Excellent game. This is without a doubt one of the best turn based strategy game every created. And it came from ubi, contains mario and rabbids - who would've guess it could be so good? Of course it has its flaws like backtracking but hell it still deserves perfect score :) I was hesitating to buy this because i didn't believe this will really work - so if youre unsure just give it a shot!

The sneaky option to get additional HP at the beginning of a battle feels like cheap cheating, and makes any strategic challenge of the game pointless. If you want to pander to people with low gaming skills, introduce a proper "easy mode" option at the beginning of the game, instead of tempting people to cheat each and every time they find a bit of difficulty.

The first one is this game shouldn’t exist, I can’t believe Nintendo allowed Ubisoft access to Nintendo’s flagship IP (intellectual property). I think this is a great sign and maybe Nintendo will be willing to let Nintendo characters be guest characters in other games. Regardless Rabbids and Mario are such a weird combination but here we are. The other shock is the game is good? A game with Rabbids is not only good but funny? I did not see that coming.

I hate to reduce the game by calling it a Xcom knock off but that’s kind of what the game is. The big difference to me is Xcom is much more frantic and chaotic where this is much more of a strategy game. Because the game is either 50% or 100%, it allows you to plan ahead and devise viable a strategy to beat every level.

Each level is kind of like golf where each hole is a par 3, 4, 5 or whatever. This game has a similar approach to the levels where each battle has “x” amount of turns to complete. If the battle is a par 3 and you do it in 3 turns then you’re rewarded with a little more experience so your cast of characters is a little stronger and little better. What this does, it encourages you to strategize and its almost as if it’s a fun puzzle to solve.

The game does have a story although it’s not the games greatest strength. It starts out with a young girl who appears to be a young genius and has created a device that melds things together. With her being a genius she’s also a Nintendo fanatic so she has Nintendo memorabilia all over her bedroom. When she leaves her bedroom, Rabbids appear out of nowhere in a washing machine, time machine thing. A Rabbid proceeds to put on her melding device and thats how Rabbids end up in the Mushroom Kingdom.

This when the game begins. You start out with Mario, Rabbid Luigi, and Rabbid Peach. As you play through the game, you unlock more characters like Luigi, Rabbid Mario, and Peach. Later on, you do unlock Yoshi and Rabbid Yoshi but it’s too late in the game for them to even make an impact. Of all the characters in the game, my favorite was Rabbid Luigi. With his vampire ability, I was able to do damage and keep the rest of my team healthy and alive.

There is one thing that I have to talk about and that’s about halfway through the game you fight a boss. He’s the Phantom Rabbid Boss and this fight is one my favorite moments of the year. He’s like an opera singer and what he sings about is basically him insulting Mario. I don’t want to get into specifics of what he says but man it’s so good.

Now that I’ve talked about the best part of the game (that boss), now I have to talk about a few complaints I have with the game. The game overstays its welcome, it’s a little too long. The first two worlds move along quickly but then the third world seems to take a lot longer and then the final world just felt like it took half the game to finish. It probably wasn’t that long but it felt like a long time. I eluded to this earlier but you get Yoshi and Rabbid Yoshi far too late in the game. By the time you get them, you’ve already come up with viable strategies and you’ve already put the resources into other units. In my opinion, you should unlock all of the characters by the end of the first world.

My recommendation for this game is to take it slow. Sit down and play for an hour at a time and play it for a few weeks. That way it won’t overstay its welcome. I do recommend this game and its one of my favorite games that I have played this year but its not something you want to mainstream in a couple days.

Un juego bastante entretenido en este tipo de genero de estrategia, donde hay una cantidad considerable de tipos de armas y ataques, donde combina los 2 mundos para crear una historia agradable, uno de los mejores juegos de Switch hasta el momento.

Mixing the crazy rabbids with Mario in a turn based grid strategy game is right up my alley.

Pros: - The dashing and pipe traversal made the grid based game much more interesting - Great graphics and angles never had a problem seeing the battlefield - Skill trees - especially being able to reset at anytime - were perfect - Boss battles and enemies were all well done - Super effects

    - Could of forced use of all characters at some point in the story to make you survive without your key members

I think this is the most Switch-spirit game so far. I love how the flow of the game works flawlessly between docked, undocked, on the sofa, in the underground, on the bed; creating a positive buzz as you feel you're more clever than some twisted rabbids. Strange and powerful at the same time.

The results could've ended in a spectacular mess but instead came along a bunch of creative mechanics and possibly also the best turn-based game I've ever played. Yes, including Pokémon.
The Rabbids stay, well, Rabbidy and Mario stays, well (again), Marioy.
The result of Ubisoft and Nintendo working together is inspirational as this is the best Mario game EVER.

After spending 70 hours playing this game, I can tell you it is addicting, colorful, funny and sometimes pretty complex too. A few bosses are difficult to manage (and I love it). As a fan of Mario, I would not want to miss this one. Amazing music and level design. Nice variety of moves, ability and weapons. You cannot go wrong with this game, even if you are not familiar or turn-based combat.

A really good startegy Game for the Switch. I admit: I was sceptical when I first saw a Crossover with the Rabbits, but luckily it didn´t drag the Game down. If you like XCOM then you will probably get some enjoyment out of this Game.
Especially the presentation is genius. I usually play on a PC and use my Switch on the Go, and this is one of the few Games where 30 FPS aren´t bothering me

A crossover between the Mario and Rabbids franchises, with gameplay reminiscent of X-Com and similar tactical games, this game features the Rabbids ending up in the Mario universe after one of them steals a scientist’s visor device that allows them to mix things together into horrible/funny amalgamations. A hole is ripped in reality in the process of all this happening, and it is up to Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and four fanboy Rabbids dressed up as each of them to set things right.

Mechanically, the game is an interesting fusion, taking mechanics from the Mario verse and applying them to X-Com like tactical combat (though without the frustrating attack chance system that game features).

Each turn, a character can attack, use a special ability, and move.

The characters all have various toy-like guns, ranging from shotguns to weapons that look like Mega Man’s M-Buster to sniper rifles and gatling guns. The core gameplay revolves around cover-based combat, as you have only a 50% chance of being stuck behind a low wall and are completely immune to fire from the other side of “tall” cover. Most of it can be broken by shooting at it with weapons as well, but that will prevent you from dealing damage.

On top of this, there are various “special” weapons with a one turn cooldown - each character has one standard weapon plus one special weapon, specific to that character – which vary from hammers to rocket launchers to grenades to little toy cars that drive over and explode. These all have an area of effect, and many of them can ignore cover as well, at least under the right circumstances.

All of these weapons – both primary and secondary – also have some secondary status ailment type effect that triggers about half the time, be it bouncing enemies away, covering them in ink so that they can’t attack, freezing them and shutting down their special abilities, sticking them in place with honey, or sucking away their life with vampirism attacks.

On top of this, each character has two special abilities that they can use once a turn in addition to moving and attacking, though these all have cooldowns. These include “overwatch” like abilities for the Mario characters, which allow them to attack enemies when they move – which can even be mixed with the weapon abilities that push enemy units to deal extra damage on your turn! All of the rabbid characters instead have shielding abilities that protect them from harm, which synergizes well with their tendency to rush in and do a bunch of dash attacks.

In addition to these “standard” abilities (which themselves vary from character to character – some can attack multiple times, others have an AoE overwatch attack, while the shields protect against various different things at different levels of efficacy), the characters all have various unique abilities – the Mario characters have area of effect buffs that improve your units in some way for a turn, while the rabbids have things like an area of effect heal or which pull or push enemies around or debuff them.

It is the movement system is where the game’s Mario influence is most mechanically obvious.

The battlefields are laid out in a 2-D isometric grid, with a few different levels to them – higher areas allow characters to deal more damage to those in lower areas. They have blocks (both stone ones that can be broken by attacks and metal ones that are impervious to damage) as well as pipes, that allow characters to move around between areas and move a short distance after emerging, allowing characters to move between levels of the battlefield as well as rapidly move around the battlefield and between platforms.

In addition to standard movement, if you move a character so that they end their movement in the same square as an ally, they will jump up into the air, allowing you to position your units in more distant locations which you can’t directly run to. All of the Mario characters have some special ability linked to jumping – Mario can bounce off of the head of an enemy, allowing him to hop again, while Luigi can be propelled off of the heads of two allies. Peach’s jump causes her to heal those near where she lands, while Yoshi will do a ground pound, damaging both friend and foe.

On top of this, there’s also a “slide” attack, where a character who moves through an enemy’s square will slide into them, damaging them. The Mario characters all have basic slides which allow them to damage a single character each turn, while their Rabbid counterparts all have special ones and can slide into multiple enemies in the same turn.

All of this comes together into a game that is surprisingly dynamic, and yet has very simple mechanics.

From the first world I was love with the battles and I tolerated the exploration sections as an ok breather in between fights even though they didn't really fit in with the battle part of the game. I would have much preferred exploration sections that allowed us to use our battle mechanisms to solve puzzles (blasting through walls, double jumping off allies to get to hard to reach spots, etc.). The puzzles we do get are simple enough and somewhat tedious (pushing crates mostly). The camera control can feel constraining at times and controlling Beep-O is often clumsy but there weren't very many puzzles early on so it wasn't a big deal. However as the game continues they start layering more and more elaborate puzzles and the time between fights becomes longer. The game keeps piling on chores you have to complete before you can get to the parts of the game you enjoy. Additionally once you reach the fourth world you run out of new enemies to see only getting reskins of previous foes. Add that to the fact that the same enemies always respawn in the same place at the same time in every battle and that's going to hamper replay value. In the fourth and final world I felt myself getting fatigued and frustrated, some of the luster had worn off. It was still a game I very much enjoyed but it felt like the back quarter needed more polish and less filler. The exploration phase felt like an after thought. I know Ubisoft was hamstrung as Nintendo explicitly said they couldn't have any platforming in the game but the movement in battle is so kinetic and fun that it seems a shame that we couldn't use that movement to explore. In the final hours of the game I couldn't stop thinking about how great a sequel would be to this game and I guess that speaks to how strong the foundation Ubisoft has built here.

I'm anxious to see if Nintendo has any other oddball collaborations in the pipeline (no pun intended) because I'm dying to play them. Ubisoft has really broadened my idea of what a Mario game can be and I'd love to see Ubisoft or another studio do the same for other classic Nintendo characters.

It generally has a good difficulty progression though I would say that level 1 was kept too easy for too long. Enemy variety is good though it would have been cool to see more mushroom kingdom related characters in the mix.

The story mode is hilarious with a particularly wonderful World 3 boss. The look of the world itself is amazing with Rabbids and Mario art meshing completely. Moving through the worlds between battles is an excellent way to break up battles and the way they divided levels make it feel instantly familiar to any Mario fan.

Controls are alright though the camera can be a bit rigid at times. A minor gripe I had was that you could not keep a cool weapon for too long as they become obsolete fairly quickly. It would have been better if there was the weapon skin system. Annoyingly, because of the emphasis on story, Mario and at least one rabbid (who is beaten up in cutscenes) must be present during single player, meaning the only time you can see a full Mario or full Rabbids team is in multiplayer. Multiplayer disappoints a bit in that there is no online mode and no vs mode. A map editor would have also been awesome.

Overall, this is a great game that fans of Mario or the Rabbids should not overlook.

I'm about 4 years behind on my back catalog of games, so picked this up for 14.99 and WOW is it worth the price. Very fun game, makes you think, and even the comedy mostly works (the selfie with Rabbid Kong made me spit my drink out). Just fun, different from many other games. Give it a try.

I have to hand it to Ubisoft: the marketing strategy for Mario + Rabbids has to be the best in recent gaming years. In hindsight, it's so simple: 1) leak a rumor for a Mario & Rabbids crossover; 2) let people make fun of the concept for months on end; 3) have a big reveal at E3, after the joke has already died down, and show to your unsuspecting audience that the game actually (gasp) looksI have to hand it to Ubisoft: the marketing strategy for Mario + Rabbids has to be the best in recent gaming years. I mean, I can think of no video game characters more openly loathed than the rabbids. They're ugly, dumb and obnoxious, and that has usually been a big enough problem to all but suppress their comedic potential. Mario and his gang, obviously, are the complete opposite, with people who haven't even owned a Nintendo console in decades having a soft spot for the plumber.

Of course, having the rabbids parody Mario could have backfired pretty hard. Luckily, the writers for Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle managed to find an elusive fine line between parody and flattery, and as a result... the rabbids are suddenly funny. I mean, yeah, some of the jokes in the game do fall a bit flat, but it's all mostly very well done, with the selfie-taking Rabbid Peach a clear highlight.

And yet that would all be for nothing without compelling gameplay. Luckily, Ubisoft also delivers in that front, offering beautiful worlds to explore and fight insane turn-based battles in. Each character has their own strenghts, complete with a skill tree, and strategizing around them is super fun. Combat has a surprising amount of depth, and seamlessly integrates the comedic value of both worlds into a single whole that actually manages to make sense while also including, of all things, guns. Now that's positively an accomplishment.

In fact, the amount of care put into this little package is a sight to behold. There's a level of polish and a sense of joy in all sections of the gameplay that makes the game feel like a laid-back funny adventure even during the most grueling battle sequences (and trust me, they can get pretty grueling). Yes, there's the camera, which is quite annoying during the light-exploration moments, and some momentary technical hiccups that have frames freezing for a good few seconds, but it's hard to get hung up on the game's shortcomings when there's so much to actually enjoy here.

    TL;DR:
Nintendo has been hinting that it's more open to lend beloved franchises to third parties since Hyrule Warriors was announced. With Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, that stance pays off in a big way. Against all odds, Ubisoft's debut Switch exclusive is a surprisingly engrossing turn-based RPG that has the Mario gang (and Rabbid versions of them) adventuring through a Mushroom Kingdom in lovely disarray. It's not perfect by a long shot, but there's obviously so much passion poured into it that this hardly matters. Kingdom Battle hits plenty of notes where it counts: gameplay, production values, and, yes, humor.

First of all as a Nintendo fan and a SRPG fan let me just say that this game caught me off guard. I bought it on a whim and I couldn't be happier. Any fan of the genre and Nintendo's Mario universe should pick this up. Who would have thought this mash up could work? I mean seriously. lol. If only Ubisoft could put this kind of effort and quality into all their titles.

Thankfyll some rabbid forms join your team as you set out to save peaches kingdom from this rabbid invasion..
The game is super linear, which I appericate.. deal with the occasional simple puzzles either for extras such as new weapons, or music tracks, go from battle to battle, collecting coins along the way to buy new weapons, rinse repeat, unlock newcharcters to throw into your team of 3..
and I actually really loved thisgame for the first few hours, here your team takes tearsn moving across the board, you can suffly between your 3 heroes, sliding into enemies, using your teammates to jump ontop of enemies or in a better position to do more damage, it really becomes a clever juggle once things get deep and youre done learning the basics, coming up with a strategy to use different charcters in different ways, Mario being a great allrounder, rabbid luigi, the 2 peaches healing, regular luigi beng a great sniper, rabbid Mario being an amazing tank.. and then theres the yoshis.. lets just ignore that theyre here. But I had ablast changing my teams up, chosing which weapon to give them with different effect for my specific play style or strgateg, all while dealing with new enemy type as the game goes on.. stopping it fro mgetting too repetitive, that being said.. this game is still super repetitive, 15 hours is way too long to being doing the same thing over and over, go into this area and either clean house or get to a targeted area to escape, I felt mind numbing after a while..8 -10 hours would would’ve been so much better here… its not like it felt like a new challenge each time, a lot of battles just felt like busy work to pad out the game.. which brings me to multie tier boss battles… these battlss are few and far between, but boy is it annoying to cleaer a wave, lose the final wave and have to redo the wave you just did… I wanted to bang my head againt the wall each times.. ive proven I can beat this wave, why are you making me do it again just to get back to where I was, where I lost…when the game allows you to refill your health each wave with no penalty anyway.. theres is no logical sense in that.. another annoyance I have with this game are the battles where rabbids can keep spawning out of the grown, tem spawning out of the ground isn’t the problem, the problem is them coming out of the ground doesn’t count as a turn, they get to come out, attack first.. potentially kill one of your team mates, and ruin a great run you were having…it just doesn’t feel fair that if I still have moves left, I know a spawn is cming, I cant pre attack before they come out of the ground, this definitely should count as a turn..
Mario + rabbds kingdom battle is a great simple, yet complex puzzle to solve.. it had its moments of annoying me, but It definitely has me excited for its sequel next year.. I cant wait to see what changes have been made to make this game even better..
I give Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

Being one of the early 3rd party games on the Nintendo Switch, I also just wanted to show my support. This game is a lot of fun and runs extremely well.

Graphically, this game is beautiful. All character models are built extremely well and all animations are cartoony but fluid. Movements that all characters make are fluid and seem natural. The game world is no different and Kingdom Battle encourages and rewards exploration. Rewards the player can expect to receive are character artwork, world artwork, additional weapons, and more.

One negative aspect of the game are its spikes in difficulty. Normally, this isn't something that bothers me, but the game does these to encourage the player to return to certain levels with upgraded weapons to earn a better score. This isn't a major con, but can remove the player from the emersion. Another weak point of the game is the story. Without going into spoilers, the game really loosely ties the Rabbids franchise with the Mario Kingdom empire.

Purchase this game if you are a fan of strategic turn based combat, enjoy humor that can be endearing at times, enjoy a minor grind for better weapons, and just want something fun to play on the go. I highly recommend this game to first timers of the turn-based combat genre as well.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is an RPG where you'll need to position your team of three characters and attack enemies with weapons. There are a number of techniques available; while moving, you can run into an enemy to damage them, and characters have specific abilities. Taking guarding into account is important too, as you can avoid enemy fire, but enemies can also guard themselves from you, forcing you to think about where to put your characters so that you can both attack enemies and minimise your own damage taken.

Between battles, there are sections where you control characters around the world, solving puzzles and finding secrets. Both aspects of the gameplay are fun, and it gets quite difficult too.

The game has a lot of charm, such as the amusing weapon descriptions and interactions between the Mario cast and their Rabbid counterparts. It won't appeal to everyone, and I found that it occasionally glitches/lags, but Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a great RPG and game in general, with surprisingly deep gameplay and great music.

I'll admit, the game is unexpectedly fun, and while the main gameplay is pretty much just "X-Com" with Mario & Rabbids, it feels different enough to be enjoyable to an extent.

To begin, the first cutscene shows how the Raving Rabbids found their way into Mario's colorful, happy-go-lucky world. And as anybody who's heard of these annoying creatures, the Rabbids begin to wreak havoc across the Mushroom Kingdom. And so it's up to Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi and their Rabbid Cosplaying-Counterparts to save the day.

The main gameplay is an RPG, again, similar to X-Com. However, their are some parts of the game that require puzzle-solving skills to move onward, giving you a break from battling. While these puzzles may be challenging, the rewards aren't so worth it to hurt your brain over, unless you love looking at 3D Dioramas of the characters in the game, go crazy.

The main hub-world, Princess Peach's Castle, is a bit confusing once you pass the first few chapters in the game. You've got buildings scattered across Peach's lawn that the Rabbids built, and while the contents of these buildings are useful, the buildings themselves are virtually useless since you can already change your weapons and characters before the start of any battle.

That's Story Mode, no let's talk Multiplayer. It was actually much more fun to battle against my friends than to play and adventured filled with slow-paced puzzles and useless rewards. Their's not really much else to talk about the Multiplayer option.

Overall, it feels weird (and wrong) to see the Raving Rabbids and Super Mario on the same screen. But if you can ignore that (which I can't) then maybe you'll enjoy this game. As for other stuff such as graphics and music are mediocre, but as for the main gameplay of the combat system is a blast.

The length of the game is perfect. It started getting repetitive against the end but finished just in time to still be enjoyable. I didn't do side quest stuff and it took me 20+ hours. With all the side quests I imagine you get about 30+ hours out of it.

The game is not for everyone, if you don't like strategy games you shouldn't buy this but if you do it's a must have for the switch. Also, I don't think kids under the age of 10 will be able to beat it (but maybe I'm wrong on that one)

Solid game, not a masterpiece though, 8/10

The battles were challenging with new and interesting enemies being introduced as you progress through the game.

The world exploration between levels was a great way to progress in a not-so-linear format and presented puzzles and challenges along the way dispersed with little tidbits of extra story.

    Love this game.

Ubisoft's patches to the game have added a free local multiplayer versus mode, which is similarly great, and is the key to forgetting about the horrible RNG after endgame, and the gold edition not worth buying. Kingdom Battle is a burden for those new to strategy games, but the skills to success are taught within the game, making this a great all-around title for anyone looking to expand their Nintendo Switch library. The game play itself was smooth for the majority of the time. Every now and then the frame rate did drop but this was negligible at times and didn't spoil the game at all.
The primary story line required players to travel through the different worlds. Each world felt like a good length and each battle was different with different mechanics to get around. I found that I was able to pass most of them without too many issues, however the ones that I didn't get 'Perfect' on I did go back to achieve those. The boss battles were a nice surprise with each one bringing something different to the table. The best boss personally for me though, was Bowser. I found that he made for an enjoyable last boss with a wide range of attacks that meant you had to be fully aware of your surroundings. All in all though, I didn't find any boss that I didn't enjoy tackling.

Once a world has been completed the challenges will then become unlocked allowing you to complete in essence what is a mini battle. If you're not careful these can kick you in the backside, but this shouldn't be too big an issue as you should be used to the skill tree.
There are 4 'Ultimate' challenges available once the final boss has been eliminated which will challenge you and your knowledge of the game.

Overall this is definitely 8.5 out of 10 for me. Well worth the money spend.

*The game does not hold your hand. This was one aspect I was afraid of since lots of modern Mario games are too simple and seem to walk you through the whole way.
*There are plenty of weapons to buy, and upgrades.
*There are plenty of enemies to fight, all with different themes depending on the world.
*The game allows you to play with your own unique style of play.

    Cons
*Mario is required to always be in your team. This is something I wish I could change. In certain situations I don't want to be stuck with Mario. I want to test out different combinations without him.
*The lineup is limited to only 8 characters. They really could had added more characters, with unique abilities. Disgaea , for example, has tons. Even Mario Party games have a larger lineup.
*You are required to keep at least one rabbid in your team. Honestly, to me, the rabbids feel kind of inferior to the ones they cosplay as. All I need is Mario, Luigi and Peach and I am pretty much unstoppable.
*The skill tree feels kind of limited. There isn't many choices and many of the skill tress feel like copies of each other. Not much creativity was put into them.

the world is vibrant and colorful and a treat to "explore" through the exploration is somewhat limited it feels natural, and somewhat simple (not too far into the game so I don't know if there are any head-scratchers yet).

the only problem with the game is the customization is a little boring, I wish there were some kind of armor and weapon customizations... talking about weapons they all kinda look the same with different skins... they should have had more "wacky" or strange weapons... the rabbids are cute but I wish they had more of a varied look, they all look like they are just cosplaying.

Overall, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle brings a welcome shot of vitality to the turn-based strategy genre thanks to interesting team mechanics and a colorful Nintendo theme that sets it apart from its contemporaries. Taking one of the biggest IPs in the world and marrying it to an all new type of gameplay was a huge risk that paid off wonderfully, and I’m glad that it finally found its way to my Switch. Now, bring me a sequel with a couple of needed improvements and 100% fewer rabbids, and we’re in business…

Mario + Rabbids is an incredibly welcome surprise. I assumed that a game starring Rabbids would become grating long before completion, but my fears turned out to be unsubstantiated. Beep-0 is a great lead character, and the Rabbids' hijinks are dialed back to a level that works. This is a fun take on a tactical RPG; the simplification of hit percentages worked especially well. The game isn't without fault — greater variety in characters and levels along with more meaningful customization would be welcome — but most of the issues are minor in comparison to how much fun the game is to play. Hopefully Mario + Rabbids marks the beginning of a new series and a sequel will take these ideas further.

Ubisoft acquired Nintendo’s license, added some Rabbids in the mix and entrusted the game to its Italian studio that never developed any large game on its own. What’s more, neither the studio nor both IPs had anything to do with tactical games. I still don’t understand how Kingdom Battle turned out so good. [11/2017, p.46]
