I expected paper mario to be more like thousand year door, nintendo is too gimicky you dont need to make gickics in every game if its not broken dont try to fix it. No need to change the battle system and the rpg aspect.

Many of the justifications and changes made to the series in recent years have been focused around making the game accessible to “all players” or the causal crowd. Such a policy is in line with Nintendo’s game making philosophies, but PA:OK misses this mark and the mark for veteran appeal as well. The vocabulary and writing in this game is both snappy and enjoyable. However, it’s written closer to a 9th grade level then the standard 6th, meaning many younger kids will not understand what they’re reading. The puzzles for the combat is fairly straightforward. However, number our challenges, especially the boss battles will more then likely be too difficult for children to complete. However, as the puzzles possess no real motivation to be completed, i.e. the only reward is coins a a small bit of confetti, veteran players will not want to keep battling, as it’s not rewarding. This problem of identity is further highlighted by the combat system itself. Tanabe (the game’s director) refuses to use an experience system within the game. Yet he continues to maintain the battle system of constant encounters. Without a way to level up or improve one’s stats, why would anyone want to keep engaging in combat designed to entice participation by its rewards, which advance your character’s performance. If Paper Mario is for now on going to be what this game is and Color Splash was, then they need to abandon their combat system, as it’s current system ruins the whole experience. OK’s combat should’ve just been the slide puzzles, no combat at all. As a personal wish, but one that was not present in this review, I wish they’d just make a classic Paper Mario game and allow Mario in an RPG again. Expand

Terrible game. Nintendo needs to do away with Shigeru Miyamoto and Kensuke Tanabe, otherwise they risk to kill any trace of creativity within the company. Terrible game, terrible battle system, and though Nintendo says it's not an RPG, what's the point of adding turn based battles then? Dont buy this!

This game is not one I would recommend. It has a very generic story, unappealing characters, a tedious and unnecessary turn-based battle system that has no place in an action adventure game like this, and worst of all, is being sold at full price. Save your money and get another game.

There is no controllable partners, no interesting battle commands, the plot is extremely basic as is the bland world which is literally just endless toads. And worst of all, there is no point! The rpg puzzle battles not only take a very long time, and waste your weapons, but you get no experience points AND they don't prepare you for boss fights which act completely differently. You can quite literally skip, avoid, or flee every non scripted battle in the whole game, thus rendering PLAYING THE $60 GAME YOU BOUGHT kinda worthless. There is no positives to this experience. Do not get it. I have gone through until the 5th Streamer and I can not stomach playing any more of this video game. "But you cant judge a game if you haven't finished it!!" Look, if 20 hours of a game does not grab you or is THIS horrible, why should I bother stomaching another 5 or 10 hours in a dumpster fire like this. In short, this thing is not only the worst paper Mario game, but proof that Nintendo is willing to dumb down their beloved ips just because people will buy anyways. Expand

I'll get this out of the way now; there is no exp in this game. Hardly an RPG by any right, and because of this, battles become utterly useless as all they let you do is rack up coins. While they are useful, you'll find that you can have way more than you need without really trying. And although the world looks pretty, it just doesn't feel as good wandering through it as you avoid every enemy like the plague. I'll say one positive note is the boss battles; while they are as generic and lame as could possibly be, the fights themselves are fun, and involve a bit of strategic planning to do the most damage.
In summary, if you look at this as just a mario game, and ignore the fact that it has a Paper in the title, it's a serviceable entry to the series. It is ABSOLUTELY not a true Paper Mario game, but a pretty middle-of-the-road Mario game. Play it if you like the visuals and want to experience the story, but pass it if you think it's going to be the next best Paper Mario game you've been waiting for.

Two hours in and I'm getting really bored. I read all the reviews and was hyped this might actually be "the one", the long awaited decent Paper Mario game. Good story, music environments, battle systems, partners are back, finally!... Oh... wait a second, not really.

    Cons / Just OK:

-Coming from TTYD, combat makes no sense. You do a ton of damage even if you miss the cues, you can essentially one hit anything. The puzzles are boring, hand holdy (you get 2-4 puzzle spins and attacks!) and tedious.

-No exp, no real rewards from battle. You're instead SHOWERED with coins. Will we finally hit millions or even billions of coins in the next iteration of this game?

-I'm easily entertained, I laugh at almost anything, but I need to ask, where is this humor everyone keeps talking about? I smirked once or twice, but that's about it. Haha, Luigi dropped his hat...haha...?

-Contrary to what some have been saying, the environments are just OK in my opinion. It almost feels like people have forgotten how vibrant other Paper Mario or even recent Nintendo games have been. Have we forgotten how beautiful Animal Crossing, Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, etc, have been? This game is no where near that level of epicness yet some reviewers are claiming this game is on a whole other level. This game feels just like par for the course.

-Maybe just the way the game is designed or just me, but it feels like the game is running between 20-30 fps often.

-I have no opinion on the music, haven't noticed anything standout or bad either way.

    Pros:

-I do appreciate the dark story. If you think about it, it's really **** up at times. You'll have your first taste of this dark story during your very first fight. But not just the dark story, the story overall is VERY well put together and different from any Mario game I've played. I won't spoil anything, it's something you need to experience yourself!

-There is some clever and cute puzzles in the outer world. You need to really investigate an area sometimes to make sure you got everything from it. Sometimes I would spend several minutes trying to figure out how to get to that one ledge or spot. There's also a lot of hidden areas too which is nice.

-Bowser being an ally has some interesting implications to the story and I appreciate this change. It does get old with "Bowser bad guy again" trope.

    Overall

Overall, I think that the battle system has once again been the downfall. I'm not sure why Nintendo experiments with every iteration of this game when they know exactly what would work. If you put in the old battle system, I EASILY can give this game a 9-10. But since Nintendo can't bear to listen to its die hard fans, I have to give it a 2/10.

Back to the Bug Fables, a real "Paper Mario" game.

Indeed, I've always been in love with the Paper Mario art style, ever since I first played Thousand Year Door back in middle school. Sad to say, I've tried just about all of them, and with the *POSSIBLE* exception of Super Paper Mario, they have all lacked the RPG magic through which Thousand Year Door had won over my heart. Each new Paper Mario release is a more hollow shell of their legendary Gamecube predecessor, with the heart and soul of the game - 1000 yr Door's *actually fun* turn based battle sequences and *crucial* leveling system - smashed like an origami Toad under Mario's puzzle-solving hammer, leaving the miniscule spark of spirit that remains in the franchise to be painted over (no pun intended - PS Color Splash sucked too) with ever-shinier visuals and marketing in an attempt to hide the fact that ever since those Gamecube glory days, Nintendo just keeps missing the mark on delivering an ENTERTAINING gaming experience with their exhausted Paper Mario franchise. I stupidly pre-ordered Origami King, as I do with every new Paper Mario (I never learn my lesson) with the earnest hope that somehow, someway, somebody at Nintendo will realize that the main thing that made the Paper Mario RPG fun was that it had... hmmm... lets see.... RPG ELEMENTS. Origami King lacks all elements of an RPG except for a storyline, which I guess I could admit was relatively decent for the first 3 levels/world portions that I managed to get through before being permanently sedated by the almost savagely boring gameplay, which revolves around painstakingly searching visually-stimulating environments for Toads folded into dumb shapes and sequestered in even dumber hiding places, with a heavy dose of doing-your-best-to-avoid-agonizingly-unsatisfying-puzzle-battles-with-classic-mario-series-villains. In my dream scenario where Nintendo actually reads and processes any of the above grievances, I'm sure they'd retort by ignoring 90% of them and fixating on the final point: "no! These Koopahs are different, you jerk! They're made of Origami now!!!" Touche, Nintendo. Touche. Now be a dear and walk me through the Nintendo eShop refund process before I have my boy Mario bop your pretty Origami head with his hammer. Expand

The normal battles are very easy and only a few times did I fail to complete a puzzle from battling. If you are running of time, you can pay for more time, if you can't figure out the first step, you can pay 150 coins to get the first part of the answer. Coins are very common and worthless as they can be found respawning in the world or after finishing a battle. This makes battles nearly impossible to lose. Battles don't give you anything other than coins and confetti since both are very common in the world, they make battles pointless. To do more damage during battles, you need weapons that you can buy or find for free in the world. Weapons break so you'll need to keep getting new and better weapons as they break. I've never needed to buy any weapons as I found the free weapons were more than enough to get me through the whole game. Later in the game, some bosses start having one hit OKs and they are pretty BS but at least avoidable, but avoiding them makes them super easy. I also didn't like the bosses, most of them were way too easy and short or annoying. The elemental bosses were super annoying. I did like a few of them tho, not going to so which because I don't want to spoil it.

The world is very pretty and looks very nice. Mario moves very slow and doesn't do anything but walk making moving around very boring and long. Some areas have vehicles and they were fun to drive at first, but halfway through, they overstay their welcome. You can fill in the world with confetti to get more coins or new areas or find toads to maybe get something or nothing. I found both boring so I never wasted my time on them. You have to go around and destroy the streamers blocking the entrance to peach's cattle, doing so lets you hold more confetti, which is useless since you can easily to get more.

However, I can say is that there are small sections of the game where the game mixes things up in the overworld with some fun random event. I'm not going to say exactly to avoid spoilers. But, It's what kept me coming back to play. It had me guessing what's the next random thing they'll do.

Overall, there are fun and funny moments but my problem is that in between is very boring and pointless gameplay. So, I'm mixed but leaning towards didn't like it.

This game appears to be a fun and unique "adventure game" but when playing it just falls apart. The combat becomes horribly boring and brain dead easy. The only fun parts of the game are the boss fights and yet the final boss is so disappointing and void of charm. This game lacks all the charm and heart that makes paper mario games fun and it's clear Nintendo has given up on this f ranchise.

It's a kids show, and that's what this game is. It's just a game, not more, not less, it does as much wrong as it does good, so it's a 5. Just mediocre. Even though the RPG elements of the older Paper Mario games were so simple that even a toddler could understand them, the growth system has been completely removed, instead relying on finding the occasional heart container or accessory to become stronger over time. Battles that aren't mandatory feel pointless and are usually not worth the effort, since the only reward you get is coins, coins, coins, and more coins. The confetti mechanic feels wrong, since confetti is so common, I have no idea why there is even a limit to how much confetti you can hold. "Oh, I ran out of confetti. Time to walk over to some trees to get some more." The confetti mechanic feels like it's there mostly to pad out time. Bosses, while admittedly creative, aren't all that memorable and are laughable in comparison to some of the stronger designs in the series. There are many other issues with this game, but it's a good time-waster if you're looking for that. As for me, I was hoping for a more robust, involved Paper Mario. While the world exploration scratches that itch, the combat, the confetti, the character designs being mostly lackluster, and the pointless combat encounters crawling through the stages leave a bitter taste in my mouth, where I expected a sweet one. 4/10 for me, but again, if you like this game, don't let me rain on your parade. The past few installments I’ve skipped out on because I’ve heard they deviate from the RPG style of the originals. I had such high hopes for the Origami King.

    Pros:
Funny. The dialogue will have you laughing, which I always loved about these games. The graphics are great too - big, bold, lush colors, and lots of well-crafted environments and characters.

    Cons:
The battle gameplay. Horrible. NOT FUN. An actual nuisance to understand, much less enjoy or master. Brutal, unexplained battle rules that change without any notice, preface, or reason. One of my favorite parts of Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door was the battle mechanic. This game has completely ruined that aspect. Boss battles are boring, regular battles are annoying, and the motion mechanic is a headache. (You have to quickly shake, slam, lift, etc. your Switch over and over again to defeat bosses). Poorly thought out and even more poorly executed.

Each battle is accompanied by a “puzzle” - you have to line enemies up in a certain way in a certain time frame. It is seriously unfun, and often stressing and frustrating.

There are no EXP points. So basically you get some extra health as you go through the game, but even that simple element from the original games is gone.

    Summary:
Honestly, I don’t know who this game is for. Fans of the originals will dislike the major game changes, and new players are more likely to enjoy Odyssey or something in the classic Mario vein. I started out earnestly trying to like this game, and have ended up regretting buying it the more I’ve played it. I will definitely be trading it in.

Impressive sound design and a wholly cohesive art experience cannot compensate for the horrible battle system, the non-existence of original designs and shoddy story. While at times very charming, the game goes overboard on its 'humor' to the point where it doesn't take itself seriously anymore ultimately culminating in (ending spoilers!) King Olly's motivation being literally a gag. After reading some recent interviews this game feels like the epitome of developer talent being channeled into obviously wrong directions. The Origami King peaks very early and only gets worse the longer it goes mainly because of a wholly defunct battle system which should never have been anything but an occasional gimmick. Disappointingly only a 4/10 for a game that nails a lot of details but somehow manages to fail spectacularly on its very basal level.

I wanted to go in liking this game being a paper mario since the very first game but this game just has a lot of the design flaws that sticker star and colour splash had. First of all battles are again feel really pointless although I will admit later in the game you do somewhat feel like you need to battle to get some confetti but honestly I think you can just play this game without battling most optional enemies which is a real shame.

The battle system itself although creative I don't find fun at all. At first it seems intuitive but when for every battle your on a timer it feels really stressful at times with how your going to plan out your next attack which is something I never really felt even from the sticker star and colour splash games. Also although it neat that they introduce equipment rather than stickers and cards it's annoying that they break and it kind of goes back to battles feeling pointless because I'd rather save my stuff for required boss fights and encounters rather than optional enemies.

It's really quite a shame because I think what this game needs, or the series as a whole, is to fully commit to either the RPG side or action adventure side because this series since sticker star proves that you can't just half put into both the RPG aspect and action adventure aspect. Stick to one and I think maybe you can make a good game out of it but until then we will just have these weird design problems that plague all these games since sticker star.

The characters you meet are all generic. So they can't be lovable, everybody knows that but apparently Nintendo is against it nowadays. We all know what a goomba or a koopa looks like, and we're quite fed up with seeing the very same model over and over. Wrong.
Exploration is also broken, and it's tied to the battle system : the only hidden things you will find around (a staple of JRPG and the first three Mario RPGs) are clone toads to free. Not equipments, weapons, stuff to make you stronger, change your strategy, nope, you only get toads. Freeing a toad is useless, but allows you to unlock artworks. So you got no motivation in exploring, it's boring.

I love JRPG, I love Paper Mario on the N64, its sequel on the NGC, I love Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest XI, the first Mario&Luigi etc. I'm totally fine with slow paced adventure, turn by turn fights. But here, it's just not working. It's a failure, in a time where Nintendo is meeting great success, where Nintendo finally brought back the Mario 64 formula for its platformer with incredible reception, but for Paper Mario, we're stuck in the wrong loop since the 3DS, and unfortunately, this Switch version is not what people wanted, is not what fans want.

I gave it a 4, which is an extremely severe rating for me, because two days in a row I stopped playing, not because it was 3 AM and I should really need some sleep, but because I was bored and frustrated. It's not something I ever experienced with a Nintendo game, I'm so disappointed.

Edit: Unfortunately, after spending a lot more time with this game, I have to admit it was a total waste of time. As a result, I have to lower my score from the initial 4/10 to 2/10. The more you progress, the worse, and the only thing that keeps repeating in your head is the thought "this game was written and designed by idiots!" In terms of narrative, the game tries to be initially fun, but ends up being pathetic. OK, I know - it's all forgivable. You say that many stupid decisions were made in this game (not even counting the combat system), but still the game is overall OK. Below overage, but not a total disaster. I could agree for the most time. However, what happens at the end of the game is just overkill. Somewhere later in the story, you have a mandatory "mini-game" (yes, that Shy-guy show), in which after scoring 100 points in fairly easy but wrongly designed challenges (you always know the right answer but rarely have enough time to align the wheels... ), as "the icing on your frustration cake" you have to answer what is the correct word used in the first song in the game (this silly one with dancing trees). A song, that you obviously cannot remember because it passed so much time. And you think, "so what?" - there surelly cannot be any consequences for that. Oh boy, how wrong you are! The thing is, that it's just "game over" if you can't answer correctly. All of sudden - after collecting all toads, all hidden blocks to this point you're rewarded with game over. Just because you don't remember silly song from the beginning. And nobody ever told you to memorize it! Is this the most important aspect of Origami King? Thats what it's all about - silly game about dancing trees! Didn't know that? What a **** At the beginning I thought that maybe it was just random bad decision in this particular moment of this game, or maybe they again wanted to be "that funny". But then I recalled many situations like that in this game.. Nope. This was made all on purpose. You know why? Because apparently they hired bunch of monkeys who had smoked weed while designing this game. And you paid them your hard earned money for that. Don't get me wrong. Game execution is OK - the engineers did good job. It's writers & designers who should be fired here.
Don't be stupid like me - do not buy this game. It's neither for children nor for parents. It has no purpose and playing this gives you nothing. It's like B-class movie which was supposed to be and advertiesed as B-class pastishe, but fells flat and ends up with cringe.

it's truly baffling how Intelligent Systems can clearly put so much time, care and effort into making this lovelingly crafted (and at times increadibly beautiful) paper craft world while simultanously putting so little thought into making the game actually fun and interesting.

Worthless addition to a series that should know better. I'm not mad, just disappointed.

Honestly, things would have been better off if Paper Mario died instead of the Mario and Luigi series, seeing as how the direction this game is taking is no longer appealing to the core fans of the series. Huge disappointment

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've found that most the negative review's complaints are solely based on the fact that this isn't a carbon copy of the first two games. Stuff like "No EXP, battles are useless, partners aren't literally the most in-depth creations for any game ever, etc." They are missing the point. Paper Mario is no longer an RPG series. Yes, that sucks, and I too kind of wish the series would go back to its roots, but judging this game based on its merits as an RPG is so stupid. Of course it's not very good at being an RPG, because it's not an RPG, it's an action-adventure game with some RPG elements like turn-based battles.

People who say there is no incentive to battle because there is no experience points baffled me. First of all, there's still coins, which are quite useful in this game unlike the past two, and second of all, THE BATTLES ARE FUN. I took place in most of the battles not because I needed to grind to survive the late game, but because I ENJOYED THEM. If the only incentive to battle is to make your character more powerful and not because they are fun, then I think that is a failed battle system. Origami King's battle system makes you think, and I felt super cool when I was able to do late-game battles in one turn without any help from the Toads. Maybe these battles aren't the most strategy intensive, but let's not forget, this game is not an RPG. The battles do not need to have a ton of strategy to be fun, because they can be fun and challenging in other ways. The bosses are also extremely fun, and you actually have to use strategy in them IN ADDITION TO THE RING BASED SYSTEM which I thought was extremely cool. Also I wanted to add that at first I was extremely disappointed that the Legion of Stationery, well, existed. But after the first couple I realized that they had extremely diverse and creative personalities, and their gimmicks were all centered around their real-world uses which was very fun to navigate around.

Now let's talk about things that Origami King straight up does better than the original games in my opinion. The soundtrack is one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time, which is something that even the most diehard haters of this game's new direction can't deny. Some songs are catchy, some are energetic, some are epic, some are emotional, and many are a mix of these elements. Pretty much every track in this game serves its purpose and sounds great doing so. There are so many songs that I could just listen to for hours. Honestly, the music is probably my favorite aspect of the game.

Along with this music comes some incredible looking areas. The first streamer area was probably the weakest in this department because it was admittedly a little standard. Mostly generic forest, Toad Town, generic grasslands, etc. However, every single other area is so unique and beautiful. Autumn Mountain is perhaps my favorite area in the game just because of how grand and beautiful it feels (though I might be a bit biased because the music is also incredible here). The paper aesthetic has also never looked better. It's seriously just a gorgeous game.

Now let's talk story. The overall story is quite basic, though at least had a lot more depth than SS and CS. King Olly actually felt like a threat, and while is motivations were a bit... underwhelming, to say the least, I still think he was a somewhat interesting character. I think the more interesting part of the story was not Olly, but the dynamic between him and Olivia. She was genuinely terrified to confront her brother, but I think her character growth was nice to see.

Though the main story was simple, some of the sub-plots were definitely not. The obvious example is Bobby. I cried. Ahem... moving on , I also really loved the Green Streamer area, where all of Bowser's minions rallied with you to face a common threat. It made the battle against Olly's forces seem almost like a war that affected people outside of just Mario and the occasional Toad. Also, the chase sequence at the beginning of the final area was very epic and moving in my opinion. I also really love that the game got a little dark at times. The devs got away with a lot of creepy, grotesque stuff because of the paper aesthetic, like Scissors cutting up people's bodies and attaching their disembodied faces to a monster, or Peach's body literally being folded into King Olly's castle as a decoration.

Anyway uh this review probably won't convince anyone to buy the game because it has a few spoilers so I'm hiding it, but it's a really freaking good game. I kind of got a bit ranty but I just really enjoy talking about the game. I didn't give it a perfect score because there's still a part of me that wishes for the old RPG direction, but this is a darn good alternative if you ask me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A wonderful world and charming script marred by a frustrating and lifeless battle system, Paper Mario: Origami King is a huge middle finger to fans of the franchise. While the script is tight and full of great humor, the actual gameplay is so intolerable that I jumped ship and bought Bug Fables before beating Chapter 3. Everything about the battle system is unrewarding.

The puzzles are frustrating, namely because of the looming timer, and provide no benefit beyond coins. The catch here is that you can amass 20,000 coins in a matter of minutes just by exploiting an easy wave battle in one of the very first areas. After you do that, there is literally no motivation to ever participate in an avoidable battle again since coinage is all you gain. The boss battles are almost fun but you still find yourself either taking a screenshot so you can mull over strategies or using an online guide—They’re not enjoyable enough to want to repeat so it’s either cheat or get mad and rage quit.

The “teammates” you get don’t even do anything. They randomly show up and attack in battles, often when it doesn’t even make sense. The bomb character showed up in one of my battles only to sit in the arena and sleep—which was especially confusing because (In the story) we had lost him and I was literally on my way to find him—apparently he was simultaneously stuck in a tree 2 screens down but also somehow able to join the fight? That’s pretty lazy development. The puzzle aspects are well-developed but the RPG aspects seem lazily tacked on.

Therein lies my issue with Paper Mario: Origami King—it’s a repetitive puzzle game deceitfully wearing the “Paper Mario” title. I’m sure there’s a market for this type of game but why did Nintendo force Intelligent Systems to turn one of the most beloved RPG franchises into an annoying brain teaser marathon? The last decent game in the series was Paper Jam on the 3DS. Fans have been craving the classic, turn-based RPG experience of the first 2 titles for over a decade. Some decent games have been developed but the magic of the original Paper Mario and Thousand Year Door seems to be gone forever.

Luckily you can save yourself $40 and just buy Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling which is basically Paper Mario reskinned with an insect theme—and honestly it does a great job of it. Almost nothing is innovated from the original Paper Mario games in the best way possible: all the magic and playability is still there AND it even has several ways of amping up the difficulty for people who want a challenge.

Overall verdict on Origami King: It’s a decent puzzle game but the RPG elements get in the way of the puzzles and the Puzzle Elements drain all life out of what little RPG play there is to be had. It is the worst of both worlds, which is a shame because the quips are pretty good. I recommend you just lookup the best moments on YouTube—watching someone else play Origami King is probably more satisfying than actually playing yourself.

Origami King has possibly the best soundtrack in the franchise but this is tarnished by a tedious battle system that gets old pretty fast. Items are reduced to a handful of varieties and honestly are rarely used in battle (I personally used them only once or twice but only early on).

The plot is pretty paper thin (no pun intended), and even though the ending is touching, it can’t make up

The plot is pretty paper thin (no pun intended), and even though the ending is touching, it can’t make up for a story that sadly is inferior to the traditional “bowser kidnaps peach” storyline.

Badge and gear variety is lacking and completely erases strategy from the game. Rather, victory is tied to puzzle solving, which if done successfully, allows you to finish every fight in one turn before the enemy even has a chance to take a shot at you.

On the positive side, the art style and open world blend wonderfully and make it a joy to explore.

Overall, it’s a great looking and sounding game, but I always found myself hesitant to boot it up and finish it because the battle system—the meat and potatoes of the game—feel like an empty halfhearted effort at a new design that falls flat and has me begging for a true return to the classic Paper Mario battle system that made the franchise so enjoyable.

Visually and musically the game is great, but that's all I like in it.

    There's two major issues :
First, Olivia. I just hate her so much. She's always commenting everything happening in the game and it's really annoying. She switch with the poorest jokes to the most obvious advice like : "A key ! Maybe we can use it on a door ?" when there's the **** door in front of the key. She take all the place in the game and it brings me to the second point :
Mario is brain dead. He's not reacting to anything to the point it's not a Paper Mario game but Origami Olivia. He just fight or do what Olivia tells him to.
I could also talk about Mario getting stronger only by buying weapons or finding random health bonuses, worthless coins.

To keep it simple : This game doesn't have a Paper Mario soul, it's more like a slow paced puzzle-rhythm game that make you want to play the original Paper Mario.

Honestly speaking, I had fun with the combat for probably the first 12 encounters and now dread even playing the game further after beating the 3 level boss. Is it hard? No. Is it time consuming, way more then you think. The humor and writing is great, probably the best in the Paper Mario series... but the lack of a compelling combat system, interesting hub world and just freedom in general, doesnt make up for it. This Paper Mario game feel like more of a chore then a fun experience. I regret my purchase and continue to be disappointed with the direction taken with this series. I give it a 1/10, because of how overrated I feel this game is. The 10/10s will never make Nintendo and their developers change their ways... if anything it will only encourage them to create poorly designed games Expand

Paper Mario: The Origami King arrives on Nintendo Switch with very high quality graphics, a pleasant soundtrack and a plot full of very good humor, typical of the Paper Mario series. Paper Mario deserves better. The prestige of a Final Fantasy veteran appropriating his magic onto a handicraft world deserves better. The unforgettable wit and lovable cast expanding Mario lore deserves better. And we know that Intelligent Systems can do better than committing themselves to a misguided identity crisis.
