And now, I can see why so many people love this game, and why it's endured for just over a decade, because it is an absolutely gorgeous looking game.

I've noticed that most reviews for this game focus almost entirely on the artstyle, and there's a reason why, because it's beautiful. Other reviews also mention the music, which again, is gorgeous, and the humorous characters. But I am somewhat disappointed with the actual gameplay itself. The combat is a chore. It amounts to mashing Y and then using the paintbrush to draw a line through the enemy when they're down to defeat them. And the text portions of the game are egregiously drawn out (no pun intended). The dialogue stretches on for an eternity, as do gameplay explanations. There was one point where a character was explaining a new combat technique, and I timed how long it took to get through their explanation, and it literally took 52 seconds for them to explain "mash Y four times." I'm not joking. 52 full seconds of text, just to explain how to push the Y button four times. It was ridiculous. And the game over explains literally everything like this. The handholding is unbelievable. And then, there are frequent points in the game where you simply have no clue where you're supposed to go next or what you're supposed to do. So the game simultaneously holds your hand to never ending extents, while also frequently dropping you off into the middle of a field with no clue as to what you're supposed to be doing.

While I did find those things incredibly frustrating, I still loved this game due to its gorgeous looking art style and its quirky, humorous characters. I just wish there wasn't so much wandering with no sense of the direction you're supposed to be headed in, and that the dialogue didn't drag on forever to explain incredibly simple things.

Okami reminds us that video games are an art, and not because they are a product of excellent quality, but because they are an avant-garde proposal, something completely different from what we are used to seeing, a visual and sound show worthy of a AAA, which will keep us on our toes throughout the adventure. Highly recommended for lovers of Japanese culture and art.

Amazingly flawed game design! The graphic style is beautiful, the characters funny, but god damn does this not deserve all the praise it gets, be warned. Expand

The average: the second half of the story drags on a bit, bosses and enemies don’t provide a lot in terms of challenge, puzzle solutions are, for the most part, straight up given to you, Issun’s “love for the ladies” gets old fast, brush moves MOSTLY work, but can at times just refuse to read your inputs (especially with the “whirlwind” tech, which I have never managed to get to work and really shouldn’t be that hard).

The bad: combat is repetitive, bosses are straight up recycled in the late game (especially Orochi who you fight three times in the exact same way), game script is verbose, taking minutes to say something that would take seconds.

So, yeah. It’s alright. Worth a play. But I’ve played better.

The main selling point is the stunning visuals. The story is engrossing and the game.mechanics are fantastic, for the most part. The monster battles tend to get repetitive after a while. This game isn’t as inventive as Mario Odyssey, but it comes close.

Lo mejor del juego es su estilo artístico y sus personajes y historia.

The gameplay style is a mix of action, platform, and puzzle gaming genres, and has been noted by many reviewers to have numerous similarities in overall gameplay style to The Legend of Zelda series,[3] an inspiration that director Hideki Kamiya, a self-proclaimed Zelda fan, has admitted has influenced his general game design.[4] The main story is primarily linear, directed by Amaterasu's guide Issun, though numerous side quests and optional activities allow for players to explore the game world and take the story at their own pace.[5] By completing quests, side quests and small additional activities (such as making trees bloom into life or feeding wild animals), Amaterasu earns Praise, which can then be spent to increase various statistics of the character, such as the amount of health and number of ink wells for Celestial Brush techniques.[6]

Combat is staged in a ghostly virtual arena, and Amaterasu can fight enemies using a combination of weapons, fighting techniques and Brush methods to dispatch the foes.[7] At the end of combat, money (as yen) is rewarded to Amaterasu, with bonuses for completing a battle quickly and without taking damage. The money can be spent on numerous items from merchants across the land, including healing goods, better weapons, tools and key items for completing quests. The money can also be used to buy new combat techniques at dojos throughout the land.[8]

Additionally, rare Demon Fangs can be earned through combat which can be traded for additional, unique items that are beneficial in gameplay but not required to complete the game.[9] Weapons inspired by the Imperial Regalia of Japan (the Reflector, the Rosaries and the Glaive) can be equipped on Amaterasu as either main or sub-weapons (one each), and used in addition to other melee attacks that the player can have Amaterasu learn through the course of the game.[10][11]

At first the little character Issun is annoying, talking too much and giving the solution to all puzzles. I think it was necessary when the game was released on Wii, but on Switch with the Tough screen the controls are way smoother so Issun is a pain in the ass. but gradually he participates more to the story and less to the puzzles so the challenge gets more interesting.

I actually thought the game gets better and better the more I progressed. I enjoyed the story all along the game as it does not repeat itself. It was surprisingly original till the end. Besides I lived 10 years in Japanese and I am almost fluent. The whole atmosphere is very authentic to Japan, but not a remake of what People think of Japan.

The controls are smooth, the speed appropriate. It's not a difficult game (which did not bother me too much) but challenging enough.

Overall, I loved this game, I highly recommend it even in 2019, despite the dialogues with texts are outdated. The graphics are still beautiful. I would love the developers to make a sequel.

Much to my surprise this claim was not unfounded, and this game provided one of my most enjoyable gaming experiences on the PS2, and I find it to be kind of funny that playing it on a Nintendo system today it feels more like Zelda than the latest release (LZBOTW, not the LZLA remaster). Best part of this situation is how this game has aged, the graphics have ages surprisingly well, the crazy world of Nippon is still unbelievably entertaining with each character as unique and interesting as the next, the combat is still entertaining with you getting creative and utilizing your brush abilities in sync with hack and slash mechanics, and the music is as wonderful as ever. This is still a masterpiece to me but unfortunately I have one complaint, a lack of voice acting. While in 2006 they would have probably brought this game down with sub-par voic acting, the decision to use incoherent mumbles to represent character voices is the only part of this game that hasn't aged well for me. Highly recommend this for any player old or young. Expand

This game is insanely beautiful, probably the prettiest game I have ever seen. The entire game is a living painting. The colours are so rich and it looks incredible on the OLED screen of the Nintendo Switch. The music is quite good but nothing more than that. Fits well with the game and Japanese theme. The story was okay, it was somewhat entertaining but not more than that. It was quite long actually, felt like it was dragging. I’d say the game could’ve been shortened a bit. There was a mega load of text dialogues, way too much in my opinion. It took me a while to beat that game because I often didn’t feel like getting back into the game. Could be just me but I wasn’t eager to return to the world of Okami unfortunately. On the other hand, once I was back into it, I was really enjoying myself quite a bit and it was hard to stop. So it’s kind of a weird feeling that I had, not wanting to play but then really enjoying playing…

The combat was quite unique and surprisingly quite good. Once I got multiple brush techniques it became very versatile and fun to use. There was a good variety of weapons to use and different ways to combine them. You can use a primary and sub weapon. Every weapon can be in the primary position or the sub. That same weapon will be used in a totally different way depending on the position it is equipped. That part was well done. The enemies… Wow! the enemies, their design is like nothing I have ever seen before, so creative it’s totally crazy, you have to see it to believe it. Almost every time a new enemy appeared I was like, what the hell is that thing? And where’s the front? Same goes for the bosses, my god those were cool. I disliked the 3D platforming, it felt too floaty and imprecise. It got me frustrated on multiple occasions. The dungeons and puzzles were so diversified. That game excelled at keeping environments, puzzles, enemies and abilities new and fresh. The developers had some great ideas.

It was a relatively easy game, I died 0 times but it was somewhat difficult at times don’t get me wrong. Frame rate was solid at 30fps. Playtime: 33h46min

Sometimes, the hint or guide inside this game is a little confusing or even misleading, and I would get frustrated when wasting over 30 minutes to solve an easy puzzle. For instance, in one puzzle, you have to draw a power slash instead of hitting the object with your head attack. After defeating Orochi for the first time, you have to try to leave the village 3 times until you can actual leave it; I have wasted over an hour trying to escape the festival and the village. etc... DNF after ~5 hours of play. The graphics feel dated and the controls are annoyingly loose. It's a cool concept, but so much relies on the art style and I don't think it holds up.

Okami has a beautiful visual style, but you can tell it's an HD remaster of an older game. It plays like a Legend Of Zelda game with a main-quest and plenty of side-quests that are sometimes silly. I think the highlight for me was the music. I loved the Kabuki-style melodies and sound effects.

This game is alright but not captivating enough for me to finish. I got bored after 4 hours of play and quitted.

Absolutely fantastic. Designs, musics, gameplay, atmosphere, lore, world-building... Absolutely gorgeous. Not perfect, too much repetitivity in the boss fights and the end seems rushed a little bit. But it's still one of the best games ever made.

I was disappointed. The graphics, control function, storyline and some of the puzzles are fine, but that's the only positive thing I can say. There’s an incredible amount of annoying textreading. There’s absolutely nothing challenging in the game which makes it very boring. I was nowhere near dying at any point. For me it was like playing a bad Zelda-copy.

I'll update my review if I want to mention or change anything. Okami is better than The Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess. The best way to play Okami on Nintendo Switch is Portable mode using the touch screen. The various Tv mode control schemes are unplayable to me. Streamers should play Okami. One of the Best versions of this game is the Wii version.

A beautiful game that goes hard on the art style. It looks stunning in the switch.

This game is a masterpiece and it needs a sequel. I know Okamiden exists, I would settle for an HD port of that with proper controls, but please bring this franchise back!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my favorite game of all time. Likable characters, fun combat, The Celestial Brush was fun to play around with, and it was overall a fun experience playing. The game can be really difficult as well when going for Devil Gate trials and greater completion. Even though this game is my favorite, I admit it isn’t perfect. Getting all of the stray beads, while optional, had some that there was no way of finding. Tell me how I was supposed know that I can slice a rock to find the thief of Sei-An City, because you literally can’t (His chase minigame was fun though). Also when getting the beads, there is the world's supply of backtracking. You literally need to beat Lechku and Nechku to get one in SHINSHU FIELD. Overall, this game is amazing, I love it with all my heart. Truly an amazing experience. Expand

This Switch release is a highpoint, as it merges multiple different methods of control into one version, and can be played anywhere at any time. Ōkami is one of the highest expressions of a video game as art, further blurring the lines between the two. It’s not just a delightful game, it’s also a historically important one, and everyone owes it to themselves to experience Ōkami, either again or for the first time.

I can’t say that Okami will make it into my all-time favorites, but it’s memorable nonetheless. Exploring Nippon and meeting all of its goofy, painted inhabitants makes up for the repetition of combat, but it’s a shame that it didn’t quit while it was ahead — the excessive length and repetitive combat only served to dampen the things it got right.
