As a long time fan of Harvest Moon games before and after the split, I have to say this surpassed my expectations after Light of Hope. However, it leaves a lot to be desired.

    The Good:
New mechanics and exploring a different direction. You can move your farm! That's pretty cool and convenient to some extent. It certainly helped in getting the story done. Crop Hybrids. Still haven't figured out entirely how this works but essentially it seems to encourage risking growing a crop out of season or in a different field type for a hybrid. Can be annoying in some regards but I'll detail that in The Bad.

Quality of life improvements! Previous games often had you opening the inventory, finding the tool you wanted, equipping it, then using it. Or a sort scrolling quick menu. This has watered it down to basically pressing a single button to use the tool. It might be too simple for some but I frankly like it.

Better menu. Allows you to clearly see goals and requests. See the map easier. Can tell the friendship and likes/dislikes of people you meet. Calendar displays weather for up to 7 days in the area. Can warp to places as you unlock them.

    The Bad
Boring world: The walls of the game are literally just raised ground with assets in accessible areas but inaccessible. For something that seems like it's meant to feel more open, it also makes it feel empty.

Bland NPCs: So the bachelors and bachelorettes seem actually fantastic as far as design and personality. However, their dialog feels lacking along with the rest of the NPCs. Other NPCs that have actual names don't stand out at all, they have almost no personality, and just as lacking in dialog. To go another step further at how bland the NPCs are, most have names such as "Quiet Woman" or "Awkward Man." You definitely don't get any charm from them. To top it off, NPCs don't walk anywhere. They simply appear and disappear in certain areas when it's their time to show up/leave.

Useless feature among the new mechanic: You get seeds by finding Harvest Sprites. The menu allows you to search for seeds via Harvest Wisp so long as you've found it before. Initially this sounds useful. However, Wisps also only appear under certain conditions and times. The search feature does not list this. So even if you found the Wisp, you have to essentially be near it at the right time to actually see it. You can see the icon of the crop appear on the world map, but it doesn't indicate exactly where it is.

No indication of what field type it is: While some are quite obvious, I've run into some that the characters call "Mountain" but it looks about the same as the grasslands or I'm not entirely sure if it's different but there's a field near the beach area but it's also grass. I wasn't sure if because it's in the same unlocked area as the beach if it counted as beach but unless the crops growing mutations or dying is rng based and I've been incredibly lucky, it seems like it must also be grassland. I suppose the beach one is very limited then as I've only found one area for it.

Stuttering and Game closing: Stuttering didn't make it unplayable but the game closed due to an error and that's pretty concerning.

Stamina: Seems to go away from walking. Not too much an issue but certainly annoying especially with something as indirect as hearts gauge. Would much rather a bar or something more quantifiable. Makes playing in the desert and mountains rather annoying.

All in all I think Natsume took quite a few strides in the right direction as far as gameplay. However, they severely lacked as far as putting any depth into the game that gives it the charm that Story of Season or Stardew Vally or Rune Factory manages. I don't know that I could honestly recommend this game to anyone, but if they keep in this direction or make changes it might be worth it.

Better than I thought it would be. Let’s be honest, the bar was pretty low with Natsume’s recent handling of the Harvest Moon name. The negative reviews I have read so far seem to have a bias about Natsume and their treatment towards the series and previous teams reflecting on this game. Rather than an actual review of the game itself. What they did with the original bokuno games was awful but this game does show that they are trying to get back towards their roots. The harvest sprite seed foraging system is fun and unique. The expando farm is also a fun idea which helps with stamina depletion. The major npcs and their families could be fleshed out more. But maybe we will get some patches? Overall: approach this game with an open mind. It’s one of the best farming games released during the pandemic. Expand

    (3) Walking reduces stamina, which is just insane given the size of the maps and the idea of an expanded "world".
    (4) Navigating the menus is trash.
    (5) The entire way you farm has completely changed. No longer are you buying seeds and creating a massive garden/business. Instead, seeds are nearly cost prohibitive and you randomly find seeds on the map from sprites. It's dumb and makes less sense given that you drain stamina while walking.

    (7) Not a fan of the farm migration and seed collection mechanics, which are untraditional and don't offer much engagement.

It is interesting, sprites are cool, doc's daughter is in this from light of new hope, animals as always are cute, it's easy to garden, etc. The reasons I gave it an 8 is I don't like how it freezes, have to use d pad to save, stamina could definitely improve. THE BAD:

Terrible flat textures. I could genuinely produce better in an afternoon. that goes for at least 20 of the textures I've seen and thats being generous. The tiling is also just atrocious. Im not sure if its a low budget thing or a low effort thing but I would really hope that some more effort goes into the textures and environment for the next game.

Character models are about the same, flat, boring. a few of them are interesting.

The farm plots are not NEARLY as customizable as they should be in this day and age. I got used to it but really disappointing.

NPCs and Villages do not FEEL like people or characters like they did in the older ones. marriage candidates are bland.

    THE GOOD:

Tame wild animals and keep them in the barn. (this was probably the best part for me haha I got a bobcat) The animal models are very cute. not story of seasons cute, but I cant have a bobcat and clouded leopard in story of seasons lol.

Huge world, I REALLY love exploring and moving the farm around to change it up!

A LOT of different crops and findable items, as well as a pretty big cooking log and some crafting.

You DO get to upgrade your barn and home, contrary to what I've seen said online.

The game avatars aren’t bad, sort of similar to Pokemon shield, but the map is basically a sandbox filled with nothing. The towns don’t even have roads. No NPCs other than the romances have names and they all teleport in and out of existence depending on the time of day.
There’s absolutely zero effort put into the missions on this game. I finally started to get requests in the mail from Gabrielle and Doc & the very next day after completing them, I received the exact same requests again. And the requests don’t even pay you money but everything in the game that can help you is over 1,000.

The horses (THAT ARE ABSOLUTELY NEEDED) cost over 20,000$ and if you can’t afford that, guess what you’re walking.

Which wouldn’t be a problem, if everything wasn’t so spaced out and filled with absolutely nothing in between and if walking didn’t push your character to the point of passing out every-time.

I barely make it home without passing out after walking to the beach town.

I really wanted to like this, I really did. I’ve put in hours in an attempt to. But the loading times, the lack of...well ANY THING worth doing and the very clear lack of effort put into just about every bit of this game by the producer makes me want to delete this off my switch.

Save your money. It’s not worth it.

I should have known not to touch this game the moment I found out it was different developers let alone season passes and DLC that make you wish you never bought them but that didn't deter me from my love for Harvest Moon, so I rushed the season pass which left me feeling ripped off after finding out animals that you pay real money for and then a lot of time spent trying to get them to join you or spent hard earned coins on die after 1 to 3 years and then met with a person smiling happily at you telling you your pet is dead. Frustration straight away besides the point, this game has no nostalgia you're put in a world where they don't know how to farm and vegetables, fruits and vegetation for the most part seems to have gone extinct which makes you wonder how they survived so long on just potatoes, yes potatoes, that for some reason never went extinct and they were surviving off randomly finding them. You start off in a mostly single pathed island that has no charm that takes a lot of your time to walk, the tutorial goes on for an extremely extended amount of time and everything just feels slow, animations that you can't skip are slow such as collecting seeds. There's NPC's with no proper names that you can barely interact with that seem to have no purpose at all, the game is linear where thing's like bridges you built in prior games just get built after quests.

There is barely any bag space at the start which is a hindrance straight away, it upgrades throughout story quests which also attributes to a linear feeling, you don't just get to dig out and put plots anywhere like you used to be able to, the watering can is only good for watering 10 plants at the start and for some reason you have a completely portable house and barn, the barn you never got to build yourself. You have to find seeds from fae or spend an exorbitant amount on seeds and other items. Overall this game is very disappointing, unbalanced, different and I regret ever purchasing it.

Love the nostalgic graphics, hate the story. It seems like this game has no set story and it's just you running around doing quests. This game was definitely not worth the money. I expected a experience somewhat like New Beginnings but no, this game was just not fun. All you do is farm basically. There's not enough events to make it fun with only one event per month. Only get this game if you think you can find fun where others can't. Expand

I made an account just for this game. I loved Harvest Moon as a kid on SNES and loved the one on the Game Cube. Switch had a sale for this game and unfortunately I let nostalgia get the best of me and I bought it without looking up reviews.

At first I was liking it, the doc was quirky and the idea that all they ate was potatoes was humorous. But that's about all the positives I can give.

At first I was liking it, the doc was quirky and the idea that all they ate was potatoes was humorous. But that's about all the positives I can give. The camera is lacking, the dialogue is poor, and the moment I found out I'd be moving my farm from place to place I got a pit in my stomach. Harvest Moon is so much more than a farming simulator. It's a relationship sim where you meet new people, learn about their lives and how to become best of friends. It's a game where you get to experience a quaint small town that you can't help but fall in love with.

One World focuses on all of the wrong things. I don't play Harvest Moon because I enjoy planting veggies and raising cattle, I play it because I love the community and the stories of its residents. One world doesn't give you those opportunities, it feels hollow and if I had bought this on a platform that gives refunds I would be refunding this game.

One World stays faithful to the series: once again you’ll need to slowly build up your farm and improve relationships with the neighbors. “Slowly” is the keyword here: the process is so monotonous, it takes a particular kind of gamer to enjoy Harvest Moon. [Issue#253, p.64]

While there is an attempt to bring some much-needed innovation to the series, One World feels too bland, too uninteresting, and it can't capture our attention for long enough. With its vague and drab world, plain characters, and simplistic, repetitive mechanics, One World fails to bring the Harvest Moon series up to contemporary standards.

Harvest Moon: One World is quite fun when played for the first 20+ hours. However, the lack of relatable characters definitely stands out here. The game also stumbles after completing the story to pull me back into the game for a long play session.
