This Paper Mario Game was one of my biggest disappointment in my video game history. At first you are amazed about the beautiful graphics and artstyle but then when you enter a battle you can't believe what they have done. I really hated the battle-system so much that i cound not go on with this game. For me it's by far the worst Paper Mario game ever created!

After reading many reviews that gave it a bad score I didn't got it until 2023 when it was discounted. Surprisingly I liked it a lot, the game is really good. The combat may get some times a bit tedious if you don't want to think but is not so bad as others seem to think.

Paper Mario: The Origami King was a fantastic gaming experience. I milked this game for as long as I could because I didn't want it to end. To be honest, it did not hook me right from the start. This is not because it was not compelling enough, but as a traditional Mario gamer it took me a while to resonate with the new characters that played a massive role in the story. It did not take long for the plot to hook me though, and once it did I couldn't put the game down.

I do not understand complaints about any game being too long. If you're bored of a game, just... stop playing? People who enjoy games want them to continue. It's not like this game was overly repetitive - in fact, I'd argue the opposite. The ability to explore new settings, meet new characters, and the variety of objectives kept Origame King fresh throughout the entire story. The toad collection was repetitive but it was not much of a requirement to advance through the story so it could be ignored. Paper Mario games have always included humor and charm (shoutout to Gourmet Guy), and Origami King is no exception to this. The humor is very clever - got a few good laughts out of me. Of course, as an E-rated game it is a bit cheesy, but not in a cringeworthy way. I personally do not take much pride in beating a game as quickly as possible, I prefer to take my time and enjoy the experience. For those considering Origami King, I'd suggest taking such an approach if you do decide to give it a shot.

Like others, I did not love the puzzle solving battle system. Unlike most others, it was not nearly egregious enough to ever make me consider putting the game down. It added another complicated element to the heat of these RPG battles, and while I see the vision, the execution was lacking. These battles are of course a huge part of this game, so this was the only reason I did not give Origami King a perfect score. That being said, the music for these battles was an absolute masterpiece. Truly one of the best pieces of VGM to ever enter my ears. Contrary to everything I said to criticize the battle system, I would find myself seeking out enemies just to bop to that banger. That music absolutely slaps. Great OST throughout the game but the battle music takes the cake. Also, the boss battles were not affected by the flaws of the battle system in my opinion. I thought the boss battles were fantastic.

Overall, Origami King was a great time and I would suggest it to anybody who enjoys RPGs, adventure, Mario games, etc. I'd put this on par with the original Paper Mario for N64. Both games shine in different ways, but the bridge between them is a fantastic story that makes you never want to end.

Paper Mario is fun, because unlike Mario Odyssey, the story is humorously designed with allusions. There are a few mini-games that are entertaining, but not a must. The game can be played through 100% with skill without having to grind. The battle system takes some getting used to, (I haven't mastered it yet), but the attempt to create something new. One of the best Games for the Nintendo Switch.

Played it after 3ds and it improved a lot of things from that one, but still some things just dont make sense for an RPG turn based game, like not leveling up, so usually you dont want to enter any fight.
I actually like the new art style with everything papery so I think its a very beautiful game also with great graphics. It is very comic and engaging, did almost 100% and had a great time.

As many already have mentioned, it has a terrible battle mode. There is absolutely nothing entertaining about it, and I try to avoid it, whenever I can. I wish they'd made something more cohesive. The game feels like 100 ideas slapped together and then a story was formed around those ideas, which is why parts of the game are jarring or feel like an utter slog. I found the new battle system oscillated between too easy or too artificially difficult, and not a lot in between. The summoning circles interested me at first because they reminded me of Tearaway, but they ended up feeling forced and clunky instead of organic. The collectibles are pointless and seemed like a way to artificially add content for the sake of adding content. Overall, this didn't feel like a PM game and didn't have the quality I expected, and even though I went in with an open mind, I still didn't care for it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was initially hesitant upon getting this game due to the reception of the last 2 Paper Mario games, but I’m glad I did. In my opinion, this is the best Nintendo-published Switch game of 2020. The visuals are gorgeous; the slightly tweaked art style created to fit the origami nature really pops and makes the world seem much more alive. The soundtrack is great (I especially love Autumn Mountain’s music), and the writing is simultaneously quite funny, serious and heartwarming all at once. There were many moments in the game that left an impression on me in a very good way, like the lead-up to the boss battle in Shogun Studios where Mario was acting out scenes of a play in real time and the calming ride down the river in Autumn Mountain. Additionally, the areas of the game are so much more fun to explore and get lost in than Sticker Star or Color Splash. The world is interconnected in TOK and that is much better suited to this kind of game than separate stages. Plus, the locations aren’t quite as basic or rudimentary as they were in Sticker Star or the NSMB games. However, the game certainly isn’t without its problems.

I complimented the writing and some parts of the story, but others were quite uninteresting. Olly is uninteresting as a villain and so are his motives; he only wants to create an origami realm because he hates the toads. That’s it. And on the subject of characters, there aren’t many that left an impression on me besides Bobby the Bob-omb (who ends up dying later on). Olivia, the companion character, can be frequently cute and wholesome, but not enough for me to have that much of an attachment to her. In terms of Mario himself, he has a few new abilities in this game, but they’re somewhat limiting. The 1000-Fold Arms technique allows for Mario’s arms to stretch out and grab certain creases on the wall to progress, but it’s context-sensitive and can only be used with a corresponding Magic Circle on the floor. It’s not used in battles or with solving puzzles or anything. Mario can also throw confetti to patch up holes in the ground, but that’s literally the only use it has. It doesn’t play into the battles in any way like the stickers or paint did in the last 2 games. And in terms of the battles themselves... Oh boy. If anything, I can commend Intelligent Systems for trying something unique and new, but the battles in TOK are cumbersome, frustrating, and worst of all, meaningless. It’s set in a ring where you have to line up the enemies in certain patterns that enable you to kill all of them at once, so it’s essentially a puzzle you have to solve before actually being able to attack. To me, it just takes a longer time than necessary to get going, especially if there are multiple rounds to the same battle, and it only lasts longer if you don’t line the enemies up perfectly. Yet if the battles get anything right, it’s the fact that they don’t use stickers or cards, meaning you will absolutely always have a means of attacking the enemy, which is wonderful. But in the end, none of that matters because you get no EXP from battles. All you get is coins, which are everywhere in the game and SO numerous. At least in Color Splash you were able to upgrade your paint capacity via battles, but in TOK they’re absolutely worthless. And the boss battles? I absolutely hate them (but I also kind of love them). There are a lot of boss battles in TOK, from the Vellumentals you have to defeat to utilize their powers later on, to real-life objects like a bin of colored pencils that make no thematic sense in this game. In the boss battles you have to clear out a path to reach them and beat some sense into them, but there are a lot of tricks they pull to make it harder. More often than not, it’ll be reaching the bosses that provides the challenge more than the actual attacks the bosses have, and it’s infuriating most of the time. To me, the boss fights are the worst parts of the game by a mile. However, the 1000-Fold Arms technique is actually utilized in the boss fights, and if you have motion controls turned on (yes, motion controls are something you can optionally use for things like 1000-Fold Arms and some other areas) you can shake the controller to beat the bosses senseless, and I am not exaggerating when I say that it’s one of the most therapeutic experiences I have ever had in a video game. It is SO gratifying that it almost makes up for how frustrating the journey was getting there.

I know I spent much more time talking about my critiques with this game than the parts I enjoyed, but I really did have a great time with it. I would absolutely recommend this game, but I recommend playing it as an adventure game instead of an RPG. Skip the battles and you’ll still have a really fulfilling experience. I clocked in around 30 hours when I was done with the game so there’s still quite a bit of substance without the battles. Overall, this is a great game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not like the other paper mario games in that it barely leans into its rpg elements and is just puzzle. And, unfortunately, the puzzles are frustrating, where you have to memorize what order they're supposed to be solved rather than enjoying putting the puzzle together. And, we're talking all battles, with the vellumentals being the worst and everything after just getting progressively worse. Add to that Oliver or Ollie, or whatever the main secondary character's name is, is so annoying that I legitimately felt like leaving her under the rock she gets smooshed under later in the game and this is a game you'll get about 3/5 of the way through (hence the 6/10 rating) and then will probably quit, trade in, and get a game you might actually enjoy. It is very pretty though, probably the only enjoyable aspect. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The soundtrack is phenomenal. I don't think I've ever heard such incredible music from a Mario game. It really feels like I'm Paper Mario, doing whatever Paper Mario does. Honestly, the battle system is better than people say. I like how this game handles puzzle combat. The best part about this game is it's basically color splash and sticker star but it adds a few things from the older games to get the best of both sides. The dang environments are Origami and they each have their own banger theme to them so it's just a win to hear a track and explore the beautiful Paper World. It really feels like this is peak Paper Design here. It even has a similar mechanic as color splash where you fill in a part of the environment! What makes this even better is the new gimmick made possible by motion controls. It's wacky, it's creative, and it's enjoyable! The best part is, you get to use it in battle too! Now aside from the flashy art and effects, there is instances where some attacks might be very ineffective to the boss's health but there is obviously a more effective way to deal with each of them. The plot is as simple as writing your own name on paper but that's just another mario trope. The action is great and even though there isn't any EXP, Mario still grows a little stronger just by collecting Max-up Hearts which I like doing. The battle system doesn't really have much strategy and half of the time it's the same puzzle you gotta solve but because of the exaggerated effects and the music, I don't think you won't be running from too many battle just because of how flashy this game is! As usual, you play as Mario, in his paper form, in a world made of paper. You are going to the Origami Festival near Princess Peach’s castle, and, as happens in literally every game, something terrible happens – in this case, Princess Peach has been folded up into a horrible mind-controlled origami replica of herself by the titular Origami King. You soon learn that all of Bowser’s soldiers have also been folded up, and poor Bowser himself is little more than a square with a face.

Naturally, it falls to Mario and his origami companion, Olly’s sister Olivia, to save the world.

You proceed through six (though actually more like fifteen or so) distinct zones, each of them capped off with a boss. As you go through the game, you learn more about the origins of Olly and Olivia, as well as recruiting a rotating set of companions, some of which are familiar faces and some of them entirely new ones.

Well, okay, not entirely new; you’ve seen their types before, but these are original characters.

There are some surprisingly emotional moments in the story, but mostly, it is just silly – which, while okay, rarely excels. There are some fun gags, but it’s all very light, and not tremendously memorable. The serious moments in the game ARE memorable, all the more so for how surprising they are and how much they contrast with everything else.

Unfortunately, there’s only really two of these moments, and the second one doesn’t stick around enough to really impact the player.

Sadly, the actual game half of the game is no better. Replacing standard TTRPG combat is a puzzle wheel system, where you rotate enemies to line them up to either smash them with your hammer or hop on their heads. You get a bunch of durability based weapons that can only be used so many times before running out, but you end up with enough of them (and they are cheap enough to buy) that you never DO run out, and basically it feels pretty much entirely pointless beyond “Do I use weapon A, B, or C against this enemy type based on the line up?”

The bosses use the same system, but instead of you lining up enemies, instead Mario starts out on the edge of a circle and the wheels have to be aligned to create a path for him, set up with arrows that tell him to move in a particular direction, with other panels that boost his attacks, allow him to attack the boss normally, or to use special “magical” powers, the last of which have to be enabled with “on” switches that are hidden in treasure chest panels you have to run over to enable, which also drops hearts and coins onto the battlefield.

The bosses are really the highlight of the game mechanically, and are all reasonably enjoyable; the ordinary combat encounters are honestly basically pointless, as they are fundamentally all the same and don’t really add much to the game.

Overall, though, the core gameplay is pretty epehemeral. The bosses are really the only parts that are at all memorable, and going through the game, most of what you’re doing is not particularly interesting or exciting. They try to throw in some gags, but honestly, most of the areas are just kind of there and most of the environmental puzzles are straightforward enough that it just doesn’t sell the game to the player.

All in all, Paper Mario: The Origami King is a game that is hard to have strong feelings about. It wasn’t bad to play, but at the same time, it was rarely actively good, with the strong parts interspersed with what was fundamentally filler levels that don’t challenge the player in a meaningful way. Only a few points did anything really clever, and the rest of it was just mildly clever at most.

Alas, this makes it hard to recommend, though I wouldn’t say it is bad, either. It’s merely mediocre – and with so many good games out there, there’s a lot of better things you can do with your time and money.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is better then Color Splash. That is no achievement, or a standard. Compared to the rest of the series, it’s fine. As a stand-alone game, it is superb. Let’s go further in.

The story is very good. Mario and Luigi go to a festival, which would be a recipe for disaster if it were sticker themed. Toad town is deserted, so the bros venture inside the castle.

The story is very good. Mario and Luigi go to a festival, which would be a recipe for disaster if it were sticker themed. Toad town is deserted, so the bros venture inside the castle. Mario and Luigi find an oddly angular Peach, who drops them into her dungeon. Mario, now alone, finds Olivia, the sister of King Olly who has turned many of the inhabitants into Origami. He wraps the castle up in some streamers and Mario and Olivia get away. This is the most emotionally compelling Mario game. Play it yourself to see what I mean.

The gameplay is more action and puzzle based. When you do find an enemy, you battle it in a ring-like style. You’ll like the overworld more then the battles. The gameplay is good.

They go all out with the paper theme. It’s no Luigi’s Mansion 3, but it looks very good. The locations look nice and are interesting, like Shogun Studios, which is a Japan-Styled theme park. The music is insanely good, a standout being the Shogun Studios theme.

There is about 15 hours of story. I wouldn’t 100% it, as that may take very long.

A criticism I have is that the characters don’t look interesting. A lot of people say they don’t like it, and I kind of know what they mean. If you’re interested, I’d recommend it. You’ll like it, trust me.

The game itself is fun with lots to enjoy. It has very witty dialogue, probably the best in the series, and some truly memorable characters despite its limitations. The world is detailed and beautiful, probably one of the best looking games on the switch. The story itself is fine, with a few highlights coming from Bobby and in Bowser Castle, though I feel it would be a lot better if it took itself a tad more seriously. The gameplay itself is also fine, with fun overworld puzzles and a decent amount of exploration, but so often it feels like the developers are fighting against invisible restrictions placed onto the game for no real reason. It feels like so many areas could have been expanded and brought new life. Instead Mario assets we've seen a million times over make up most of the cast and I just can't get past that. The Ring Combat system is okay, but it does get old over time, especially on a second playthrough. I feel like this game is designed to only be played once and then to be left alone, on a second playthrough so much of the game simply doesn't have the impact it did the first time around, even if you wait over a year after its release. It's definitely a step in the right direction for the series and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a goofy RPG that isn't a major challenge.

    Great soundtrack
    Amazing visuals
    Interesting environments

My only gripe with it is the battle system and the fact that there's no incentive to battle, but the rest of the points more than make up for it. EDIT: 2 years later and the game grew even more on me. 9/10!

After that I got hooked on Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, which repeated the fate of The Origami King - I abandoned it at the point where you have to defeat the enemy only with perfect kicks. In a month I'll come back to it and I want to believe I'll drool over it again.

Paper Mario: The Origami King was a turning point for me, after which I started to trust Nintendo more. And if a game seems uninteresting at first glance, it's better to try it anyway and form your own opinion. In my case, it worked with Fire Emblem, and a month ago I would have laughed in the face at someone who said I would play turn-based tactics and drink tea with anime girls.

The game is a puzzle game with ring based combat sections sprinkled in there. To get it out of the way, the combat is frankly pointless, the only reward is coins, which are also almost pointless. Coins can be used to buy battle items or collectibles that feel insanely overpriced in some instances. Boss battles feel sort of repetetive besides the Sumo Bros fight in the latter half of the game. Even the final boss doesn't attempt anything new, simply rehashing ideas the player has already encountered and most likely got bored of, as I did. It didn't feel worth it upon completion, and I simply enjoyed Colour Splash more, still better than Sticker Star, however. I just hope we get a remastered trilogy of sorts on the switch. Expand

Your first battles are good but after a few time the gameplay starts to be boring it's the same board and techniques over and over again if it didn't have the timer it would be extremely boring. The boss battles are an exception though, they're actually really unique on their own and they need a little more strategy to be defeated.
Basically, this new entry to the Paper Mario series has a lot of charm in it's characters, world, story and boss battles that are all unique and many times unexpectable, It's a shame the regular battles are boring.

Sometimes you may do a certain move too early & then have to do it later, but the game may not tell you that or give a hint. It can be confusing.

This game also has partners, but they aren't helpful in battle. The best they can do is leave a basic attack & you can't even control them, you also lose your partners after a section of the game is completed.

Also, this game is kinda short for the story mode, the game takes around 25 hours to beat without going for %100. These games take 4 years to come out in between titles so a longer experience for the next game would be nice.

Overall this game is a step in the right direction for returning to the Paper Mario classic formula. But it has design flaws outside of it not being like the other games.

Olivia is adorable, though talks abit too much. However, there are alot of glaring issues i have with the game. Firstly the combat, it mainly sucks. I can handle it, but if i see any other game with this combat system, i will avoid that game. While the combat is not as bad as i thought, its really a chore having to line up the enemies. If i fail with the line up, not all enemies might be defeated. Its kinda annoying struggling with basic Mario enemies like Goombas or Koopas. Oh yeah and there is no level system, why? Don`t know, but what i do know is that i don`t like it. My biggest issue with this game is that i feel it lacks both originality and creativity. All enemies are just standard Mario enemies, Goombas, Koopas, Shy Guys, etc. The only difference is they are Folded, but thats like a 0,1% difference. The levels are just your average Mario levels, deserts, mountains, forests. And while i love those kinds of levels, they get boring very quickly. And the game is teeming with Toads, too many Toads. They are also all the same. Different clothes, but their faces looks exactly the same and its dull. Coming of years of playing Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time and Bowser`s Inside Story, this game dissapointed me. Its a fun Mario adventure and it looks amazing, but the lack or creativity, originality and a frustrating battle system, that also lacks a level system makes this game a most dissapointing one. I will check out previous Paper Mario games like Super Paper Mario and TTYD, but i will avoid Sticker Star and Colour Splash. I expected more uniqueness from a Mario spinoff and its not a bad one, just a very dissapointing one. You can do better Nintendo. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly didn't know what to expect from this game, I wasn't expecting much, but I was shocked to see how the game managed to do just about everything right. Granted I will still never be able to hold this game to the same praise that everyone does with the first two Paper Mario games, but this game did some things that make me believe that a game like those two is certainly not unreasonable to expect from Intelligent.

There is so much good in this game that I'm honestly not sure what I should praise in this review, the visuals in this game are absolutely stunning, quite possibly the best in the series, and all the areas are very appealing, and the gimmick of almost everything being origami really makes this game stand out from the two games it descended from.

On top of that they fixed the biggest sticking point in the game, battles are now no longer a net loss, since stickers and cards are no longer a thing, you now have weapons you can equip, and these weapons are not gone immediately when you use them, instead breaking after repeated use, which may be a turn off for some people but for me that definitely is a good idea, one which I'd prefer as opposed to losing it immediately. Plus you can get accessories which basically act like badges from the first Paper Mario games, which definitely helps.

But if you thought that was good, wait until you hear this: they added back partners! Ok well not like in the first two games but still in certain areas characters will follow you around, now in battle they aren't as useful as the first two games cuz they will just choose whether they want to actually be useful or not, but it's nice that they're not forgetting the original games.

And for the first time in 2 Paper Mario games, the story isn't just a boring Bowser captures Peach narrative. Instead it's a story about an evil Origami King Olly wanting to fold everyone into origami so they will be loyal to him. And unlike a crown from the sticker star or a paint can from a fountain, your main assistant in this game is Olly's sister! That's incredibly awesome especially since we haven't had a story that isn't Peach kidnapped by Bowser in a long time.

Now I will say I do not have any big issues with this game, instead only a few small issues, issues that don't really affect the game that much.

Now the biggest issue I have with this game is with the tutorial, you cannot skip it and it explains the entire system in excruciating detail for just about the entire first area. This is okay for first time players but for those replaying the game it is torture, this could've easily been fixed by just adding a skip tutorial option.

But surprisingly for the first time, I actually don't like the bosses that much. Well specifically the ones guarding the ribbons, the Vellumentals are sick, I don't wanna bash on them. But the Legion of Stationery I have a big dislike for, especially since they're all things from the previous two games, you got Colored Pencils, Rubber Bands (I actually kinda like this one but only a little), a Hole Punch, a Tape Dispenser, Scissors, and (although not guarding a streamer) a Stapler. These bosses feel really uninspired and I feel like they could've tried to get them to work in other ways than this.

Even with those few negatives, I feel this game is very well-made, and I would even recommend it to people who consider Sticker Star and Color Splash to be absolutely awful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 游戏时间:30小时+
    游戏平台:Nintendo Switch

The game is mostly simple and easy, but these puzzle elements are ramped up during boss fights, which I found horrible. During boss fights, you must create pathways to attack. They are usually littered with obstacles, you have limited turns, are on a timer, and often have to pick up items along the way. There is a specific way to beat them and you have to figure it out on the fly. It is needlessly complicated and vague.

This game has faults, but they are outweighed by a good soundtrack, a heartfelt ending, and many unforgettable moments and characters this game has to offer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Origami King, is it a game changer for modern Paper Mario? Looking back, RPG games have always opened up whole new worlds within the Mario universe. At the time, all of them were viewed to most as masterpieces. Whether they be Paper or Mario & Luigi games. With the original Mario RPG being such a nostalgic big hit, players could feel that same spirit within the majority of the spin-off games. Heck, even classic Mario Party gave life to even the most minor of characters. The world of Spin-off Mario is like innocent fan fiction, & if your lucky you'll actually find a brilliant story found with in one of them! The RPG games did this best by adding dark themes & clever writing in order to create one hell of an awesome adventure. I myself, have had the utmost respect for the noble Mario RPG lineage. I still remember making cut out drawings of the characters & item attacks after seeing some of those awesome boss fights. And then, came the manifestation of malice itself...STICKER STAR! With poor though game design & a focus on big effects, it let the spin-off fans down HARD. I didn't even care about studying Color Splash at the time. Thankfully, Origami King drew my attention & took the risk of not studying the game via Youtube play through, just so I could experience the game myself. I usually negative with most Switch games after being let down by Pokemon Shield, but my god...I had one heck of a ride. This time, the evil King Olly & his Origami Zombie Army have taken control of the Mushroom Kingdom, & its up to Mario & Princess Olivia to save everyone from being folded. Now let's go over my list on how to make a solid Mario Spin-off adventure. Bowser isn't the main villain...nice! The creation of Mario RPG games aren't about just opening new worlds, they had all of sorts of dark themes & great villains like Dimentio. And while in the end its revealed that King Olly was just blinded by rage...its still loads better then yet another generic "Bowser gets ultimate power" plot. And with Color Splash serving as a reminder to put in better level design. These game features a very nice variety. You've got your classic Super Mario Bros 3 world themes, a bundle of new themes, & a collection of elemental temples. Shogun Studios was one of my favorites, with its upbeat battle theme, hilarious theater mini games, Easter eggs, & a really fun boss fight at the end. That's it, these Switch graphics are beautiful! Of course this game may look & sound freakin' good let's talk about the highlights. Mario has a new "1000-Fold Arms" ability, which he can use to reveal hidden parts of the area & bust out savage attacks on his foes. And it feels really sweet to use anime-style attacks alongside Olivia's Vellumental Guardian techniques. I would say Nintendo's trying to attempting to create their own version of Pokemon, but I would prefer another Fossil Fighters sequel. These moves are also used during boss fights...THAT AREN'T GENERIC MINION FIGHTS! Thank the Star Sprites that I recover a bit after Sticker Star. The boss line this time includes the Vellumental Spirits, but this time we also get to face the Things from Sticker Star & Color Splash. And these showdowns are legitimately awesome. A simple box of colored pencils is turned into an artistic sniper assassin with some fun trash talk to go with the highlights of the battle. But that won't stop Mario from busting out his O'Chunks arms to claim victory .The writing not just for these fighters, but for all of the characters in general, hasn't been this sharp for a long time. Bowser's minions are hilarious, the endless Toads are given better designs, Olivia is naive at times, but is still a nicely designed character, & its nice to see the old society design again! Now remember Nintendo, not all of the Shy Guys, Goomba's, & Troopa's in spin-off games work for Bowser...& don't you forget it. As for the downsides, I think there's too many extreme Mario Party mini-games. The Shy Guy game show in particular was just a mess. The line-up battle system can feel stressful at times, but you can use coins to buy extra time & go practice at the battle lab. But during these tedious ring mini games you don't have that ability. And I think this game is stressful enough with the Paper Macho Chain Chomp & those **** Scissors! But dark moments also make up the greatness of classic Paper Mario, & that the Bowser Castle stage was full of all sorts of insane battles. DID YOU SEE THE PAPER MISTAKE BEETLE? Its intense, but one heck of a great level! I think my biggest gripe with this game was the King Olly battle. Your just fighting a bundle of Vellumental bosses, helping Origami Bowser knock out Super Olly, it follows up with yet ANOTHER tedious ring mini game, all within 1 level that claims to be a world. Overall, I still declaring this the new 3rd best Mario game, it has surpassed Super...barely. If the tedious puzzles were nonexistent, I would've given this game a higher score. But good show! Expand

While the game clearly doesn't follow the traditional series's formula, Paper Mario: The Origami King is still great on its own. The writing is excellent, the humor is enjoyable, and the gameplay can sometimes really put your strategic brain under pressure.

"Paper Mario: The Origami King" is a competent entry in the Mario RPGs series, but it's saddled by a repetitive combat system that struggles to feel exciting.

    PROS:

    - STRONG CENTRAL IDEA: The game picks up the idea of a paper-based Mario world and really runs with it. The central story, pitting "flat paper" characters against origami and papier-mâché villains, is good fun. The idea has enough steam to sustain the game throughout its long duration.

    - MEMORABLE CHARACTERS: Some of the characters and their dialogues made me smile throughout the adventure. Buoyed by its characters, PM:TOK also dares to go places that you wouldn't necessarily expect in a Mario game, and it's all the better for it.

    - GOOD BOSS BATTLES: I have my reservations on the combat system (see below), but some of the boss battles do work fine. I found myself looking forward to the next large-scale clash.

    CONS:

    - LACKLUSTER COMBAT: The puzzle-like combat system is one of those weird one-off ideas that only Nintendo could decide to use in a triple A game. It's daring, but it gets old real quick. As I went through the same process for the hundredth time, I wished for a way to skip regular combat encounters and move straight to the bosses.

    - PACING ISSUES: There is a cliche that RPGs should be long, but this one could have used some trimming, especially in the combat department. The ending tries to feel epic, but to me it felt like a Disney movie dragging on for too long. All in all, I enjoyed PM:TOK, but I wished it would end a bit sooner.

    - WEAK RPG MECHANICS: This game clearly tries to be an RPG, but the RPG-like mechanics feel mostly irrelevant, and feel like they could have been scrapped safely.

The fetch quest nature of the story made it feel very tedious and drawn out, but then every so often something really off-piste happens and you are left wondering why that didn't happen more often. Prime example randomly you are just in a massive open ocean area and told to explore.
Fighting the "Vellumentals" didn't appeal at all, especially as I only got to use their powers when it was given to me in special battles.

So the game, which should make combat the most fun and core element, becomes an arduous slog to avoid combat as much as possible. Each combat becomes a punishment to you and your time.
Like, honestly, it is similar to freemium mobile games that have built-in ads. The feeling is not "hooray! fight time!" and it's more, "do I have to? I've done 2 already".

On the positive side, the music is wonderful and the scenery is amazing. The graphics are awesome and it is a generally good looking game. Although it was shame Nintendo wasted it.
The battle system is confusing and doesn’t really add anything to the game, especially because you don’t gain rewards from battling. It’s just a hassle.
Secondly, the characters are painfully unfunny and annoying. The whole game you have this “helper” named Olivia and she constantly talks and none of the dialogue is intriguing in any way. I tried so many times to skip what she was saying because it added nothing and wouldn’t let you progress.
The story is pretty boring. You walk around and fight a few guys and whatnot. It’s not very outstanding or special like I had hoped.
Really, I wouldn’t be too upset about my purchase of this game if it wasn’t $60. It would be a fine $20 game you can get to pass the time, but $60?! I wish I could’ve bought something better instead.
