Despite being a 20 year old game, the mechanics are updated wonderfully for modern times and the visuals are among the best (if not the best) that the system has to offer. This isn't to say that first timers won't run into various issues, being lost can be unrewarding and frustrating, but the reality is that in modern times it is easy to find solutions if you're no longer enjoying the experience. When you're on track, it's an incredible experience. While Metroid Prime 4 certainly could learn a lot from 20 years of other games in terms of first person movement and pacing when it comes to backtracking, it's still top in its class overall. Expand

Simply stunning! From dual stick controls to the classic and wii pointer. The visuals are outstanding. I had this game at launch on the GameCube and on the the Wii, in the trilogy edition. This is truly the definitive version. The love crafted into this game shows and doesn't deter even against new shooters. There isn't another game like this and I look forward with anticipation for Prime 4.

Nintendo just made a 9/10 game into a 10. The way the game handled on the GameCube is long gone and now plays like a modern FPS. The graphics have been updated and even though it doesn’t look like a game that would play on your your PS5, it’s one of the best looking games you’ll find on switch. The original story is still intact and now can be enjoyed portability on your Nintendo switch.

I had no idea I would miss projectiles illuminating the surrounding, but I do, and I've realise that it was big part of what made the original even more immersing, 2. I think there could be an option to toggle "looking slightly down" when jumping for dual stick controls, 3. Music could have been updated with richer sounding synths, and for those who'd prefere original music, there could be an option to toggle, 4. I still get lost every now and then even with hint, 5. I always liked the map, but It could have been tweaked to include more shades to easier differentiate between rooms, 6. it's a neat picking but original doors looked better. 7. 3 shots before being able to charge is an odd design choice.

The greatly enhanced dual-stick controls makes the gameplay that much better, and as you lock on to enemies, you get kind of an auto-aim, which makes shooting enemies and bosses a breeze. There is also an option for classic Gamecube controls and Wii-style motion controls, but I personally preferred, and stuck with the modern dual-stick option.

Simply a masterpiece that should be experienced by anyone into action/adventure games, and now made that much more accessible with enhanced visuals and modernized controls.

One small nitpick is the amount of backtracking you have to do in this game, but that doesn't hamper an otherwise great experience. Highly recommended!

Becoming a fan so late in the franchise and playing the 2D games, all I got to hear about for years was how good the 3D ones are. Between not owning a Gamecube anymore and Prime 4 being continuously delayed, hoping for a remaster of the original became one of my number one wishes for the Switch, and thankfully my wish was granted.

Metroid Prime captures the full essence of what makes the franchise great, with its puzzle-like bosses and fantastic progress system. The feeling of exploring, finding a new ability, and getting excited to explore new areas is at its finest here. Gameplay is fast and intense with very impressive visuals making this a true remaster in ever sense of the word, and overall for a game two-decades old it still felt as though I was playing something new and fresh. Where this game showed its age was in its brutal difficulty; games were shorter back then, so they had to be harder. A lot of my play time was spent replaying the same rooms between save points trying to reach a new milestone, and that repetitive nature rarely made me feel happy to succeed and made me instead cheer it was over. The other sign of its age is complete lack of direction. Sure occasionally the game gives you hints but sometimes they’re contradictory to where you need to go, and they only give you those hints after you’ve searched aimlessly for a bit. To make things worse sometimes you have to solve very strange one time puzzles to progress, with no indicator of where or how to solve them. To you Gamecube kids who figured these puzzles out with not strategy guide or internet I tip my hat to you, because childhood me would have given up.

In the grand scheme of things however these complaints are minor and cannot take away from the true work of art I played. The world was fun to explore, the music was some of the best in franchise (and game) history, and the most important thing was this game was FUN! Every boss fight felt great to win, every power-up made me feel cooler having earned it, and in general this game completely exceeded my expectations for Metroid in 3D. Years of hope and patience definitely paid off, and I can only hope more remasters are on the way because I want to continue this journey all the way to the long awaited new entry.

The dual analog controls make a huge difference in gameplay. The soundtrack is almost completely intact from the original, which is fine and good. The game just has some of the best atmosphere of any game ever made. As others have mentioned, the backtracking can be annoying at times, and probably adds a few hours to the whole game, but it can be enjoyable anyway because you get to use your new abilities to traverse those areas again. Figuring out how to transport between each area can be tricky. It would have been nice if Samus can warp to her ship or something, at a minimum.

The only reason I won't give this game a 10 is because some aspects of it have not aged well. Although the graphics are decent for today's standards, you can still tell that the general design of objects and environments are outdated. The environments are compact for today's standards and the game progresses quite fast. Special items are just waiting in a room to be found, which is kind of funny. The game relies on save points for saving the game and there are only 14 of them in the entire game.

This should be the gold standard of Remastered games.
They took something that was already rather good and updated it with better graphics and controls.

It does lose 1 point bc my go to sequence break for this game is no longer do able. They must have used the players choice version of the game instead of the first release. Not a big deal but still a point to bring up.

Absolutely beautiful remake with options for however you prefer to play. I would've preferred the trilogy, but this is the 2nd best game in the trilogy and I'm very happy to see this remastered. One of the biggest reasons is because the Switch is much, MUCH more popular than the GameCube. I'm sure this will get the Prime series in more hands than ever before. Welcome new Metroid fans!

The original title on the GC was released in 2002, a time when consoles were significantly more limited in terms of memory and graphics. Every aspect of the original game's design took this into consideration, and the end result is testament to how legendary Retro Studios is in their ability to deliver a gaming experience unlike any other regardless of limitations.

Even after all these years, playing this remaster evokes feels that no other modern AAA title provides.

By the way, for those of you worried that MP4 is going to be "similar" in scope, size, and graphics can relax - the reason MP4 development is so extensive is because they are developing the tools and game engine to maximize the game's use of the Switch hardware. If any one knows Nintendo and Retro Studio's track record, you know they will go all out.

It's honestly a fever dream to even play it, Retro and everyone who had a hand in this did a fantastic job. A great remaster of an absolute classic.

Metroid Prime is one of the greatest Gamecube games and one of the best games of that generation. It’s great to see it get a quality remaster for old fans to revisit it and so new players can jump in easily. They did an excellent job with this remaster by taking an already good looking game that was still holding up well after all this time and making it look beautiful. The game works perfectly too. They also added new control options without getting rid of the old controls. One thing to keep in mind though is this is a Gamecube game so it was made within the limitations of that time and hardware. Not that it really matters as I still enjoyed this more than the majority of current games but it’s still worth remembering when going into Metroid Prime remastered.

Metroid Prime is one of those games that can be hard to put down after starting it. The exploration is so satisfying and enjoyable. Every time you find a new ability it triggers your memory of all the things you went past that can now be reached/unlocked. The exploration is also elevated so much by the atmosphere, beautiful visuals and great soundtrack. The environments are a joy to become familiar with and all the small details, like reflections and moisture on the visor, add so much. Combat is good with a variety of great looking enemies to dispatch. There is also a good variety of weapons at your disposal, once unlocked, that you are regularly forced to switch between. Things really work well when faced with a small number of different creatures. There are some puzzles to solve too and the developers trusted players to pay attention to the environment and use the tools available. There is plenty of scanning to do and lore to discover which adds another layer of depth to the experience.

Metroid Prime does have some things to nitpick though. First of all I think the design could be a little tighter or the locations more interconnected to reduce backtracking slightly. It is also on the smaller/shorter side and could have benefited from one more location. I think most first time players will probably finish it in around 11 to 13 hours. On top of this, while it is definitely worth revisiting, it doesn’t have a lot of immediate replayability. You could try for 100% or do a different difficulty but Metroid Prime could be a one weekend game for many people. It does lack a little in challenge and the enemy AI could be better. Another thing is that some of the bosses don’t take quite enough damage which means the fight drags on a tad too long. However none of this brings down the whole experience too much.

Metroid Prime is a beautiful, fantastic game with very minor faults and this is a really well done remaster. I hope Metroid Prime 2 can get the same remaster treatment soon too. Metroid Prime Remastered is a must own Switch game. If you’ve never played this before then go grab yourself copy, this is one of the greats.

A terrific update to a classic. The spirit of Metroid remains in Prime; you'll unlock new abilities as you progress and use them to access areas previously inaccessible or locked. There is also a hint system which will point the player in the right direction if they're idle too long. If you're a longtime fan or newcomer to Metroid, this remaster is definitely worth checking out!

However, even having a good time revisiting it, i wished that some modern videogames quality of life mechanics, like fast travels, were incorporated as well, to speed up the game flow. Can be very annoying to move from room to room, and have to deal with some boring enemies like the Chozo Ghosts, that keeps respawning all the time. Also, there's no way to add marks on the map, to help us remember to look for items that at first we couldn't picked up. Such simple additions, but would make the gameplay so much better. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Metroid Prime Remastered is perhaps my least favourite game out of the trilogy, and I realized that while playing the remaster. It's still a fantastic game imo, but it's just not as enjoyable to me as the other two. Here are a few reasons why:

The early game of Metroid Prime is fantastic. Up until you find the wave beam I think the game is a blast. Starting there however, it strats to dip in quality a little bit. Changing between beams is not intuitive at all. You have to hold the X button and then use the directional buttons. Not only is that bad, but it also takes a little bit too long to switch beams, I wish it were more snappy. But right afterwards comes the, imo, worst section of the game - the Phendrana Labs. I really don't like this section, both because it's extremely repetitive, with several identical rooms, but also because it's the first and mostly only location in the game that forces you to use the thermal visor for long periods of time. The thermal visor makes me feel sick tbh. I just don't iike to use it. Every time I taverse this section I just want it to end as soon as possible.

Another thing I dislike about this game are the endgame multi-coloured enemies. Starting with the Phazon Mines, you will find troopers and later Metroids that are only vulnerable to a certain beam. This annoys me because, like I mentioned earlier, it's a slog to change beams, but also because some beams are worse than others. Once you get the plasma beam, the final beam in the game, you won't want to use any other beams, because it's the best one. By that point in the game, the power beam especially is really obsolete, and you will feel very powerless when facing these enemies with the power beam. The ice beam is strong, but it's the slowest one in the game and it's also not the best solution, and the wave beam is also lackluster at that point.

This problem segways into another problem I have with the Metroid series as a whole, with Metroid Prime probably being the game where that is most noticeable - there is no need to fight.
Enemies don't give you anything other than health drops or missile drops. But you only need health and missiles to fight, so why fight in the first place? If it's fun then it's ok, but when it's not fun it becomes a slog. If there was an experience system or equipment system similar to Castlevania or other metroidvanias, I would find an excuse for combat, but as it is there is none, so I find myself fleeing from most encounters towards the end of the game.

The final problem I have with the game is that some boss battles are just poorly designed. The hive totem is boring, the Omega Pirate is really annoying if you don't know what you're doing. It regenerates health, blocks your projectiles and turns invisible. On top of that, it spawns those pesky multi-coloured troopers, that I find myself just ignoring during this fight. Ridley is also not the best since he spends way too much time in the air, I feel like I'm facing Rathalos in the first two gens of MH. And the Metroid Prime is similar to the Omega Pirate.

At the end of the day, even though I complained heavily about this game, I still think it's great. I'm giving it an 8 because most of my complaints are just nitpicks, but the game definitely has some issues that prevent it from becoming a masterpiece.

Although the game has updated controls and this is for sure the best way to play Metroid Prime, I feel like the game is not perfect, but still really good

Metroid Prime is a really good game on its own merits, and to me it’s like comparing apples and oranges. Yes, both games are puzzle heavy, but that’s pretty much where the similarities stop. An opinion isn’t gonna help someone learn more about the game itself enough to buy it. Think: are people trying to decide between Metroid Prime Remastered and Skyward Sword HD? Probably not. They’re either in the mood for a cartoonish Zelda or for a sci-fi shooter aka apples and oranges. All that’s really happening is a dump on Skyward Sword, and that isn’t going to give Metroid Prime the love it deserves.

The primary difference in MPR from the original is graphics. It also has improved FPS (because surprise, the Switch is a better console than the Gamecube) which was mostly noticeable going *between* rooms. The control scheme isn’t anything groundbreaking. I get that it’s only $40, but there’s no way that a game that won GOTY in its time won’t cost full price in future releases. It’s a smart marketing strategy to encourage people to get involved with Metroid. Skyward Sword HD had several mechanics changed to remove annoying parts out of the game including the previously mandatory motion controls. It looks much cleaner and it runs at 60 FPS. I would be miserable going back to the original. MPR for the most part runs smoothly, except for one room over by the spider ball boss where it ran SO slowly it was running worse than Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (the game had high graphics, beetles popping out of the ground, and electric bombs dropping in the background. It was the only issue I ran into in my playthrough, so it wasn’t too big of a deal). It took me like two minutes to run ten steps! So no, even though I love the game, it isn’t the “best” remaster ever. It’s simply a really good game remastered. It's fine to dislike Skyward Sword, but it’s a different game. And if SS HD’s really that bad of a game, do you really want it to be compared to games you love like it’s on the same level? That said, I’d take Samus’s scanner over Fi any day of the week.

Metroid excels (compared to other Nintendo games) at tight controls. It also has a higher difficulty. I remembered it being harder than it is, so don’t feel intimidated from trying the game. Metroid Prime as a game can be covered in three categories: puzzles, platforming, and exploration. It fluidly moves from one area to the next using those three things. Expect to spend around 20 hours on your first playthrough.

This was an amazing game 20 years ago and this remaster proves it's still a great game today. Couldn't recommend it enough.

New effects don't stray from the original vision, but actually bring the GameCube game to today's standards. Metroid Prime Remastered is one of the best looking games on the Switch and a master class about atmosphere forged by superb soundtrack and art design.

Although its general level design is still quite fun and immersive, the last third of the game put the player in unecessary and confusing backtracking. It was acceptable in the 2000s, and even forgetful in the middle of this awe-inspiring 3D adventure, the first Metroid since 1994, but feels unengaging in 2023. Prime's combat is also lackluster, specially with Space Pirate encounters. The combination of numb combat interactions and uneventful pacing hurt the overall arc of Samus in Prime: our hero should turn from a solitary weak combatant to a resourceful one woman army, just what happens in Metroid Dread; sadly, traversing feels slow and unintuitive in the latter part of Prime when you should feel the most powerful. Still, a must play and a classic.

Pretty solid game. There are parts, that can get a bit tedious, but from my experience, its a really fun action adventure game.

I don’t get the hype. Never played the original game. Maybe that’s why. After finishing it I felt like I ran every single corridor 500 times. Map is super confusing. Menus are archaic. Enemies are annoying at the end, appearing again and again, at the end I just ran by them all the time. Nice sound. Nice textures.

96? You gotta be sh*ttin me...
It's a decent remaster of the original. Only took them TWENTY TWO years and two re-releases to finally add dual stick controls, one big round of applause for that one. They reworked the graphics and still call it a remaster, props to that. But 39 Dollars? F*** THAT. For that money you'd be right to expect a full blown remake, with new animations, new game

They reworked the graphics and still call it a remaster, props to that. But 39 Dollars? F*** THAT. For that money you'd be right to expect a full blown remake, with new animations, new game modes, extras, and all those bells and whistles. This looks a lot more like one of those fan projects where someone recreates a classic game in Unreal Engine, and apart from that, not much has changed.

That being said, I was a huge fan of the original game. It was a masterpiece back when it was first released. Playing it today, I can't help but notice a ton of issues that drain the fun out of the game. Frankly, it was hard to ignore those flaws 20 years ago, but I'm not the hardcore brainwashed Nintendo fanboy I used to be, unlike some other people.
Starting with the combat: Lots of enemies and bosses that are annoying as hell to fight. Circle around them, or let them circle around you, wait for them to reveal their weak point, shoot, rinse and repeat. It gets old -really- fast, and even back in the day, was my biggest gripe with the Prime series. And that's with the -new- controls, so just imagine how it feels with the old, clunky controls.... Enemies respawn every damn time you enter a room, so just in case you can't get enough of circling around the same enemies over and over again, this game got you covered. Then you have those f****** mosquitoes everywhere. The biggest challenge is to not lose your patience and throw the controller into the damn TV screen. Enough said; the combat SUCKS.

Then you have the controls: Clunky and unintuitive, sometimes unresponsive. Small things like rotating the map with the left stick, and panning the map with the right stick; The exact opposite of what everyone is used to. Constantly switching between different visors, beams and missiles. Press D-pad right to select the scanner, press ZR or D-pad UP to deselect the scanner? Those are small issues, but they add up to become one big issue.

Scanning every room with your visor is one big waste of time, unless you want to read the same bits of text a million times. Don't be the person who wants to get every codex entry in this game. Who gives a damn about the Chozo, anyway?

The level design and exploration is still amazing though, and that's where the game redeems itself. I just find all these raving reviews to be a bit much, considering that this is just another cash grab. It's a well enough excuse to play this classic game again, nothing more.

THE BACKTRACKING drains all the fun out at times. It’s made worse by tedious enemy respawns each time you return to certain rooms. Also, the map will make you got cross eyed after a while. It’s a good game, but it feels like a chore at times. Metroid Dread handled backtracking better with fast travel stations and new powerups allowing you to plow through low level enemies. I have a troubled history with Metroid Prime. When it first came out, I was an adrenaline filled teenager and I could not get into Metroid Prime because it felt too slow. I never played any of the other Metroid Prime games for that reason. Now that I am re-experiencing this as an adult, I really regret not getting into it back then. Now that I am re-experiencing this as an adult, I really regret not getting into it back then. While this is very much a product of its time, but I can say it aged very well. It feels like they did a solid job capturing the exploration of Super Metroid in the 3D world. The entire game feels like a puzzle because there is minimal guidance on where to go, similar to Super Metroid. This is ultimately a really great feature of the game because if you pay attention as you are playing, it’s very rewarding solving the puzzles as you go without looking anything up. The atmosphere is a little weak, it’s made up through some pretty uninspired world building done by scanning objects. The soundtrack is ambient which really makes for a passive experience. For some reason I feel like the sound design in Super Metroid was vastly more memorable - that’s not to say this game doesn’t have good music, but they have a lot of ambient filler tracks. I feel like this game misses a lot of the charm of Nintendo games, but it makes up for it in the gameplay. The core enjoyment of the game is really around the exploration and natural feeling of accomplishment of figuring out where to go. The game is an excellent remaster. It looks fantastic on the Switch. Nintendo did a great job with this release, and I believe they priced it perfectly. I enjoyed it far more than when I played it when it first launched, but just something about this game has always felt hollow to me. Great experience, but a hollow experience. Expand

I think I must be missing something here. On paper, I should love this game. It's a shooter, it's a metroidvania, it's acclaimed, it's a major Nintendo franchise and yet I just didn't like it that much. I've played through roughly 80% and just had enough. More power to everyone out there who loves it, but for me I can only score it a 7 because I can appreciate why it is techinically a good game. If it was a rating of how much fun I had with it, it would be an 8 for the first few hours, before the map got unweildy and a 5 after that. Expand

Gioco molto impegnativo e poco intuitivo.

This is an excellent remaster that preserves a classic game and makes it highly playable by modern standards. It also confirms that Metroid Prime remains as special a title as ever.

Game makers: take note. Metroid Prime Remastered is a masterclass in how to modernize a masterpiece. Twenty years after the series made the transition to 3D, this remains a classic that has stood the test of time. The updated visuals prove that with some optimization and visual tricks, the Switch is really capable of delivering great games. In fact, this is one of prettier – if not the prettiest –Switch games to date.

A classic returns in Metroid Prime Remastered. A complete visual overhaul makes the world of the game look better and more detailed than ever before. A new dual-stick control scheme makes the game approachable and palatable for new players, while veterans can opt for controls that mimic the original. Underneath it all, though, the masterpiece that is Metroid Prime Remains unchanged. Some more quality of life improvements could perhaps have been made, but it is a tiny complaint for a near-perfect remaster.
