A Metroidvania type of game. This game is a must, no matter the platform. This game slowly immerses the player character's evolution into a very complex game. Music is great, graphics are pretty and the thematic is creative. Again, a must-have game.

It has a deep but vague story with character development tied in with even just where the character is. Hornet, a servant to one of the three dreamers, meets you at the beginning and tries to prevent you from proceeding, but you prove your strength to her and she leaves as you finally get the dash ability, which is used in every area after that very often both for platforming and dodging attacks from the much faster enemies after that fight, which takes place in the second area of the game. Many people would complain about holding off abilities, but it's a key part of a metroidivania, as well as a good way to keep a steady learning curve. Which takes me to the difficulty. This game is not the dark souls of metroidivanias, but in fact if you played this game with all the bosses and areas the game is significantly harder than any dark souls game. The game may go up in difficulty fast, but it is always steady and gives you a good idea of the mechanics throughout the area up to the challenges, which require everything you've gotten. The map system of this game is often complained about a lot, but if anything it's better for an adventure game. I liked having to find the layout of my room to determine where I was in relation to benches and other things, it made me explore each room all the way many times. It also compliments the fact that each area has a few secrets you can only get to later, which you'll have to remember for later, which is neat. Great game overall. Expand

Hollow Knight is the game I've been waiting for since finishing Super Metroid and SotN 20 years ago. It is the true successor to both Metroid and Castlevania; the game I always wanted but the game that neither franchise will ever give me again. That being said, know what it is you are getting.

I vividly remember playing Super Metroid for the first time. I remember those dark, unfamiliar corridors around every corner, finding horrifying creatures I was unequipped to initially handle, getting lost while searching for important items everywhere. It was both an adventure and a giant puzzle; that was the appeal. If you enjoy Metroid but like more modern/guided experiences like Prime, this may not be for you. Needless to say, if you don't enjoy Metroidvanias in general, definitely shy away from this.
However for those who truly want a 'let's get lost in a deep cave and fight horrifying, difficult monsters' experience, this is the game for you! Speaking of which, I love how difficult the fights get, it's very refreshing and exhilarating to walk towards an open area, see a large, detailed, menacing figure and actually feel tension and hesitation. That's a RARE feeling in video games today. So many devs pull punches to not alienate modern audiences. This game doesn't. If you want to win, particularly later in the game, you have to fight for that victory and earn it. The music, while not super catchy like in Super or SotN, is very well done and fitting for each area. The graphics, while simple, are gorgeous, especially in some areas. Hollow Knight uses actual 2D animation, which is both appropriate for this genre and beautiful; truly a lost art in this age where so many other games settle for 2.5D.

I gave it a 10, but I have some complaints, all incredibly minor and each only deserving of -0.2 or so off the score, so a 10 feels a little disingenuous, but it's definitely higher than a 9! It feels like a solid 9.5, but the scoring system here doesn't allow for that.

I will reiterate again, I love how punishing this game is.. in combat. The flow of exploration however is a bit hit or miss, and sometimes punishing in a way I don't like. Don't misunderstand me, it's very serviceable still, but you can royally screw yourself in some situations simply by going left instead of right. Example, I went through the entire Hive area and encountered the boss at the end before realizing there was a single save bench at the start of this new place. If I had just gone left instead of right when I entered, I would have been good. There was nothing in the 'flow' of the level design that made me want to go that direction though. Save locations are pretty important in a game that isn't shy about killing unprepared players. Many of the first saves are marked on signs to help you, cool, however I think most players would have liked a few subtle hints for later ones as well, especially in areas that immediately start with 4+ different routes off the bat.

The music is also almost 100% ambiance, which is ok and fitting for this game, sure. I would have still liked more than just a handful of catchy tunes though, even if that's just a preference thing. I still can't help but compare this game to Super Metroid and SotN (mostly because it's so well made) but that also makes me feel like something is missing when it comes to BGM. Again, this is a preferential nitpick. The music in it is still good, moody and invokes feelings of wonder and desolation, so it does its job at least!

I bought a Switch on a whim with some long-forgotten gift card money I had, and was looking for cheap titles to pick-up to occasionally kill time.

Hollow Knight caught my eye on MetaCritic's "best games of all-time for the Switch" list. This intrigued me enough to look it up on Nintendo's eShop on my Switch. As it turns out, Hollow Knight happened to be on sale for $9.99 at the time, to which I thought "Eh...what the hell. Let's give it a shot. It is only $10".

    Fast forward to today:

I am currently 45 hours into this game, and simply cannot get enough of it. In fact, I still have a long way to go because I have every intention of fully completing this game 100%+. Everything about this game is a pure masterpiece, including:

*The hand-drawn characters and level designs that are ridiculously detailed, along with the humorous
dialogue between you and other characters you encounter on your journey.

*The tight controls that make the navigation of this underworld so enjoyable. Heck, they even make.
the most challenging of boss battles feel like a fair fight, because you always feel like you are in
    control.

*The soundtrack/score fits the melancholic aesthetic of the underworld that you fight and explore
your way through, as well as the sound design of enemies, weapons, and abilities draw you in even
    further.

I noticed that there are some complaints about the difficulty level of some of the bosses. There are, indeed, difficult foes that will require some time and dedication. There has been a few times where I've fought a boss over-and-over for 1.5 to 2 hours straight, but I always seem to find a combat technique or charm that I was not initially utilizing in order to defeat these foes. Sometimes, you have to continue to explore and find better charms, abilities, and upgrades in order to defeat adversaries you are struggling with. Isn't that just a typical part of this genre?

In a nutshell: Hollow Knight is the best "Metroidvania-style" game that i have ever played (and I've played ALL the classics). I can't believe I only paid $10 (on sale) for this kind of quality and entertainment. Better yet, I can't believe a team of THREE people were able to come up with this much game, with this much detail, for so little money.

Just do yourself and by this modern-day classic. I promise you've spent way more money on so so so much less.

While merciless and unforgiving Hollow Knight rarely delves into "unfair" territory besides 1 or 2 bosses, everything is clearly telegraphed and results boil down to the players ability to react accordingly. People who deem this game too hard or unfair simply need to get some patience, and get good. Hollow knight will constantly push you as far as you can go and demand you go further, and with its fair and ruthless combat you'll find yourself getting there after a handful of tries.

Hollow knight has no real low points, only highs. Each boss fight is accompanied by moments of quiet serenity where the visuals and atmosphere tell a story of their own, and each boss fight is a rhythmic and hypnotic masterpiece that leaves you searching out every fight you can find.

The sheer volume of collectables and secrets will lead you searching every crack and crevice trying to find ways around any obstacles, the desire to push onward and find out more about the mysterious world of Hallownest, the Hollow Knight, The Pale King, every character you meet along the way and the silent protagonist the Knight is always there, forever pushing you to listen to every word, and soak in every moment. A masterpiece of gaming in an industry dominated by "open world AAA easy to follow RPG", hollow knight shows that even a 2D game with no structured narrative forcing you, with unforgiving, simple yet deep game play can outshine even the largest AAA game.

A must play experience for everyone who enjoys video games and a good challenge

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is amazing. Everything has been expertly crafted, the story, art style, gameplay, and difficulty are all done in ways that i cannot even begin to talk about.
As someone that grew up playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, i have a very personal connection with Metroidvanias, and, in my opinion, Hollow Knight is the only game that manages to surpass Symphony of the Night.

The story is amazing, i love how it involves the player by making them interpret what happens, there over 100 pieces of optional dialog, created for those interested in a good story.
The kingdom of Hallownest is massive and beautiful, from the bottoms of the Ancient Basin, the caves in Deepnest, the desolate Kingdom's Edge, and beauty of Greenpath, there are so many places to explore that it becomes a passion to run through the areas and admire the scenery.

The difficulty is good, yet on the more punishing side. The game has constant difficulty spikes that you can't avoid, some bosses may be easy, while others are incredibly hard. Some hard bosses include the dream versions of older bosses, which are either the same boss from before but with a buff, or a completely new boss that you didn't know about. These ruin the pacing of the game, because dying to the boss means you have to go back and fight it and hope you don't die, making the act of traveling the kingdom to fight the boss very repetitive. (Spoilers) In Godhome, lies the pantheon of Hallownest, a boss rush that contains every single boss in the game. You need to fight and defeat the bosses, except if you die you have to do it all over again from the start, no save spots, checkpoints, nothing. There are some checkpoints, but they are very scarce and still makes you fight the bosses. If you die to a boss after the checkpoint, you have to fight all the bosses that came after said checkpoint to return to that boss. These include two bosses in the end that are completely different from the original ones, the Pure Vessel (harder version of the Hollow Knight) and the Absolute Radiance (harder version of the Radiance). These two are not the same bosses from before, and they are the hardest bosses in the game and if you die to them you have to the entire thing all over again. Aside from that, this game is still amazing and i still love it. While the difficulty is on the more random side of things, i still love this game for what its trying to do, and how it does it.

I started playing again found the next area, and fell in love with it. I couldn't stop playing for days. There are so many areas and so many items and things to do. The controls are smooth and it just feels good to play. At first, it may seem like there is no story, but as you explore, you find out what happened. The game is hard, but once you beat the bosses and learn there moves, they become easier. So even if you got stuck on a boss, which I did many times, if you keep going you can get through it, and the feeling of beating them is amazing. The game has a mode where if you die, you can't respawn. I think this was a great decision to add because after playing it once, you have already learned the game and the bosses move sets. This game is easily one of the better games the Switch has to offer. It is a huge, fairly open Metroidvania with something around the corner, no matter that be one of the many quirky characters, or a big, powerful boss. This game has much more than that cheap price point may tell you. This isn't just a must have. It's much more than that.

Hollow Knight is a modern masterpiece! It has the whole package: great art design, nice music, an isolated atmosphere with great ambience, interesting characters and totally ACE gameplay that offers an actual and very enjoyable challenge. Plus, it runs buttery smooth on the Switch. Team Cherry nailed the Metroidvania genre on their first try! This game is a steal for it's price.

There is so much more to talk about with this game, and I would love If I could talk for hours, but the only way to truly appreciate this game is to play it yourself. If you don't like it, that's fine, but I highly urge everyone to play this game, or at least look it up.

A game that I randomly found that I thought would be worth a few hours turned into a pice of art that I poured over 100 hours in (which is a whole lot for an indie game.) Everything about this game is pretty much perfect: the exploration, the game mechanics and gameplay, the enemies and bosses, the animation, the artstyle, the environmental storytelling, the deep interpretive lore, and everything in between.

This game is the marriage of the fantastic, explorative gameplay of Super Metroid and the atmospheric storytelling of Dark Souls, and I love it to death. Christopher Larkin's orchestral score is a masterwork: not only haunting but beautiful, intense, and emotional.

one of the few problems I have with the game is some of the late-game Godmaster content. **** Pantheon Markoth. The Pantheon of Hallownest would be fine if these dream bosses weren't made arbitrarily difficult by their arena changes, as well as no reliable way to practice in said arenas.

In all, this is easily my favorite games of all time, and if you haven't picked it up yet, I highly recommend you do. It's on pretty much every platform and it's about 15 dollars, sometimes even less (it's free on Playstation for November!) If you don't pick it up, you're missing out on one of the greatest indie games (or video games in general) of all time, and I cannot wait to see what they do with the sequel.

I never put that amount of hours into a single-player game, and the only games that come close to this number of hours are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Smash Ultimate, most of which have been played in multi-player against friends. This is a testament to how much is in this beautiful masterpiece. Each area is so intricately interconnected to the areas surrounding it. Each area has their own architecture and color palette that distinguishes where you are on the map. Controls were buttery smooth for me, and I've managed to beat most of the bosses without any problems that weren't my own fault. Each enemy was fun to fight, and completing the colosseum of fools challenges, where you have to fight most of the enemies you have already fought in a more perilous situation, were difficult yet fun to beat. I don't really have any complaints for this game. It's just that good. Buy it no matter what, especially because its only $15 USD for a 40+ hour game! Expand

In terms, beating the challanges laid out before you, gives you a real feel of having overcome it with your own skill.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion this game was amazing in every aspect. The different environments are amazing. The fact that you can be in the fungal wastes which is covered in spores and then 2 seconds later drop down to the city of tears this huge raining city just amazes me. All the bosses were hard (some extremely hard) but felt fair at the same time. They give signals whether it be with sound or an animation that always got you learning their move patterns and trying to figure out when to dodge. I’m reading reviews that are saying they die a lot on the boss fights which is true. 99% of the time you are not going to beat the boss in 1 try. Which in my opinion is good. If you beat the boss in one try is that even enjoyable? I love all the bosses in the game because each one feels different then the others with a unique set of moves to memorize. The overall aesthetic of the game is beautiful too. I also hear complaints of not knowing what to do next which I feel adds on to the charm of the game. It allows you to explore the whole map on your own without shoving in your face where to go and what to do. Sometimes you’ll find yourself not even trying to beat a certain boss but just walking around the map trying to find places you haven’t explored yet. It is a hard game I’ll give it that but throughout playing you start to understand the mechanics of the game and will even be enjoyable for the casual gamer. Oh and by the way it’s $15. Expand

    One word: Wow!

Hollow Knight has been one of the best gaming experiences I've had in the last 20 years, and I will no doubt play this game for many more years to come. Most of the negative reviews seem to be placed on the difficulty, level design, graphics, or some combination thereof. One of the best things about this game is the story, and I'll try and complete this review with little to no spoilers. There's so much to discover, even outside of the story, and it's way better to figure this game out on your own in its entirety rather than relying on help guides.

Difficulty - The bosses in this game range from relatively easy to brutally difficult. Depending on the paths you choose to complete the game, you can also have a harder time than others might have had. The level design of the game does a great job of pushing you towards the "default" path so nothing should really feel unfair. Chances are if you are struggling with a boss, you could have missed something that would have made that fight a lot easier. It's totally cool to take a break by looking around and seeing if you missed anything, or maybe a break was just what you needed in order to collect your thoughts and try again? A couple of commenters mentioned lacking abilities for a game of this type and I could tell they did not play the game in its entirety as they no doubt would have known about things they most likely "missed". Slow down. Take your time and enjoy yourself.

Level Design - As stated above, the level design will seem to "push" you towards where you need to go. That doesn't mean you won't be exploring, but there are certainly ways to go off the beaten path and beat the game in an entirely different order. Just keep in mind that straying off the path can take somewhat difficult fights and make them an altogether more brutal challenge. The placement of the different "biomes" throughout this little world is very finely tuned, as well are the objects and enemies within them.

Graphics - This isn't the most graphically intensive game around and I'm not really sure what people are expecting. I have this game on the switch and xbox one, and both versions are beautiful.

Overall, this isn't a game you can necessarily sleep your way through and beat. There will be trial and error, but nothing is so punishing that it feels unfair. Enjoy the ride because it's nothing short of spectacular if you really give it a try for what it is.

The Knight has a nail (basically a sword) that slash forward, upward and downward (but only in midair) and it´s incredibly fun to fight enemies like this. The Knight can also use attacks that take a bit soul (basically just mana) an do more damage than regular attacks. The Knight can also heal himself by "focusing" which also takes a bit of soul. You regain soul by attacking enemies with the nail, which creates a risk-reward combat system which is really fun to engage in. The level design is fantastic as well. The world is massive and there´s lots to do and explore. The game also looks very great, particularly the sprite of the Knight looks great and is well animated. The soundtrack also is great. It´s very atmospheric with catchy tunes being reserved for the boss-fights. The boss-fights are one of the highlights of Hollow Knight. The patterns of the bosses are fun to avoid and they really are a test of your skill. All in all, Hollow Knight is a phenomenal experience that I think that you should try. It´s biggest flaw is that it´s only 15 bucks digitally. I would recommend that you give Hollow Knight at least a try. Expand

The storyline. When I bought this game for the very low price of £16:99, I didn't expect it to have such a deep story because it was an indie, 2D platformer. I just thought it looked cool and had some challenges. But it really did well with the backstory and enhances the world around you. I find that so amazing that an indie game can be as good as 1st party and 2nd party games. The mechanism. I really admire how they made the attack diverse. One minute you are fighting some monsters and the other ur trying to use your nail as a pogo stick. The charms fit well with the setting and all offer different things which start to make the thought of combos.

The monsters and NPC's. This is a true highlight of the game. The monsters have well-thought attacks to fit with the environment and give the place ambience and The NPC's have empathetic feelings and show great set of personal skills.

Music. I know at this point I'm just blabbing on but it is so good. The music is great. Really, compliments to Mr.larkin. They fit so well with the background and boss of the area. Its gives of a nostalgic sense for people who have played it for a long time.

Bosses. The bosses are diverse in there attacks, their own story, and their appearance. It gives off a feeling that there is more (and there will be more when silksong cones out!).

Map. The map is MASSIVE. It is so well thought about and well designed that it's probably one of the best bits about it. From abandoned depths to great cities, it includes everything.

The art. I saved the best till last here. The art style is admirable and cure, but still can be threatening and scar. City of years shows so much in terms of what they could do with their cartoony yet formal drawing.

All in all, BUY. GOOD GAME

I'm just at the start and I already love everything about this. I love the dark, moody atmosphere, I love that it is challenging but not unfair, I love how the controls feel, I love the insane amount of content for the price, and, most of all, I love Metroid.

From a platforming perspective, this game is as good as it gets. It has easily become my favorite game of all time.

I have logged over 120 hours from 3 different playthroughs, and every single one of them has been thoroughly enjoyable. Also, I’m confident that I have not experienced/discovered everything the game has to offer (though I’m probably close).

The level design, puzzle design, control design of this game strikes a perfect balance of difficulty versus skill. I never feel slighted by the game and it’s challenges. In fact, most areas of difficulty that I experience are from my own mistakes or poor approach (especially with boss fights).

Despite being a “2D Game” the sound/level/graphic/dialogue design of this game is an absolute masterpiece. All of these elements work together to make you “feel things”. When the environment is right; this game can be SO captivating. I found myself enjoying it the most in a quiet setting with my Switch docked to my TV, and using a pro controller. A darkened room with surround sound also added to the experience.

My only “gripes” about the game are:

    1. Some of the story telling is cryptic and understated. The player is left to draw a lot of their own suspicions and conclusions (which I believe is entirely intentional on the creators behalf). As your traverse through the game, certain main story lines become more apparent. However, I think this type of storytelling makes a players intrigue for the game take longer to develop. I, personally, was not hooked/addicted to the game until about 25 hours of gameplay. After that, I couldn’t put it down!

After completing the game, there is a lot of fascinating lore and conclusion-making by avid fans (especially on YouTube). It really makes you think back to certain interactions and environments, and makes you even more fond of the game, even after completing it.

    2. Some of the movements for the boss fights and platforming are VERY precise, which I find difficult on the Switches native handheld controller(s).

I found myself needing to accomplish certain tasks in the game by connecting my Switch to my TV, and using my pro controller. This made several challenges more manageable (for me). Your mileage may vary, of course.

Overall, I cannot recommend this game enough. If you enjoy long-form games that involve deep exploration within a challenging platforming style (including epic boss fights), then you HAVE to give this game a fair shake.

What a fantastic game Hollow Knight is! I went into this not expecting much, and came out a different gamer (this was my first ever metroidvania). Wow! Everything in it is just sublime - the atmosphere, the music, the progression system, the charms, the lore, the artwork, gameplay is sharp as a needle - it's just superb. One of the best games I've ever played.

Uno de juegos que mas me ha enganchado de switch.
Un metroidvania con una ambientacion fantastica, una buena historia y un mundo subterraneo extenso que no te cansaras de explorar.

    Un must play.

But this doesn't justify pulling it below a very solid 10, since it started as a 15 in my opinion. Plus, some really do enjoy the process of looking, looting and unlocking, even if it takes longer.

Combat is fast-paced and satisfying, with each boss fight feeling different but still great. The world was expertly crafted in a sense where no matter what I was doing, or where I was going, I always found something interesting. Whether it was an exciting boss fight, more health, or a bit of lore, there always something to see. The only thing that I think was a problem is how some bosses are located far away from benches (save spots) so every time you die you have to take a long trek back. This is especially bad if the route to the boss is populated with enemies. However, the few instances of that were not enough to sour this game for me and was small enough that the game is still a 10/10. Expand

Hollow Knight is an incredible achievement that combines smart game design, a rich world, and sharp combat, with an enthralling insectoid world and a story just begging for you to find it. Team Cherry’s title is a high watermark for Metroidvanias, as the satisfying abilities and countless collectibles add variety and meaning to exploration, rewarding every discovery. Yet, while the challenge is a rewarding part of the process, I do wish that the title made some concessions and shone a bit of light in the darkness for those first fledgling steps.
