A couple of patches in, this runs really nicely. A great challenge and a great co-op experience. The different worlds and recipes provide just enough variety to keep it interesting, but it doesn't get so complex that you can't bring friends in for 4-player.

This game had a lot of optimization issues at first, but now it seems it is mostly fixed. With it's biggest issue gone, the game is basically flawless, with plenty of fun with friends with competition and coop. The amount of areas to cook are great and so many of them have variety that make them unforgettable.

This is the perfect example of how couch co-op games should be made. Overcooked: Special Edition for the Switch is extremely fun and challenging when playing with friends, and somewhat enjoyable when playing alone. The HD Rumble function is perfectly executed, making the game even better.

It's a fun game. But it seems to only run at 30fps despite being a fairly simple game, graphically. The biggest issue for me though, is that there's no local multi-switch multiplayer. Which means that you have to all share the same small screen unless you have a TV nearby.

Don't buy this game until the major performance problems are patched. Game is running 23-24 fps at all times. As reviewers don't appear to be letting this address their scores I'll be giving this a big fat Zero since the devs apparently think we are imbeciles.

This is a great Switch couch co-op game. If you are not a die-hard PC 60 fps elitist, you will find the gameplay good while trying to remember that gameplay is more important than graphics. The game has a lot of replayability value and is a game to surely make you laugh.

I found it more stressful than fun. If you're looking for a casual time management game to chill out with, this is not it. If this is more your thing, then definitely look into this game, as it has great visuals and each level introduces something different.

Unless I'm missing something, there's no mode where you can just work in a normal kitchen and put food together for customers. My GF loves time management games and will play them for months if there are casual endless modes to chill out with. We have been playing co-op on this game, but she just finds Overcooked annoying and frustrating, despite us working together pretty well.

The controls for characters can be a little 'slippery'. We found occasionally we were putting food down on the wrong spot because we didn't have the angle quite right when our character was near a bench.

I have not noticed any bugs or FPS problems, so the game must have been patched. The player select screen is a bit confusing though. It has our two characters, but below each character it says "Press L+R to join game".
So you press L+R and the Switch's controller window pops up for you to manage controller settings. The game is actually referring to players 3 and 4 joining, but the visuals on the player selection screen don't make that clear, so it looks like it's asking players 1 and 2 to press L+R.

It has potential but there are some major flaws. The biggest issue is the performance. They targeted 30fps but it chugs along at 15. There are input lag issues too. I go to pick up a plate and end up repeatedly picking it up/putting it down due to input lag.

The difficulty curve is too steep. There's no time to master anything or even get used to a new gimmick before they're throwing

If they fix the performance issues then this is an 8 or 9. Until then, I can't recommend it even though I really wanted to like it after looking forward to it for so long.

Overcooked should be a perfect fit for the Switch, but the game is marred by BIG performances issues.
It can't even maintain a 30fps cap, and the more you add players, the worst the controls (2 is barely playable, 3 and 4 just awful).
Wait for a patch or play the PC version.

Me and my wife are having a blast playing it - this is second-best multiplayer game on switch just a bit behind Mario Kart 8.

And to all negative reviews - technical issues are fixed now, game is way above 0-7/10 - don't rate it for not being medicore single player game because its multiplayer game. Just as You dont rate Zelda or God of War 7/10 because they dont have multiplayer. It is what it is and it does it perfectly.

You will have to cooperate and think through your strategy several times. Should I chop the carrots and do the dishes or should we switch once in a while for a better result? Optimization is a necessary element of success in this game.
There is also a variety of obstacles along the way. Mice will steal prepared food, the oven will switch place with the sink. Each level has another interesting way of ruining your cooking. It's a lot of fun to try to reach a max score for each of them (until you reach the DLC's. They are a nightmare - seriously don't try to max them out),
Few things that stop me from giving a higher score: When the game becomes harder, the unprecise controls can be really irritating (you want to put this ingredient on the plate? Too bad it is next to the bowl of soup. Good luck making the whole dish again). Also when you reach the DLS's the game starts to be so hard it is no longer fun (an oven running away from you when your meal is starting to burn).
I haven't tried it as a party game yet, but I will do that eventually.
I have a great time playing this game.

You have to make X meals in so many minutes to beat a level, but it never tells you what X is.

The controls are not great. You're supposed to walk around picking up ingredients, slicing them up at a cutting board, putting them in a pot, and then onto a plate. Only it's very difficult to just to select the space with the ingredients, board, pot, or plate. You might find yourself throwing food onto the floor, putting it back into the pot from the plate. The timer doesn't help with this, because you're rushing around trying to get so many meals cooked.

The difficulty ramps up very quickly. You start out on a level you're supposed to lose, and by level 4, the kitchen is moving around so you can't get from the cutting board to the plate.

The game ends up being more frustrating than fun, and there's no options for easier difficulty levels. If you want a challenge to play with your game-savvy, adult friends, try this out. If you want to play with somebody who is still learning the ropes, avoid this, as you will just play the same few levels over and over, trying to win.

The main problem with Overcooked is that it gives you too little slack. If you're playing with friends and family for the laughs, you want enough time to enjoy the process–enough time to get a level wrong, laugh about it, and scramble to fix it together. Instead, Overcooked is all about not having time: if you mess up the team coordination, you're toast.

When I bought Overcooked, I expected a nice co-op game that encouraged improvised solutions and rapid changes of plan. Instead, I found an unforgiving experience where you have to shut up and do your job. The problem isn't that the game is hard. The problem is that the game is hard in a way that forces you to streamline communications and focus on finding a rythm–and that is not fun. Four or five levels in, Overcooked was feeling like work, and all my co-op groups agreed to abandon it.

Just imagine the picture: 4 men are sitting in a dark room, staring at the TV and periodically yelling “meat, cut meat”, “wash the plate”, “where is the tomato?”, “Faster, we lose the order”. This is an extremely fun game for a company that knows how to work together and has the ability to quickly adapt to the situation.

Awesome game that is way too hard!
The first few levels are the most fun you can have in a coop game, cooking with 3 of your mates in a frantic kitchen is great. But before long the ridiculous difficulty kicks in. The problem is that you have to 3-star a lot of levels to progress, and getting those 3-stars needs 4 coordinated multi-tasking geniuses.

This basically locks most of the game off from the majority of users. The infuriating part is that it's difficulty for the sake of difficulty. The difficulty doesn't add to the fun or to the sense of accomplishment after a level, all it does is lock you out. "Oh, you only got 80% of the levels on 3-start? Well, f u then, you can't unlock the next level!" Why? Why would anybody design it that way?

Overcooked Special Edition on the Nintendo Switch is a fantastic slice of old school local player co-operative fun held back by the lack of a workable single-player mode and dogged by a series of annoying but not game-breaking performance issues. Packaged with both pieces of paid DLC for free, if you are a Nintendo Switch owner who will routinely have the opportunity to play with family or friends then even with the stated issues you’re in for an absolute hoot.

Overcooked is a hectic party game that is great fun if you've got people to play with, but is enjoyable enough if you don't. It's a great addition to the Switch's library but it could have done with a bit more time in the kitchen to sort out its performance issues that keep me from rating this any higher. If those are fixed then its biggest issue is the painful gatekeeping of campaign levels that eventually just become padding rather than a learning aid.
