What a Christmas gift ____ this beautiful ( aJapanese watercolor in motion) , charming, Zelda-like
adventure is a stellar experience. Souls games are my personal favorite, but I must say that it's
refreshing to play something this positive and inspiring with my 9 year old. I wish more games resonated this memorably.

Okami is one of those rare games that comes around that instantly takes a special place in my heart. It's up there with the best of them in my top games ever. The game is criminally overlooked and deserves all the acclaim it gets.

The game's art style is the obvious selling point, but certainly not its only draw. Everything, from the game's art style of Japanese brushwork to the music, to the characters, to the open world is beautifully presented and directed, to a degree worthy of applause.

Unfortunately, most people focus only on the beautiful art style, failing to inform people about what actually makes up the game. The game is a Zelda-like open world adventure, with exploration and combat being the things you do. The multiple locales provide lovely scenery and things to discover, even if the layouts of each area and dungeon are pretty linear, with only the small side room with hidden goodies breaking it up. However, despite that the game never comes off as stale or repeating itself, which can be handed over to the absolute myriad of abilities you get during the entire runtime of the game.

The primary power of your character, the great Japanese deity Amaterasu, is the ability to paint. Painting is the primary currency of this world, and is used to do just about everything, from slicing your foes in half, to making the wind blow, to restoring broken bridges and rappelling yourself onto floating flowers. There are 13 such techniques in the game to find, and they all have a unique purpose with strengths and weaknesses, and they really do make you wonder what else you can get. Each power feels unique in its application and function, and you end up using them whenever you think they could come in handy instead of in strictly scripted events, with the exception of some boss fights, but even that is disregarded near the end when you'll end up fluidly and effortlessly using all of your powers as if they were second nature, taking in the environment, learning your enemy's weakness and using whatever you got on hand whenever you feel the time is right, opening the way up for some truly dynamic gameplay.

The world building itself is also quite stellar, with the lore nicely played out over three distinct arcs, featuring a plethora of locations to explore and people to meet. The characters in this game are nothing short of amazing, and I failed to find a single one that wasn't memorable in some way, to the proud, to the reckless, to the eccentric; every single character is unique in their own way and has something to contribute to the world and your experience. Talking to people in Okami doesn't feel like a chore of just talking to people to make the story go forward and then never talking to them again. Some characters, even those that don't have anything to do with the story at all, you can find yourself becoming invested in, and most characters do have some kind of sidequest associated with them which can lead you into all sorts of adventures off of the main story. Amaterasu herself is an amazingly deep character, short on words but has charm and character in spades, her reactions and emotions through the story clearly portrayed in a way that makes you feel invested in her story. The game is one of the most charming I have ever played with both its art style and the way it treats its world and its characters.

If there's one complaint I could level on Okami, it's that the game may at times feel like a sort of "monster of the week" thing, where once you beat the boss that's causing all the terror in the world, another one will immediately take its place, and this is how it goes for all three of the game's acts. It can become a little predictable once you realize that, and subsequently the game can sometimes come up with some contrivances in order to advance the plot, though none of it is so ludicrous that it'll take you out of the experience while the amazing characters and beautiful scenery keep you held down. In fact, I found myself becoming more invested as the story went on, wondering what was really going on and what new characters and locations I'd come across, or what new opponents I'd have to face to get to where I need to go.

By the final boss of the game, I was hooked, nailed and riveted to the metaphorical edge of my seat, and at the credits I almost broke out into tears with how amazing the entire experience was, looking back on it from where I'd started, all the way to how I ended, remembering the people I'd met, the places I'd explored, the enemies I'd faced and indeed the world I'd saved.

This game deserves to be played more, and I'm recommending it to anyone with a PS4. You may not like it quite as much as I did, but you have to at least give it a try to see what all the fuss is about. In my opinion, the acclaim is more than well deserved.

Overwhelmingly impressed by the pacing of the gameplay, the unpredictable puzzles, the meditative art direction, the lovely soundtrack and the mixture of traditional mythology/cheeky self awareness. The game isn't bad, on the contrary it is certainly a fine Zelda-style game with a wonderful setting and style it just feels a little shallow and doesn't have the nostalgia factor of a Zelda universe to boost it's appeal.

My overall score will probably shock people, but… Overall points:
PRO - One of the most creatively visually beautiful games I’ve ever played
PRO - The brush mechanic is truly unique and very interesting in game play
PRO - The connection of characters to Japanese mythology is really interestingly intertwined
CON - The. text. just. moves. so. so. so. slow. oh. my. god. it. is. so. slow. you. can. not. skip. text. in. this. game.
CON - Your sidekick is a misogynistic little **** that will not shut up at all, let alone about rating, insulting, threatening, catcalling, mansplaining, sexualizing, or assaulting women. Every. Single. Woman. It’s goddamn exhausting. Who the **** wrote this script and thought this was a good inclusion into the characters or plot line?
CON - For all the creativity of the brush stroke mechanics, half of the strokes are essentially a circle, and it constantly confuses them and does the wrong spell, and it’s really frustrating
CON - The game forces you to do a bunch of inane things like crossing out names on lists, and if it’s not perfect, traps you forever doing the same inane thing.
CON - GLOWING BOOBS. I’m not kidding. Literally glowing, exploding boobs.

Gameplay: Really mixed bag. Very creative, with the battle mechanics reasonably similar to any zelda-like game out there. However, like everything else in this game, the camera is s. l. o. w. You take forever to pan 360. So god forbid an enemy is behind you, you’ll take a bunch of hits before you can turn around to figure out where they are. Contrast that with a very creative brush mechanic and a bunch of other creative things, and I balanced out at a 5. However, I never want to play this game again, just from the non. stop. text. that. just. won’t. skip. oh. my. god. So much of this game feels like being shackled to some artistic vision that didn’t care about user experience at all, even though the changes necessary to make it truly a wonderful gameplay experience would have been really, truly tiny. Just let people skip damn text, don’t make them do stupid things over and over, and make all the strokes different so they don’t get confused.

Creativity: Super-creative inclusion of mythologies into the world, and making everything fit a grand artistic vision that’s basically unparalleled. A lot of cute things to do, in zelda-like fashion, but in ways and using means not in other games.

Music: Nothing to write home about but pretty decent. A few of them were a little grating, but overall they fit the themes and were enjoyable.

Visuals: Again, unparalleled. With a point taken off for sexualization because goddamn. Glowing boobs. Are you serious I swear the creative team, while brilliant, was run by a horny 13 year old boy. Shame on them for so many unforgivable tropes.

Characters: Your main character has none. Your sidekick is grating as ****ing hell. Most of the men trying to help you are either needlessly vague and “I have to do this for plot reasons” frustrating, or completely and aggravatingly useless. And the women are completely trite. Princess to be saved. Sacrifice for the good of the main character. Sex object. Evil temptress traitor. Repeat. I didn’t like a single character in it other than Ammy, and sadly she just doesn’t shine. If Issun didn’t exist at all and the entire thing was silent with no speech, that would have been much better.

Plotline: Very creative interweaving of myths. It goes in somewhat predictable directions sometimes, but always using a new bit of something from a mythology you might not guess. A point off for reusing bosses to much though. You refight several of them several times. This isn’t MegaMan - make more bosses.

Emotionality: I really didn’t feel for almost any characters in this game. Nothing that happened to anyone really affected me in any way. Maybe Kaguya.

Replayability: You can restart with all your heart containers and ink containers. And if you happened to find all 99 beads in the previous game, also basically invincibility and one-shot-killing for the whole game. But I wouldn’t be able to stand being shackled to the slow text for a minute longer.

Difficulty: There’s no slider, so you can’t adjust. The difficulty curve is weird. Some sections are super-easy, some are somewhat hard but never impossible. Except for a couple things here and there that are just plain random. Annoyingly random. The mini-games in particular are incredibly wide-ranging in frustration. Some are fun, but I’d say 2/3 are RNG-hell and you’ll beat your controller into the ground for a half hour for each of them because it didn’t recognize a brush stroke 10 times in a row, or it asks you to do something really random that you can’t memorize in time, etc.

gameplay: the combat is not very deep in terms of mechanics, it is almost a puzzle involving the weaknesses of the enemies and the brush skills you have. Most encounters can be resolved in less than 10 seconds and bosses are more of a puzzle challenge than a technical one. The dungeons follow a classic style similar to zelda focused on items and puzzle as well.

art: another perfect point of the game, the design of characters, scenery, monsters, everything is inspired by traditional Japanese art made with brushes, it is something very unique that you will not find anywhere else.

The gameplay style is a mix of action, platform, and puzzle gaming genres, and has been noted by many reviewers to have numerous similarities in overall gameplay style to The Legend of Zelda series,[3] an inspiration that director Hideki Kamiya, a self-proclaimed Zelda fan, has admitted has influenced his general game design.[4] The main story is primarily linear, directed by Amaterasu's guide Issun, though numerous side quests and optional activities allow for players to explore the game world and take the story at their own pace.[5] By completing quests, side quests and small additional activities (such as making trees bloom into life or feeding wild animals), Amaterasu earns Praise, which can then be spent to increase various statistics of the character, such as the amount of health and number of ink wells for Celestial Brush techniques.[6]

Combat is staged in a ghostly virtual arena, and Amaterasu can fight enemies using a combination of weapons, fighting techniques and Brush methods to dispatch the foes.[7] At the end of combat, money (as yen) is rewarded to Amaterasu, with bonuses for completing a battle quickly and without taking damage. The money can be spent on numerous items from merchants across the land, including healing goods, better weapons, tools and key items for completing quests. The money can also be used to buy new combat techniques at dojos throughout the land.[8]

Additionally, rare Demon Fangs can be earned through combat which can be traded for additional, unique items that are beneficial in gameplay but not required to complete the game.[9] Weapons inspired by the Imperial Regalia of Japan (the Reflector, the Rosaries and the Glaive) can be equipped on Amaterasu as either main or sub-weapons (one each), and used in addition to other melee attacks that the player can have Amaterasu learn through the course of the game.[10][11]

Here is a game that deserves a review, and I`ll try to be comprehensive in all aspects and convince you that this is one of the most beautiful and lovable games I ever played (keep in mind that I am a 30 years old gamer that played hundreds and hundreds of games in all platforms since the NES). Here is a game that deserves a review, and I`ll try to be comprehensive in all aspects and convince you that this is one of the most beautiful and lovable games I ever played (keep in mind that I am a 30 years old gamer that played hundreds and hundreds of games in all platforms since the NES). Take your time to read.

First what you may not like:
    - There is no in-game voice acting. You have sounds but they are generic and everything is in written dialog, like in old RPGs.

The neutral must be said, so people understand.
    - This is a linear game, don`t expect the open world. I just say this, because, for some people, this might be important.
    - The soundtrack is good, but it is not super awesome. You will enjoy, but you will not remember.

That's it, now for the good:

    - Graphics. This game is a gem in terms of artwork. I am really into artwork and this draws from the best Japanese artworks I ever saw. The whole game stands unique in its artwork, there is nothing like Okami out there. Seriously, the art style is unique, just put Okami in Google Images and see for yourself. It is beautiful and you will be mesmerized by the sheer amount of care, creativity, and style that this game offer. Each environment has its own designs and stands out from its own. Okami is not like some new games that recycle environmental aspects. Every. Single. Place. Is. Unique.

    - Story and Characters: They are lovable. Okami is a light game in terms of story. You will get the standard Fight Against the Darkness from Japanese Mythology here, but, unlike everything that is out there, it is done with elegant and funny jokes, impeccable atmosphere and ridiculously charismatic characters. Amaterasu (the white wolf protagonist) never talks, but you will love Amy more and more as the game goes. The story grows on you, because although its simples, it is interesting and has elements that make you get attached to what is going on, and how Amaterasu will stop the villain. As Amy go around getting new abilities the game opens more and more, including old areas, and the story goes deeper.

    - Gameplay: Here is the one major aspect that separates Okami from every other game I ever played. You have a unique power in this game called Celestial Brush, and with it, you can literally make specific drawings on the screen that activate Amaterasu`s abilities. Here is the deal: this changes everything and makes the game experience perfect, fun, addictive and challenging. Don't be fooled, although light in the story, Okami is is still a challenging game. Not that difficult, but not easy either, you have to pay attention and be fast thinking in numerous encounters to succeed. Using all abilities of the Celestial Brush is perfect and makes Okami unique on its own. You make the drawings yourself, so you get fully immersed in this game. You will use it to change the environment, attack and defend. You and Amaterasu are a team basically, so its perfect.

    - Quests and Combat: They are simple, but done right. The good part of side quests and exploring is that you truly have to pay attention. There is a lot of hidden content and artifacts all around, and you have to use your mind to understand how to get them. It is not as straightforward as it seems. So, it is good. But the Combat is what shines the best. Boss Fights are fun, challenging and creative. And fighting mobs can be challenging sometimes, making you have to use a lot of Amaterasu different abilities to pull through.

Please, don`t miss this game. It is a jewel in all it has to offer. In the game is so unique it is hard to describe. It is an experience every gamer has to try on their gamer life because it serves both the casual and the most experienced gamer.

Ookami is a very cute game.
This game is a welcome game for pet owners.
Because the sun god of Japan becomes a wolf and goes on an adventure. He also has a good sense of action and hitting. And to the extent that it is the origin of Zelda's legend, the adventure method is much more than Zelda's legend. I don't know why this game doesn't have 100 Metascore points. I also liked the

Have to say played this on the switch and it is enjoyable fun and everything a game should be. The story is exciting, the characters larger than life, and the location bursting with spectacular colors. Love the art choice feels like playing an oil painting in motion. Highly recommend this game well not disappoint.

Absolutely fantastic. Designs, musics, gameplay, atmosphere, lore, world-building... Absolutely gorgeous. Not perfect, too much repetitivity in the boss fights and the end seems rushed a little bit. But it's still one of the best games ever made.

I don't know how it's possible, but this game is still masterpiece material, after all these years! It just proves how ahead of it's time it was back in 2008 on PS2.

Okami aged gracefully. Even though its age shows here and there both in design and execution it still is a bold and unique game. [02/2018, p.36]

Okami is a truly beautiful game and it's in its best possible form with this absolutely stunning 4K remaster. Okami HD is something truly special; the sort of game that is still remembered fondly years later by those who play it, and wonderful in every aspect. While remasters often get a bad rap, classics like this deserve the chance to get more sales - especially if it increases the chance of a sequel - not to mention more players get to experience an amazing and memorable adventure. Combine this quality with the low asking price here and this is a no-brainer. Buy this game. Love this game.

Another reanimated legend and one of the most beautiful and stylish games ever made for PlayStation. That's why you will forgive it its camera view and the squeaky conversations. [Issue#282]
