Okami was a masterpiece of game design when it was first released, it was a masterpiece in its various remasters and it remains a gaming masterpiece in this edition for the PS4.

This HD remake brings all the beauty and fun of the original to several new platforms, and while there are a few issues (such as the camera and the annoying voices), the strength of the overall package makes it easier to ignore them in favor of all the things the game does right. Whether you're a fan of the original PS2 version or someone who has never played the game before, ÅŒkami HD is absolutely worth adding to your library.

On one hand Okami HD is still a brilliant game that any gamer must beat, but on the other hand it hasn't much evolved from the PS3 version that came out 5 years ago. Like with many remasters, go for it if you haven't played it, skip it if you already have.

Okami is a great adventure set in Japanese folklore, which shows an amazing ukiyo-e graphic style and feels unique in its brush gameplay. 4K resolution for PS4 PRO and Xbox One X is great, but we still miss 60 FPS option.

Even though there aren’t too many new features to justice this re-release, Ammy’s quest to defeat Orochi and cleanse the world of corruption is still every bit as compelling as it was a decade ago, and to those unfamiliar, this is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the most adorable wolf goddess you’ve never heard of. So how about that sequel, eh, Capcom?

Although the new remastered does not stand out for audacity, Okami remains a masterpiece of stainless beauty.

There’s a lot of content in Okami HD. Unfortunately, interacting with the wealth of characters, locations, and collectibles becomes more of a chore when the story and action is so repetitive. Despite the different coat of paint, each new encounter felt like the last. The colors began to fade around the halfway point, and the game just kept painting without adding anything new to the page.

Dissatisfied with the poormakes games like this anymore, taking wild risks while at it. The gamble didn’t pay off with the original release. Dissatisfied with the poor sales, Capcom decided to stall Clover Studio and merge it with in-house teams. The key personnel escaped the merger and went on to form PlatinumGames. As they say, the rest is history. Now that 2017 saw Japanese games taking back the respect they deserve, I hope Ōkami HD too will find its audience. After all these years after the original game’s release, I have no qualms in awarding Ōkami HD a perfect score. If only I had given it a chance back then Expand

The gameplay style is a mix of action, platform, and puzzle gaming genres, and has been noted by many reviewers to have numerous similarities in overall gameplay style to The Legend of Zelda series,[3] an inspiration that director Hideki Kamiya, a self-proclaimed Zelda fan, has admitted has influenced his general game design.[4] The main story is primarily linear, directed by Amaterasu's guide Issun, though numerous side quests and optional activities allow for players to explore the game world and take the story at their own pace.[5] By completing quests, side quests and small additional activities (such as making trees bloom into life or feeding wild animals), Amaterasu earns Praise, which can then be spent to increase various statistics of the character, such as the amount of health and number of ink wells for Celestial Brush techniques.[6]

Combat is staged in a ghostly virtual arena, and Amaterasu can fight enemies using a combination of weapons, fighting techniques and Brush methods to dispatch the foes.[7] At the end of combat, money (as yen) is rewarded to Amaterasu, with bonuses for completing a battle quickly and without taking damage. The money can be spent on numerous items from merchants across the land, including healing goods, better weapons, tools and key items for completing quests. The money can also be used to buy new combat techniques at dojos throughout the land.[8]

Additionally, rare Demon Fangs can be earned through combat which can be traded for additional, unique items that are beneficial in gameplay but not required to complete the game.[9] Weapons inspired by the Imperial Regalia of Japan (the Reflector, the Rosaries and the Glaive) can be equipped on Amaterasu as either main or sub-weapons (one each), and used in addition to other melee attacks that the player can have Amaterasu learn through the course of the game.[10][11]

I'm having the best time playing this gorgeous, evolving adventure.

Overwhelmingly impressed by the pacing of the gameplay, the unpredictable puzzles, the meditative art direction, the lovely soundtrack and the mixture of traditional mythology/cheeky self awareness. It's such gamer's game, with great attention to the progression. Also, finally a game I can play in front of my children!

Oh god I really wanted to love this game. It has no punch. You never have any risk of dying, money is meaningless, and everywhere you walkOh god I really wanted to love this game. It has no punch. You never have any risk of dying, money is meaningless, and everywhere you walk feels like a MOBA. This is because of the way your character moves, and so everything is just wide ramps and plateaus, which is super boring and uninspired, it doesn't matter if your character and the trees look gorgeous. This game drags so much, and should never be compared to Zelda, this game literally tells you how to solve each puzzle before you even have a chance of trying yourself! It's just busywork! Amazingly flawed game design! The graphic style is beautiful, the characters funny, but god damn does this not deserve all the praise it gets, be warned. Expand
