This game was a lot of fun to play. Some of the boss fights were very difficult, which I liked, but it is pretty annoying that you have to travel back to the boss from your last save point to try again. The final boss was too easy in my opinion, and I would have liked a little more storyline.

I generally avoid 2D platformers, because most of them are low-effort garbage. Hollow Knight is not, and absolutely lives up to the hype. The stylistic and design choices are impeccable, and Hollow Knight is bafflingly one of the most immersive and memorable games I've ever played, packaged in a format that I normally avoid specifically because it's generally so boring and forgettable.

Very fun and well designed game. Recommended. But the difficulty can be crazy stupid in a lot of bosses... I think it should have an option to choose difficult ... I want to enjoy the DLCs but the crazy difficult levels make it impossible to enjoy, only for very hardcore gamers with tons of time and patience.

A great metroidvannia game that will have you exploring beautiful worlds. My only hang up on this game is the lack of story. There was nothing there that would initially hook you to continue playing it.

In one of the most impressive metroidvanias out there, this game's stark hand-drawn graphics and expansive play actually make you alright with forgetting whatever story is going on, and rather gets you lost in the fun of exploring every nook and cranny of the map. That learning curve though...steep.

Hollow Knight throws its players in a whispering, obscure, mesmerizing subterranean world, Hallownest, that perpetually captivates both technically and thematically. It is a massive, sprawling mosaic of deeply distinct biomes that neatly and naturally fit together like puzzle pieces, each distinctly varied from the others. The layout of this world continuously morphs and surprises not only visually but also technically as every area offers a new level design structure, platforming mechanics, environmental hazards and unique hostile creatures to slay within, all of which perfectly fit and expand on the game's deep lore. This makes for an exceptionally heterogeneous and varied experience, beautifully accompanied by the game's subdued tracks, enveloping the adventure in an elegantly enigmatic, unsettlingly melancholic aura. Progressively, the world opens up more and more whenever a new ability is acquired, and the explorative freedom of the player gets exponentially increased with an impressive multitude of possible progression paths. Even with a couple of faster means of traversal, the nature of this progression system leads to some extremely tedious backtracking, but it's a bearable price to pay for this amazingly interconnected map. Each area bleeds into the nearby ones in a maze-like tangle that hides an absurd amount of secrets, characters and treasures. The sane explorers of this kingdom are few, but it is possible to find, resuce and befriend many of them, leading to immersive interactions that expands on the world, providing new content or merely moments of levity, furthering the power of the player's agency. Combat is definitely the less impressive side of the game: disappointingly simple and static throughout the journey, with not many active options. Bosses, for the most part, present the same issue: although pleasantly challenging, they're pretty simplistic with repeated attack patterns and a lack of true depth in their movesets, only rarely with meaningfully different phases. This, however, can be partially excused thanks to their impressive quantity and variety, just as the combat is greatly enhanced by many passive abilities unlockable and an amazing healing system that requires strategic timing and rewards good play with stronger offensive options.

The games base game is a fun adventure that can be quite challenging at times, but never unfair. The areas of the game have been made with extreme detail, and in my option, the game even rivals games like Metroid dread, which I personally enjoyed a lot Now on the other hand some areas of the game can be beautiful and fun to explore, others can be a dread to explore, and feel more like a chore than a fun area. I personally hated deepnest, but it did its job as a hard dark area, but places like the queens garden can be horrible to explore. But, after all the positives and flaws there is a great game made by only two people with passion, I would recommend hollow knight to anyone with a shred of interest in the game, and even though they bad parts are there the good parts make up for it

The map mechanic is just annoying, needing to find an NPC in a maze of identical rooms with traps and pitfalls that you often can't see unless you've hit them once. Several of the broaches you collect that give you "abilities" just end up making your character feel normal, instead of improved, like the broach that prevents you from bumping backward after a strike.

The game does get more fun as you play, but the first several hours are a slog and it doesn't feel like it was a necessary one. It just feels like you start of lacking several basic abilities/characteristics that any standard metroidvania needs to make your character competent, and the only seeming explanation is "We needed a level up type system because all games have them now."

The art style is interesting, but a little too bland for its own good as the novelty of it quickly wears off. The music is there, but doesn't really add anything. The controls are good, but could be a little bit tighter. The gameplay is fun, but its been done much better very recently.

TLDR: Skip Hollow Knight. It's fun, but there's better stuff out there.

Now I died 30 times on Hornet, trying to optimize everything (amulet with recovery, cocoon near to get 2 extra life each time...), I know what to do (I have the pattern of attacks) but still not managing to do it. I'm on the mode of opening the game for 10 death and close it to play something else. Maybe one day I will discover more of the game, which I found intriguing and interesting (I explored everything else possible with my limited options) and no I don't have the impression to personally learn something from this fight...
Update: 20 hours later, I enjoy a bit more some part (collected 25 charms and starting to do combo with them), still avoiding as much as possible bosses (I only did false knight, hornet, dung defender and broken vessel), still facing a lot of death :)

Wasted far too many hours trying to get back money lost from accidentally dying twice to some explosive plants and at this point am just getting sick of it. I read online that spending 1k at the shop you can get a key to unlock the crypt to the far right and get your money back~ but when going to there you discover that it's only previous death, which doesn't help at all and is a huge waste of a grind to unlock an waste your time on.

The bosses are fun, the level design is fine, the world is easy to get lost in (in a bad way). I did enjoy the game up until the point I lost all my money; so you'll probably enjoy it too as long as you make sure to use the bank.

And as much as I hate to call anything overhyped; the people saying it is overhyped are absolutely correct. It's a good game and all but definitely not a masterpiece.

Also as an aside when looking up what peoples thoughts on the dying twice all your money penalty; people generally came to the consensus that the person should just "get good", which kind of hints at a very cancerous community.

The plot, however, was unfortunately and obviously an afterthought (admitted by Team Cherry). It is dark and gets darker, sparse in the beginning and really picking up speed toward the end of the game. There are multiple endings, most of which are behind a very serious difficulty ramp late-game that has seen many a player rage-quit and none of which, in my opinion, turn out well for the Knight that is attempting to clean up the mess others left behind. Also, one of the many random NPCs is a character that is obviously meant to be disabled and is busy poking her young with a sharp stick, which some may find disturbing or even triggering.

This was a fun play until the difficulty got to be too much and the plot issues overwhelmed any remaining sense of achievement. I can only hope the upcoming Silksong pays closer attention to this. Still worth a play, though.

Mechanics-wise, the bug protagonist handles reasonably well. He can turn on a dime, attack in the four cardinal directions, and eventually gain other skills such as dash. My only complaints are that his reach is sadly short and his jump is floaty. While there are upgrades to increase his reach, they are found a few hours into the game, meaning that most fights up until that point are hit and runs. As for his jump, the floaty quality only becomes a problem when attempting to attack aerial enemies. As soon as the jump button is released in favor of the attack button, he begins to fall.

All in all, this is a game that requires commitment. While I still haven't finished it and it isn't on my top five list, I have to admire all of the work that went into making it.

Unfortunately I found this to largely all be undermined by the games design and the way that it never offers any clue as to where you should be going next. Every time you enter a new area you have to find an NPC before you gain access to the map, finding this NPC can often be a time consuming and frustrating experience as without the map navigating the similar looking areas successfully is all bit impossible. The problems don’t end there either, even once you find the map it’s still not clear which of the many directions available you’ll be able to traverse without unlocking additional powers. There is no real fast travelling from most areas either and check points (rest stations) are often spaced relatively far apart and dieing, which will happen quite often, means spending even more time repeating areas to get back to where you was. I’m all for games that don’t try to hold your hand but I played Hollow Knight for 6-7 hours before giving up and I’d estimate at least 4 of those hours were spent wandering around just trying to work out where I was supposed to be going!!

There is much to admire about this title but in the end it was all just too frustrating.

The developers really know how to hit the feeling depending on what they want you to feel. And thx to that I could really lose myself in the game and just play for hours

In the end, the switch version was nice but if you have a pc and a controller to the pc then I recommend getting the pc version. The switch version thx to the controllers feels weird and clunky and really get on my nerves when I am playing against a boss or just trying to do some jumping

This game would of REALLY benefited from the same system Celeste has, where you can give yourself additional jumps (or just make you immune to damage all together). It would not of been detrimental to anyone else, it would of only made things easier for people like me who ended up just becoming frustrated and made the game just not fun to experience, even though it's clear a lot of detail went into it.
There is so much stigma in adding accessibility options to games, but to me, even if I was not disabled and I buy a game and i just want to have fun and enjoy the beautiful, meticulously handcrafted world.. what's the problem with that? People say it makes things too easy, but Celeste went above and beyond for people like me and I've never, ever seen anyone call that game easy. I know in my heart it's just a gamer ego thing but Hollow Knight just made me absolutely miserable, and it was entirely preventable.
I bought HK when I was slightly younger, and I was really, really good at the combat but I just could not do the platforming for the life of me. There is no reason a game should make someone cry and beat themselves up because no matter how hard they try, they literally just can not do it. That's not what a video game is about. I know they probably had a vision about how cool and epic and "challenging" it would be to make the game the way that it is, but you can't design for everyone.
Give people options, I don't understand.. shouldnt devs want as many people to experience what they've worked so hard on, even if not related to gameplay, like the characters and the immersive atmosphere, the beautiful background art, things like that? It's foolish and Nintendo-esque to demand that people play only the way you think they should.
My biggest hope for silksong is that they take a note out of Celeste's book and implement more options for accessibility. Not even just for me, but (at least on the switch version) I really don't remember there being much in what you could alter in the game. It needs to start happening because things are just becoming less and less fun in the world for individuals like me.

Nintendo Metroid was one of the first games I played, I played it decades later and it was still incredible. It gave you a small booklet with all the different power ups you might be able to find and what they do, it explained the enemy types and the rest was up to you. For every obstacle or closed area in the game it was clear that you were missing a power up wherever that might be. It set the scene and then let you figure the rest out like any good story or narrative.

Souls like games have a unique progression system, that lets you choose how you want to play and power up accordingly. If you get stuck on one boss there is always another route and even if you get stuck completely you can keep getting stronger until you can overcome the obstacle. I actually think the Souls analogy for this game is wrong, just because it has health regeneration points and is hard does not make it a souls game. It is really an old school Nintendo game like the original mega man but with much less context.

Back to this is bad game design. Firstly this game gives no context or principle game mechanics. Secondly it confuses the player with a currency called (geo) allowing you to buy what are in reality weak buffs (charms), and you gain meaningful powerups /abilities after defeating a boss such as an enhanced dash which allows you access to previously inaccessible areas. As the game does not explain any of this you can get completely lost trying to buy these buffs (charms) as a way to progress. There is no sense of reward in buying buffs, it also creates farming which honestly is dull, but more importantly is does not help you in the way souls games do by making you genuinely more powerful. So you can early on get stuck with should I buy these buffs or try and defeat a difficult boss to progress.

Having defeated the first two bosses and what I discovered later to be an optional boss, I came to an area of the map in which I was completely stuck. I spent hours trying to figure it out, was there an area I had missed or a boss I had not defeated to give me that powerup for access. I had just got the dash ability to get in to this new area, was it a buff (charm) spent many more hours farming to buy all the buffs, even considerably boosting health. Was it the (in actual fact optional) boss I cannot defeat in this new area? What could it be, none of the above. At this point, I had to look it up. Now it was either that or quit the game. At this point I am about 20 hours in. I have played a lot of games and a lot of difficult games over the years and I do not look stuff up. It means I am defeated. Turns out it is a game mechanic that you have from the start, a game mechanic that I never used for any enemy or accessed any area, the game did not explicitly give me or hint to this unused game mechanic, but suddenly it is essential to progression. Honestly is that good game design?

Please pause for the logic here in game progression, defeat boss gives you a powerup to access other areas or just allows access to other areas (for first two bosses and large map areas of game), optional buffs (charms) you can buy which might help you with boss or areas of game. The game also opens up several what you will later discover are very hard optional bosses just to confuse you and lead you down garden path. Then suddenly forget all that, you need to use something you had all along but never used or never new existed and if you don’t figure it out you cannot progress with the game. Yes the downward slash. Someone people figured it out, many more probably didn’t. Don’t make me give up a game because you (game developer) are trying to be too clever or just honestly the opposite. If you are going to make a game based on cult games then better that experience please. This game is getting hype because it is beautiful to look at, but it’s not a great game and in no way surpasses or equals the incredible games it is trying to emulate. It’s not fun in any easy, hard, challenging, puzzle based or any other sense. It’s just confused. Went on to complete game. I have spent several decades playing games and this is a 6/10.

I mean, it it superb obvious where you should use your double jump (I mean, it is obvious there will be a double jump in the latter game to beging with). It is superb obvious where you should use that horizontal jump, it is obvious where to use that shadow dodge. And even if it wasn't already very obvious, another "feature" is that there are many ways to complete the game. This means basically that it doesn't matter in what order you do the things, that means you will never get loss. And a Metroidvania where you don't get lost is like a platformer without pits.
Yeah, I know, there are a whole bunch of people out there talking about how a big of a maze is Hallownest, but I insist. If they think that way, these people clearly didn't even tried the very first Metroid, or any metroid at all (maybe Metroid Fuzion is on par with Hollow Knight on terms of ease of exploration). Or barely any metroidvania at all.

However, while the navigation is trivial, Hollow Knight has some pretty good boss battles that make you fell you are actually playing a somewhat challenging game. Unfortunately, boss battles are like 5% of the full game. And the good ones are the dlc/secret bosses. Other than that, it is just about spamming dodge until you get a place where you need a new power, pin it in the map, move to any other direction, repeat until you complete it. Oh, and a bunch of shiny collectibles.

In my experience, it is pretty good to introduce 2D game to a kid with a decent knowledge of games in general. It has that Casino effect in which it is good rewarding you with nice sounds and upgrades whenever you do virtually any thing.

    The visuals are great.

You've got to constantly travel all around the world of the game, with extremely limited ways of shortcutting journeys, except for very few locations.

Some of the bosses are extremely challenging, which I could live if it wasn't for the fact that you've got to grind your way back to them when defeated (the game doesn't start you at the boss again when you die, or anywhere near). I could understand the developers doing this if there was a challenge in reaching the boss, because that could be thought of as part of the boss stage, if you will. But it's never challenging, in most cases I can get back to the bosses fine 100% of the time, so what's the point? I can't get my head around the developers' reasoning. And the best part is when you get back to the boss you've got to retrieve your "soul", and when you do that you're inherently not at 100% health. So, you've got the choice: face the boss with reduced health, or go back and grind your health up.

Grind, grind, grind. It's a cheap way of artificially making the game "bigger", and a cynical move by the developers. Fine for teenagers who have adults paying their bills and have mountains of time and patience to do this, but for working adults this game takes liberties. I've had to abandon playing it, which is a shame, because if it wasn't for the grind I'd have loved to have completed it.

The difficulty isn't the problem I have with this game, but the entire gameplay. I feel like its work and NOT enjoyment.

    1) Gameplay - The little coins you pick up is sparse but more importantly you have to purchase everything, Map, other BS tedious stuff. Purchasing items becomes strange.. Its as though I have to purchase everything and work.. Its seems more like a chore than a game! Score 2

    2) Controls - complete BS - the Power shoot button is the same thing for healing! WTF! So i have accidentally hit the power shot button but wanted to heal - leaving it to be wasteful!*The jump is completely BS - I die more times sliding off the edge than I do with regular enemies. Someone said the controls are tight?? They are ABSOLUTELY NOT! When you jump the jump feels like there is an invisible wall and not a normal jump arc.. Score 3

3)Graphics - People said visuals are great.. They are OK - they made it sound like this artwork is absolutely amazing.. The colors are nice but the actual artwork is ehhh.. Its basic stuff - 6

    4) Level designs are completely horrible. Some kid developed these level designs since they are NOT FLUID! Its gets tiresome and exhausting! I have to backtrack over and over trying to figure out where I can and can not go.. I spend countless hours trying to figure out oh can I get through here or not? Score 2

    5) Music and sound effects - 5. Its ok but this doesn't compete to Salt and Sanctuary..

Overall, I paid and very disappointed in how I feel I was misled on this game. People said this is challenging.. I don't find it that bad.. What's bad is the level design, controls, and gameplay. The tedious management of changing out your pins for special abilities only at the REST stop is annoying. This game seems like the developer was trying to make you WORK for it rather than enjoy it! If I feel like am playing a game that requires me to do WORK WORK its no longer a game.. Its WORK! I love a great challenge and the bosses have been fun but that's about it!

But, the game is not fun. I love challenge in a game; I even completed the Bloodborne Chalice Dungeons, and I've completed every Souls game from Demon souls onwards, I don't mind taking my time and learning attack patterns / practice. But it's a real shame that the Hollow Knight designers have opted for some lazy artificial difficulty in most situations rather than actually designing. For example, most bosses only have a couple of attacks, but have so much health that you may well lose due to making a mistake because of the sheer length of time a fight can take. At another point, you fight a previous enemy again, only they are twice as fast. Another example is that some of the platforming sections require 10+ perfectly executed jumps with no save option anywhere along the way. This is made more frustrating as there is a slight delay in the game responding to jump inputs. The game also expects a whole lot of grinding to purchase necessary upgrades to open some paths.

The game also doesn't value it's players time. As an adult who works most of the time, backtracking for 2-5 mins to get back to a boss or a painful platforming section is simply not acceptable in a modern game. The save points are few and far between, and there is no way of travelling between them, instead you have to rely on a separate transit system.

i guess my final complaint is that they've just missed the mark. If you've ever played Salt & Sanctuary, a Soulsborne, Metroidvania styled platformer with a fantastic world, factions and a brilliant upgrade system. As such, playing Hollow Knight feels like it falls short on every bar, except possibly the world itself, which is great.

TLDR: Lots of promise but not worth your time. Play Salt and Sanctuary, does everything better from the platforming to the world to the combat.

Hollow Knight here is just a mix of badly executed stuff put into a Castlevania skeleton - besides visual design, as I mentioned before. But let's be honest: for a game that cheap, what one should expect of great, right?
Your character is incapable of doing the basics any other character would in the same conditions/other titles, consequently making the combat system a big pain fest: a genuine showcase of how one should not develop a metroidvania game. Things get worse when you see every hit landed turning out as a big fireworks performance, thus affecting negatively your view by occluding important details and delaying key actions players should take.
Because wow, designing a great and slow-going fireworks performance every hit is the ideal when you deal with an ARPG. Why not? Why they should fight under a fluid combat system with modest effects and decent movements? Meh. Unfortunately, as combat is a core mechanic that's a big letdown, making this side of the game feel both tedious and a painful experience. Dealing with bosses? Good luck, I can't see how worse then could design some of them.
But well, lore is kinda interesting (just that, kinda) with some good elements but nothing you will ever care or keep grinding and searching for more, seeking to turn on your Switch every morning in thirst for nice puzzle resolutions, big and epic fights, potentially awesome re-playability... To be honest, for a game said to be metroidvania Hollow Knight is just sad and disappointing. Ah, the music is also GREAT, but once you finish the title you wanna ask yourself why you wasted that many hours in your life when they could be well spent avoiding this and doing anything else that crosses your mind.
If you're curious about it, go ahead but you have been warned. At least turn the volume up and enjoy both the music and the view, as it's all it got to offer.

I found the challenge here to be gimmicky at best, with cheap mid-boss enemies, damage model based on hits and touches by enemies and awkward controls/platforming made even worse on the Switch thanks to the Joy-Cons.

You start with a little guy that has 1 attack (3, if you count directional attacks as well) , a heal spell and a jump. That's it. No block, no dash/evade, no way to avoid getting hit and as I've mentioned getting touched means getting hit. The enemies are very agile and have a long reach, you yourself are very small and cover a short area, which leads to a lot of cases where you are being hit while trying to hit.

In short, the combat is abhorrent!

There is no learning curve like what you had in the Souls games, where if you could overcome a difficult enemies/sequence you could get past it by learning from mistakes, learning new moves and strategies. There's none of the here, as the game is very straight forward.

The platforming is probably the worst offender, it has this this awful downward attack that you have to use to get through some parts which is a pain to archive on the Joy-con. Add to that tight jumping sequences where you are harassed by enemies you cant avoid...

Some enemies respawn while you rest at a bench, others respawn if you exit an area, making making it feel very inconsistent. The area maps that you have to purchase, which is incomplete when you buy it, also updates new areas you've been through while resting at a bench.

You have to grind your ass off to buy basic game mechanics, like maps, map pins, etc.

Overall I think this game tries so hard to be a 2D souls but falls flat due to all of the above, instead being nothing more than an over hyped poor attempt with pretty aesthetics.

As it is, the game is unplayable and enjoyable without a scale back on the difficulty, maybe with a easy mode added.

If you're looking for a Souls like, you won't find it in Hollow Knight. I strongly recommend waiting for Dark Souls Remastered or Dead Cells, both out later this year.

I will not write anything about the game. I'll write about the port for the Nintendo Switch. Everything is very small! In addition, the game has delays and lags, and the gamepad seems to react late to any click. This is especially noticeable in the stationary mode.

The port could be better. In some games, when porting them from a PC or from older consoles, interface elements and fonts are enlarged to make it comfortable to play on a small screen. About the performance in a two-dimensional game, I generally keep quiet!

The only thing that saves this game from its coffin is the scenery and graphics. It really looks stunning.

However, this game suffers from one huge issue: the game does not tell you where to go. At all. It is bad if you give way too many instructions to the player, but it is also bad if you give none.

Repetition overall became a huge annoyance quickly, as the game makes you do the exact same thing again and again, for example when you have to learn the moves of a boss to beat him (i.e. when he let's you do the hop prick hop), and you need to go ten times through the same five or so screens to get to him.
I like challenging games a lot, but with HK, it felt artificial and unrewarding to me - more of a cop-out to justify the very limited battle system.

Played it for about 10 hours and then realized how the game feels like menial labor and overall annoys me, and that I have no interest in exploring it further, so I deleted it. To me, it felt like a very average game with an above-average look.

    1. I could not figure out where on earth to go. It wasn’t like Breath Of The Wild. Which gave you some direction but still made it fun to explore. This game doesn’t give you any direction. And it is not fun to explore simply due to movement and confusion. Metroid games made it so much fun to get lost but here nope. 2. Oh boy...
*Takes glasses off like Dr. Wells.* FORCING THE PLAYER TO BACKTRACK JUST TO GET THE ABILITY TO TRY AGAIN IS NOT DIFFICULTY. Sorry for my rant there. Look, I got so bored, and so mad at the fact that you have to go BACK to where you died and fight a shadow copy of yourself just to proceed every time you die? WHY? The fun of hard games is being able to instantly try again. But this is not fun. This is annoying. So I just realized I wasn’t having fun. So I stopped.

The health recharge system is clever but you have to stand perfectly still to get the build up to start. This makes it almost pointless during close quarters combat where there is no real opportunity to use it. The map system is useless, requiring you to travel a very long way back to a shop just to get the proper map for a new area. The dark souls inspired "recovering souls after death" mechanic is utterly pointless. I'm really not sure why they included it. The graphics are very "00s flash game", not at all the inspired art style a lot of reviews seem to describe. I'm sure as more abilities unlock the game will get better but that doesn't justify what is a very poor opening 4 hours which is giving me no real incentive to carry on. For me the character and game world were awful looking. Felt like kiddies halloween drawings with some neon thrown on. The sound wasn't memorable. I couldn't tell you about the boss battles because I never got to one. It just wasn't fun to play, or nice to look at. It controlled so well but was just so unlikeable as a game that I didn't want to play it after a very short time. It didn't give off any sort of atmosphere or vibe, just felt like a neon world of bugs. I know it probably captured the look it was going for as it seems to be trying to achieve that Halloween concept but that is all it achieved, a tacky halloween concept with no substance, or atmosphere.

Like I say the controls and the characters responses to my joypad movements were exceptionally well done but for me that mechanical response was all they got right. I don't like games that lack cohesion and character and this had neither.

Hollow Knight is an incredible achievement that combines smart game design, a rich world, and sharp combat, with an enthralling insectoid world and a story just begging for you to find it. Team Cherry’s title is a high watermark for Metroidvanias, as the satisfying abilities and countless collectibles add variety and meaning to exploration, rewarding every discovery. Yet, while the challenge is a rewarding part of the process, I do wish that the title made some concessions and shone a bit of light in the darkness for those first fledgling steps.
