring Pokémon with a regular Pokeball, in this game it feels like there's no chance. Speaking of the joycons, the control scheme of this game is so poorly made, there's no option to play on the TV with a Pro Controller or Joycon Grip, just a single joy-con or a Pokeball Plus. I bring up again that challenge is nowhere in this game, I'd be lying to you if I told you I lost many battles. Losing in Pokémon teaches you to use strategy in your second fight that you didn't use in your first battle, but as said before, unless you're new to the series, you won't lose a lot. You would also think that a game on the Switch would show some evolution to the series, but the animations in the game are stiff and have almost no flash. It stays true to the original games as every animation is pretty static. I've never finished the game and probably never will as i find almost no reason to. That being said the game introduces wandering Pokémon which is one of the only positives I saw from this game, as being able to see the Pokémon before you walk into it stops you from running into Pidgeys & Zubats over and over again. It appears to me as Nintendo wanted to make a game that would draw in old fans of the series by making the game Red/Blue remakes, but it comes off as a shameless cash grab as this game isn't worthy enough to be comparable to those games. If you don't know much about Pokémon and have always wanted to get into the series, this game is obviously made for you and you might enjoy it too! And for Pokémon Go players this game does appear to have some sort of functionality with the mobile game so maybe it might interest you. But for a big fan of the series, this is one game you probably won't regret skipping. Expand

A remake of the blue / red / yellow pokemon saga without further ado, very faithful to the originals. GameFreak needs to evolve in the technical and artistic section. We are in 2019 and it seems that it is not a nintendo game with these GameCube graphics. As it is a remake after all, what less than adding voices to the main characters, which they have not done. I do not recommend it.

FireRed/LeafGreen is the gold standard that a Gen 1 remake should aspire to. It remakes all the original content with the graphics, audio, bells and whistles that you'd expect from a GBA game. Plus it adds the Sevii Islands - a new endgame region.

Let's Go Pikachu by comparison is a barebones remake of Pokémon Yellow.

You know... the game where you start with a Pikachu and obtain Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur from various NPCs just because Nintendo wanted to cash in on the success of the Pokémon anime.

The main difference is... there's also an Eevee version where you start with the Pokémon that was Blue's starter in Yellow instead - because double money for Nintendo!

Which begs the question for the consumer: Do YOU want an electric type that refuses to evolve or a normal type that refuses to evolve, and that's why I think everybody went with Let's Go Pikachu, because let's face it, Eevee sucks.

So much of Pokémon Yellow's DNA is in this game that it's shocking. Even Jessie & James appear as occasional boss encounters, and just like with Yellow, have hardly as much character as they do in the anime.

Whole heaps of content synonymous with Pokémon as a series have been gutted out for the sake of simplicity, sanitisation and parity with Pokémon Go. A few examples:

    1. Random wild Pokémon battles have been removed in favour of a Pokéball throwing minigame that works passably well with the Switch's controls.

    2. Your smack-talking rival from the original game, manga & anime series, has been replaced with a friendlier, more boring, more lame and more sanitised "friendly rival." Trace is frankly an insult to fans of Blue and Gary Oak.

    3. The Celadon City Game Corner has no minigames. It's not even like in HG/SS where the slot machines were replaced with other minigames. They're completely gone.

    4. No bicycles. Cycle Road is now Pokémon Road and you can traverse it by foot. Mounts have been added to the game but they just feel so weird and janky, especially when you automatically dismount just to jump from a ledge and remount after you land.

    5. HMs are now Secret Techniques which your companion Pokémon can learn. This means that you're dependent upon your starter to use moves. Thankfully, the combat version of these moves are repurposed as MMs in their original locations and TMs are reusable...

    6. The Safari Zone has been outright removed and replaced with "Go Park", a place which allows you to bring Pokémon from Go into your game. It's a one-way trip, by the way.

These are just a few of the glaring problems that Let's Go has as a game. It isn't so much a remake as it is a low-effort rehash. The game is competently made but it's not what you'd expect from a Gen 8 Pokémon title. It feels like some failed experiment to create a game that has parity with Niantic's hit mobile game which backfired tremendously.

It also adds to the “cuteness factor” this game has with Pikachu & Eevee. Am I sick of seeing them plastered on every piece of marketing involving Pokémon? Yes. They’re still adorable in game though. I also like how they brought back Pokémon following you & how shiny Pokémon actually appear shiny in the over world, why they didn’t bring that shiny feature back in SwSh (aside from the DLC you’d have to pay $30 for just to have Pokémon follow you, wild Pokémon still won’t appear shiny tho lol stupid af) is yet another bafflingly stupid design choice that they can add to their shamefully long list of stupid design choices. That’s where the positives end & I have to get angry with TPC yet again. Why.. WHY are you remaking Kanto AGAIN?! Who is asking for this trash?! Kanto is the most boring & generic region out of all the Pokémon games I literally cannot name a si how memorable location that wasn’t done better in another Gen. Even most of the Pokémon in this Gen are either ugly or dumb, aside from a handful of good ones. How this boring ass generation continually gets preferential treatment over half a dozen other BETTER gens is beyond me. Nostalgia sells & GameFreak is gonna milk it until I’m dead clearly. They’ve been out of ideas for a while now but this game really put the nail in their creative coffin imo. These games just shouldn’t exist. The extra time and resources that went to these games should have gone towards Sword & Shield, maybe they wouldn’t have turned out the way they did if things went that way. At this point I’m so sick and tired of seeing the same 151 Pokémon and same tired ass region that I will never touch this game again, or any like it. Stop the Gen 1 pandering & start taking some goddamn risks again for the love of Arceus. This ain’t it. Save yourself the time and money & go play FireRed or LeafGreen instead. Or move onto better franchises. Expand

This game is a terrible, lazy, disgusting excuse for a Pokémon game. Don’t buy this trash.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Like all Pokémon games, Let's Go Pikachu has that familiar core gameplay to it. There's just something so intrinsically fun about adventuring through a region, gradually raising the strength of your team and defeating various other trainers as you do. Let's Go Pikachu does a good job at preserving this familiar setup, and I had no trouble getting absorbed in this game the same way I get absorbed in pretty much every Pokémon game I pick up.

One of the cool things about Let's Go Pikachu is that it also presents a few welcome changes to the long-held standards of the franchise. For starters, catching has been completely overhauled, modified to appeal to newcomers who enter the franchise via Pokémon Go. I thought this was a pretty cool way to shakeup the formula and set this game apart from its predecessors. Wild Pokémon encounters have also been changed, so that you can see various Pokémon wandering around in the wilderness before you encounter them. Although its more of an aesthetic thing, this change really went a long way for me. Not only is it easier to avoid unwanted encounters (though they still do happen), it also adds a lot to the visuals of the Kanto region, and makes the world feel more real.

Speaking of visuals, the overall look of this game is also very nice. There are a lot of new cutscenes and added animations that make the game feel much more alive than previous 3D Pokémon games have been. The designs for all the important characters (including the protagonist, the gym leaders/Elite Four, all the bosses, and a bunch of supporting characters) are all really nice looking. The environments also look neat.

Pokémon walking behind you, a fan-favorite feature from HGSS, is also finally back, and actually improved somewhat. You can control which Pokémon walks behind you (instead of it just being the one in the first party slot), and you can do more than just walk with them. There are ridable Pokémon that replace the bike, flying Pokémon that let you soar through the sky (post-game only though), and various water Pokémon that'll take you through the ocean (after you get the surf secret technique). Unlike the mounts from previous 3DS games, these are all your own Pokémon, and interacting with them like this helps with the art style to make the game one of the most immersive Pokémon games.

But the game is not without its pitfalls.

Let's Go Pikachu adds plenty of new features to the game it's based on, but preserves many of its flaws as well. The plot is just as tacked-on and empty as the last time these games were remade. Once again, Team Rocket show up to do lots of generic villain stuff. Giovanni is just as forgettable as ever, having almost no presence outside of the two times you battle him. This should hardly come as a surprise to those who've played the originals (or most Pokémon games) before, but it's still disappointing.

Similar to this, I am of the opinion that the Kanto region is the most boring region in Pokémon, geographically at least. There are a couple cool areas here and there like Pokémon Mansion and Lavender Tower, but they pale in comparison to landmarks that came in later games. So even though they look nice, they're boring to play through.

Regarding the gameplay, I have two main complaints: the repetitiveness and the EXP gain.

I can't recall if it was like this in previous games, but it felt like every route was absolutely flooded with trainers. Getting through areas like the Rocket HQ, Rock Tunnel and most of the later-game routes took me literal hours of fighting trainer after trainer after trainer, over and over again. And nearly all of these trainer battles have absolutely no strategy to them, requiring only mindless button mashing. Because of the limited pool of Pokémon this game has, you also end up fighting the same handful of Pokémon dozens or even hundreds of times.

In spite of this forced grinding, gaining EXP is extremely slow. Even when consistently facing Mons that were ten levels above my current one, it could take forever to gain even a single level sometimes. I'm the type of person who likes to rotate Mons in and out of my team pretty routinely, and this was especially frustrating for me because it felt like it was encouraging me to just capture six Pokémon early on in the game and only use them.

Also, quickly as I'm running out of characters: some of the in-game models were missing light-mapping in battles (which looked weird), and Pokémon walking behind you could get glitchy. The postgame also requires lots of grind. Like so much grind I didn't even bother.

Let's Go is most fun in the beginning, when everything is new, and in the end, when your progress starts to add up. But in the middle, there's a lot of slog to get through. As a long-time Pokémon fan, I could overlook the game's numerous flaws and get a lot of enjoyment from it. But if you can't do the former, you probably won't be able to do the former.

The game is great for what it aims to achieve. However I was personally not a huge fan of the catching mechanic, compared to the traditional formula. This entry in the series feels significantly easier than most, making it way shorter than most main line entries prior to this.

worst pokemon game ever. i see that they tried to integrate pokemon go and console games. but you have to spent hundreds of pokeballs to catch YOUR OWN pokemon that you transferred from pokemon go. also, no post game content available. i thought that "yes, i beat elite four now i can sail to sevii islands" but guess what? there are no islands! this is literally the worst pokemon game ever.

It's nice to be a 2D game, and for pokemon go fans and those who have never played the first generation it's very enjoyable, for more niche fans it's just another game, since it's still a remaster and it's lost the most important essence of pokemon, the fighting, due to its absence and its low difficulty. It's acceptable, but it won't go down in history.

Extra Notes: My first game on the switch so obvious bias. The game was way to easy, but I liked it as my first Pokemon Game and finishing the main story line faster gave me time to complete the dex or other things.

A simple, nostalgic return to the Kanto region, offers little if you are a series veteran eager for complexity and challenge. But if that's not your main interest, Pokemon Let's Go has it all! It's a simple, cute and fun game that will keep you hooked for hours. An excellent starting point for newcomers, and a great nostalgia trip for those in a search for one.

It’s hard to make sense of the game that’s basically a Switch port of iOS/Android remake of Pokemon Red/Green. Is it a step forward, step backward – or maybe just a shameless cash-in? Turns out, it’s a great remake – the world looks exactly as we imagined it back when we were staring at black and white pixels of original Red/Green. [Issue#235, p.44]
