Overcooked Special Edition on the Nintendo Switch is a fantastic slice of old school local player co-operative fun held back by the lack of a workable single-player mode and dogged by a series of annoying but not game-breaking performance issues. Packaged with both pieces of paid DLC for free, if you are a Nintendo Switch owner who will routinely have the opportunity to play with family or friends then even with the stated issues you’re in for an absolute hoot.

Overcooked is still one of the best couch co-op games, even with the troubling framerate and weird bugs on the Nintendo Switch. The game keeps the excellent and chaotic gameplay of the original versions of the game, but with the addition of new DLC with harder levels. The game needs to iron out its technical problems before I can recommend it, though.

Overcooked is a hectic party game that is great fun if you've got people to play with, but is enjoyable enough if you don't. It's a great addition to the Switch's library but it could have done with a bit more time in the kitchen to sort out its performance issues that keep me from rating this any higher. If those are fixed then its biggest issue is the painful gatekeeping of campaign levels that eventually just become padding rather than a learning aid.

An interesting idea that is lots of fun given the right crowd, but despite its best efforts to make for intriguing level design, the more bells and whistles added to the kitchen layout, the more room there is for frustration to creep in. Overcooked! Special Edition is the best value version so far, with DLC already included, and those that enjoyed it before will enjoy it again. However, just be warned that solo players should steer clear, and those wanting multiplayer fun need to make sure those in tow are not inept at juggling numerous tasks under tense conditions or else the entire group will just quickly start to hate the game and each other…

The core premise and style of Overcooked is a perfect fit for Nintendo’s portable console, but its technical performance ruins the experience. There aren’t many issues that couldn’t be fixed with a patch, but as it stands, Overcooked offers an exciting cooperative experience which is quickly hampered by performance issues.

Overcooked and the Nintendo Switch are really a perfect match of frantic co-op cooking and a games console that’s all about taking games on the go and sharing them with people. Right now it’s difficult to wholeheartedly recommend this version though, given the widely reported frame rate issues. Here’s hoping they can cook up a fix sooner rather than later.

The biggest issue is the performance. They targeted 30fps but it chugs along at 15. There are input lag issues too. I go to pick up a plate and end up repeatedly picking it up/putting it down due to input lag.

The difficulty curve is too steep. There's no time to master anything or even get used to a new gimmick before they're throwing something else at you in the next level. Maybe the input lag and performance issues messed with their ability to balance the difficulty. Seems likely.

If they fix the performance issues then this is an 8 or 9. Until then, I can't recommend it even though I really wanted to like it after looking forward to it for so long.
