Honestly, Octopath Traveler is MY favorite release of 2018.
I've spent 59 hours on it, and MAN is it addicting!
I give it a 10/10 for the Soundtrack, Art, Gameplay, Story, Everything!

Great mix of old-school pixel art and modern special visual effects.
As expected for a Japanese RPG, lots of grinding, but the new combat system compensates nicely.

Pros: Nintendo 2D graphics are awesome, battle mechanics, the menus to navigate through the map, weapons, and skills are easy and simplistic to understand and learn.

Cons: The stories are so bad. I can't tell you how annoying it is to hear H'annit and her "old English". It's painful to get through some of these stories. As I got to everyone's 4th chapter I was so uninterested in everyone's stories that I skipped the prologues and went straight to the battles. Not every game is perfect, but this really REALLY brings what could be a great game to just an OK game.

This game is not only the reincarnation of all the best things that 16-Bit RPG heavens had to offer but an ETERNAL MASTERPIECE of the video games industry. Anyone alive should play that game as story, graphics, sound and gameplay mechanics are all flawless and so close to perfection, hardly seen in any game! Thank you team Octopath :)

I don't like JRPG normally, they tend to stretch out and the format I just don't like. And I hate retro games in 8/16 bit style. I didn't like Persona 5 or Shovel Knight for instance. But this... Wish more games could do that. To me this is a 10/10 so far, and I hope other game developers take after these guys. If you're hesitant since you're normally not into JRPG, I'd say this one is by far your best bet. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The class system probably is the only gem in this game. Most of the characters are poorly written.
Not to mention something JRPG loves to do and never bothers to improve, insufferable grinding.
And this vial of poison ruins the whole experience a good game could offer.

Favourite Switch game of 2018 so far! Amazing for anyone who has enjoyed the classic Square JRPGs like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6. Music is godlike and worth the price of the game alone. I played 90 hours in my first play through. Can’t recommend this enough!

Story- 8 characters in this game that have their own self-contained story. For the stories themselves, some are pretty interesting like Cyrus or Therion, while others like Primrose, Olberic and Alfyn are pretty average, "safe" stories. Now though the characters themselves dont really come together, what I really like is how the lore that centers around in each of the stories, help give a much bigger world and connects the stories themselves more than the characters. There's also a secret 9th path, well if u could call it that, that does bring the lore and the 8 paths together a good bit. (Reason for why the 8 character's stories happened and indirectly involved with each other) But on how to find the secret path you will have to find yourself.
    >Graphics- Its what the devs called "2D-HD" which honestly does look great. The pixel art is gorgeous, the 3D models are simple yet effective. The pixel textures do kind of repeat, which honestly is great for nostalgic purposes of the limited memory of 16bit games. Some of the techniques they use in the game is pretty advanced like Bokeh DoF, complex specular maps, water is beautifully animated and have their own reflections, all objects that im aware of interact with the light, the character sprites themselves hav their own real time shadows that interact with light also, the small cloud shadows that move across the scene, alpha effects are pretty high res, etc. All give this game such beauty, it almost gives a sense of it being a living diorama. 720p 30fps Docked and 576p 30fps Handheld, which is understandable tbh with the techniques it uses. Its kinda hard to see the lower res which is great tbh.
    >Music- The music is gorgeous and blends pretty well to feel like a background that honestly makes me feel immersed in the world. It also contains 3 different Battle themes, so you wont grow tired of hearing the same theme throughout the game, like other games do. Some of my favorite themes are from the Woodlands and Frostlands
    >Gameplay- Whichever character you start out with has the combat start out pretty simple with BP (that feels just like Brave in Bravely Default), where you can stack and use these points that can make you hit the enemy multiple times, boost how much health you can heal, boost magic damage or increase how many turns you have a status buff. As you level up and collect other party members, the game auto scales its level requirements in each of the areas for you to traverse in for combat. As you defeat each enemy encounter you get Jp (job points) which you can stock up. You start out with a base job that pertains to the character and these Jp can be used to unlock more skills that pertains to your job. (each unlock will increase the amount of Jp you need for next unlock; 50, 100, 500, etc.) As you unlock more skills of your job, you unlock Support skills which can be used in combination with any other support skill unlocks from other 2ndary jobs. (can equip up to 4) There's a total of 12 jobs in this game, 8 of them are the ones that pertain to each character (Dancer, Apothecary, Warrior, Merchant, Scholar, Thief, Hunter and Cleric) but their are also 4 secret jobs that are technically like a fusion between 2 jobs in the pool of 8. They can only be obtained by going through their dungeons which require to be very high level'd. (Starseer, Runelord, Warmaster, Sorcerer) Unlike obtaining the other 8 jobs by simply finding their cave, and walk up to it and grab it. Game requires deep strategy the farther you get in. When to correctly time your use of BP and amount, which characters to give ur BP, who to buff, etc. The game constantly keeps you engaged. I've had a few team wipes caused by one **** up in my choices. The game is very grindy also. Their are also Path Actions that are unique to each character....well technically 4 different ones where each one is shared between 2 characters with small variations.(Purchase/Steal, Challenge/Provoke, Scrutinize/Inquire, Allure/Guide) These do have some relevance in need to be used for the stories.
    >>In conclusion, this is a beautiful game with great music and gameplay. I haven't played many classic 16bit JRPGs but this is definitely a game I do recommend to people who love nostalgia, a good challenge or just like playing retro games. (and also dont mind the grind it requires, or a more or less average overall story)
    >>Rating: 8.7/10
Update: Beaten the True Final Boss in Octopath. It was a 2 phase fight and made u use all 8 of ur party members. But man its one of those games where the Final boss actually requires skill/strategy to defeat instead of just grinding away in levels. (levels only give increment boost) Now THIS is wht a Final Boss/Super Boss shuld b like. Very few Jrpgs actually make it a challenge nowadays tht require skill.

I’ve never seen anything like it’s “HD-2D” graphics and I personally find them gorgeous, and the music is both excellent and hits the proper mood for the moment it’s played spot-on.

As someone that has gotten easily bored with traditional turn-based RPG battle systems in the past, I find the combat very entertaining and I have yet to get bored of it. I find the job system very clever and I love being able to design and create a party unique from everyone else that’s played the game.

I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about the story, and while it certainly isn’t anything groundbreaking, I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as people make it out to be. I’m personally invested in finding out what happens in each story and I’d call that successful.

Yes, the lack of an overarching plot or any substantial connection between the characters is a little jarring, but I think it was intentional - they wanted to create eight different stories and eight protagonists of equal importance, and I think that they pulled off that balance flawlessly, even if the stories weren’t extremely inspired. While some more character interaction would have been great, I think Square Enix was trying something different, and I applaud the attempt. One thing I liked about the stories is that each one seems to have a different tone - some are lighthearted, some are darker, and some have a real sense of danger and urgency. Even if the stories are a bit cliché at times, they don’t feel monotonous (at least to me).

As far as the few hiccups go - the out-of-combat “Path Actions” were an interesting idea, but honestly they fell a little flat for me. They aren’t tedious, but I don’t find them all that interesting personally. The side quests are a little confusing and almost feel like an afterthought, and I really have no desire to pursue them.

I have hit a few spots where I’ve needed to do some heavy grinding, but overall it hasn’t been horrible. Some of the bosses seem to be a bit stronger than their challenge ratings suggest, and those bosses are frustrating; but most are just challenging, and that’s exactly what I was looking for.

Overall, I definitely recommend picking this game up and giving it a try. I think almost everyone will be able to find something to love about it, whether it be the graphics, the music, the gameplay, or the stories.

Octopath traveller is unusual in that it sheds the typical large overarching narrative in order to tell 8 isolated and simpler but still endearing stories. While your 8 party members work together in combat their stories are their own with a few overlapping plot points that come together at the end. The lack of inter-character interaction is lessened by skit scenes but it still seems strange to be playing a party that doesn't interact like a party, that being said the quality on show here more than offsets this one issue.

The soundtrack is absolutely incredible and one of the best I've heard in a decade. Combat takes what the studio developed with bravely default, slightly reduces the amount of different jobs, but gives us a ton of additional strategy with the break system. The 2D-HD graphics are both nostalgic and technically impressive at the same time. Voice acting is surprisingly on point, although H'annit's mannerisms leave something to be desired. All in all, if you're a turn-based JRPG fan, this is a must buy, and I hope Square-Enix takes note of it's success.

    Strengths:

Battle system: The system requires you to be creative and utilize secondary job skills. If you don't have enough skill variety you will have a bad time. I enjoyed the balance between using your Battle Points (BP) (which allow you to either attack more times in a turn or increase the power of the skill you use) and the break system (which is a is defined by the enemies weakness to various skills and requires multiple hits to leave the enemy exposed). You need to learn to combine skills and save your most powerful spells for the right time. This back an forth creates a fun decision making opportunity.

Classes: I really enjoy the classes that are available. The developer did a good job giving certain classes unique talents (elemental attacks or particular weapons). By doing to you need to try out multiple combinations of primary and secondary jobs to get enough coverage for all fights. Additionally all of the classes have their roll. Scholar is an Area of Effect monster with good elemental coverage but when combined with Dancer you gain access to the dagger weapon type, the dark elemental, and buffs for your other characters.

Atmosphere: The music and visuals are really well done and I find myself humming the various theme songs even when I'm not playing. The visuals are made to look "old school" but the lighting, water, and particle effects bring it into the modern world.

    Weaknesses:

Story: The individual stories really vary in terms of quality. I struggled getting through the introductory chapters for some of the characters due to lax pacing and overall disinterest. That being said some other reviews on here mention the lack of interaction between characters as a weakness (I would generally agree), however, they may not have seen the option to press "+" at various times in the story which generates a dialog between the characters that you are traveling with. I haven't completed the game yet, but I can say that I look forward to completing certain chapters more than others.

Overall I haven't found this game to be a grind and have really enjoyed my time with it. I will update this review when I complete the game!

All these things kinda changed upon completing the game. I think overall it took me about 90-95 hours to complete the whole thing. The characters are great. The combat improved substantially upon unlocking secondary jobs, which allowed more coverage and made fights feel more even. And obviously this is one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played. Graphically it is phenomenal and I feel it will age very well in that regard.

If I had one gripe, it would be the connectivity of the stories. Yeah, taking on the optional final boss does give a little insight into how they’re connected but it is still kind of a stretch, and still is only optional. Each of the stories are good, but it’s really hard to believe that a whole party is working together in them. You fight with them but no character ever really bleeds over into another’s story. I found this to be mildly disappointing but overall didn’t change my views of the game majorly, it just is what kept it from a 10 in my book.

Other than that I can say it is one of the best games I’ve ever played, in most other aspects. The character customization is deep, the combat is more like a complex puzzle, the stories are interesting and have depth, but wrap up just before overstaying their welcome. And the world is quite big despite being linear. I feel the game is worth it’s price tag for sure. Just wish we’d have more character interaction.

If you’re feeling like it’s a bit of a drag at the beginning, just stick with it. The first 10 hours are the hardest to get through, but after that it is such a joy to play. Loved how long it actually is. Felt I got my money’s worth

There is player interaction, it's called travel banter, and no grinding is needed (did everyone's chapter 4 w/out any grinding at all) as well as each story being connected (don't want to spoil). The design and game-play are stellar, stories great, etc.

It's incredibly fun, addictive and there are hours and hours of content to explore, depending on how much of the game you decide to check. It's an almost perfect JRPG.

My only complain would be that the story feels a bit weak, since there is never a "sense of urgency" or a global issue to be addressed. You are just checking what 8 people decide to do with their lives. There is no mission, apart from the dozens of sidequests and individual chapters for you to investigate.

But I don't even want to say this is a "bad" thing about the game. It's just a different approach. This is an almost perfect game and that would alone justify the purchase of a Switch.

Even after doing all the subquests after completion as well as final dungeon (spoiler)
    - difficulty is decent.
    - A little bit of repetitiveness throughout the completion of quests & character storylines.
    - Background blur/graphics can take abit used to.. can sometimes confuse the player as to where to advance.

Hopefully they will improve on the cons of the game. There is room for improvement but this game is one of the best if not the best switch games.

Nice! This game is something quite unique and a real selling point for the Switch this summer. It looks and sounds fantastic and even though I’ve only played 5 hours I feel compelled to carrying on with this. I’m not really big on JRPGs but the nostalgia and style of this game will appeal to all, not just the 16bit generations.

The thing is the game can be sorta boring for some people. Don't get me wrong but its a good game! But fighting peasants ( annoying monsters) can get annoying and the story can be dull. Who would travel around the world just to find a stupid book! The only part that made this a 7 is the boss fights. I would recommend getting this game when its on a sale for 40 bucks.

This game is... fine. Nothing special. It has RPG elements that all work, a battle system that is reasonably well done, but the nod to nostalgia reminds me of a time when Square made better games. This is certainly not the new Chrono Trigger, and the time it takes to finish it does not correlate to the quality.

Trying to keep this brief but informative, bullet points! -Music is

-Music is reused again and again. This game takes like 80 hours to finish, so this gets old
-Story is very bad. All 8 characters have their own stories that don't play into a greater story, and most of them are pretty cheesy and devoid of appeal
-combat is just good enough to make you think THIS GAME IS DEEP until you realize how repetitive the game is
-art style looks good in a trailer but doesn't hold focus
-20 hours of good game in an 80 hour package

    What I wish was different...
-focus on world building and making the story interesting. There is very little charm to any of the characters, nor through-line in their paths. They don't even talk to each other unless you make them.
-more music for a game that is so long
-more depth in combat if the game wants to be so long (look at Xenoblade 2...)

True final boss exists hidden behind a wall you would surely only find through the internet, and forces you to use every character, including the ones you've likely benched. So, to finish that, you must google and grind, all for a story that has 0 intrigue. Considering this means grinding my least favorite characters in a game full of uninteresting characters, no thanks.

If you hardcore LOVE JRPGs, this one is competent but not special.
If you care about story or presentation, skip this game!

While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
